I read in The Rain Barrel Effect that the solution for contacts contains some heavy metals, is that already the solution they come in? I buy the daily ones because they're the softest & my eyes are already so damaged from them, that I can hardly stand them (so I only wear them on very special occasions, maybe once a month). Could you also explain why that happens? Do you have any brand recommendations for daily contacts? What about eye sight surgery? Is that something you would recommend? I have been able to control my psoriasis and overall skin problems. I've done a few detox, and the cbo protocol which helped me tremendously but I still see some signs of liver problems. I don't eat meat for the most part, but when I do specially meat from another country I notice my one psoriasis skin spot will start to flare and I do feel somewhat my liver swollen. I have been checked out before on sonograms and liver seems to be 'healthy', although I can cut animal protein. I wanted to know what test to perform or how can I fix this once and for all? (Yay to school germs coming home from my kindergartner) during this diagnosis I went to the hospital because not only did I have bad congestion, but my ears were in so much pain I couldn't even try to sleep. They treated me with meds for strep and ibuprofen for ear pain. The ear pain has improved since but 3 months later my ears still hurt on a daily basis, not excruciating, but enough to bother me during the day. I went to a ENT and he said it's my TMJ. I've had TMJ and never had ear pain from it, it's interesting that my ear pain only started when I had bad congestion from strep and the virus. My hearing test came back fine. In this episode, I want to help you be prepared to fend off viruses so you can get back to doing what you love faster. This includes cold viruses, flu viruses, COVID, and other viruses causing issues like sinusitis, laryngitis, bronchitis—any inflammatory issue in the upper respiratory tract or lungs. Especially now, during cold and flu season, these are the things I make sure I have on hand when traveling or at home. I want to prevent catching a virus, but also help my body fight it off quickly if I do get sick. Here are several reasons why: First, I want to recover faster to resume my usual daily activities. When you feel congested, have a headache, sore throat and are tired, it's hard to do your normal routine even from home. I want to recover faster to spend time with loved ones. When sick, I can't be around my granddaughter or go to dance class. I want to get better to do what I love. Also, I want to try to prevent needing antibiotics or steroids if possible. Antibiotics disrupt gut bacteria, causing leaky gut and susceptibility to other health issues. It's better to avoid them unless the infection is bacterial. Steroids like prednisone disrupt blood sugar, metabolism, immunity and adrenal function. If necessary, we need them, but better to avoid side effects using natural anti-inflammatories to heal faster. My third goal is to prevent the next infection. Catching one virus makes you prone to more. Patients tell me they get infection after infection spending winter sick. I want you to recover fully the first time to avoid getting sick again. This includes what to do after to prevent the next infection. So, our main goals are: · Recover faster to resume daily activities and time with loved ones · Avoid antibiotics and steroids if possible · Prevent the next infection Recognizing the First Signs of Viral Illness It's important to pick up on your own body's typical first symptoms that a viral illness is starting to take hold. Common early symptoms are sore or scratchy throat, sneezing, congestion, feeling feverish, and fatigue. When these symptoms first appear, it's a sign your immune system is ramping up and fighting off an infection. The earlier you take notice and start to support your body, the milder the illness will be. Delaying just a few days allows the virus to proliferate and prolongs recovery time. Some people may not show obvious early symptoms however. If your immune system is sluggish, the virus can multiply for days before you feel sick. In this case you can take immune-enhancing supplements preventively when you know you have had viral exposures. This compensates for a slower immune response. How to Take Action at the First Sign of Illness Pay attention to symptoms—your body's first signals. Think back to when you last got sick—you likely had less sleep, more stress, sugar and alcohol. Immunity decreases, infections increase. We tend to go into denial, wishing we won't get sick despite a sore throat and congestion. It's better if we notice the symptoms quickly so we can act fast. Take action at the first inkling of illness, even if exposed to someone sick. Delaying worsens and lengthens it. When sick, immediately prioritize how to get more rest. At the first sign, cancel plans saying you caught a virus