This is Pete Worrell from Bigelow, and I'm happy to bring you another episode of the Positive Enterprise Value Podcast. Today my interview guest is Flora Bowley. Flora is a world-known artist, entrepreneur, teacher, retreat center owner, who makes her principal headquarters on the west coast. She's an example of an entrepreneur as a creative, and if you've listened to Positive Enterprise Value or read our blog posts at Bigelow, we believe that entrepreneurs are creatives and Flora's just a great example of that. Today she candidly and generously shares with us the evolution of her professional and personal goals over her lifetime, a little bit about some of the chapters she's been through, the overarching journey, what was in her head growing up, and how she extracts the juice of the creative process, which then becomes her original artwork. Over time in her life, and this applies to all of us entrepreneurs, Flora really started out first as a practitioner, as an artist with brush on canvas, if you will, which she still does, but she's evolved her role to also be a teacher and now a retreat center owner as well. So she tells us a little bit about keeping herself alive as a young entrepreneur by working in grocery stores to earn a living while pursuing her art, and how she's really taken her approach to a whole different medium, including as an author, chatting a little bit about her new book called The Art of Aliveness: A Creative Return to What Matters Most. The parallels of how we create art is actually aligned with how we live. Flora will say how we paint is how we live. So, she shares with us advice regarding one of my questions about giving her 50-year-old self, she's almost 50, advice from her 60-year-old self, which involves filling up the well. It's all about recovery for high-performing creatives. Flora goes on to share a little bit about her new retreat called Nest. She tells us about some of her online courses, her FREE FLO community on Mighty Networks, and some of what she's got in store for the future. I think Flora is just a massively talented, charismatic artist who has a lot to say and a lot to teach us about being a successful creative as an entrepreneur. You can find more about Flora at florabowley.com. Without further delay, here's my interview with Flora Bowley.

In this episode I speak with Tracy Verdugo, Visual Artist, teacher and Author of the wildly popular book, “Paint Mojo”. For more than 22 years, Tracy has worked with thousands of people around the world - helping them to find their creative freedom. She shares the insights she's gained over these years including the one main thing she has found, that she thinks is the key to creating amazing art and how giving it to ourselves can carry over into other areas of our lives changing everything about how we live for the better. We talk about the power of learning how to break the rules to help us overcome fear & anxiety, to gain confidence in our creativity, and Tracy offers us some really practical ideas, insights and suggestions for harnessing and unleashing our creativity that I think you're going to find really useful AND she also tells us some beautiful stories (she has a true poet's heart). This is the kind of episode that fills you up with the feeling that you can in fact do it, and makes you want to get out your tools and materials and get going right away. Tracy's book “Paint Mojo” has over 25,000 copies in circulation - which is no surprise because when you hear her you immediately recognize her as one of those people that just makes you feel like anything's possible when it comes to your creativity. My favourite is when she tells us the story of her accidentally wandering into somebody's backyard and Guatemala and the ensuing conversation about creativity that changed her entire perspective on everything. Tracy Verdugo has taught over 100 workshops over the world and has a lot of insights to share that go a long way to helping us understand how to overcome the “I can't” feelings many of us have when it comes to expressing our creative selves.  Things Tracy and I talk about-The number one thing she learned in over 22 years of teaching over 100 workshops and classes around the world, about what humans need the most when it comes to creativity-How giving this one thing to ourselves can carry over into our lives and change everything about how we live our lives for the better-How traveling to Guatemala and meeting indigenous people for whom creativity was woven into every facet of their lives, was a light bulb moment for her in how fractured and silo-ed we have become in the west when it comes to accessing and enjoying this part of ourselves. -The yearning we all have to connect with the world of our ancestors and how creativity is the bridge to that can deliver us there-She told the story about a life-changing afternoon on a trip to Oaxaca when she wandered onto a family courtyard and had a serendipitous moment with a local man who was sitting in his garden there. He told her the thing he sees people doing in the west (when it comes to creativity) that he felt is making our whole culture sick. -The three things we can stop doing to find our creative freedom -The process