It all starts in the nose. Today's guest, allergist Dr. Shuba Iyengar, explains that by the time we exhibit common allergy symptoms such as headache, itchy eyes and post-nasal drip, we've already been silently suffering. On today's episode of The Code, Dr. Iyengar will explain the myriad reasons why over-the-counter allergy medications fail to work, and how her company Allermi, which concocts bespoke nasal sprays for allergy sufferers, is working to address the root causes of this increasingly common issue. As in fitness, getting to the root cause is key. Join today's discussion to hear Dr. Iyengar explain who is most likely to suffer from allergies, where they're likely to live and what we can do about it. Quotes • “To get that whole constellation of stuff better, you have to get that cute little nose better and you have to get that inflammation to go down. So, most treatments that are really effective will work on the nose.” (5:29 | Dr. Shuba Iyengar) • “With climate change, we're having warmer years. We have pollen seasons that have increased over the past—every year, the pollen season gets longer and longer and longer—so you have a longer season of pollination. And then on top of that, the pollen counts are wacky: they go up really high and then all of a sudden it comes down really low. You were just talking about the weather in Denver being 65 and then all of a sudden it's snowing two days later. That wacky temperature is not something that nature likes.”(10:41 | Dr. Shuba Iyengar) • “Because accumulation of all our inflammation is just higher, once that happens, once inflammation is at this baseline—you probably see this all the time—it's not much to make it worse. It doesn't take much to make inflammation worse. It takes a lot to create it, but once you get to that point where it's already inflamed it doesn't take much more to make it worse.” (12:12 | Dr. Shuba Iyengar) Links Connect with Dr. Shuba Iyengar: Website: www.allermi.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/getallermi/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shuba-iyengar-79a8694/ SideKick Tool: https://bit.ly/4a6CqJS Movemate: Award-Winning Active Standing Board https://shorturl.at/egkA1 Promo Code: DRA15 15% off Flux Footwear Coupon Code: drandrewfix 10% off https://flux.rfrl.co/dyq8r LMNT: drinklmnt.com/physioroom RAD Roller: http://radroller.refr.cc/drandrewfix Revogreen https://revogreen.co/drandrewfix HYDRAGUN https://bit.ly/43rAtnX Athletic Brewing: 20% off: https://athleticbrewing.rfrl.co/vrmx8 20% off: ANDREWF20 Connect with Physio Room: Website | https://physioroomco.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/drandrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Stacy: For about 3 months now my throat feels like someone's foot is on my neck, every time I eat or drink anything even drinking water cause this sensation. It started first with feeling nasal congestion when I ate laying down. But for over 1 month I was congested and I took many over the counter drugs and nothing helped. I went to an ENT and now symptoms are much better. However, my throat and head flared up and sometimes my ears feel congestion . I have some regurgitation but very little to no mucus. I don't think it's what I'm eating since I have been on an anti-inflammatory diet since Sept 1. The sensation starts when I feel hungry or after I eat or drink. I've tried protonix, omeprazole and H2 blockers was on it for about 6 weeks and felt even more pressure in my head. Marcia: Hi Dr Cabral, Could you please talk about what material of clothing is non-toxic and safest to wear? And would it be possible to list the worst offenders, that way I'll know which materials to absolutely avoid? Also, do you have any favorite non-toxic clothing brands? Thank you so much! Big fan of your content. Your book "The Rain Barrel Effect" should be required reading for everyone. It was such an eye opener for me. Katie: Hi Dr Cabral, I recently have come off the anti anxiety pill effexor .35mg (been off it for about 3 months now) and I am finding I cannot wake up in the morning for the life of me. I set 12 alarms and still cannot get up, and it's really messing with my life. I also never feel refreshed when I finally do end up waking up. I didn't have this issue while being on that pill and am really struggling. Thanks for your help ! Erin: DNS question: i use this every morning as my breakfast. I have struggled over the years (and specifically more in the fall and i know it's the environmental allergies in my area this time year)….struggle with high heart rate at night, extremely bloated stomach/gassy, and overall just feeling awful in the middle of the night. I ran out of my protein powder for over a week and this went away. As soon as i started it again, back these symptoms came. I have tested this multiple times now to comfirm. Is this the b vitamins? What is happening here…it is driving me crazy and i am desperate to figure out what is happening Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2906 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Environmental allergies are curable? (Sublingual immunotherapy), published by Chipmonk on December 27, 2023 on LessWrong. I used to have severe environmental allergies to cats, dogs, and the outdoors. As I kid, I woke up crying most mornings because of my allergies, and I would occasionally wake up with croup and difficulty