The Godfather of Strength and Conditioning. Fresh from the misty mountains of Peru, Al and Hask are joined by Hask's former Conditioning Coach at Wasps, Craig White; a man whose influence has shaped the face of High-Performance Coaching in rugby. With troublesome tales of managing Trevor Leota at Wasps alongside Shaun Edwards, Craig shares the biggest lessons he learned working with Clive Woodward and Warren Gatland on the 2005 and 2009 Lions Tours. For Craig, everything changed when he took a breather from the hyper-masculine world of rugby just months before the 2011 World Cup to go on a yoga retreat that opened his eyes to mindfulness, nature and a more spiritual style of coaching… Season 5 is sponsored by Continental Tyres.

Here's what Sir Clive and I will cover:The BIG LIE you've been told about what it takes to have a successful practice and the uncomfortable truth you need to hear. (Most optometrists do not want to believe it, but those who embrace this truth will experience the income, freedom, and success others only dream about.)How to grow your revenue by 20% or more this year without spending any more money on marketing or hiring more staff. (Yes, I know it sounds unbelievable, but I have implemented this system and experienced this phenomenon several times in my practice's growth trajectory.)How fixing this one thing can give you a team of superstars who increase your profits without wasting time or money on hiring the wrong people. (The secret is hiding in plain sight, but only the most elite practices know what it is.)How YOU can be a far more effective leader this year – with the personal help and methods of World #1 Coach Sir Clive Woodward. (Whether you're a seasoned leader, trying to step back, or still trying to figure it all out Sir Clive will make you a stronger and far more confident and skilled leader)How to succeed faster in 2025 – Have you been spinning your wheels trying to implement changes in your practice? You'll probably shake your head wondering, "Why didn't I think of that," when you hear this but immediately want to implement what we share with you.)And much, much more.
I begin today with a heart felt quote from Minnie Driver in her book, Managing Expectations. She talks about phoning her mother to come and pick her up.Her mother ignores her.So today I wanted to read through 10 biographies of well-known people and their stories of feeling like they were captive or “counting down the days like prisoners” as Bear Grylls puts it.I share the words of John Rentoul's biography of Tony Blair where he tells the story of how he tried to run away.I talk about how Clive Woodward, the former England Rugby manager and World Cup winner ran away 3 times from his boarding school only to be sent back each time by his father.Other biographies include: Stephen Fry, John Peel, Roald Dahl, Christine Jack, Jack Whitehall and Jeremy Paxman. What a fascinating subject.#captivity #prison #boardingschoolTake care,Piers--- Piers is an author and a men's transformational coach and therapist who works mainly with trauma, boarding school issues, addictions and relationship problems. In this week's episode, Nick chats with Clare Hill, CEO at Sysdoc. If you're a regular listener to this podcast, you'll know by now that we love taking a deep dive into the different routes our guests' careers have taken. Clare's story is a fascinating one and shows that you don't need to start your career in the industry to reach the top. Having spent the first 15 years of her career working in advertising, Clare decided that she needed a career that worked better for her homelife. With two young children at home, the socialising and client events that were commonplace in advertising at the time wasn't sustainable Through a chance conversation with a friend she learnt about Sysdoc, and decided to make the bold leap into consulting. Over the last 25 years, Clare's been on a hugely exciting roller coaster ride that's seen her help navigate Sysdoc through the telco boom and bust of the early 2001s, the financial crash of the mid-2000s and the recent global pandemic. At the same time she's seen her career skyrocket, going from a brand new consultant to becoming CEO of the UK business, a role that she's now held since 2010. With so much experience under her belt and a fantastic journey through the ups and downs of building a consulting firm, Nick knew they would have a ton to speak about and Clare shares tons of great advice for you in this episode. We dive into some fascinating topics, including: · Making the move from industry into consulting, how Clare found it and why Sysdoc are just as willing to hire industry professionals as they are experienced consultants. · Sysdoc's growth journey and how they've been able to retain their entrepreneurial spirit, even after 35 years. · And the founding principles of Sysdoc and why aviation thinking is at the heart of everything they do. This fantastic episode covers so much ground. If you're starting out on your own consultancy journey, thinking of making the leap from industry to consulting, or simply want to find out more about how Clare's consulting career took flight, you'll love this episode of Climb in Consulting. Today we're joined by ex England international and now head of Dubai 7's Mathew Tait to help break down what has been labelled as 'the darkest week in english rugby history' by Clive Woodward and