I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.” Disney+ The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Involves a Major New MCU Character James Gunn @JamesGunn In my incredibly subjective & admittedly often odd opinion, we'll be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time. #GotGHolidaySpecial https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1444366802411270159 https://www.cbr.com/guardians-of-the-galaxy-holiday-special-new-mcu-character/ The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a new in-canon adventure that shows the Guardians during the holiday season. Director James Gunn, who helmed the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, will be returning for the roughly 40-minute short, which he says will be required viewing for fans of the franchise. Now, Gunn has expanded on his promotion for the special to reveal that it will also be "introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time." Before the Guardians of the Galaxy take back the spotlight in their special, they'll be tagging along in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is expected to come out on May 6, 2022 and features the remaining Guardians as supporting characters, with Gunn communicating with Waititi to ensure that the characters were handled consistently ahead of their next big screen outing. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives on Disney+ in 2022, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 23, 2023. Inside Marvel's ‘What If…?' Finale, Season 2 Plans and the T'Challa Spinoff That Never Was https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/marvel-what-if-season-1-finale-tchalla-spin-off-chadwick-boseman-1235082366/ “There was planning to have Star Lord T'Challa spin off into his own show,” [Driector Bryan] Andrews tells Variety. “We were all very excited. We know [Chadwick] would have loved it, too.” There's also a brief moment in the finale where we meet an alternate version of Gamora with a sort of space Tony Stark. Will we get to see more of that universe in Season 2? Bradley: That's a definite yes. Basically what happened was we originally had an episode planned for earlier in the season that was a fun, light-hearted, living, breathing Tony Stark-centric episode with Gamora. However, due to the COVID pandemic, one of our animation houses was hit incredibly hard, and the episode needed to be pushed into Season 2, because it would not be finished in time. Given everything that we've all went through over the past two years, pushing an episode of television is absolutely nothing in comparison. And we understood. We hope fans enjoy the ride next year. (2 Part Story) Marvel's What If...? team promises 'resolution' in season finale and teases season 2 https://ew.com/tv/marvels-what-if-season-1-finale-ac-bradley-bryan-andrews/ ...At least we know season 2 is coming since Bradley says that all the episodes of next season have already been written. "Going into the second season, we're sticking with anthology form, and it's going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season," she says. "Hopefully, we'll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If...? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we've got to share the love. I'm very excited to show new worlds, new heroes." Bradley also hints that while many of season 1's episodes featured "big, let's end the world, let's kill everyone" arcs, season 2 episodes will "focus a lot more on the character stories and these heroes and showing a different side of them that people don't expect and hopefully they can relate to." "We're not a show that's designed to set up Avengers 5," she adds. "It's supposed to be just about entertainment and what these heroes mean to us. When I took the job, one of my rules was let's be free. We're in the multiverse — we should be as free as can be and go and run into the wild, into the stories the movies will never do, into the stories the TV shows will never do, and show both Disney and the fans all the possibilities of these characters." What If...? Head Writer Teases Gamora "Prequel" Episode in Season 2 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/what-if-gamora-episode-season-2-prequel-spoilers/ As Bradley explained in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, the episode recounting those versions of Tony and Gamora ended up being delayed due to production problems tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. But as Bradley reassured, that story is coming at some point in the series' second season, as a sort of "prequel" for her appearance in the finale. "We definitely will," Bradley said, when asked if we'll see more of Gamora. "What happened with the Gamora episode, there was originally supposed to be — early on in the season — a Tony and Gamora-centric episode. However, due to COVID and production delays, one of our amazing, amazing animation houses around the globe got hit pretty hard by the pandemic. And we were left with