Send us a Text Message. On the evening of January 17th, 2020, Veronica Reyes Diaz went out to dinner with friends in Dover, Florida. After putting her kids to bed, she stepped outside, never to be seen again, leaving her keys, wallet, and cash inside of her car parked at her home. At a glance, Veronica's case is a mystery with no leads in sight, but in this week's episode, Angelina and Aurora are joined by her father, Fidencio, who wonders if there are obvious angles the police have overlooked. Naive Melody is a woven paper and ink image in the size of a petate, a woven mat Fidencio Fifield-Perez used to sleep on as a child in Oaxaca, Mexico. The early memory of the mat's imprint on the artist's bare skin fueled a quiet and laborious process some 25 years later. Chasing the unforgettable, Fidencio Fifield-Perez manifests his visions through the obsessive and therapeutic handling of materials in the sacred and safe space of his studio. In the here and now emerges an object that is nuanced and multifaceted, grounded in matter and ambiguity, and signifying beyond the easily digestible. CardioNerds (Amit Goyal and Daniel Ambinder), Dr. Pablo Sanchez (CardioNerds Ambassador, Stanford University Medical Center), Dr. Maria Pabon (CardioNerds Ambassador, Brigham and Women’s Hospital), and Karen Malacon (Student doctor and LMSA co-chair at Stanford University Medical Center) join Dean for Students at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Fidencio Saldana, for an important discussion about Latinx representation in cardiology. We established the multifaceted benefits of diversity in healthcare, including improving access, cultural competency, and quality of care delivered. We also talked about the need to increase the number of underrepresented minority students in medicine in addition to the importance of removing barriers to improve education. By providing appropriate resources as well as early mentorship and exposure to the medical field, we can address the "leaky pipeline," or as Dr. Saldana reframed it, "the clogged pipeline.” Then, we dove into Dr. Saldana’s experiences in medical school, the barriers he overcame, and how his parents’ hard work and generosity motivated him to become the cardiologist he is now. This event hosted the ACC Massachusetts Chapter. Stay tuned for a message by chapter Governor Dr. Malissa Wood. The PA-ACC & CardioNerds Narratives in Cardiology is a multimedia educational series jointly developed by the Pennsylvania Chapter ACC, the ACC Fellows in Training Section, and the CardioNerds Platform with the goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in cardiology. In this series, we host inspiring faculty and fellows from various ACC chapters to discuss their areas of expertise and their individual narratives. Join us for these captivating conversations as we celebrate our differences and share our joy for practicing cardiovascular medicine. Audio editing by CardioNerds Academy Intern, Dr. Gurleen Kaur. Video version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpq2wVgG8mA Quotable We strive to ensure that we have a diverse set of college students and a diverse set of medical students and residents and fellows. But I think it's also just as important to ensure that we have the resources to ensure that those individuals that we've recruited and have done so hard to recruit, continue to succeed. -Dr. Maria Pabon I've realized that you can teach mentoring, you can teach advising. And I think it's important to be able to create that culture and expectation. Some people may be a little bit better at it than others, but I think it's important to place an emphasis on that at each level of training, so that you can train to be a better mentor and a better advisor. -Dr. Maria Pabon Show Notes 1. How is the LatinX representation in medicine compared to in the general population? Based on the most recent data from the US census Bureau, as of 2019, the Hispanic proportion of the US population is about 18.5%.A recent report by the AAMC showed that for the academic year 2020-21, of around 22,000 medical school matriculants, only 11% were from LatinX background, although this number was higher compared to 2017 where only 9.8% of the matriculants were of LatinX origin. 2. How does increasing workforce diversity improve quality of care? Cultural competency forms an important cornerstone of high-quality and equitable care for a diverse population, and it is learned not by lecture but by exposure, experience, and atmosphere.Medicine involves not only knowledge but meaningful connection and having a physician with a common background enhances the patient-doctor interaction by a spectrum of constructive effects.Inasmuch as research questions are guided by int...

What are the eight communities the comprise the Yaqui nation? Why does a U.S-based energy company want to build a gas pipeline through Yaqui territory in Sonora Mexico? How is the connection to an ancestral land a defining element for many indigenous communities? Why is asking indigenous people to move different from asking non-_indigenous people to move from New York to Los Angeles? Los Angeles is on occupied Togva land? Is it possible to organize against settler-colonial-nation states such as Canada, United States of America, and Mexico? The Yaqui people hold a memory of themselves before Spanish colonization, before the country of Mexico and before USA corporations. What is the responsibility of people inside theUS for the actions of American companies injuring people outside of the Unites States? When we talk about environmental issues, do we forget to include indigenous people? How are environmental issues tied to structural racism? Is the fight against the North Dakota Pipeline similar to the fight against the Sinaloa gas pipeline? Why have Indigenous people been paying the price for other people's comfort. The company IEnova, that is building a gas pipeline through Yaqui territory in Sonora Mexico is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, based in San Diego California. The gas pipeline would pass through Yaqui territory but would not provide gas to the Yaqui community? Did Sempra energy receive consent from all Yaqui communities to build a gas pipeline through Yaqui territory? What are the legal processes for international corporations to build on indigenous land? Loma de Bacum sued the energy company to halt construction of the Guaymas-El Oro gas pipeline through their territory. On August 26, 2016 the court of Sonora ruled that the gas pipeline construction through Yaqui territory had to stop because they company did not have consent. When the gas company ignored the court's order to stop construction, the Yaqui community stopped construction through direct action. What happened during the attack in Loma de Bacum that resulted in the death of one person? Why was Fidencio Aldama taken into custody by the prosecutor of Sorona? What are the contradictions in the evidence used against Fidencio Aldama?