the same could be said for the Welsh. We also discuss Wales woes, having lost 75% of their matches this year they're arguably in a worse place then England currently and with rumours of Gatland returning to take over the job from Wayne Pivac - we analyse how things have got so dour for the men in Cardiff. Plus we delve into Mathew Taits career which saw him; be victim to one of the most famous dump tackles in history from Gavin Henson which resulted in him being dropped for 18 months, almost scoring a try in the 2007 world cup final which could have tipped the tie in Englands favour and we find out which player Prince Harry drunkenly gave a love bite to in Paris..... Welcome back for 2022 and we're giving a nod to the pending Six Nations series by travelling north and interviewing rugby royalty in the form of Sir Clive Woodward, the former England and British and Irish Lions player and coach...and of course that little thing that happened in Sydney back in 2003. We tackle the politics of being England head coach, the difficulties of coaching the Lions and we dive into Clive's time when he was living in Manly in the 1980s and playing for the Marlins against powerhouses like Randwick and being told to "take it up"! Did this playing stint in Australia help inform his approach to winning the Rugby World Cup and what is his view on the current state of rugby union in Australia?Matt also brings us up to date on the pending release of the film and what we can expect in 2022. “Will it make the boat go faster?” is a question that helped change the life and the sporting success of Ben Hunt-Davis MBE. Although Ben is now an Olympic Gold medallist and renowned performance consultant, success in the rowing boat hadn't always come as frequently for Ben as you may have thought. By his own admission, Ben had underachieved on the Olympic and World Championship stage for the first years of his career. It was on a drunken night out, after another disappointing performance, that Ben and his crew agreed that something needed to change. In 1998, they decided to construct their new training regime around the question of ‘Will it make the boat go faster?'. They asked themselves that simple question before every action they took in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics. The strategy - with an evidence-based approach - allowed the team to see improvements within months. So much so that, Ben's crew won gold at Sydney 2000, and stood atop of the podium as Olympic champions. Will It Make The Boat Go Faster is now the name of Ben's consultancy which is enlisted by companies across the world to help them reach high performance. The strategy has been written into sporting folklore and is trusted by the likes of Clive Woodward showing that it is applicable to any sport. It can also be applied to business or everyday life, and Ben explains that all you have to do is identify what your 'crazy goal' is and understand what the question is that you need to ask yourself to achieve that goal. What shone through in our conversation with Ben was just how honest you have to be – with yourself and others – in order to achieve your goals. He also explained how having clarity about what the goal is, can propel a team towards success. As Ben suggests, whatever your ‘boat' may be, why do anything that doesn't make it go faster. If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out Ben's website www.willitmaketheboatgofaster.com and read his book Will It Make The Boat Go Faster.

For most of its history, the People’s Republic of China limited public discussion of the war against Japan. It was an experience of victimization—and one that saw Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek fighting for the same goals. But now, as China grows more powerful, the meaning of the war is changing. At the end of World War II, the United States dominated the world militarily, economically, and in moral standing – seen as the victor over tyranny and a champion of freedom. But it was clear – to some – that the Soviet Union was already executing a plan to expand and foment revolution around the world. The American government’s strategy in response relied on the secret efforts of a newly-formed CIA. In this week's episode Scott Anderson joins us to discuss his new book 'The Quiet Americans' chronicling the exploits of four American spies with journalist Hugo Lindgren. They had survived Auschwitz, hidden and fought in forests and endured death marches—now they were taking on the Royal Navy, running the British blockade of Palestine. From Eastern Europe to Israel via Germany and Italy, Rosie Whitehouse speaks to Edward Lucas about her new book following the footsteps of those secret passengers and uncovering their extraordinary stories—some told for the first time. For it was not the British government that began seizing chunks of India in the mid-18th century, as historian William Dalrymple points out, but a dangerously unregulated private company headquartered in one small office, five windows wide, in London, and managed in India by a violent, ruthless and mentally unstable corporate predator — Robert Clive. India’s transition to colonialism, in other words, took place under a for-profit corporation, which existed for the purpose of enriching its investors. In this episode Dalrymple speaks with broadcaster Kavita Puri about why he believes the story of the East India