breathing. I even had to be taken the hospital once. Anyways, I cried enough that my mother found and enrolled me in a study for an experimental treatment called sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). For the next two years I took under-the-tongue drops, and I presume the drops were formulated with small amounts of the allergens I was reactive to. My allergies have been nearly non-existent since then. I'm sharing this post because I keep telling people about sublingual immunotherapy and they're very surprised. No one seems to know about this treatment! I'm mad about this. Maybe my improvement was unusual? I don't know. A few random studies. Please share additional information in the comments. To be clear, I still have a few mild symptoms: If I pet a dog and then rub my eyes, my eyes get slightly itchy. If a dog licks me, I get mild hives in that area. But that's all! (And I haven't observed any side effects, either.) FWIW, I might also go back on sublingual immunotherapy at some point so I can pet dogs without worry. (Because maybe my treatment was stopped too soon?) Other details: My mother says the particular drops I took costed $25 a week. They weren't FDA approved, but they were still available for purchase. From a quick brief search, I found a few that sell sublingual immunotherapy in the US: Wyndly, Curex, and Quello. I looked a few months ago and I couldn't find any significant reason to prefer one brand over the others. Please comment you have a recommendation. Note: SLIT has been available for longer in Europe than in the US, so the European brands might be better if you have access to them. Thanks for listening. This week, I will be covering the fall flare-up.Horses tend to face their most significant health struggles in spring and fall. It happens in spring because the grass sugars increase as the grasses transition from hay, heightening the risk of flare-ups for horses with metabolic conditions like laminitis. Yet, fall could trigger even more issues- especially in horses with pre-existing imbalances or health problems.Fall Hormonal Shifts and Their Impact on Metabolic ConditionsAs we transition into the fall, I have noticed a surge in health issues, particularly in horses diagnosed with PPID or Cushing's disease. The fall season brings about a natural rise in ACTH levels, exacerbating those conditions in horses already grappling with hormonal imbalances. That surge in ACTH also leads to elevated cortisol levels, which, if prolonged, can pose various health risks, from muscle wasting to laminitis. That highlights the need for proactive management strategies, and makes it essential for anyone owning horses predisposed to metabolic conditions to understand those hormonal shifts.Laminitis Challenges in the FallPreventive measures are essential for mitigating the risk of laminitic flare-ups during the seasonal transition. Horses that have enjoyed a seemingly healthy summer outdoors sometimes experience acute episodes of laminitis as the fall sets in. The trim plays a crucial role in preventing that, as an unhealthy trim could compound the impact of hormonal triggers.Dietary Changes in the Transition from Grass to HayFall can bring significant dietary challenges, particularly for horses transitioning from grass to hay. Without proper management, an abrupt shift from grass to hay could impact the digestive system and trigger other health issues. A gradual transition- especially for horses prone to metabolic conditions, will ensure a much smoother adjustment. That is why horse owners who want to prevent laminitic episodes must know about the higher sugar concentrations in the fall grass.Supplementation and Maintaining a Low-sugar DietSupplementing essential fatty acids and maintaining a low-sugar diet will go a long way in contributing to the overall nutritional support of a horse during its dietary transition in the fall.Environmental Allergies and Respiratory ConditionsIn the fall, there is a rise in environmental particulates, like pollen, which may exacerbate equine respiratory conditions, especially in horses with pre-existing issues like COPD. Switching to round bales or using hay nets could also contribute to dust inhalation and further impact any existing respiratory health issues. Strategies like adjusting feeding setups and using netting to minimize dust exposure, are essential for horses susceptible to respiratory allergies.Temperature Fluctuations and Circulatory ImpactDrastic temperature fluctuations are common in the fall and could challenge a horse's ability to regulate its body temperature. Older horses or those with existing metabolic challenges may struggle with those temperature fluctuations, potentially leading to compromised circulation. That, in turn, could contribute to winter laminitis. Proactive measures, including proper hoof care and trimming, help to maintain healthy circulation and prevent temperature-related complications.Strategies for Prevention and Well-beingA holistic approach is essential for navigating the challenges of fall flare-ups. Prioritizing digestive system support through gradual dietary transitions, probiotic supplementation, and essential fatty acids are needed for a horse's overall well-being. Managing their stressors, maintaining the three Fs (forage, freedom, and friendship), and promptly addressing any signs of distress will help to reduce their stress. Taking a...