and need to heal. Then care for yourself using these steps to recover faster. Get some sun for vitamin D, even 10 minutes helps. Sauna with red light therapy is great. Light signals aid immunity. Have remedies on hand versus ordering when sick. Start immediately at first signs. Quick action is key to shorten recovery time. Contact my office if you need help with dosing. Choose healthy foods—chicken soup, bone broth, chicken, turkey for protein. Salads, veggies, fruits contain antioxidants and vitamins. Avoid dairy and gluten which are inflammatory. Consider pre-made organic soups if you don't feel well enough to cook. Protein shakes work well—pea or bone broth protein. Eat small meals every 3-4 hours, even if appetite decreases. Stay hydrated. Avoid sugar and alcohol which decrease immunity. Get outside for some sun if possible, Sleep more because your immune system works while you rest. Cancel plans, focus on healing. Then get back to a normal routine faster and avoid spreading your illness. Understanding Viral Symptoms and Fever When your immune system creates congestion, it's in an effort to get rid of the virus. Sneezing and coughing is also to move the fluid and virus out. Sore throat is inflammation, which is your immune system fighting the infection. Fevers help— viruses can't survive high heat. If you feel feverish or have a 99-100 degree fever, that's good. Rest and allow yourself to be hot to help your immune system. Take a hot shower or bath and sleep to heal. Stay hydrated to prevent high fevers. Drink water with sea salt for electrolytes and herbal tea, not caffeine, sugar or alcohol which decrease immunity. With rest and heat, most fevers stay around 100 degrees to kill viruses. If 103-104 degrees or higher, reduce it. Children's temperatures over 102-103 need attention. Hydration helps. A lukewarm washcloth (not ice cold) can lower a high fever. Monitor fever to know if you need medication. Using herbs and nutrients first may prevent the need for medications. If fever disrupts sleep or you have signs of bacterial infection, use fever-reducing medication as needed in addition to natural remedies. Bacterial infections cause higher fevers and yellow/green phlegm. A little green phlegm in the morning is normal from laying down. All day green phlegm or coughing it up indicates bacteria. Then consider antibacterials or antibiotics. Try herbal antivirals first to avoid antibiotics if possible. If improving with natural remedies, keep at it. If not, use antibiotics. Natural approaches can be supportive if antibiotics are needed. The first steps when sick are: · At first signs, cancel plans to rest and heal · Stay hydrated with water, herbal tea (avoid sugar/alcohol) · Take hot baths/showers and nap · Monitor fever under 100 good, if 103-104 reduce gently Choosing the Right Supplements and Dosing Next is choosing the right supplements. Everyone is different, and there are thousands of options. Prioritize the most important. Experiment to see what works for you. Have your favorites on hand. Some love oregano oil, olive leaf is great. Mushrooms like shiitake, maitake, reishi are excellent for immunity. Use in cooking, in tea or capsules. Strategic combinations are best, with the most effective ingredients in one product vs. many bottles. I'm more likely to take 1-2 products consistently than juggle many. Herbs and nutrients metabolize within hours, so frequent dosing matters—morning, midday, evening, bedtime. One dose per day only helps briefly. What to take I always have silver on hand. Silver liquid or nanoparticles of silver in water help against viruses and bacteria. Squirt in mouth/nose, swallow, use topically. I also take Hesperidin. It's a plant-based natural antihistamine. Synthetic antihistamines have more side effects. When sick, the immune response increases histamine—causing runny nose, sneezing, sore throat. Antihistamines reduce this, not inhibiting immunity. They allow better virus/bacteria defense by reducing congestion where bacteria can grow. Plant-based hesperidin requires frequent dosing. Immune Support by Nature Empowered contains vitamin A, C, zinc, astragalus, elderberry—antiviral and immune supportive herbs. Take morning, midday, evening, bedtime. Immune Support Plus contains vitamin D, NAC and quercetin. NAC helps recover faster and thins phlegm. Quercetin is also anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory. If you might get sick, take Immune Plus 1-2 times a day. Increase dosing if ill. Add silver, hesperidin if sick. Consider extra vitamin A for immune boost—up to 50,000 IU twice or four times daily for a week or two. It is directly antiviral for respiratory tract/lungs. Vitamin C – use frequent smaller doses. 