The Florida State Fair opens February 8 and runs through February 19th at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa. It's that time of year when it's time to finally do away with those New Year's resolutions. Counting calories is strictly forbidden and carbs are king. This year, there are the usual things on the menu like cotton candy, popcorn, deep fried Twinkies, pizza, turkey legs and fried dough. And there's no fair in Florida where you won't find gator nuggets for the adventurous eater. For those with a sweet tooth, there are some creative new items to hunt down. I will definitely find the Oreo Cookie Cinnamon Bun that Cinnamon Saloon is serving up this year. What an awesome combination of words. And with the Barbie movie being so popular, Paulette's Food Service has created the Barbie Funnel Cake. It's got pink icing, powdered sugar and various kinds of sprinkles. But how about those really weird fair foods? The ones that you dare someone to try. There are always a handful of strange, weird and cringeworthy creations at the Florida State Fair. 2024 will be no different. Pickles are being incorporated into pizza and Pop Rocks. For those who love doughnut burgers, there's the next level with honey buns and cheese curds. And Mama Jane, famous for her creations on the cable TV show Carnival Eats is back with a new savory funnel cake that is a big departure from the usual. Let's dive in. Here are the 5 oddest fair foods that'll raise your eyebrows when you wander around the 2024 Florida State Fair. Then you can see more things on the Florida State Fair menu that sound a bit more appealing if you're not the type that dips your dill pickle in chocolate.

“Mama Jane” Harris is a favorite on TV shows like Carnival Eats. There's always a line for her fair food creations for the Florida State Fair and Florida Strawberry Festival. Today she let me in on her two new creations for Tampa and Plant City next year. The Florida State Fair Head to the Florida State Fairgrounds between February 8 and February 19 to try Mama's newest savory funnel cake: The Temperamental Hog Funnel Cake. Mama wanted to get crazy and do a savory creation that would be all-new. It's a funnel cake with cornmeal that gives it a bit of a crunch, barbecue spices and there's pulled pork on time. Then you pick your temperament: happy, angry, or FURIOUS! There's a thinned down cream cheese glaze to cool the cake down. It's not sweet – it's a straight cream cheese flavor. The Florida Strawberry Festival Love Almond Joy candy bars? Mama has nailed the flavor with her new Almond Joy Funnel Cake. It's got the chocolate, almonds and coconut flavor you love in the candy bar. Mama said she's a big fan of the candy bar – it's one of her favorites, so this one was all her idea. It's a traditional flavor with the coconut and almond topping and drizzled chocolate. If neither of those spark your curiosity, Mama Jane will also have her usual elephant ears and other funnel cakes too, like strawberry cheesecake, red velvet or the turtle with the chocolate and caramel. You can find Mama's truck near the main stage.
Brook Cutchin is the secretary of the Deane Bozeman FFA Chapter in Southport, Florida. She is also just 16 years of age and slated to graduate high school one year early later this month. She is heading to college next fall and has been accepted to a programed called "3 & 3", which means in her fourth year of her bachelor's degree she simultaneously begins graduate school, which for her will be studying the law to become an attorney and advocate for agriculture. Brook first got introduced to the FFA her 9th grade year of high school when she took a required, introduction to agriculture class. At that point she realized that she wanted to raise livestock, and she has been engaged in the FFA ever since. She even raised and showed her own pig, showing and selling it at the Florida State Fair this past February. The FFA has exposed Brook to many experiences that she never expected, and it played a major role in accelerating her time high school and graduating early. One of the experiences that Brook had through the FFA, that drew my attention to her chapter, was facilitating a goat yoga class for people in her community. She, along with other chapter members and supporters of her FFA chapter, put on a goat yoga class, for free. Donations to help the chapter build a livestock barn were accepted, but there was no charge to attend. I've always wondered what the appeal of goat yoga is. Brook informed me that the point is to help people with anxiety about doing yoga in front of others, to let that go because everyone is watching the goats and not each other. I certainly believe that is what happens.

The Joseph family has been fighting for justice in Andrew's name since the day his life was stolen on February 7, 2014, as the police responsible for his death elude accountability under the veil of qualified immunity.