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Ashley: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have had amenorrhea for quite a long time. It first started when I lost a large amount of weight for a bodybuilding competition. This was 10 years ago. Over the years I was put on birth control to help try and regulate the period and "bring it on" however I didn't like the way that made me feel and I knew that was only putting a bandaid on the problem and not fixing the real issue. I have tried MANY different things to no avail. Fast forward to present day. In the last 2 years my period has started to return! My doctor says this is a great sign. Maybe my body is becoming more balanced? However it still is irregular. I've gotten it about 4-5 times a year the past two years, it lasts just a few days. The very hard part is I will experience pms symptoms for 3-4 weeks! Irritability, extreme bloating, extreme nipple and breast discomfort. Truly severe symptoms. It even affects me mentally as well as physically. I know you often talk about estrogen dominance but in my case, my estrogen, including estradiol and those other female hormones, are extremely low. What do you do in this case? How can I rebalance these hormones and ease these symptoms? There is a lot of information out there and it all can be so overwhelming, like there's so much I need to do. Please help! Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm a daily podcast listener and I want to thank you for all your helpful wisdom you share. I've had medical issues that I was born with that has caused me to have chronic pain and multiple surgeries throughout childhood and all the way to being an adult now. I recognize as an adult that those procedures and how I was treated was at times necessary and that the doctors were only trying to help. However, lately I've taken a look at what happened through a child's perspective and can see how scary, invalidating and traumatic those experiences were. How do I move on from medical trauma? How do I get help with moving through this when the same people I look to for help are the same people that trigger these feelings in the first place? My body feels constantly stuck in SNS dominance despite following all the health protocols, and I know this issue is holding me back from being well. I've tried working with different therapists, hypnotherapist and a life coach. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Erin: Hoping you have some advice... I keep getting sinus infections and constantly have allergy issues and in the winter often get bronchitis. I've done allergy testing and have bad environmental allergies. I've been doing a lot of gut healing over the past few years yet I am still having these issues. Starting to feel defeated...any ideas or advice? If it does help/matter, most family members on my moms side have allergy issues as well. Thanks so much for all you do. Kathy: Dear Doctor Cabral, thank you for helping so many people. You are amazing! My daughter (who is in her 20's) wants to know why something has been happening for the last few years, and I did do a podcast archive search, but nothing came up, so I would love to know if you have seen this before: The first bite of any type of food that she eats after not eating for a couple of hours (especially first thing in the morning) tastes very sour and causes her cheeks to pucker. The food is not necessarily a sour food, so it seems a little unusual. Water is the only thing that will not do this. She's in great shape and takes good care of her health. Thank you so much, I really appreciate you. :) Tina: I have a few brown spots on my face that my dermatologist is calling melasma. Is there a way to get rid of it naturally without using all the bleach and chemical creams he's recommending? He told me melasma comes from the sun and from heat. So now I'm afraid to go for a walk during the day with the sun out and also I have been avoiding the infrared sauna because he said the heat can cause more of it. Are the spots caused by liver toxicity? Hormone in balance? How can I get rid of them? Thank you so much! Lola: Hi! I have learnt so much from the show and it truly is a blessing! I am a 24year old vata-pitta female with kapha vikruti and I have had alopecia since I was 16. I had always had extremely fine and thin hair so getting alopecia really affected my mental health. It started out as small bald patches on the sides on my head and one in the back, but then over the years, I got thinning at the temples, a receding hairline and thinning at the part of my hair and the crown. I have tried everything but haven't really found a solution. I have recently adopted a pitta pacifying diet, but I'm not sure if it's helping. Whenever we choose herbs for health issues, we work to match the qualities of the herbs to the state of the body. These three plants we work with as herbs for seasonal allergies are each drying in nature. So, if you run dry or have dry symptoms, then make sure to pair them with something moistening like marshmallow or violet. But if you’re on the watery side, these will be a great help!Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a superstar plant with a variety of beneficial effects. Not all of them are available in every format – but the good news for allergy sufferers is, any preparation of nettle will do the trick! Tincture, tea, capsules, powders – any way you get nettle into you will reduce histamine expressions and reduce symptom severity.Eyebright (Euphrasia off.) is another powerful “antihistaminic” herb, and is famously helpful when the eyes are red, itchy, and watery. Tincture’s a great way to work with eyebright, and supplements of this herb are also quite good.Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is another of our favorite herbs for seasonal allergies, even though it’s not super common in herbal commerce. Ground ivy is an excellent herb when the ears and sinuses are stuck up with fluids. It thins them, drains them, and by doing so relieves pressure and pain. (Did you hear our episode all about ground ivy, not too long ago? Check it out here: Ground Ivy – Sometimes It’s Hard To Hear.)Mentioned in this episode:Statement from Mountain Rose Herbs on re-evaluating supplier relationshipsNettle extract (Urtica dioica) affects key receptors and enzymes associated with allergic rhinitis, Phytother Res. 2009 Jul;23(7):920-6. doi: 10.1002/ptr.2763 – a nice study on some identified molecule/receptor actions of nettle to reduce allergic symptomsOur course on Seasonal & Environmental Allergies goes into much more detail about these three herbs – and a couple dozen others, too! The course includes over 9 hours of videos, plus downloadable audio files so you can listen on the go if you prefer. Studies have shown allergies can progress from one form to another in what has been dubbed the 'atopic march' something about a quarter of children in the Western world are affected by. Children with a skin allergy or eczema for instance are more likely to go on to have asthma and hay fever. Anecdotally, lots of people are saying this summer has been atrocious for hay fever. However, some people, including doctors disagree. For them every summer is bad. Lynn Freeman speaks to hay fever sufferer Lee McCauley, Professor Graham Le Gros the Director of the Malaghan Institute for Medical Research, CEO of Allergy New Zealand Mark Dixon, and Dr James Chisnall who is a General Practitioner specialising in allergies.
