Anika and Liz are joined by guest Jonathan to discuss a movie Jonathan calls "the greatest Star Trek movie ever made": Star Trek: Generations. Our feels run the spectrum: Jonathan loves it, Liz loves everything except the plot and script, and Anika is … not a fan.  Everything that happens on the Enterprise B is the fault of Starfleet PR This is a movie that mistrusts nostalgia, but also believes really strongly in heterosexual domesticity, which makes for an interesting internal conflict Generations gives us the very first glimpse of the fourth estate in the world of Star Trek Anika argues that Picard's arc in this film is necessary for season 3 of Star Trek: Picard to work Liz and Anika have a LOT of feelings about Rene Picard Jonathan suggests that modern nostalgia-driven franchise media is the Nexus. "The '90s are something that everybody wants to go back to, and I promise you, you do not want to go back." It's funny how Kirk's fantasy life is basically cosplaying as Chris Pike (SNW edition) Is the Nexus the real villain of this movie?

Send us a Text Message. On this episode of Fabulous Film and Friends we are looking back at two middling, lackluster sci-fi adventures from 1994 that have mysteriously stood the test of time: Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell, James Spader, John Diehl, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors, Erick Avari, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, Leon Rippey, French Stewart, and Djimon Hounsou, which was released in October of ‘94 then Star Trek: Generations which was released a month later, was directed by David Carson and starred Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFaddon, Malcolm McDowell, Walter Koenig, James Doohan and William Shatner.  I'm Gino Caputi your host, and back for more, especially if Star Trek is to be discussed I have series regular and IT tech Burton Brown, and representing the fresh eyes of the younger, non-cynical generation, author hypnotherapist Joe Field.  The synopses: In Stargate, a crack squad of US Special Forces led by Colonel Jack O'Neill with an assist from archeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson travel through a mysterious circular dimensional portal that was discovered in Giza Egypt in 1928 and kept a secret by the military until the mysteries of the portal could be unlocked. Once on the other side, Jackson and O'Neil discover they are on the planet Abydos with a culture very similar to ancient Egypt. There they befriend the locals and do battle with the god Ra, revealed to be an alien who has enslaved humans on this planet and is intent on destroying the human race on Earth through the Stargate.  In Star Trek Generations a single-minded, pleasure-seeking and murderous Dr. Tholian Soran attempts to destroy an entire solar system in order to get back into a heaven-like, temporal portal in the universe called The Nexus. It is up to the crew of the Starship Enterprise D, led by Captain Jean Luc Picard to stop Soran. Unfortunately, Picard proves to be too weak for the task and finds his ship and crew destroyed, the mission failed and he himself is trapped in the Nexus. Except…Captain James T. Kirk is also in the Nexus having landed in it 78 years earlier the Enterprise B encountered The Nexus on a rescue mission. Picard and Kirk join forces, leave the Nexus and stop Soran through the power of team work.  San Francisco Chronicle Film Critic Mick LaSalle, when summarizing the 1994 Year in Film wrote, “In 20 years will anyone still be watching Stargate? Or Star Trek Generations?”  I agreed with him wholeheartedly that these films were nothing but forgettable, but here we 30 years later and are still watching these works. Add to that, Stargate has had five spinoff  TV series on the subject and they're still planning cinematic reboots. Star Trek Generations was listed implausibly as a one of the great epics in the 2004 book Epic movies and will forever be remembered as the film that killed off Captain Kirk.  So, the burning question is WHY have these films endured?  Find out! Pitching a New Trek Series: Enterprise-CThere are "gaps" in Trek history, mostly between the launch of the Enterprise-B and the start of the continuing voyages of the Enterprise-D on "The Next Generation." The trio dives into creating a new series based during the earlier part of the 24th Century with the crew of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-C. Just like Captain Christopher Pike, fans already know the tragic ending for Captain Rachel Garrett, Lieutenant Richard Castillo, and the Ambassador-class ship (and alternate universe Tasha Yar!). But even though the episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" tells us the end of the story, what were the missions and untold stories of this crew?In this proposed new series, Captain Garret leads a senior crew of commanders from various alien worlds, along with some familiar faces along the way. A young, wild, and close-to-losing-his-job junior diplomat Curzon Dax helps the Enterprise-C in its mission of patroling Klingon and Romulan space, with a new class of starship that seems more equipped for combat than diplomacy. Will the ship's communications officer be the last one in Starfleet? What lower deck shenanigans are occuring? And why does the Ambassador-class ships become less common in the later part of the 24th Century? All these questions and more are explored in the pitching of a Enterprise-C TV series!