she underwent to become someone who could allow creativity to move through her and stop creating from her rational mind. -The one main thing she has found after decades of teaching and creating art that she thinks is the key to creating amazing art -Her secrets for conjuring flow states The most common limiting belief she thinks we are taught that squashes our creativityABOUT Tracy VerdugoTracy is an inspiration instigator, prolific painter, bestselling author and lover of the written word, smitten traveler and soaker up of all that is beauty-full. She teaches her Paint Mojo and other creative workshops all over this amazing planet and reminds her students of the wonder that already resides within them. Her works are vibrant and filled with joy, inspired both by global travels and the simple beauty of the focused moment.Since 2000 Tracy has held 18 successful solo exhibitions and her works are held in collections both in Australia and internationally. This season our theme has been creativity.  We tend to think of creativity as art, music, dance and often designate being creative as an afterthought - something we allow ourselves to indulge in after we've done our real work. In our school system, our focus has shifted to exploring educational systems rooted in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.  Notice which topic got left out of that clever acronym. There is no art in STEM. And yet, in the interviews we've conducted this season, we've heard over and over again that some of the world's most innovative thought-leaders and scientists have a creative practice of some kind that supports them in being creative in their field. My guest today is Flora Bowley.  Flora is an artist, retreat facilitator, creative catalyst, and author of five books: The Art of Aliveness, Brave Intuitive Painting, Creative Revolution, Fresh Paint, and Earth is Holding You. Her colorful and layered paintings are also used to design calendars, cards, planners, journals, fabric, and unique product lines sold around the world. Flora encourages us to look at the art of our life, to explore how we can use creativity to unlock and unbind ourselves from old ways of being and thinking.  I hope that this interview will have you contemplating the role that creativity plays in your daily practice.  I hope that you'll explore new ways to break free from the trap of hard metrics that puts you in boxes instead of inviting you to create your own world.  Without creativity, science is just repetition.  Propagating the same ideas over and over again.  Limiting the questions we ask and closing us off to the possibility of finding the elegant solutions to our challenges.  Without art, we can't tap into our creativity.  If art changes everything, the very first thing it changes is our fundamental relationship with ourselves and our ability to move from inspiration to fulfillment, from idea to innovative solution.  Join me for this powerful conversation as we explore the role of creativity in transforming the world. Flora Bowley (pronounced bowl-lee) is an artist, author, and gentle guide whose creative process and soulful approach to living have touched thousands of lives. In her most recent book, The Art of Aliveness, Flora explores the vast ways in which the principles of creativity can serve as fuel for a more alive and awakened way of living in the world – no paintbrushes required. Find The Art of Aliveness at https://florabowley.com/books/ or at https://www.amazon.com/Art-Aliveness-Creative-Return-Matters/dp/1950253104/ Flora believes that creative expression is waiting to unfold within every person who is brave enough to trust, let go, and explore, and it is through this kind of heartfelt expression that truths are revealed, lives transform, and new worlds are born. She lives and creates in Portland, OR. The wholistic approach to wellness, education, stress-relief, alternative medicine, and more lies in the integration of the mind, body and spirit.  The phrase, mind, body, and spirit - the holy trinity of wholistic well-being - from its inception, gives us a dilemma. There is no separation between the mind, the body, and the spirit.  They are One.  And yet, the nature of the way the brain works and the materialistic interpretation of life, insists that the mind, the body, and the spirit are all separate entities, chugging along independently, hoping to be harnessed in unity somehow as the end-result of “awakened living.” Materialistic thinking wants us to rank mind, body, and spirit in order.  Which comes first?  Which one is the most important?  Which one controls the functioning of the rest? But if we try to answer these questions, we end up sending ourselves down a rabbit hole that mimics the question of the chicken and the egg.  Or the challenge set up by the phrase, “I am a liar.” If the phrase is true, then you are lying.  If the phrase is a lie, then you're telling the truth.  In their new book, The Quantum Brain, physicist Dr. Amit Goswami and physician Dr. Valentina Onisor explore the mind, body, and spirit dilemma by untangling the myths of our understanding of the brain.  