Jim Justice recommended that will use $28.6 million in federal grant funding for economic development at abandoned mine land sites across the state. Administered by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Abandoned Mine Lands and Reclamation, the AMLER program has committed over $233 million in grant funding to assist projects all across the West Virginia coalfields, since 2016. To qualify, the proposed economic development projects must be located on or adjacent to mine sites that ceased operations prior to the signing of the Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act on Aug. 3, 1977. Projects tapped to receive funding include the Clear Fork Rail Trail in Raleigh County, Adventures West Virginia at Adventures on the Gorge in Fayette County, Cranberry Tri-Rivers Rail Trail in Nicholas County and the Landing Strip ATV resort in Wyoming County. A progress report on Pennsylvania's three newest state parks with Parks Director John Hallas

In September of 2022 before leaving office, then Gov. Tom Wolf announced the creation of three new state parks. Susquehanna Riverlands in York County, Big Elk Creek in Chester County and Vosburg Neck in Wyoming County. While these new state parks were quickly opened following the announcement, they have not taken their final form. Before they can be completed – or really before they even start – these parks must go through a rigorous master planning process with numerous phases. There's the planning phase, the design phase, the engineering phase and the construction phase. But in between those phases and additional processes, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources must seek public input, hold public forums and receive feedback from various stakeholders. The opening of the state parks to the public was the easy part. But, now's the hard part. The amount of questions that must be answered and properly addressed can be stagging. Our season finale is meant to let listeners know when the various phases will be complete, what sort of activities and camping options will be available and what the future holds for our three newest parks. And for this large task I wanted to go straight to the source. On this episode, I speak with John Hallas. John is Director of Pennsylvania's Bureau of State Parks.  Be sure to support our 2024 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSupport the showVisit our website to listen to the podcast, download free outdoor kids' activities, learn more about our public lands and to purchase merch. Tomorrow's the date! The WV Gold Rush returns April 1, with even bigger and better prizes. And WVU celebrates the research work of its faculty and students…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY-TV – Nonprofit organization “Restore This Town” is buying the historic Itmann Company Store in Wyoming County, West Virginia and plans to turn it into a tourism hub. Restore This Town Executive Director John Tenhoeve said the restoration will include adding a hotel, restaurant, coffee shop and adventure tour base utilizing the nearby Hatfield-McCoy Trail system and Guyandotte River, but the ultimate goal is to put the company store and community of Itmann back on the map. The building was completed in 1925 and served as the general store and office space, among other things, for the Pocahontas Fuel Company, which founded the Itmann coal camp in 1916.  Once Restore This Town finalizes the purchase later this spring, Tenhoeve and his wife, Cherie, will begin cleaning up the building to get it ready for a complete restoration. Rather than turn the nearly 100-year-old company store into a modern building, Restore This Town plans to turn it into an immersive historic experience with modern amenities. The event, named after the golden rainbow trout, will feature five times the number of chances to win prizes when it returns April 1. “As a lifelong angler, there's nothing that brings me more joy than to announce the return of this incredible event.” Gov. Jim Justice said.  Out of the 50,000 golden rainbow trout stocked during the event, 500 will receive a numbered tag, five times the number of tagged trout in past years. If an angler catches a trout with one of these tags, they can enter the tag number for a chance to win one of five free West Virginia lifetime fishing licenses, a one-night stay at a state park or forest cabin or a $25 West Virginia State Parks gift card. Castle Rock, or The Pinnacle, dominates the upper valley of the Guyandotte River in Pineville, where Pinnacle and Rockcastle creeks converge. Once a favorite picnic spot, the extraordinary rock began to lose its importance as coal mining took center stage in the early 1900s. However, tourism has become a chief economic force in the region, and the castle is gaining attention again, according to Timmy Redden, executive director of the Wyoming County Convention and Visitors Bureau.  He says travelers from abroad, visitors to Twin Falls State Park, and motorists touring the Hatfield-McCoy Trails more frequently visit the rock, which rises behind the county visitor center and overlooks downtown Pineville.  State and local officials are now developing a management plan for the scenic rock and preparing to carefully open views masked by summer foliage. Joe states "From my youth in dairy country, Wyoming County, NY, I have always been aware of the mission of service to others. "Love thy neighbor" was the guiding factor in my journey to college, graduate school and a long career in Clinical Social Work. The specializations of addiction and trauma have been the focus of my vocation for the past 40 years. As a recovering alcoholic and trauma survivor, I strongly empathize with having a brain that, when triggered, seems to have a mind of its own. I worked in Municipal Substance Abuse Counseling Centers in Rockland County, NY for 25 years : in offices, schools and on the streets of an extremely diverse population. My take-away is that our perceived differences can in no way eclipse our sameness as human beings: we all need COMPASSION. My 20 years as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service and my 34 years in private practice (now in Nyack, NY) all echo the same message that resonated in the cornfields of my childhood: We are all one human race - our lives are on loan - our job is to love and care through service - and our Employer creates the results! It is my honor to be a Reps for Responders volunteer, assisting all and any First Responders in need of support." The Erie Canal, which flows between Buffalo and Albany for 363 miles, was completed in 1825 to connect New York City and the Hudson Valley with the Great Lakes. Remnants of the canal, including its toll stations, maintenance buildings, and locks, still exist today, which still yield precious artifacts and, on occasion, some old coins. Isle Royal, an island off the port of Waddington, Lawrence County, situated on the St. Lawrence River County, is where a French commander buried a treasure before surrendering the fort to the British in 1760. The treasure's value is estimated to range between $10,000 to $100,000. Many silver mines in the eighteenth century were once located along Mouat Utsayantha, Schoharie County's region. The Lost Blenheim Silver Mine is found on the northern side of this mountain. The Patriots sealed it off to deter the British from accessing and profiting from it. A landslide occurred soon afterward, concealing it permanently. Silver Creek is situated by Lake Erie, just around eight miles northeast of Dunkirk (County 59). The creek owes its name to the fact that a substantial number of silver coins washed along its beach after intense storms. It is presumed the coins came from the steamer Atlantic, which carried over $60,000 and sunk in the area in 1852. Some wreckage is also visible on Lake Erie's beach, about four miles northeast of Barcelona, County 60, Chautauqua County. If unconfirmed reports are believed, gold and silver coins have been discovered in this same area. The steamer City of Detroit, which was carrying more than $200,000 in gold and silver coins, as well as a substantive cargo of copper ingots, sank here in 1873. Storms and strong currents have washed some of the steamer's remains and cargo ashore. Dean Richard, a steamer ship, sank near Jerusalem Cors' shore on Lake Erie, around ten miles south of Buffalo. A storm destroyed the ship and cast ashore its remains and cargo, which included $191,000 in gold and silver coins, burying them in the beach's sands. Grand Island is located in the middle of the Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. It is said to be the site where an affluent French merchant named Clairieux had some kegs containing eighteenth-century coins buried close to his house and store. The site is also home to several ruins of colonial buildings. A cache of gold and silver coins dating from the sixteenth century was found close to a round stone building's ruins in 1888. It is believed that some French raiders buried around fifteen treasure chests in secret locations on this island during the French and Indian wars. On the Lake Erie shore, east of Port Colborne by about half a mile, in County 58 in Ontario, Canada, considerable amounts of American gold coins have been found, including remains of a wrecked steamship. It is presumed that they are of the Anthony Wayne, a steamer that sank here in 1850 and carried more than $100,000 in gold and silver coins. This site can be reached by heading ten miles due west of Buffalo. Wilbur Rogers' farm, about two miles west of Warsaw Village, State 20A, Wyoming County, is where the present owner's father buried gold coins priced at around $43,000 during the Depression. Montezuma Swamp, situated close to Seneca, County 96, Seneca County, is reported as the site where Loomis outlaw gang buried around $40,000. The Sulphur Spring Treasure is reputed to have been buried close to the ruins of Sulphur Health Resort, between the villages of North Pitcher and Pitcher County 26, Chenango County, by a traveling medicine man circa 1900. Several years ago, some gold coins were discovered in this region; however, they are of recent origin. Some silver coins and chinaware fragments were found on a beach after storms four miles south of Oswego on Lake Ontario, Oswego County, close to S.U.N.Y. College's campus. In 1803, the Lady Washington, a merchant ship, was wrecked here while carrying precious cargo and is presumed the source of th --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/treasure-revealed/support