The "Gaps" in Star TrekThe Trek franchise continues to expand, and with more and more series and movies, fans learn more about this fantastic universe. But even after all this time, there are still stories that feel like they are "missing." The real-world reasons are obvious: Writers don't want to get into how Spock spent his time from post-Star Trek VI to the events of "Unification" (TNG) because they don't want to disrupt any future stories. Or else they just never got to telling the events of the Romulan War because "Enterprise" got cancelled. The trio takes this opportunity to explore the "untold" stories of the Trek franchise that deserve further investigation. From the voyages of the Enterprise-B to the Enterprise-E's missions during the Dominion War, from the history of the many lives of the Dax symbiont to the origin of the Borg, join us as we ask, "hey ... what happened?"

STTNGeez! Not Another Star Trek Podcast!

Generations opens with the launching of the brand new Enterprise B, signaling the retirement of Captain Kirk and crew. Kirk, Chekov, and Scotty are on board to see the new bird off when they receive a distress call from ships caught in something called “The Ribbon.” The rescue goes awry, and Kirk seems to sacrifice his life to save the Enterprise.            78 years later, the Enterprise D receives a distress call from a space station in the Amargosa system. There they rescue Dr. Tolian Soran who is secretly working with Klingon sisters Lursa and B’Etor. Soran is developing a weapon that destroys whole solar systems in an effort to change the course of the Ribbon which ends up being a gateway to an extra-dimensional world called “The Nexus” where all of your dreams come true. If Soran can alter the Ribbon’s course, he can re-enter the Nexus and be reunited with his dead family.             Picard and Data suss out Soran’s plan, and Picard trades himself for kidnapped Lt. Geordi LaForge in an effort to reach Soran and stop him from destroying another solar system. While Picard deals with Soran on the planet Veridian III, Riker and the crew have to battle Lursa and B’Etor resulting in the destruction of the sisters and their ship and the crippling of the Enterprise D. The flagship of the Federation ends up crashing into Veridian III in a spectacular manner.            Meanwhile, Picard fails to stop Soran and is drawn into the Nexus where he recruits James T. Kirk to return to Veridian III in an effort to try again. Will the two captains be enough to stop Soran, or are we doomed to watch Deep Space Nine movies for years to come? Let’s find out . . . together!

As you might imagine, Paintbox Catering and Bistro in Toronto’s Regent Park has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Without gatherings, there have been no big corporate events to cater, to generate revenue for their social enterprise, which intentionally hires people from the local community who face barriers to employment.  But Allison Gibson, Director of Impact & Operations, has ensured that they’ve made use of their space and model of doing good while making a profit.  Alongside running the catering and bistro, Paintbox has been incubating local business start-ups, and Allison shares how, in light of the changing COVID-19 world, they have pivoted (or perhaps completely changed), to support one of their incubation businesses, taking on the operations of Nibbly, an online grocery service offering same day delivery.  They’ve incorporated their B Corp ethos, and are hiring from the community.  They offer special pop-up sales to the local Regent Park community at a discount and are providing places for neighbours to leave what they can and take what they need.  Clients with compromised health have benefitted from the same day deliveries since the early days of COVID when traditional grocery stores’ delivery schedules were booked a month out.      You’ll hear how purpose and contagious passion have driven Allison to take on this challenge, dedicating long days to learn a new industry and figure it all out, to help people in Regent Park gain food security in a difficult time.  Thank you, Allison!  Resources  Paintbox Catering and Bistro: http://paintboxbistro.ca   Nibbly: https://nibbly.ca   Allison Gibson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alliegib   B Corp Canada: https://bcorporation.net/about-b-lab/country-partner/canada   Additional B Corp Impact Conversations Podcasts:  https://socialimpactadvisors.ca/podcast-kasha-huk/   https://socialimpactadvisors.ca/building-better-communities-the-b-corp-model-with-craig-ryan-bdc/   . James Kirk is dead. Once, on the Enterprise-B, sacrificing himself to save a ship of strangers. Twice, on Veridian III, giving his life to save a planet of unknown aliens. And now? Well ... there are always possibilities, especially when the actor playing you is both wildly infamously egotistical and knows how to write books. Thus, The Return, William Shatner's second foray into writing the further adventures of James T Kirk. Because why would Kirk ever let a little thing like dying twice stop him? Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