Company has never been more relevant to understanding our world today. Every week in England and Wales, two women are killed by a current or former partner. And still we ask the question: 'Why didn't she leave?' According to author award winning Jess Hill, we should be asking 'Why did he do it?' In this episode Hill speaks to Rosamund Urwin about the perpetrators of abuse and the systems that enable them. Her radical reframing of domestic abuse takes us beyond the home and explores some innovative solutions such as women only police stations in Latin America. Human beings, we’re taught, are by nature selfish and governed by self-interest. From Hobbes’ theory about the state of nature to Richard Dawkins’ ‘selfish gene’, the roots of this belief are deeply ingrained in Western thought. But historian Rutger Bregman believes we have got human nature wrong – and that deep down we are all pretty decent. On August 3 Bregman came to the Intelligence Squared to persuade us that it is realistic, as well as revolutionary, to assume that people are good. And that the instinct to cooperate rather than compete, trust rather than distrust, has an evolutionary basis going right back to the beginnings of Homo Sapiens. In conversation with journalist and author Helen Lewis, Bregman will discuss some of the world’s most famous studies and events and reframe them, providing a new perspective on the last 200,000 years of human history. Democracy is in crisis, and unaccountable and untraceable flows of money are helping to destroy it. According to Peter Geoghegan, politicians lie gleefully, making wild claims that can be shared instantly with millions of people on social media. Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro and populists in many other countries are the beneficiaries. This week Geoghegan speaks to Nick Cohen, columnist at the Observer, about the problems democracy faces and what can be done about it. Race, class, gender. These are the categories that are commonly thought to define our lives. But Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson argues that ultimately the determining factor in societies is a more powerful, unspoken system of divisions: caste. Sir Clive Woodward has spent a lifetime in high-performance environments, from the rugby field to the boardroom. He gave broadcaster Matthew Stadlen a masterclass in achieving peak performance. After leading the England Rugby team to victory in the 2003 World Cup, delivering Olympic glory in 2012 as Director of Sport at Team GB, and going on to help some of the world’s biggest brands and businesses deliver peak performance, there are few if any men better qualified to teach the skills of leadership than Sir Clive Woodward. In this conversation with broadcaster and journalist Matthew Stadlen, Sir Clive distils the essence of his philosophy of leadership. Drawing on his unique perspective of the events of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Sir Clive blends analysis, insight and anecdote to reveal how to lead the culture of a winning team – in any environment. Every individual position in rugby requires a unique set of skills, knowledge and expertise that collectively form a balanced team; the same is true in any successful business or organisation. From 1 to 15, the former England and British and Irish Lions coach identifies the key attributes and uses these defining traits to explain his collaborative 'Teamship' leadership style.

A great reckoning is taking place in the wake of the brutal killing of George Floyd and the protests that followed his death. Companies and organisations are looking afresh at how they can do a better job of combatting institutional bias and racism. Employees are increasingly speaking out about their experiences and calling for change. In this special event this Thursday June 25, Intelligence Squared brought together two leading voices from the arts, Kwame Kwei-Armah, artistic director of the Young Vic, and Idris Elba, star of The Wire and Luther, to discuss what should happen and is likely to happen in the world of culture as we move forward. Given all the promises made and broken over the years, will things be different this time? Will there be deep structural change so that we see more Black and Brown people – not just on the stage or screen – but in positions of real power and decision-making? In his entertaining and informative new book, Sir Clive Woodward analyses the events of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, offering his unique perspective on the performance of players and coaches, from Owen Farrell and Kieran Read, to Eddie Jones and Steve Hansen. HOW TO WIN: Talent Alone is Not Enough is much more than the story of a tournament, however. It is the distillation of a philosophy of leadership developed during a lifetime in high-performance environments, from the rugby field to the boardroom. Tapping into his experience of winning the 2003 World Cup, being a part of the leadership team that delivered Olympic Success in 2012 and lessons drawn from Japan 2019, the author delivers a go-to manual in how to improve both individual and team performance in order to reach the pinnacle in sport and in business. With a fascinating blend of analysis, insight and anecdote, and the highs and lows of a memorable Rugby World Cup as the setting, Clive reveals how to lead the culture of a winning team - in any context.