Back in the day when I was little, we planned camping trip routes to our destination like Opryland, but we didn't necessarily plan where we would stop for the night and park our motorhome. If we came upon a campground that was full, we'd just keep driving until we saw a billboard for another campground. When we found one it was anyone's guess what type of adventure we signed up for. The kids of course just wanted a swimming pool, and we were always disappointed when there wasn't one. Why wasn't there one? I'm Mechiel Kopaska host of the Fearless Innovator podcast and That's what we're going to discuss today, the differences between overnight parks and Destination parks. Overnight parks really haven't changed that much, but what has changed is the amount of people travelling and looking for their perfect camping spot. Today, you need to do your homework before you start travelling and you need to make reservations well in advance as the shear number of RV travelers has increased significantly in the last 2 years, so finding your perfect spot may be a bit more challenging. You also need to know your family's needs while travelling. Like I said before one of our needs were the kids wanted a swimming pool, mom and dad didn't much care what else as long as the kids could be preoccupied. I'm sure if I'd ask my dad, he would have said he wanted a level spot large enough for the camper with hookups. Hookups back then were nothing like they are today, our generator was not built in and there was no cable or fiber because there were no TV's or internet. I know there are a lot of new RV'ers hitting the road these days, so I'd like to help everyone understand that not all parks are created equally and you should know what type you're going to because it could save you from writing a bad review on the park! Let's first talk about Overnight parks. Overnight parks are generally well advertised along the highways with HUGE billboards because they are only getting 1-2 nights of revenue, they need to do a lot more advertising. The overnight parks are generally found within 5 miles just off interstates or major roadways. Once you're in the park, most have no frills, no swimming pools just the basics and just looks like a parking lot. The guests that generally come just stay for 1 or 2 nights and then they move on to their destination park. They usually have a higher vacancy rate as people are just passing through. Which means it's much easier to get into one of these parks. The overnight park will have limited employees and more of a self-park feature. You may not even see anyone as you can book your reservations online and pay online. Pricing for an overnight park will be less expensive because the park itself has less to offer and they have no overhead. The overnight parks have a definite purpose and are very much needed as the average RV traveler will only drive 4 hours a day. If your destination is 800 miles away, that's possibly 3 overnight stays before you reach your destination. If my dad was driving, he'd only stop once! Destination parks. Our destination one year was Opryland in Nashville. These days destination parks have a lot to offer. I just visited Renegades on the River 2 weeks ago, it had a marina for the fishermen, a Tiki bar with live music and a restaurant onsite. The Spirit of the Suwanee River Park here in Florida is nothing but a Music venue that brings in BIG Music names. I know of another park that has hosted Burger challenges, Car Shows, Corn Hole Competitions, Chili Cook-offs, Super Bowl parties, the ideas are limitless, and I have yet to see someone playing pickle ball! Destination parks are also well advertised, however now the billboard is going to attract you with all the amenities the park offers like 4 tickets to Opryland, Swimming pool, 4 show tickets, free shuttle, a kids play area and an ice cream shop onsite, etc. Destination parks are typically located near the destination or may even offer a music venue onsite like the Spirit of the Suwanee River Park. Guests will normally stay for a week because this area can keep your family occupied with a number of things to do in the area. If you're a snowbird you will stay for a season typically just to get you out of the northern weather. It's not every day that you have to have an activity but it's nice if the area has a lot to do. Most snowbirds love to eat out – so good reasonable restaurants are always a hit with you. You will also look for a good car swap meet or flea market. Here in my area, we have the Florida State Fair and the Strawberry Festival, and they used to have a Grand Ole Opry day. These parks will require advanced booking, sometimes even the year before. Most snowbird parks allow you to prebook for the following season with an advanced down payment. If you're the summer vacation RV'er make sure to plan ahead! The destination parks will have a lot of employees such as greeters at the gate to show you to your exact RV spot. You will notice how well the property is taken care of by the maintenance crews and the well-manicured lawns. There will always be someone in the office to answer any questions that you have from prebooking to exiting the park on your departure day. Some destination parks allow for an overnight parking. These parks are capitalizing on both markets. Pricing at a destination park will be significantly higher based on what the park itself can offer. If you're Fort Wilderness, you can pretty much charge what you want, because the people will come strictly because there is SOOOO much to do at this park. My last bit of advice is read the reviews! The reviews will tell you what others did not like about the park. Now, take each with a grain of salt as there can be some sketchy reviews and certainly dig in and find the good reviews. Key point is do your research ahead of time to ensure you know the surrounding area and you know what your park offers or does not offer in amenities before you book! I'm Mechiel Kopaska of the Fearless Innovator Podcast, I hope you enjoyed this episode. Cheryl Flood knows she's one of the lucky ones. As executive director of the Florida State Fair, she is one of the few fair managers who actually had a fair back in 2020 just prior to the Covid pandemic being declared. While her 2020 fair was a success, she did not escape the pandemic unscathed. As the vaccine began to be distributed the decision had to be made to delay the 2021 Florida State Fair by several months. We talk about that decision and more on today's episode.
