For Valentine's Day, we gently encouraged our significant others to be on the podcast with us. We played the Newlywed Game and still have no idea if there were really any winners at all. You'll have to tell us!
Hope you had a happy President's Day! It's a day when Americans everywhere pay their respects to the country's highest office. Trump even promised not to incite any insurrections for the next 24 hours. Trump's impeachment trial is over and, spoiler alert, he won, and America lost. One important piece of evidence was a phone call where Trump told Kevin McCarthy "I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are" and McCarthy said "Do you know who the f*ck you're talking to?" Trump replied "Isn't this Kevin McCallister from Home Alone 2?" During impeachment, as a way to ignore the gory details of the riot being retold, several Republicans were seen doodling on paper at their desks. As it turns out, the senators were just inspired by what they were hearing about nooses and gallows, and were playing a crazy game of hangman. This is cute. For Valentine's Day, the first lady had a lovely surprise waiting for President Biden on the North Lawn: heart-shaped signs saying "family", "kindness", "unity", and "healing". What a nice change to finally have a First Lady who knows how to Be Best. Here's something scary. According to a new survey, 4 in 10 Republicans say political violence may be necessary. The other 6 out of 10 said it's absolutely necessary! All voting will be settled in the Octagon! "Ladies and gentlemen, after 2 arm-bars and 3 rear-naked chokes, universal background checks for firearms are the law of the land!" Finally, several news outlets are reporting that gun nut and conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene had cheated on her husband with a polyamorous tantric sex guru. Wow, that QAnon Shaman really gets around!
Good Morning it's Thursday February 18th, and this is The Wenatchee World's podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today --- As Gov. Jay Inslee announces relaxed restrictions, restaurant owners give a sigh of relief. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. Restaurant owners give a sigh of relief with the return of indoor dining. They can finally begin the process of slowly recovering after months of closed doors. Gov. Jay Inslee announced relaxed COVID-19 rules for much of the state last Thursday. Inslee has also acknowledged that closures have been difficult, but that efforts have paid off. And now, restaurant owners in Wenatchee and around the state are excited to be open. Edwin Fonseca, is co-owner at La Tortuga Loca in Wenatchee. He told us that he feels like people are eager to go out and have the dining experience again -- which for them, is a good thing. Because of the restaurant's small size and ease of transporting food — tacos, tortas, enchiladas, and more — reopening under the governor's Phase 2 rules is fairly simple.. Fonseca and his father also took pay cuts so they would not have to lay off employees when indoor dining was shut down, so they are in no rush to find employees now that things have opened back up. Fonseca said he was optimistic about their chances and grateful to the community for their support. But Alma's Kitchen cannot afford to bring back more employees -- even while at 25% indoor capacity. Marco Ramirez, the son of co-owner Alma Ramirex said they were scrambling to get ready. According to Ramirez the last shutdown hit Alma's Kitchen during the worst possible time. They were down to the last dollar when the third round of PPP loans came through. Though they're thankful, he said it seems like we're always pushing it to the extreme. And unlike La Tortuga Loca, takeout is not feasible for them. Alma's Kitchen hopes to be back at 100% indoor dining in March, but for now, anything is better than nothing. Ramirez also said that surviving each shutdown has left Alma's Kitchen with huge debt from the Paycheck Protection Program -- the program that was originally a lifeline for them. And with the prospect of returning back to Phase 1 -- takeout only -- well Alma's Kitchen will do all it can to remain open, but without additional help it would be impossible. Juan Murriz Arroyo, the owner of El Rey Azteca in East Wenatchee said that the move to Phase 2 is bittersweet. While it means that COVID-19 cases are going down, for him it's also a reminder of how much he would like to see things go back to normal. Before Inslee's announcement on Thursday, El Rey Azteca was looking at one more month before they would have to close. Arroyo said he's happy with 25% and will continue to adapt to the situation but much like Ramirez, he remains worried about returning to Phase 1. Finally, we spoke with Craig Still, the owner of Garlini's Napoletana in Wenatchee. Still said he is thrilled about the move to 25% indoor dining. Garlini's had been working with the “open air” protocols that were allowing customers to dine inside as long as people were spaced six feet apart, and windows and