500 mg four times daily is better than 2,000mg at once which can cause loose stool. Vitamin D optimize before illness, increase dose when sick. Take bromelain or Sinatrol containing bromelain and berberine if increased coughing, congestion, or ear plugging from inflammation. Bromelain is anti-inflammatory. Berberine fights bacteria. Take 500-1000mg of bromelain 2-3 times daily. If bacterial signs—yellow/green phlegm, high fever— berberine helps avoid antibiotics. Take 500-1000mg twice daily. Keep going with natural remedies, use antibiotics if needed. Natural approaches help antibiotics be more effective. Seeking Medical Care While most viral illnesses can be supported at home, it's important to seek medical care in the following circumstances: · If fever climbs over 102-103°F - use cooling techniques and stay hydrated to keep it in a safe range · If phlegm becomes yellow/green - this can indicate a secondary bacterial infection that may need antibiotics · If chest congestion and breathing difficulties develop - immediate medical care is needed in this case · If illness lasts longer than 10-14 days without improvement - further care may be needed for complete recovery If asthma, pneumonia, or acute breathing distress occurs, or very high fevers develop, it's important to promptly seek medical help. Otherwise, implementing these natural treatments at the very first signs of viral illness often allows fast recovery without needing medications. Individualized Programs for Optimal Results Every person has a unique body makeup and reacts to illnesses and supplements a little differently. Of course, my surgeon was excellent, and he gave me preoperative instructions that were integral to the speed of my recovery.  I began to think about the reasons people heal and why they may not heal from either surgery or an injury.  I started with the instructions given to me by my surgeon, and the reason he gave asked me to prepare my body for healing prior to the surgery.  His instructions included diet, activity, and supplements to my diet.  The first recommendation was to load my diet with protein to provide my body with the necessary building blocks to heal my muscles and connective tissue during the surgery and afterwards.  His instructions told me to eat a diet including meat, milk products with yogurt and cheese, eggs, and protein shakes. The amount of protein a day required was grams of protein equal to my weight in lbs.  For example: I weigh 125 lbs. and therefore I was instructed to eat 125 grams of protein/day.  I ate the foods that he recommended, and I took daily whey protein shakes with 25 grams of protein each, plus 20 grams of collagen (another animal protein) every day in my coffee. That satisfied the need to eat the building blocks of what I would use to heal. The next recommendation was to eat a diet with fresh fruit and vegetables at every meal, avoid sugar, and junk food, and avoid all alcohol and sugared soda and diet drinks.  This part of the instructions provided the enzymes and vitamins necessary for healing, as well as advised me to avoid toxins and junk food which can prevent healing.  Elevated blood sugar that accompanies intake of carbohydrate food and drink, promote insulin resistance and poor healing.  Alcohol is a toxin that blocks the liver from normal activity and blocks processing of nutrients.  It is absolutely contraindicated while you are pre-op and healing. Next, there were supplement recommendations given to me to provide the necessary vitamins and minerals involved in healing, that are difficult to get in a normal diet. These included the Vitamins methyl B12, multi-methyl-B vitamins, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and the minerals Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium and copper. The additional supplements were herbs and other substances that help healing including Quercetin, NAC (or Glutamine), Bromelain and Probiotics.  I was told to start all of these recommendations 6 weeks before surgery, and for 6 weeks after surgery. I believe that following these recommendations is key to a great recovery after surgery or an injury.  The other factors that are key to success after surgery is to have a healthy level of testosterone, and I have taken T for 20 years and I realize that my health has been greatly improved after age 40 because of testosterone replacement.  Testosterone is an anabolic steroid and is necessary for healthy healing. Most men and women have good levels of testosterone until they get older, and ovaries and testes stop producing enough T.  When women become deficient at an average age of 45, and men at 55, our immune system decreases their production of healing white cells, our growth hormone decreases and stem cell activity decreases, all of which are deficient secondary to testosterone deficiency. This makes healing as we get older much more difficult unless we replace the key hormone of T. The success of surgery is dependent on our overall health so we can heal, the skill of our surgeon, our own health status at the time of surgery, our diseases, and our age/testosterone blood levels, our nutrient status and our diet providing the necessary building blocks to heal our tissues.  