First Time Generations. After seven years on television, Star Trek: The Next Generation launched a second Trek movie franchise with the inaugural TNG movie, Star Trek: Generations. Star Trek fans, both Original Series and Next Gen-ers, have long discussed their feelings about the eagerly-awaited meeting between Captains Kirk and Picard, Data's emotions, the destruction of the NCC-1701-D, and the death of Kirk. However, one Trek fan just watched the movie last week - Andi VanderKolk, better known as FirstTimeTrekker. Andi joins the Earl Grey crew and shares her thoughts about Captain Alan Ruck...er, John Harriman of the Enterprise-B, how Dr. Tolian Soran was able to speak great lines while sporting a great coat, and how the star of the entire movie is Spot the Cat. The crew talks the expectations of the first TNG movie, the role of Captain James T. Kirk, and how the story could have been improved. The Chase Rewrite. Fans do not generally regard the sixth season episode "The Chase" as a classic TNG story. However, it offered Captain Jean-Luc Picard a chance to embrace his archaeological passions and embark on an "Indiana Jones"-like adventure including many Alpha Quadrant aliens. "Earl Grey" decides to re-write this episode with the additional challenge of making a new "Yesterday's Enterprise" -- but, this time, with the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-B. In this telling of "The Chase," Darren, Daniel, and Phillip keep much of the beginning of the episode, but instead create a new planet, familiar aliens on this adventure, and a voice from the history books. Look for Picard, Data, and La Forge, along with some strange bedfellows, to meet a storied captain ... and she may make the ultimate sacrifice. Join "Earl Grey" as they re-write "The Chase" to include the Excelsior-class Enterprise-B.   Hosts Daniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren Moser Editor / Producer Darren Moser Executive Producers Norman C. Mere Anarchy: Its Hour Come Round. The film Star Trek: Generations saw the loss of a legend: Captain James T. Kirk, presumed dead during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B. The loss is a devastating one, especially for his former crew and the lives he has touched over the many years of his Starfleet career, including the people of the ravaged planet Mestiko. As the people of that world debate joining the Federation, the former crew of the Enterprise come together one last time to usher in a new era for the Payav. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Dan Gunther talk about the last book in the Mere Anarchy series It’s Hour Come Round. We discuss another end, the loss of Kirk, Bones, family, parallels, adversity bringing people together, an ambiguous ending and our ratings. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

David R. George III: One Constant Star. Many fans know Demora Sulu merely as the daughter of Hikaru and helmsman of the Enterprise-B. We only catch a glimpse of her in Generations, but as the literary universe has evolved we've come to know her through novels like The Captain's Daughter and Serpents Among the Ruins. For David R. George III, Demora has been an important character and the relationship between her and Captain John Harriman has been central to his view of the Lost Era—the time period between 2293 and 2369. Returning to the Lost Era for the first time in nine years, David's new novel brings us back to Demora, who is now captain of the Enterprise-B. In this episode of Literary Treks, Dan Gunther of TrekLit Reviews sits in for Matthew as we're joined by David to discuss the genesis of the novel, his goals in exploring the relationship between Demora, Hikaru, and Harriman, what it was like returning to the Lost Era after writing so much 24th-century political fatigue, the sense of isolation that pervades Demora's life, and the sense of responsibility that friends and colleagues have for one another. In our news segment we look Cross Cult's covers for a new German edition of Greg Cox's Eugenics Wars duology.

The Captain's Daughter. Star Trek Generations brought us a number of shocking moments—the death of Captain Kirk, the destruction of the Enterprise-D—but one with less severe consequences was the revelation that Hikaru Sulu had a daughter. It was just a nod to the passage of time and a nice tidbit for fans that created a connection between the Enterprise-A and Enterprise-B. But did it really make sense? Kirk certainly seemed surprised by it. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones discuss Peter David's solution to the Demora Conundrum, which came in the form of the 1995 novel The Captain's Daughter. We discuss each of the story's five main points—Death, First Date, Memorial, Parenthood, and Life After Death—and whether or not the solution adequately and believably fills in the backstory of that moment in Generations. In our news segment we take a first look at the upcoming Ships of the Line art book, an attempt to reach younger fans with pop-ups, IDW's plans to bring Q to the Abramsverse, and the Starfleet Medical Officers special comics collaboration between IDW and the Tricorder X-Prize called Flesh and Stone.