doors were kept open. But with the transition to Phase 2, he no longer has to do that. Thanks to a takeout program and their customers, Garlini's was able to survive, and moving back to Phase 2 has infused some energy into the staff. Next, For Valentine's Day, local residents shared their memories of love. Today we're excited to share a few. Jennifer Thacker found her picture-perfect ending at Liberty Theatre in 1991. The East Wenatchee resident was 20 at the time. She was working as a box office attendant at the Wenatchee movie theater when she met her husband Sam. Sam worked at the local Domino's, and his co-worker was dating Jennifer's co-worker. Sam tried to get the co-worker to give him Jennifer's number, but was too shy to ask in person. So Jennifer ultimately took matters into her own hands. She went into Domino's and asked him out. For their first date, Jennifer got free tickets from the theater to see the newly-released Blake Edwards film “Switch”. A year later Jennifer and Sam were married at Lincoln Rock State Park, and they have remained together since. The Thackers were just one of 30 Wenatchee Valley residents to share her memorable location of love for The Wenatchee World's first Locations of Love map. Here are some other highlights: Bob H. found his high-school sweetheart at Cashmere High School: They met in high school and got married on prom day -- It was cheaper to rent the tux once than have to rent it twice. They've been married almost 30 years. Victoria V. gave birth to their love at Central Washington Hospital: Victoria's first Love Location was at the Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, where she gave birth to her daughter Payton-Olivia. And a few of our readers celebrated love at Mission Ridge: Brian H had one of his first dates with his now wife at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort. She had never skied before and he wanted to teach her how. Time went by and he ended up popping the question in that same location. They've been married for four years now and still go skiing all the time. Melanie R said she and her husband both grew up in the Wenatchee Valley but met after high school. They love the outdoors. They set their wedding date for August 8th of 1998 at Mission Ridge. They've been married now for 22 years and still live in the valley. And finally, Anne and Rod H. were sitting on the top of a rock at graffiti corner on Mission Ridge Road after a good day of skiing --- they drank a beer, looked out at the valley, and were thankful for the good life they've had. To check out more of these stories view the full map online at wenatcheeworld.com/locationsoflove. Clare Barron is a playwright and actor from Wenatchee. In 2015 she won the Obie Award for Playwriting for You Got Older. She was also a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Dance Nation. Barron became interested in theatre in her early teens. She was in a Shakespeare troupe for children Wenatchee, which was run by the playwright Heidi Schreck's mother, Sherry Schreck. Barron went on to attended the Tisch Summer Program while in high school, and then Yale University. Thanks for listening. For Valentine's Day Eve. A bouquet assortment of biochemical thermodynamic principles and metaphysical event ontologies. To finish my thoughts: Is life necessary? How to answer this question? One way is to ask if there is sufficient reason for its existence. Outside of spiritual or theological discussion, the answer is compellingly obscure especially since we find no authentic examples except on our planet. If life is contingent, where does it come from, how does it come about and why does it exist? You see where this is going. Why is there a physical universe? Why isn’t there just nothingness? Answering with the typical “it just is!” only further confounds the question. The word “just” here, operates syntactically with contingency. By that I mean, proposing that the modality of an event, life in this context, simply "is" a state function, makes no claim that the event "must be". And so…we are back to the beginning. A beginning that has no source. The Big Bang could be such a beginning, but then again, some event had to proceed it , even if time itself had this event as its source. As a biochemist I authentically and humbly do not obtain sufficient reason to obtain life from the non-living and so I will to be content, on finding how biochemical events happen. As an existing individual, I believe in God. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dr-daniel-j-guerra/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dr-daniel-j-guerra/support