David Miranda took on the issue of cameras in the court and access by the public and the media in this week's episode of his podcast "Miranda Warnings."The issue came back into the public eye recently with several high profile trials like Kyle Rittenhouse, Derek Chauvin and the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard defamation case. The New York State legislature also took up the issue of New York's law governing cameras in the courts during the legislative session. In March, Senator Brad Holyman introduced  S792A in the New York State Senate to repeal two parts of the judicial law and civil rights law in New York which deal with allowing cameras in New York courts. There is a companion bill in the New York State Assembly. The bills are still in committee in the legislature. If passed, the bills would give widespread access in the trial courts.Currently, some media coverage is allowed at the local and county court level if approved by the presiding judge. Judges often allow coverage of arraignments, opening and closing statements, verdicts and sentencings. Under current New York State law, cameras are not allowed to record testimony.Cameras are allowed at the appellate and court of appeals levels. In those cases there is no testimony, only arguments before a panel of judges. In the podcast, hear a spirited debate between Daniel Novack and Norm Effman.Novack is the Associate General Counsel at book publisher Penguin Random House. He is the Co-chair of the New York State Bar Association Media and Law Committee. He supports wide access for cameras in the courts.Norm Effman is the public defender in Wyoming County and the Executive Director of the Wyoming County Attica Legal Aid Bureau. He is a member of the bar associations criminal justice section and a past member of the NYSBA Executive Committee. He is also a former chair of the mandated representation committee.  Effman believes that there should be restrictions on camera use and that defense counsel should have the right to veto camera use.During the lively conversation both guests discussed issues such as the public access to courts, the right and protections of witnesses and the rights of the accused. The two guests also discussed issue such as implicit bias and holding public officials accountable.

Week fourteen brings in a familiar foe for the Bills. No one player has haunted an organization as much as Tom Brady has to the Bills. He has dashed our hopes and dreams so many times. This week needs to be different. A second loss this late will be tough to overcome. It is not the end of the world, but if there was anyone time to beat Brady, it is this week, and maybe again in the Super Bowl!  The keys on all three phases for the Bills to bounce back and get the train rolling got the playoffs. This week we highlight two organizations in the WNY community. First, Community Action for Wyoming County, specifically the Angel Action Division. This is a prime example of the Bills Mafia having each others back as the folks of this organization support their local community in Wyoming County. Head to https://communityactionforwyomingcounty.com/ to check them out and all that they do. Secondly, coming from a small town myself this hit home. The Perry Center Fire Department is like many other small town Fire Departments who are volunteered based. Your local friends and family are those that show up in your times of need. Talk about Mafia mentality. Sacrafisicng themselves for their local communities is an incredible gesture and should be hihglited. Head over to https://www.chargedline.com/ to check out the history of Perry Fire Center.  This week will be a good test of what we are all about!