Ryan talks to Tampa Bay Times Entertainment & Events Reporter Sharon Wynne about events happening around the Tampa Bay area this weekend, including the Valspar Championship and the final weekend of the Florida State Fair.
The Florida State Fair will look a little different this year, due to the pandemic. But one thing remains the same: The food will be as over-the-top as ever. Jane lives in Pensacola and travels to fairs across the U.S. and Canada about eight months out of the year. I spoke to Jane as she revved up to hit the Florida State Fair in Tampa. It kicks off today and runs through May 2. There are some "gotta try that" creations and a few "uh, no thanks... hard pass" items on the menu at this year's Florida State Fair in Tampa. My bias for apple desserts will be a big factor here. The one item that has made headlines more than any other this year is one in my "hard pass" column... the pickle pizza. I like unique. But maybe not THAT unique. Mama Jane comes to Florida every spring to deal that lethal blow to your New Year's resolution when she sets up shop at the Florida State Fair in Tampa and at Plant City's Florida Strawberry Festival. Several years ago, she created my favorite fair food of all time... funnel bacon on a stick. It's been featured on national TV and several big name country music stars have raved about it. She would take a thick piece of bacon, dip it in funnel cake batter and fry it to a beautiful golden brown. Then she'd sprinkle powdered sugar and top it with a maple butter drizzle. It was best breakfast you've ever had on a stick. Sadly, Funnel Bacon on a Stick was finally retired last year in Plant City. But not to fear... Mama has some new magic she's made in the lab. She joined me to tell me all about her plans to carb you up in 2020 at the fairs.
This one is a blast of fun and joy! Mr. Tommy and I hit it off right away and we had an awesome conversation as he set up for his concert at the Florida State Fair. He even sang me a song! "Mr. Tommy, Tommy Girvin, is a dynamic performer, entertainer, author & educator with 35+ years of experience as a touring rock musician and musical director with the famous rock singer Eddie Money. Mr. Tommy’s mission is to bring children joy, encourage imagination & creativity and build self-esteem through music and musical experiences. Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus that is an ongoing, ever changing, enchanting and inspiring music and exercise enrichment program. Endorsed by the Early Learning Coalition, this music classroom on wheels brings a fun, active, dynamic, and educational music session to pre-schools and children’s events that serves over 300+ kids a week." Stay tuned until the end of the show for his songs 'Hippopotamus' and 'If I was a Fish'. They're both instant classics! Continue reading Episode #207 – Mr Tommy on the site.

Our special guest on this episode is the Bureau Chief of Pest Eradication and Control and the Director of the Citrus Health Response Program (CHRP), Callie Walker. Callie discusses Citrus Black Spot disease, its affects on the Florida citrus industry and what FDACS-DPI and CHRP are doing in relation to it. As a seventh generation Floridian, Callie has a lifetime of experience when it comes to the Florida citrus industry and her insight into the issue of CBS is educational and enlightening. Follow the link below to learn more about Citrus Black Spot. https://crec.ifas.ufl.edu/extension/black_spot/citrus_black_spot.shtml February was an exciting month for DPI as our Entomology and Apiary sections both had booths at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. Every year DPI has a booth in Insect Encounters where fair goers can pet or even hold an insect on display. Carolyn Duever won the parking spot contest this month by having the closest guess to the number of candy pieces in the Jar of Hearts. Finally we had three major employment changes this month including Brandi Simmons, Assistant Bureau of the Apiary section in the Bureau of Plant and Apiary Inspection, Christine Zamora, Export Specialist for the Bureau of Plant and Apiary Inspection, and Steve Hildebrandt, Special Projects Coordinator in the Office of Administration.