Valentine’s Day. Beloved by lovers, dreaded by the unpaired; anticipated by retailers, shunned by cynics of commercialism. It doesn’t matter which camp you belong to because this year is different. It’s a covid Valentine year. For lovers looking to celebrate in restaurants or other venues, offerings and seats are limited. For the singles looking to be with friends, unless you’re in the same household or in a pod, gathering is ill-advised. If you’re a business that sells anything vaguely romantic, you’ll probably still get a sales bump and if you are a commercialism cynic like me, it’s a good time to take a break and be happy for once that businesses have this chance to recoup lost sales. My being a Valentine’s day cynic has root cause in a less- than-active dating life during my college years. To combat feeling pathetic about ourselves, my single friends and I formed the Sawing Palad group, which roughly translates to the Unfortunate or Unlucky, defiantly celebrating friendship over romance. Every Valentine’s day during our four years at college, the Sawing Palad would gather for dinner, bring booze back to party at someone’s home, rail against the stupidity of Valentine’s Day, wonder why we were un-loveable, and have a bloody great time doing it. And so I will celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, but not as a lover or someone unpaired (am happily married now), nor a business, since my gigs and in-person cooking classes are suspended, and not as a cynic either, because I’m rooting for the economy, but just because it’s February 14, Valentine’s Day. In a pandemic situation, we should look for any excuse to celebrate. Were there no dates of distinction, the days would rapidly look like any other, especially since many of us now work from home and the lines between work and personal are blurred. Were it not for Valentine ’s Day, this Sunday, would just be another Sunday.Special dates, events (it snowed!) and deeds (paid off car!) are markers of time. It’s a way our minds remember and make sense of personal histories. And when we celebrate these markers, they are imbued with a sparkle of the extraordinary. To celebrate is to express gratitude. When we celebrate, we notice and acknowledge that something is amazing and elevate the positive over the problems and negativity that assail our daily lives. And if we can make celebrations a habit, then we create a habit of gratitude. If you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home, take note of what you plan to do. As we talk more about lifestyle cooking, you’ll see that celebrating often is inherent to our journey. And we’ll want to replicate that as often as possible. For those of you at a loss on exactly what you can do, consider some of these ideas:1. Go for Beauty Our inclination towards beauty is not superficial. Beauty gives us joy and feeds the soul. Whether you’re cooking at home or doing take out; celebrating with a romantic partner, with friends, family or especially if you are alone, a few changes can make the day feel different from other days. And there are many ways to add a bit of beauty to your celebrations, and they need not be expensive. de-clutter and make the dining space pretty. Like many households during the pandemic where many work from home, the dining table now functions as office/study table. In our house, Jeff takes the study and I work in the dining room. It’s too much of a hassle having to move my laptop and paperwork for every meal, so when not in use, they just get covered by a lovely runner.De-cluttering the office/dining tableuse candles, flowers, special vases to dress up the table go on and use the table cloth, china and cutlery you’ve been saving for a special occasion; this is a special occasion!ditch the paper and plastic: use cloth napkins over paper napkins—it’s not only more refined, but better for the environment; and if you’ve still been using paper or plastic cups, perhaps it’s time to invest in proper drinking glasses 2. Bump up the Ambienceget your playlist together. Play music you like when you’re cooking, dining and cleaning up. Music is great for setting the tone whether you’re going for energetic and fun, romantic or soothing. If you have kids, the latter might be great for calming everyone down and to encourage dinner conversation. When washing dishes, I put on Earth Wind and Fire, Devo and B-52’s for a great groove.take a break from the gadgets. Make dinner a gadget-free experience. If you’re used to having phones or tablets on the table during meals, their absence is guaranteed to differentiate this meal from others.play with lighting. Besides the candles, dimmed overhead lights and/or soft incandescent/off-white/yellow lighting from lamps are easy ways to soften up and make a space and everyone in it look more appealing. A normal dinner setting at home (this was Thursday) 3. If you’re cooking, cook the rainbow While the mechanics of how and what to cook is not something we’re covering in this post, you can always improve how a dish looks. Plan to cook with colors. We eat with our eyes, and a visually attractive plate is often colorful. Think of a plate of chicken with gravy (brown) over mashed potatoes (yellow). Now think of the plate of chicken with gravy (brown) over mashed sweet potatoes (orange) with sautéed spinach and blanched almonds (green and beige). If you sprinkled red pepper flakes (red), you’re getting five colors on