This week we're talking about Fall foods! There's lots to love about Fall foods: lettuces, bitter greens, winter squash, and root vegetables. Fall and winter foods tend to be richer and more slowly cooked, so savor the preparation and the flavor. But there are some pitfalls too. Pumpkin spice latte anyone? We cover these too and give you some tips to remain healthy and strong as the days get shorter.00:01:34 I love fall foods, like bitter greens and winter squash.00:05:46 Hard sell: bitter greens, healthy, vitamin c, antioxidants, try recipes.00:09:49 Comforting foods and spices create grounding practice.00:11:41 Moon cycle affects women; food, meditation, walks help.00:15:13 Complex winter meals; simple summer salads.00:17:50 Be aware of portion sizes during winter.00:22:26 "Eating order affects digestion and glucose levels."00:25:02 Alcohol-free options: Seltzer water, Seedlip elixir.00:29:32 Cook bones with herbs, water, remove fat.00:30:57 Health store sells bones, lengthy but worth it.Amelia's bone brothPlace 2-3 bones (I use beed bones from my daughter's farm) in a crockpot or instant potAdd 6-8 cups waterAdd desired herbs such as rosemary or thyme sprigsAdd 1-2 tsp salt (optional)Cook on low heat for 10 hours.Remove from heat; put in glass jars and strain fat with cheesecloth or using a coffee filter. Praise the gourds, it's pumpkin spice season! We love delicious pumpkin drinks, treats, and seasonal foods, but the calories and sugar can definitely add up and leave us feeling sluggish and off track. In this episode, TMN Coach Hannah Abdulla, RD, joins us to review our favorite Trader Joe's fall items and share how we balance yummy fall items with great nutrition so we can still hit our health goals. Whatever your goal weight is, our 3-month Lifestyle Reset Program can help you build the habits to reach it! Click here to learn more about this 1:1 program with one of our registered dietitians. Our fave Trader Joe's Fall Products: Pumpkin Spice Coffee Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese Autumn Harvest Creamy Pasta Sauce Pumpkin O's Cereal Pumpkin Pancake & Waffle Mix Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookie Mix Some key takeaways from this episode include: Have fun with turning your staple ingredients into fall recipes! Use ground turkey or ground beef in a hearty chili (which is a protein- and veggie-packed dish!), or shape them into burgers for the grill since it's still pretty hot outside! For the more carb-heavy fall items like pumpkin spice cereal, pancakes, or muffins, pair them with a serving of protein and a piece of fruit for a balanced meal that will keep you full while enjoying your favorite treats! You don't need to avoid sweet fall treats altogether. Instead, focus on managing your portions and serving sizes, pairing it with protein or fresh produce, and buying baking mixes instead of ready-made treats so it's harder to eat a lot at once. Hi! It's fall, and that means it's a great time to forage and preserve foods. As trees and plants prepare for winter themselves, there are nuts, berries and roots abound for foraging as long as you do it responsibly. How can we keep our harvest usable for the coming months? We talk with local foragers about what you can find to eat out in the wild, and with some avid canners about how to make your autumn bounty last beyond the season. But first, it's @Us. Fall, or Autumn, is in full swing and just like your wardrobe changes with the changing seasons, so should your diet! Why? Because your bodies also change throughout the seasons, so, eating cold foods or foods that are considered "yin" would be somewhat similar to wearing a bathing suit when the temperature is cold. So what should one be eating at this time of year? As it starts to get colder, you need to nourish and warm the body from the inside, to balance the yin and the yang. If you're eating ‘cold' foods, also known as yin foods, such as fruits, raw vegetables, salads and cold drinks, you're overpowering the yin, leaving yourself feeling cold from the inside out and more prone to getting sick. Therefore, the colder months are all about eating the grounding and nourishing yang foods that are going to balance our hormones, strengthen our immune system, boost our energy and feel well all rounded. Adapting your diet to the seasons is crucial for your health and wellbeing, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This will allow you to feel energized throughout the day and avoid getting sick this winter! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