Surgery is not something you can just show up for, it is something you should plan to prepare yourself for and to follow up with excellent self-care until you are discharged from surgery, or until you are healed. Other issues that can cause a surgery to fail or to be redone: ·      Surgery did not completely fix the problem (lack of surgical skill or complications secondary to your anatomy or physiology). ·      Your medical condition or medications can decrease your ability to heal (steroid treatment or treatment for autoimmune diseases). ·      Diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, cancer or other chronic illnesses ·      Old age, female over 45, male over 55. ·      Testicular or ovarian removal ·      Poor nutrition ·      Lack of exercise ·      Smoking and drinking alcohol ·      Lung disease that decreases your O2 levels ·      Obesity, Body fat % > 20 % in men and > 26% in women, or BMI > 25 ·      Medications that decrease your ability to heal: corticosteroids, cancer meds, autoimmune disease medications ·      Lab results that indicate your poor risk of healing:  High CRP (inflammation), Anemia, Cortisol is high, Free T is low, Estrone is high in men > 30, High CO2 , high HBA1C, High fasting BS and fasting insulin > 10, Elevated liver enzymes, poor kidney functions, low white blood cells, low GH (IGF-1) < 150. Follow the instructions that my surgeon gave me and get your hormones replaced, clean up your diet and lifestyle, and get as healthy as possible before and after your surgery so you will have the shortest recovery and the most successful possible.

Monica Villarica began dancing at the age of 2 under the direction of her grandmother, Fe Sala Villarica. In 2004, she joined her first CCP Summer Dance Workshop in Manila on partial scholarship. Along with intensive training in Classical Ballet, she was also exposed to Modern Dance. Broad Spectrum Digestive Enzymes Children on the autism spectrum have difficulty digesting their food properly. This means they do not absorb the nutrients from the foods they eat. This starves their brain of what it needs to function properly. Broad spectrum enzymes assist in the digestion of many foods including protein, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. Enzymes are naturally produced by the body unless the GI tract is not working properly. If so, digestion and absorption of nutrients and many other factors are effected. Enzymes can be very helpful when taken just before or with meals to help break down food particles, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The enzyme known as DPPIV helps break down the large proteins in wheat known as gluten, and casein in dairy. Enzymes for Therapeutic use When enzymes are taken away from food they can be helpful as little garbage collectors in the sense of cleaning up the toxic debris from various viral and bacterial issues. Benefits Beyond Digestion Enzymes can be extremely helpful with the sensitive digestion needs of those with autism, ADHD, allergies, and more. By improving digestion there can be a reduction in inflammation in the GI tract, therefore, better overall health. Keeping the gut healthy is crucial. The gut has receptors that make neurotransmitters for the brain such as serotonin which effects mood, appetite, and sleep, and GABA which acts to calm nerve function. Enzymes also act as little garbage collectors cleaning up toxic debris .   From using enzymes parents report better concentration, increased language abilities, improved digestion, and behavior.   Help with positive gut bacteria and phenols There are beneficial microorganisms in the gut that are built from fiber foods such as vegetables. If the GI tract is compromised and weak it can have trouble digesting fiber. Additionally, Phenols are a compound found in many healthy foods including vegetables and dark colored fruit. These are healthy foods but our kids may be sensitive to them. One enzyme formula that can be helpful with both fiber digestion and phenols is No-Phenol from Houston-Enzymes. They come in capsules and chewable form.    Some Common Enzymes are: • Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) breaks down casomorphin (from casein) and gluteomorphins (from gluten) • Proteases break down proteins • Lactase breaks down lactose (found in dairy) • Amylase for starch (carbohydrate) digestion • Alpha-galactosidase breaks down beans and other fiber-rich foods • Xylanase helps digest fruits and vegetables (phenolic foods) • Beta-glucanase for fiber-rich vegetables and grains • Lipase breaks down lipids or fats • Bromelain and papain are enzymes derived from pineapple. They break down proteins. Note: Some people exhibit sensitivities to fruit or citrus, so watch for signs of this from your child. Cellulase may interfere with some time-released, cellulose-based medications. Ask your doctor or check your labels for hydroxypropyl cellulose, or hypromellose. Some products come as “cellulose-free”. Quality Products Broad spectrum digestive enzymes are taken just prior to eating a meal for their assistance in digestion. This helps the body absorb nutrients for better health and well being. There are several great products available such as Trienza by Houston-Enzymes.  