your plate, an aesthetic ascribed to the Power of Five, Japanese pillars of culinary tradition that not only encourages the use of five colors in meals, but also the five taste groups, and the five senses—touch, smell, sight, sound, taste. This is something we’ll get into more deeply later on, but for now, going for colors in your meal is the easiest thing to do to prettify your plate. And there’s a health benefit to this too. Vibrant colors are the visual cues of pigments that signify beneficial nutrients from plants and animals. The orange in salmon and carrots for example, are carotenoids that are valuable anti-oxidants (the salmon get it from their food). The deep greens in spinach (and your parsley garnish) are from chlorophyll, also associated with anti-oxidant as well as cancer-fighting properties. How to add colors? If you can’t incorporate them in the food themselves, you can always add afterwards with garnishes like parsley, cilantro and chives (green). Brighten up seafood and fried foods with something tart—a wedge of lemon (yellow) or sliced fresh tomatoes (red/orange), which also add great colors to the plate. In Spring and Summer, I often garnish with edible flowers from the garden too. These are a few simple ideas to make this Valentine’s day special--something we can all easily do this weekend to get started on the habit of celebrating. Lifestyle cooking is not only about integrating cooking into our daily lives but also about cultivating gratitude, which doesn’t happen overnight. In a covid year, it’s about finding ways to celebrate life; to find good news despite the overwhelming bad. For Valentine’s Day this year, I’ll be celebrating life and love, and love of life. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and here’s to celebrating well!Author’s note: Share your celebration with us. What did you do that was special this Valentine’s Day? This week, the crew discussed some situations that were starting a new chapter. For instance, Shad “Bow Wow” Moss appears to be the latest rapper to turn his attention to wrestling. The entertainment veteran told his Twitter followers that he hopes to one day jump into the squared circle. 2021 has already seen several wrestling/rap crossovers. Cardi B playfully called out WWE CEO Vince McMahon, Snoop Dogg showed up on AEW’s Dynamite, and Bad Bunny recently became a regular on WWE programming. We're not too sure about this one?? Last June, Quaker Oats, a division of PepsiCo Inc., announced that it would be retiring the Aunt Jemima brand, which featured racist images of Black women. The pancake mix and syrup brand will now be known as the Pearl Milling Company, but the name change isn’t exactly sitting that well with some. The Aunt Jemima brand was first founded in 1889 and hired a former slave to become the product’s front-facing figure, wearing aprons and other stereotypical presentations. A Syracuse, N.Y. woman by the name of Anna Short Harrington played the role of Aunt Jemima from 1935 to 1934 after she was discovered cooking pancakes at the New York State Fair. As its brand ambassador, Harrington traveled the nation while in character, down to cooking pancakes and the whole bit. This should be interesting! Congratulations is in order as The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released its nominee list for the 2021 induction ceremony and it’s loaded with familiar names for Hip-Hop heads. Some of the most notable nominees include Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Mary J. Blige as well Dionne Warwick and Chaka Khan. In order to be eligible, your first commercial album must have been released at least 25 years. First-time nominee Jay-Z’s debut, Reasonable Doubt, dropped in June 1996. This is a long-time coming! In very sad news, Mary Wilson, the co-founder of the legendary Supremes singing group and a Motown Records legend died at the age of 76. As one of the most talented vocalists of her era, Wilson reportedly passed away suddenly on Monday (Feb. 8) according to her publicist and friend, Jay Schwartz. Rest in Paradise! For Valentine’s Day weekend only, BET: Uncut will return to the late night airwaves on the channel for the first time since it went off the air in 2006. Along with a tweet announcing the show’s return, BET included a GIF of Cardi B sharing a three-way kiss with two women from her new "UP" video. BET: Uncut ran for six years and featured raunchy music videos that couldn’t necessarily get clearance to air during the daytime; Nelly’s “Tip Drill” may be the crown-holder. It’ll be interesting to see what BET does with the programming block, considering the fact that any music video and just about any raunchy content are available at the click of a button online. Black GOP candidate for governor wants to end Black History Month, huh!?! Austin Chenge, a U.S. Army veteran of Nigerian descent, is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The next election for governor of Michigan is November 2022. DON'T VOTE FOR THIS GUY!! Drop a comment on your thoughts!