two choices: push the entire season to later this year, or push this one episode to Season 2. We made the choice to push that episode to Season 2, and hoped that seeing Gamora in the finale serves as a teaser for what is to come. In season two, it'll almost be like a little bit of a prequel, we'll see how Tony and Gamora became friends, because those two don't even interact in the main MCU universe." "Given all the upheaval that we've been through in the past two years, pushing an episode is nothing, and we completely understand," Bradley continued. "Our animation houses have been absolute rock stars in pulling off this show." ‘WandaVision' Spinoff Starring Kathryn Hahn in the Works at Disney Plus (EXCLUSIVE) https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/wandavision-spinoff-kathryn-hahn-1235082445/ A “WandaVision” spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn is in development at Disney Plus from Marvel Studios, Variety has learned exclusively from sources. Hahn would reprise the role of Agatha Harkness in the series, which is described by sources as a dark comedy, though exact plot details remain under wraps. “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer would serve as the writer and executive producer on the project. Should the spinoff go forward, it would be the first project Schaeffer has set up with Marvel since she signed an overall deal with them and 20th Television in May. But by this I mean what I would believe is the general understood definition: An official part of MCU continuity. Meaning, an official part of the continuity of the fictional universes which officially comprise the MCU: Earth-199999 and its adjacent universes confirmed as parts of the franchise. (In the case of the shows, the letter is specifically pleading for them to remain as Earth-199999, with the issue of shunting them to another universe addressed.) The Watcher breaks his oath to not interfere with the multiverse. With the help of Supreme Strange, the Watcher assembles a team to save the multiverse from destruction by Ultron. In his infinite wisdom, the Watcher chooses Captain Peggy Carter, Star-Lord T'Challa, Killmonger, Gamora, and Thor. Natasha Romanoff also joins them in the fight against Ultron. The team is eventually able to separate the Infinity Stones from Ultron's body, but Gamora's Infinity Crusher fails to defeat the android. But Black Widow and Captain Carter save the day by uploading Armin Zola's programming into Ultron's body. Zola destroys Ultron, but takes over his armor and the Infinity Stones. Killmonger attempts to steal the armor and stones for himself, but Strange sacrifices his life to hold Zola and Killmonger at bay in a pocket dimension. The Watcher then returns the team to each of their universes and timelines, with Natasha joining a universe in which Black Widow had died. In the mid-credits scene, Black Widow reveals to Captain Carter that Steve Rogers has been found alive inside the long-lost HYDRA Stomper. The WHAT IF...? that's been plaguing everyone's mind - what if Tony never made it to the box-of-scraps-cave - finally answered this week on Marvel Studios' animated Disney+ series, "What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?" And guess what? Eduardo is back, baby! We briefly discuss the plot of Episode 6 of What If this week: In this alternate universe, Tony Stark is never kidnapped by The Rings and, therefore, never becomes Iron Man. Instead, he is rescued by Erik Stevens, a.k.a. Killmonger, a Navy SEAL on a mission in Afghanistan. Upon Tony's return, Killmonger reveals to the world that Obadiah Stane was behind Tony's attempted kidnapping. Out of gratitude and hope, Tony hires Killmonger to replace Stane as the COO of Stark Industries, a decision that makes Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan nervous. Charmed by Killmonger's intellect & manipulations, Tony works with him to create a drone army. When it's clear something is missing, Killmonger suggests they go searching for vibranium to improve the drones. Col. James Rhodes accompanies Killmonger to a meeting with Ulysses Klaw. Klaw & his forces are attacked by T'Challa, Wakanda's Black Panther. Killmonger betrays Rhodey and kills him, revealing that he has been working with Klaw to draw out Killmonger's cousin T'Challa, whom he also murders. Killmonger spins the incident to make Wakanda look like the aggressor, but Tony knows the truth thanks to JARVIS Killmonger then kills Tony before he can reveal the truth, though Pepper continues to be suspicious of the SEAL. General Ross uses the PATRIOT Act to take over Stark Industries, build a drone army, and wage war against Wakanda. Meanwhile, Killmonger brings the Wakandans Klaw's body to paint himself as a hero and the prodigal son returned. He wins the battle with the Stark drones and manipulates everyone, including King T'Chaka, who makes Killmonger the new Black Panther. But Shuri isn't fooled. She travels to New York to formulate a plan with Pepper to reveal the truth. Episode 