This formula has the added benefit of DPP-IV, a specific enzyme that breaks down the larger proteins in dairy and wheat products that can injure the gut lining and create toxins in the blood which make their way to the brain. This often triggers an allergic response to these foods. Trienza also comes in a chewable form. The size of the meal often determines the dosage. Start slowly with half the recommended dosage and work your way up to the full amount over a 12-14 day period. What are you doing with all of your tomatoes? A few years ago, I stumbled on Ina Garten's Recipe for Roasted Tomato Soup - it's the best roasted tomato basil soup recipe out there if you ask me! Ina's recipe calls for fresh tomatoes and herbs and she doesn't use cream or milk. Best of all, Ina's soup is rich and full of flavor. Ingredients 3 lbs. ripe plum tomatoes, cut in half lengthwise 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp. olive oil 2 cups chopped yellow onions 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1 (28 oz) can whole plum tomatoes, with juice 4 cups fresh basil leaves, packed 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp. dried) 4 cups chicken stock (homemadeor store bought) Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Gently toss the tomatoes from your garden with 1/4 cup olive oil and layer on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste. Roast for 45 minutes. In a large dutch-oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, and a pinch of salt. Sauté until onions are translucent and start to brown, about 10 minutes. Add the canned tomatoes, basil, thyme, roasted tomatoes, including the juices, and chicken stock. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Bring the soup back to a simmer and cook for 40 minutes, uncovered. Transfer the soup to a blender and puree until smooth. Taste for salt and pepper. Serve with drizzle of cream or dollop of sour cream, fresh parmesan, and side of grilled cheese. So that's what I do with any extra tomatoes this time of year. I'll share the recipe in today's Show Notes.   Brevities #OTD On this day in 1843, the New England Farmer ran an ad about Chrysanthemums for nurseryman Joseph Breck: "The subscribers offer for sale twenty varieties of new Chrysanthemums of the most superb and rare sorts, at 50 cents per pot."     #OTD   Today is the birthday of Joy Morton who was born on this day in 1855. Morton's father was J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Dayand  a former secretary of agriculture under President Cleveland. Not surprisingly, Joy's love of trees was instilled in him at a young age. Raised on a farm in Nebraska, Joy Morton became a powerful businessman in Chicago with his company Morton Salt. In December 1922, Joy established The Morton Arboretum - a tract of land dedicated to ongoing study of trees, shrubs, and grasses. In 1923, Morton donated his family's Ancestral home, Arbor Lodge, to Nebraska and the property became a state park and a memorial to his father. An article from the Chicago Tribune in 1926, offered a glimpse of the passion Morton felt about trees. Speaking at the Arboretum, Morton said, "I want to appeal to the gambling instinct of the American people. I want a man to come in here and say, 'What can I get out of tree planting?' I want to arouse his venturesomeness. A man old enough to think for himself comes in here and sees a group like that [pointing] group of walnuts over there which is doing so well, and then he says to himself, 'Well, how about it? What can I do now on my land that will mean something to my grandchildren thirty years hence? And, then I want him to keep looking at the walnuts, or what he likes best, until he says, I believe I'll go and do likewise.'"   #OTD   Today is the birthday of James Drummond Dole who was born on this day in 1877. Dole had gone to Harvard and then after graduation at the age of 22, he made his way to Hawaii in 1899. After living there two years, he honed in on growing pineapple as a business. The Smooth Cayenne strain of pineapple wasn't native to Hawaii. It was a Florida variety. Dole began growing 200 pineapple plants on 60 acres. The rest is history. Here are a few fun pineapple facts: Pineapples have Bromelain; a chemical that prevents gelatin from setting. But, once pineapple is canned, the Bromelain is destroyed, which is why you can add canned pineapple to jello. Christopher Columbus brought pineapples back to Spain from the Caribbean Island of Guadalupe in 1493.  