Planned, Prepped, and Productive: Real Food Cooking for Busy Moms
Three Simple Steps To Meal Prep That Tastes GoodThe key to making meal prep taste delicious, fancy, and even gourmet is to plan your meal prep strategically and combine meal prepped foods with fresh foods and storebought foods for the ultimate simple but fresh meal plan.To illustrate this idea, we’ll use my Valentine's Day Menu. For Valentine’s Day I like to bust out my pasta machine for probably the only time I’ll use it in a year, I’ll make a white and red sauce for variety, some roasted broccoli to round out the meal, some crusty bread as an appetizer, and molten chocolate lava cake and ice cream for dessert. My mouth’s watering just thinking about it.To strategize my meal prep, I ask myself the following three questions about the menu I’ve plannedStep 1: What Parts Of This Meal Can I Meal Prep Or Purchase Premade Without Affecting Quality? In this case, I know that the meat sauce can be made a day or two in advance without affecting the quality. In fact, thing like tomato based sauces often taste even better the next day because the flavors have more time to come together.I like to make my own bread , but in this case since it’s not the star of the show and I’m already going to be letting my kiddos get messy in the kitchen with the pasta I’m going to buy bread from my local bakery that will taste delicious.I’m also buying my ice cream, again, making ice cream is fun but in this case I want to focus my energy on other things and storebought ice cream is still delish.Step 2: What Parts Of This Meal Can I Make Partially In Advance Without Affecting Quality? This is the step that takes the most practice. A lot of things can be done partially in advance, but it can take a little trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn’t.I’ll give help you out with this menu though.Pasta dough can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. The batter for the molten chocolate lava cakes can also be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.I don’t want to cook my veggies in advance (I almost never cook veggies in advance)…but I can either buy pre-chopped broccoli or chop it in advance.Step 3: What Parts Of This Meal Will Taste Best Made Entirely Fresh? Some things just shouldn’t be meal prepped if you like enjoying your food. Alfredo sauce could be made in advance, but will taste so much better fresh and it’s quick and easy to make so we’ll make that entirely the day of.We’ll also roll out and boil the pasta the day of so it’s super fresh.Finishing TouchesWhen you prioritize your menu and take strategic shortcuts, your every day and holiday meals will come together quickly and easily. In this case, most of our energy will be put toward rolling out and cooking pasta. We will also reheat the red sauce, make the white sauce, roast the already cut-up broccoli, cut the bread, and bake the molten lava cakes. It sounds like a lot, but it’s so much more manageable when parts are done in advance, and you’ll be shocked at how quickly it all comes together.Want to try this menu out for yourself? Sign up for email updates and get all the recipes for this menu straight to your inbox and try out this meal prep strategy for yourself!I’d love to know, what’s one thing you could do today to make tomorrow’s dinner easier WITHOUT compromising the quality of your food? Tell me in the comments below, soon you’ll be a #mealprepaddict when you see how simple your meal times can become with just a little preparation.
