Jason estimated he has recorded around 200 podcasts and this is his favorite. Joe and Jay get real VAULNERABLE here. We are not so different. This episode is an absolute MUST listen. Joe states "From my youth in dairy country, Wyoming County, NY, I have always been aware of the mission of service to others. "Love thy neighbor" was the guiding factor in my journey to college, graduate school and a long career in Clinical Social Work. The specializations of addiction and trauma have been the focus of my vocation for the past 40 years. As a recovering alcoholic and trauma survivor, I strongly empathize with having a brain that, when triggered, seems to have a mind of its own. I worked in Municipal Substance Abuse Counseling Centers in Rockland County, NY for 25 years : in offices, schools and on the streets of an extremely diverse population. My take-away is that our perceived differences can in no way eclipse our sameness as human beings: we all need COMPASSION. My 20 years as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service and my 34 years in private practice (now in Nyack, NY) all echo the same message that resonated in the cornfields of my childhood: We are all one human race - our lives are on loan - our job is to love and care through service - and our Employer creates the results! It is my honor to be a Reps for Responders volunteer, assisting all and any First Responders in need of support." We hope you guys enjoy this powerful episode and know that recovery is possible for anyone. @reps_for_responders @therealjumpmanjay @inside_the_lab_podcast https://repsforresponders.org Youtube: Reps For Responders --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/Inside-The-Laybrinth/support

“Politics are fierce. They are big. When you are trying to move an issue forward, it can be hard. Part of being a good leader, I have learned, is finding allies, how to bring others along to your goal and vision.”This week I sit down with Nancy Wackstein, with Fordham University, to hear about her work history, her lessons learned, and what she is encouraging upcoming leaders to dive into. I would venture to say 2020 has been an unmatched year for leaders everywhere. Politics, racial issues, health problems, topics that may typically be “taboo” have all become frequent topics during Zoom meetings. Nancy shares how she navigated and continues to work through the line of politics and the office place. This episode is timely, concrete and helpful in its guidance around such a touchy subject. I can’t wait for you to check it out. --Humentum sponsors the Lessons from Leaders Podcast. We are filled with gratitude for their partnership. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: The coronavirus had caused people in authority to take measures they’ve never even considered before, like letting lots of folks out of prison. We’ll hear from a district attorney whose allowing 40 percent of his city’s prisoners to ride out the epidemic at home. A Black scholar says Black kids are kicked out of class in obscene numbers because slavery and Jim Crow are alive and well in the nation’s schools. And, we’ll hear how racism was behind the coup that ousted Bolivia’s first Native American president. llinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has promised not to bring any more inmates into his state’s prison system due to the coronavirus epidemic. But Alan Mills, executive director of the Uptown People’s Law Center, says the prisons are already infected, and the state needs to free many more inmates from being trapped in a cage with the disease. Chesa Boudine, the leftish District Attorney for San Francisco, has a personal interest in dramatically reducing the US prison population. His father is a 75 year old prison inmate serving time for his role in the 1981 Brinks armored car robbery – a political heist by white radicals and members of the Black Liberation Army. District Attorney Boudine told National Public Radio’s Terry Gross that he’s reduced the San Francisco jail’s population by 40 percent -- both to fight the Covid-19 epidemic, and because this country puts too many people in jail. Dr. Justin Coles is a professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Education with an emphasis on Urban Education and Critical Race Studies. Dr. Coles co-authored an article on mass suspensions of Black students, a long standing phenomenon that Cole says is a relic of slavery and Jim Crow. Race was the main force behind last year’s coup that overthrew Evo Morales, the elected president of Bolivia, South America’s most heavily indigenous nation. That’s the assessment of Dr. TaTHAgatan RaVINdran, a professor of anthropology and sociology in Colombia who has done extensive research on Bolivia’s Native American majority. Dr. RaVINdran says the United States and multinational corporations also had it in for Morales, but racism is what brought Bolivia’s first Native president down.