The Spanish introduced pineapples to Hawaii. Today, thanks to Dole, more than one-third of the world's commercial supply of pineapples comes from Hawaii.     Unearthed Words How beautiful leaves grow old. It came out in 1995 and the subtitle is The Lives and Lore of North American Wildflowers. The hedgemaids referred to in the title is a reference to the common ground ivy, while Fairy Candles are the tall, white rockets of the native black cohosh, Cimicifuga racemosa.  In the book, Author Jack Sanders explores the lives and lore of more than 80 of North America's most popular wildflowers, describing the origins of their names, their places in history and literature, what uses ancient herbalists found for them, what uses they have now, where they grow, how they reproduce, and how to grow or transplant them. Aside from what you liked and what was a bust, try to put together a list of things you'd like to do in your 2020 garden. Then, get your calendar out and sync up your goals with a timeline. If you want a pond installed by your kid's graduation, you need to be making calls now. If you know you need some mulch delivered first thing next Spring, put a reminder on your calendar for the middle of April - better yet, if you know how much you need, make a note of that as well. All the minutia of our gardens that we think is unforgettable is lost to us once our lives get busy and the holidays roll around. So grab a pumpkin spice latte and your favorite notebook, and start journaling for a more strategic start in your garden next year.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart Sunday is the 29th of September - also known as Michaelmas. In the middle ages in England, farmers used Michaelmas as a way to mark the change of seasons; It was time to wrap up the reaping and start getting ready for winter. And, according to folklore, bounty-thorn (the English folk-name for blackberries) need to be picked by Michaelmas because that was the day that Lucifer was expelled from Heaven. Now according to folklore, once he was cast out, Lucifer promptly fell straight into a blackberry bush. A blackberry bush would not make for a soft landing. Lucifer wasn't thrilled with it either. He supposedly cursed the blackberry fruit, making them unfit for consumption. So unless, you want to eat tainted blackberries, get them picked before Sunday. However you choose to move your body -, whether it’s a daily run, yoga, team competition or a Spartan Ultra - once you’re done, it’s time to recover. What does the body need to heal and regenerate? We’ll review some key nutrients and foods that can restore and replenish so you’re ready for whatever comes next. WHAT WE COVER:   Movement or exercise for the body is one of the pillars of long-term health and wellness. But, once you’ve pushed your body hard it’s time to recover. One of the things that happens whether it be aerobic or weight training is that cells in the body consume huge amounts of oxygen. That process, called oxidation, can damage cell membranes and impair their ability to function. Externally, how does this manifest? We’ve all been there…Muscle soreness, inflammation, and fatigue. What we’re going to talk about for the next few minutes is how to correct that and optimize the healing process.    I’m going to list 5 simple steps you can take to jump start the healing and recovery process: I’m a big believer in food as medicine. I love going right to the source and that’s food for nutrients but some of the things I’ll mention do come in supplement (capsule or powder) form but I’m going to mention the food source as well. -First up, Antioxidants – one you can use Quercetin  - found in apples, blueberries, and buckwheat herbal tea -Next, an Anti-inflammatant - Bromelain it’s an enzyme derived from pineapple you can get it either by drinking the juice or eating the fruit. It’s more concentrated at the core of the pineapple. So, if you’re slicing it up to eat….don’t toss the core! - How about Minerals…there’s a mineral that aids muscle recovery and it also calms the brain. It’s  Magnesium - available as a supplement, but naturally found in nuts (especially almonds and brazil nuts), seeds (such as pumpkin or flax), and legumes (those include beans, chickpeas and lentils). - Another important factor for rapid recovery is healthy Blood Glucose Homeostasis or balance there’s a natural spice that can help and it’s is Cinnamon. Based on recent studies it’s thought help with blood sugar control by increasing insulin sensitivity. This can allow the body to better perform tissue repair. Anywhere from about 1-6 grams of cinnamon has been used in clinical studies. How much does that equate to? Well 1 gram of ground cinnamon is about ½ a teaspoon. So, it doesn’t take much to reap the healthy benefits. - Last up, number 5: Rehydrate! – with what else…H2O - your body is roughly 55% water for women and 60% for men and you decrease your water stores through perspiration, cellular activity and metabolism during intense workouts.