By learning how to use the brain as a tool to help us influence the way in which we perceive meaning and purpose in our lives, we tap into our natural ability to align our mind and consequently our bodies and the flow of spirit through our lives in a way that optimizes our potential for well-being and abundance. We are designed to work in collaboration with the flow of Life's Intelligence working through us.  Join us for this mind-expanding conversation about the true purpose of the brain and how to optimize the function of your brain. Amit started the quantum activism movement, establishing a transformative education institution, Quantum Activism Vishwalayam (QAV) in India, based on quantum science and primacy of consciousness. Amit is a spiritual practitioner and calls himself a quantum activist in search of Wholeness. Valentina R. Onisor, MD is a family medicine physician who integrates alternative medicine systems into her practice.  Committed to consciousness awakening-related sciences and a pioneer of quantum integrative medicine, Valentina has made correlations between the ancient sciences and quantum physics, using both as a support for teachings. As a leader in transformational education, Valentina serves as a teacher, co-founder and Dean of Students at Quantum Activism Vishwalayam.  She is also a lecturer at Quantum Academy in Brazil. Innocent and Imprisoned, Does the Criminal Justice System Really Work with Professor Justin Brooks

Quantum Conversations: With Karen Curry Parker

Todays' Quantum Revolution podcast is a little different than some of our previous episodes.  We usually focus on the relationship between science and spirituality. This season we have expanded our carefully curated group of guests to include other kinds of Quantum Revolutionaries.  From innovative social activists like Frank Schaeffer, to experts leading the charge on criminal justice reform, like today's guest, Justin Brooks. In this episode we're going to look at the judicial system and explore the question, what happens when you're imprisoned for a crime you didn't commit - and is the penal system actually fulfilling its purpose of rehabilitation and equitable punishment? When confronting outdated and discriminatory systems, it requires creativity to find the solutions that work within the confines of a dysfunctional system and eventually discovering the solutions to transforming the system into something more equitable and sustainable.  Today's guest, Justin Brooks, is the embodiment of this kind of disruptive and compassionate creativity. We can't transform the criminal justice system if we're not taking a realistic look at what is actually happening.  If the goal of the criminal justice system is to rehabilitate people, we're failing.  Decades of research have shown that prison is the least effective place to rehabilitate offenders. Studies have indicated that a stint in prison increases the likelihood that inmates will reoffend.  Many inmates start off as young offenders who are deeply traumatized and become more traumatized by a system that clearly does not work. What would a just judiciary system look like?  How could we better rehabilitate people who commit crimes so that they can be reintroduced back into society as healed individuals?  How do we tackle racism in the current system?  These are the questions we must be asking as a society. We might not have the answer to these questions yet, but it's time we start imagining new possibilities.  And then taking the incremental steps as they appear in front of us. One step you can take today is to visit californiainnocenceproject.org and make a donation.  Your contribution is used to help innocent people get off death row.  Justin Brooks is the Director and Co-Founder of the California Innocence Project. He has practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington D.C., Michigan, and Illinois. Over the course of his career he has served as counsel on several high-profile criminal cases, including the Brian Banks case which was the subject of an award winning movie, Brian Banks, in 2018. Since 1999, Professor Brooks has also worked extensively in Latin America. He is the Founder and Director of California Western's Latin American Institute for Law and Justice, an organization devoted to training law students and lawyers in Latin America and improving justice systems. He is also the Founder and Director of Red Inocente, an organization devoted to starting and supporting innocence organizations throughout Latin America. He has been recognized several times by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. In 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine recognized him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award.   Justin has dedicated most of his professional - and personal - life to overturning wrongful convictions.  