6 stars Michael B. Jordan, Jeffrey Wright, Chadwick Boseman, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Andy Serkis, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Leslie Bibb, John Kani, Mick Wingert, Beth Hoyt, Kiff VandenHeuvel, and Ozioma Akagha. Shang-Chi earned a total of $34.7 million domestically according to Box Office Mojo in its second box office weekend falling only 54% from it's premiere weekend. Shang-Chi has now earned $144.5M domestically and $259M worldwide. In comparison Black Widow fell 68% in its second box office weekend but benefited from a healthy $60M from Disney+ premiere sales in its premiere weekend. Other Disney second-weekend drops have been varied, with “Jungle Cruise” shedding 55%, “Cruella” 49% and “Free Guy” 35%. Universal's “F9,” another pandemic box office success, opened to $70 million in June and dropped 57% to $30.1 million in its second frame. Pre-pandemic Marvel releases have traditionally held well in their second weekends: “Avengers: Endgame” declined by 59%, “Captain Marvel” by 56%, “Thor: Ragnarok” by 54%, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" by 56%, “Doctor Strange” by 50% and “Ant-Man” by 57%. “Black Panther” enjoyed the most slight second-weekend drop in 2018, with just 45% after opening to a massive $202 million over Presidents Day weekend. The strength of Shang-Chi's Labor Day weekend opening seems to have inspired Disney to commit to debuting its remaining theatrical releases exclusively in theaters for the rest of the year, including Marvel Studios' Eternals. Disney announced that the rest of its domestic release slate for the year will honor a theatrical window ranging from a minimum of 30-45 days per film although the 30 day window only applies to Encanto according to the exclusive reported by Variety. The term “minimum” seems to point to the fact that Disney could extend that 30-45 day window should they prove to be hits and there is an audience to attend in person. Marvel Announces Four Unknown Films Scheduled for 2024 https://collider.com/new-marvel-movies-coming-in-2024/ Walt Disney Studios has updated its upcoming release schedule, which now includes four untitled Marvel films dated for 2024. These include newly announced films scheduled for February 16th, May 3rd, July 26th, and November 8th. Marvel has previously announced all of its movies on the way through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, scheduled for May 5, 2023. After Guardians, there are still three other untitled Marvel films planned for the year, however, the addition of four more unknown Marvel films in 2024 and their release dates is entirely new. Possible films to fill those slots that are currently in development and without a known release schedule include Fantastic Four Deadpool 3 Blade Avengers-Level Team up to end the phase (not confirmed in development) Could be linked to Russo Brothers story from last week Captain America Sequel Possible X-Men MCU – Non-Marvel Studios Sony Won't Send Any Major Blockbusters Directly to Streaming Platforms https://www.cbr.com/sony-no-major-films-to-streaming/ Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra is insisting Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and other blockbusters will retain their theater exclusivity window and not go straight-to-streaming. "There is a higher bar theatrically to get films into theaters so you will probably not see as many films going directly to theaters," Vinciquerra said during a media conference. He conceded that some of Sony's smaller films might not be viable for theatrical release in the current climate but promised, "We have about 12 to 15 major films a year distributed to theaters and will do the same going forward." Vinciquerra pointed out the rise in piracy rates since other studios decided to implement day-and-date streaming releases, labeling it "a big concern" moving forward. The executive noted that Sony is in a unique position as it does not have a streaming service of its own, instead acting as an "arms dealer" in the ongoing streaming wars, able to put its content up for auction. He was quick to clarify, "But you won't see our major films go that way." Sony recently changed the name of its Spider-Man franchise from the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters to Sony's Spider-Man Universe, suggesting it has larger plans for the web-slinger moving forward. With rumors hinting at a live-action Spider-Verse crossover, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home could potentially bridge the gap between Sony's animated and live-action Spider-Man franchises by incorporating Miles Morales. Writer Regrets One Thing About Doctor Strange Episode https://screenrant.com/what-if-doctor-strange-episode-4-writer-regret/ "When you're writing animation, you're writing so far into the future that you can't think four years down the line. That Doctor Strange episode, I wrote in February of 2019. I think I should've called it a Nexus Point instead of an Absolute Point. The Loki scripts weren't even written yet, so that animatic locked before Loki even finished their scripts because you're always writing about two years ahead of animation. It's kind of intense and insane." Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D./Agent Carter Hayley Atwell to Voice Lara Croft in Netflix's ‘Tomb Raider' Anime Series https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/hayley-atwell-anime-tomb-raider-lara-croft-casting-netflix-1235062859/ Hayley Atwell has been cast in Netflix and Legendary Television's upcoming “Tomb Raider” anime series. Atwell will voice the franchise hero, Lara Croft, in the new series based on Square Enix's iconic game. This upcoming series marks the character's anime debut. The story will pick up after the events of the “Tomb Raider” video-game reboot trilogy, charting a new adventure (in new territory) for the globetrotting Lara Croft 25 years after her first game launched. Atwell is best known for portraying Peggy Carter across the Marvel universe, in such films as “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man” And “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as in her own TV series “Marvel's Agent Carter.” Her other live-action credits include “Conviction,” “Criminal U.K.” and “Howards End” for TV and “Brideshead Revisited,” “The Duchess,” “Christopher Robin” and “Blinded by the Light” in film. Up next she can be seen in the highly-anticipated “Mission: Impossible 7” opposite Tom Cruise. Netflix Defenders Rosario Dawson Books A Room In Disney's ‘Haunted Mansion' Movie https://deadline.com/2021/09/rosario-dawson-haunted-mansion-movie-casting-1234828943/ Rosario Dawson has been set to join LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish in Haunted Mansion, Disney's latest live-action film based on one of its theme park attractions. Justin Simien is directing a script from Katie Dippold, and the pic, which also recently added Owen Wilson to the cast, is now gearing up to begin shooting next month. In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guests Eli "The Hero of Tomorrow" Stone, Jim Bevan, and James "Jaimetud" Sullivan discuss about the 2017 direct to DVD animated film Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory based on the 1940 cartoon shorts and the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which is an adaptation of the 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring J.P. Karliak, Lincoln Melcher, Jess Harnell, Sean Schemmel, Mick Wingert, Kate Higgins, Spike Brandt, and Kath Soucie. The movie features Tom and Jerry starving on the streets until a young boy named Charlie Bucket gives them a loaf of bread. To thank Charlie for his kindness, Tom and Jerry decide to get Charlie a Willy Wonka candy bar while a contest is happening where 5 golden tickets are hidden in Willy Wonka candy bars and whoever finds it, gets to go into Willy Wonka's candy factory. Tom and Jerry meet up with Slugworth, Willy Wonka's rival candy maker, Spike, Slugworth's assistant and a truck driver for Willy Wonka's factory, and Tuffy, an Oompa Loompa intern. When the movie premiered, it was bashed by critics and fans calling it an unnecessary adaption that is a copy-paste film of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Tom and Jerry in it as well as its bizarre animation. It was released one year after the passing of Gene Wilder which made the movie more of an insult to fans of the original 1971 adaptation. What do they think of the film? Brooke Knaack is a licensed marriage and family therapist and registered art therapist based in Los Angeles who has over ten years of clinical experience. She currently sees clients at her private practice where she uses cognitive, relational, and somatic techniques to help individuals with developmental trauma or dysfunctional families cultivate healthy boundaries and relationships. Brooke was introduced to the 12-step program of AA in her early twenties and went on to be a very active member for 14 years before she started to question aspects of the organization. Since leaving AA in early 2018, Brooke has expanded her practice to include supporting clients that are transitioning away from controlling systems and learning to trust themselves again. Brooke shares her nuanced view of her experiences while being fully immersed in the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. While the group did help her stay sober, Brooke carefully points out some of the serious flaws and potentially damaging lack of professional oversight inherent in the program. She explains how in retrospect, her new perspective from the point of view of a mental health professional provided clarity on her own experience and allowed her to see the potential risks for certain vulnerable populations. Before You Go: Rachel goes into detail about the importance of safeguards in recovery groups of all kinds and reiterates the idea that these groups can often be both beneficial and counter-productive simultaneously.