The Battle to Compensate Ground Zero First RespondersGuest: Bill Groner, founder &CEO, SSAM Alternative Dispute Resolution, co-author “9/12: The Epic Battle of the Ground Zero Responders”When the World Trade Center's Twin Towers fell to terrorists on September 11, 2001, an army of first responders rushed to Ground Zero. First it was a rescue effort. But for months and months after that –well into the following year –thousands of people worked in and around Ground Zero and at the landfill where debris was dumped and sorted. Construction workers, coroners, fire and police officers. All breathing dust that we now know contained toxic chemicals. In the years that followed, many would develop serious lung illnesses –and even cancers. Finding fake volcanoes and dealing with the real onesGuest: Janine Krippner, PhD., Volcanologist at the Smithsonian Institute Volvanologist Program and host of the Popular Volcanics podcastThere are fewer volcanoes today than there were just a few weeks ago thanks to people like volcanologist Janine Krippner. She works at the Smithsonian and one of her jobs is to sniff out imposters on the official list of volcanoes. Yes, there's an official list. And best beware if you're a volcano-wannabe, cause Krippner has no qualms killing your dream. Is Compassionate Release an Option for Aging Prison Populations?Guest: Tina Maschi, PhD, Associate Professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service in New York City The number of elderly prisoners in the US is going up, and fast. Some projections estimate that by 2030, one third of prisoners will be age 55 and up. As those inmates get older, many will get sick and some will die in prison. Not only does that mean more taxpayer dollars to take care of them, but it also creates a moral dilemma: do you let someone die alone behind bars? President Trump Says Deal with Taliban is Dead. What Next?Guest: Michael Kugelman, Deputy Director and Senior Associate for South Asia, Wilson Center in Washington, DCIt's been 18 years since Al Qaeda's terrorist attacks on US soil. And 18 years since the US struck back in Afghanistan, where the Taliban was giving safe haven to Al Qaeda. That's now America's longest war. But a peace deal between the US and the Taliban had been close at hand. Imminent, we were told. And American troops would be coming home soon. But now? “(The talks) are dead, as far as I'm concerned they're dead,” said President Trump on Monday. “(The Taliban) thought they had to kill people in order to put themselves in a little better negotiating position. When they did that they killed 12 people. One happened to be a great American soldier.” Kenneth Feinberg on Deciding What a Life is WorthGuest: Kenneth Feinberg, Former Special Master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, Author of “What Is Life Worth?” And “Who Gets What?”2,977 people died when terrorists hijacked commercial airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. More than 6,000 others were injured. Just eleven days after the attacks, Congress created a $7 billion fund to compensate those victims and their families. The man tasked with deciding who would get what –how much each life was worth in dollars and cents –was Kenneth Feinberg. Since then, he's overseen victim compensation funds for mass shootings in Aurora, Newtown, Orlando and Las Vegas and for the Boston Marathon Bombing. BP hired him to award compensation to victims of the Gulf Oil spill. He's now handling compensation for victims of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and for the families of people who died in the Boeing 737 plane crashes.

With guest, Author of “Trauma And Transformation: A 12-Step Guide”, Ms. Rivka A. Edery, L.M.S.W. Trauma survivors usually have a difficult time experiencing their vulnerability and the attending to feelings of having once been profoundly helpless and alone. The role of spirituality in trauma recovery is often misunderstood and subsequently minimized. Our guest discusses the resource of spirituality while detailing the complicated puzzle of the survivor’s inner reality. The show will discuss our guest’s step-by-s tep process for applying spiritual tools to each phase of trauma recovery. About The Guest. Rivka Edery, L.M.S.W. is a resident of Brooklyn, New York since 1994, and a native of Montreal, Canada. She has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Social Science and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. She is a highly intuitive and sensitive licensed social worker and a first time author specializing in trauma recovery and spirituality. She has been active in the treatment and recovery field for more than sixteen years. Since 2009, she has been working as a clinical social worker assisting clients who are recovering from trauma-related disorders. She has treated numerous clients and has talked with hundreds of recovering addicts. She is currently employed as a social work supervisor of a large residential drug treatment program. As her career was advancing, Rivka wondered if the ancient spiritual principles of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous can be applied to the healing of trauma. One day, she was suddenly inspired with an idea that had a firm hold on her and has not let go since. It combined the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous that saved her life, with life problems that are a result of surviving traumatic experiences.