For Valentine’s Day I asked Mark Usewicz from Mermaid’s Garden NYC (https://www.mermaidsgardennyc.com/) to talk to us about their Fish Market and CSA since it seems like the news is all about the Mediterranean diet. I love fish, and caring for sustainable Oceans and water is important to me, and I think it probably is for you too. I’ve got some great videos of my mom making her delicious fish I’ll try to add at the end. Sorry it took so long to get this out there, but I always say the perfect interview happens when just the right listener is in the audience! (http://sGardenNYC.com) Mermaid’s Garden On Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/mgfishnyc/) Check out Mark’s pieces in Martha Stewart (https://www.marthastewart.com/contributor/1526536/mark-usewicz) Tell us a little about yourself, Mark Usewicz. I was trained as a chef restaurant business lived in NYC last thing I wanted to do was open my own restaurant and the next worse thing is open my own business but my wife was in the restaurant business trained as a fish biologist We saw this need for a great fish market in our neighborhood, there really wasn’t anywhere great to buy fish We knew a few fishermen and we built this network started a fish share kind of like a CSA or CSF but we’re not the fisherman Started by connecting our customers with a weekly fish sourced in the Northeast we work with fishermen on Long Island Massachusetts Rhode Island Developed this whole network of aqua-culturists small boat fisherman retail space fish share going retail market all domestic small boat fisherman sourced seafood I grew up in Buffalo, NY so other side of the state a lot of people don’t know where that is in NYC, different vibe different pace I grew up on Long Island and I have sooooo many fond memories of buying fish on the docks from the fisherman in Freeport on Long Island. My mom would cook all the fish from scratch, cut the heads off scale it etc… and then there’s been so much on the news this year about the Mediterranean diet being the best and that’s my mom’s favorite so I thought it would be interesting. So tell us about sustainable fishing So sustainable fishing The methods they are using to catch the fish are sustainable like habitat preservation different kinds of nets they drag along the ocean floor like a steam roller running along the ocean floor so it preserves the ocean floor limit the size of the nets so if they are targeting porgies juveniles It made sense from a preservation to preserve their livelihoods That’s why we focus on these not a lot of young people going into the industry quota getting big How do you think that’s gonna affect you guys? We’re such a small niche the fisherman we work with are able to supply us with a steady supply Hopefully we’re able to keep the oceans nice and healthy Keep a steady supply of sustainable seafood, the US has the best regulated fisheries in the world right now come backs on certain species of fish over the years That’s good to hear, you don’t hear that very often. I know we don’t eat shrimp much because they say farmed fisheries are destructive to people’s livelihoods. destruction of the mangroves source our shrimp from either gulf of Mexico south east off the carolinas Got to work a little bit if you want to find the good stuff but it’s out there Do you want to tell listeners where is your place? we’re in Prospect Heights in Brooklyn not quite downtown Brooklyn 10 minute train ride into Manhattan pretty area Brownstone Brooklyn My very first college I went to was a Pratt Institute. You have all these pickup locations how Support this podcast

For Valentine’s Day, the ABA Banking Journal Podcast digs into trends on U.S. marriage and fertility rates and how they might affect financial institutions. Lyman Stone — an economist who researches demographics and migration at the Institute for Family Studies, American Enterprise Institute and Demographic Intelligence — discusses: How the trend of postponed marriage, with the average adult expecting to spend half as many of their prime childbearing years married compared to 1960, has driven the U.S. to its lowest-ever fertility rate — even as survey research shows that women are having fewer kids than they want. Why reduced childbearing hinders individual Americans’ use of bank products. “Lower odds of getting married and having kids reduces the odds of shifting out of that studio apartment into that starter home,” he says. “These people aren’t going to need mortgages as much and they won’t need them until later in life.” The stark implications for a U.S. economy designed for growth. “How many American families’ balance sheets will make sense if real estate demand in their city is permanently declining?” asks Stone. “Suddenly the calculation on the value of your mortgage looks very different. . . . Population decline rips apart this set of financial instruments that Americans have relied on for generations.” How bankers can connect with their younger customers by demonstrating they care about their well-being. “Perhaps it would be useful for our financial advisers to tell us, ‘The universal consensus of psychological and sociological research suggests that you will be a much happier person, more satisfied with your life, and less likely to die at a young age if you get married and have kids,'” Stone reflects. “At the end of the day, millennials do care about being cared about.” To access a six-minute bonus clip with Lyman Stone on the effects of regional migration on community banks, click here.