His passion has spurred him to create Innocence Projects all over the world and to train young lawyers to work to help free innocent people and transform the judicial system. In her most recent book, The Art of Aliveness, Flora explores the vast ways in which the principles of creativity can serve as fuel for a more alive and awakened way of living in the world – no paintbrushes required. I so hope you enjoy this deep and rich conversation with Flora Bowley about how the lessons derived from painting can inspire a more alive, awakened and embodied way of living. Some of the key moments include; Flora explains what she means by ‘fully committing yourself while remaining open to change' and how it can help us develop as artists and people. Why contrast in both life and painting is a powerful tool for growth. How Flora processed profound grief to arrive in a beautiful place of peace, acceptance and growth. Mars and Mercury are both retrograde right now, making it an important time to listen to what you’re feeling, but be very careful around what you actually communicate if you feel old anger and suppressed feelings rising up. Venus in Virgo receives power and strength from both Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn this week, and there could be physical manifestations that finally connect and show up after you’ve put in the work and effort. Venus and Mercury retrograde both enter Libra on October 27, adding some well-needed objectivity and words to what we’ve been feeling intensely, and providing some breathing room to assess priorities. In this episode, I talk about the artistic languages I communicate in, how I built and continue to build my creative toolbox through art classes, online art tutorials, and art and craft books. “The more colors you have on your palette, the more you can work with, and the more you can aspire to.” Donald McKayle, dancer and choreographer, first black man to direct and choreograph a Broadway musical. I think of each artistic medium as a different creative language. The way I communicate and express myself in one is different than another. Collage, drawing, inks, watercolor, acrylics, textiles, stitching, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, dance, cooking, writing...these are all creative languages. Expanding and deepening our creative language abilities can offer us more resources to draw upon to express ourselves. I think of it as building my creative toolbox. One very large conundrum is encouraging originality when teaching art. You want your students to come up with their own ideas and create their own style, but in the beginning, they don't have the skills to do so, nor have they likely figured out their own style.  As an online art teacher, I struggle with this paradox a lot. I give my students the skills they need, but I don't want them to copy me. This is a crutch for them that can be a problem in the long run. Although, I understand that in the beginning, copying a little to get a feel for their art so they can discover and learn their own style is normal. But it's a difficult balancing act. Today, I've invited artist Flora Bowley on to The Inspiration Place Podcast to discuss this! We talk about how we feel when our students copy us and how to balance teaching the necessary skills to our students while still encouraging originality. We also share how Flora is selling and promoting her original art so you can get some good tips for how to do so with your original art. In this podcast, you will discover... How do you feel about your art students copying you? How to balance teaching skills and encouraging originality. How Flora is currently selling and promoting her original art, and some tips and strategies for you. Mentoring for guiding your career. Positive results that come from “just creating”. The wounding from people telling us we “aren’t good enough”. Healing, empowering, and practicing ways of being through creativity. Your soul’s calling and your creative offerings to the world. “Intuitive wandering” exercise and how to implement it. Dropping into your intuition and finding wisdom there. The flow that happens when you engage in the creative process. Simple, accessible exercises to get your creative flow going. Flora’s biggest inspirations. Staying present and being open to focus on what IS working. Teaching a workshop including “all the beautiful parts of myself”. Moving forward for Flora: collaboration with others and co-mingling their creations through workshops. Resources: www.florabowley.com Find Flora’s courses, workshops, videos, and products. Imagine life as your canvas, but instead of having a clear plan that you stoically cling to, you let the art unfold and evolve as you go. When you start worrying and contracting in fear, wondering if this is it or if you are good enough, you remember, it is only paint- it is not life or death. Flora Bowley artist, visionary and teacher, lets her brave intuitive painting style inform not only her art but her life as well - her art being the muscle building ground for a life less scripted. And people love it. Not only is Flora a successful artist in her own right, but she has found her purpose in leading thousands of women on their own brave intuitive journeys. Flora also shares with us: + The gifts for everyone in asking for help + The courage of asking " is this still working for me?" + How just like people, paintings need to go through something uncomfortable to have depth + Why being stuck is such a great sign - this is a beauty!! + Why it is okay and actually quite revolutionary to allow yourself to constantly change For more info go to www.nicolemathieson.com/podcast9