The Security State, Far Right and Media Post-January 6th This week on the show, you'll hear two segments: chat with Spencer Sunshine on the far right and the government's reaction following the riot on January 6th in DC and some perspectives on political content removal and social media from anarchist media platforms ItsGoingDown and crimethInc. Spencer Sunshine Transcription PDF (unimposed) Zine (imposed PDF) First up, anti-fascist researcher Spencer Sunshine talks about the aftermath of the January 6th putsch attempt in DC, mainstream media and Democrat narratives of concerning domestic terrorism, reporting of participation of law enforcement and military in the riot, anti-fascist research, what the stepping down of Trump has meant for his radicalized base and Spencer's thoughts on claims of rehabilitation by former White Nationalists like Matthew Heimbach. There was a good article published by IGD on the state's response to January 6th and what it can mean to anti-repression activists here. Also, a great place to keep up on what's going on in the far right in the so-called US, check out IGD's “This Week In Fascism” column, soon to be a podcast. CrimeThinc. and ItsGoingDown Transcription PDF (unimposed) Zine (imposed PDF) Then, you'll hear the main host from the ItsGoingDown Podcast and a comrade from CrimethInc (both affiliates of the Channel Zero Network) talking about implications for anarchists and antifascists of the silencing of far right platforms and accounts and how similar moves have silenced the anti-authoritarian left. We talk about perspectives the media may have missed around “deplatforming” by tech giants like Patreon, Facebook and Twitter and how easily the normalization of ejecting non-mainstream narratives follows the trail of profit and power, and the importance of building our own platforms and infrastructure. Patreon Updates A little housekeeping note. For those listeners able to support us on Patreon with recurring donations, we are still fundraising to pay comrades to transcribe and format our episodes into zines moving forward. We've started with January 2021, putting out a weekly transcript for translations, search-ability, access to non-aural learners and those with hearing difficulties as well as making it easier send these interviews into prisons where broadcasts and podcasts may not reach. We are still $120 behind our base goal for this. So, if you have some extra dough you can send our way, it'd be much appreciated. We won't paywall our content ever, but for those who donate at our patreon above the $10 level, you'll get a monthly zine in the mail sent to you or a prisoners of your choosing in the US as curated by us, plus some one-time gifts. Other ways to support the project include sending us show ideas, giving us feedback, sharing us with your friends and enemies, or talking your local radio station into playing us on the airwaves! Get in touch with more questions… Announcements Fidencio Aldama From the Fidencio Aldama Support Fund: We're raising funds for Fidencio Aldama, an indigenous Yaqui prisoner framed for murder and locked up in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico, for his participation in a struggle against a gas pipeline. Fidencio has been in prison since October 2016, was railroaded through the courts, and is currently appealing his conviction. Support will be ongoing, but right now we need funds to get a copy of the case file, help pay for communication, and potentially cover some legal fees. You can donate here: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/fidenciolibre, or get in touch at fidenciolibre@protonmail.com A website with more info will be forthcoming, but for now you can read more about Fidencio's case here: https://itsgoingdown.org/free-fidencio-aldama-political-prisoner-yaqui-tribe/ Saludos solidarios, Fidencio Aldama Support Fund Political Prisoner Updates Xinachtli, aka Alvaro Luna Hernandez, is an anarchist communist Chicano political prisoner in so-called Texas. From the Mezcal Collaborative: The explosive demand for mezcal over the past five years has had serious implications in the state of Oaxaca where about 85% of all mezcal in the market is produced. There are eight other states in Mexico that are currently recognized under the Denominacion de Origen, and not only do they have agave ready for production, but also the resources and ability to get mezcal into the marketplace. This is particularly so in the state of Durango. Could this regional diversification offset any negative environmental and social impacts being seen in Oaxaca? And as production ramps up in Durango, can we look to the models from Oaxaca for bits of wisdom or warnings about which paths to take and avoid? We invite your comments and insights! The Mezcal Collaborative intends to host more Spirited Conversations and your feedback can help shape future topics! Gracias y Salucita! Hey Hey! Agave is dedicated to all things agave. Join us for conversations with industry experts, enthusiasts, producers and educators as we discuss the fascinating world of agave spirits. ¡Hey Hey! It may be fair to say that Joshua and Jason know their way around whisky be it Scotch, American, or otherwise. When it comes to mezcal, well, it's no secret that they, like many people, could use a primer, a 101, if you will, in agave spirits. Joshua flew down to Oaxaca to meet with Arik Torren of Fidencio spirits and Enrique Jiménez of Del Amigo distillery to learn from the masters. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- Blue Yeti for making great microphones- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
