This conversation with Adam Elliott-Cooper revolves around his book, Black Resistance to British Policing (2021). We talk about the colonial genealogy of British policing (in Ireland, Trinidad, Malaya, and Kenya in particular) and the construction of the figure (collective or individual) of the suspect as a legitimization of this policing. We also talk about Black resistance to it, the crucial role of women activists, the paradigm embodied by the 2011 police murder of Mark Duggan and the massive revolts that followed, as well as the possibilities of solidarity.

The C.O.W.S. (Context of White Supremacy) Radio Program welcomes the return of Nairobi Thompson (for the first time). A writer, poet and learning and development specialist, Ms. Thompson is a versatile communicator and facilitator with a rare ability to challenge and entertain professional and artistic audiences. With over 30 years of experience as a learning and development specialist Nairobi's craft began with management and training design for senior leadership, mentoring and coaching. Way back in 2011, during the middle of the London Riots over the police killing of Mark Duggan, Ms. Thompson's former husband Rudy Ebanks spoke with us about the first version of Almost British. After being prohibited from speaking about or promoting her book, her husband picked up the mantle and spoke on a number of platforms about the terrorism Ms. Thompson experienced working for British Prison Service. After more than a decade, Ms. Thompson changed her name, divorced Mr. Ebanks, and re-published Almost British (Re-Visited) to accurately document the years of White Supremacist abuse she endured on the job. (https://www.nairobithompson.co.uk) We are excited to hear directly from her about this extraordinary catalog of White Terrorism on the job. We're also treated to her extraordinary dedication to "ChildQ" - a black British girl who was brutally abused under the pretense that she was smuggling cannabis. #WorkplaceRacism #RuberthaThompson #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

It's exactly ten years since a Black man called Mark Duggan was shot dead by police in north London, setting off five days of rioting and looting across the capital and beyond. So what happened then and what has changed in police-community relations in the last ten years? Dr Matteo Tiratelli, lecturer at the Social Research Institute at UCL tells Bloomberg Westminster's Caroline Hepker and Roger Hearing many of the issues that set off the protests have not been addressed, and it could happen again. Croydon was one of the focuses of the riots, but Gifty Nmaju of Croydon Black and Minority Ethnic Forum says police-community relations have improved there, and, while much of the anger that fueled 2011 remains, there are better ways of dealing with it now. Next, we speak to award-winning author Alex Wheatle MBE. He discusses why he argues Boris Johnson's government is stoking racism and xenophobia among the British public, the prospect of another uprising similar to the one after the killing of Mark Duggan, Boris Johnson calling the use of stop and search ‘loving', arguable impunity for British police officers who kill black people, the history of police brutality against black people in the UK and the backlashes the brutalities have caused, the younger generation's lack of awareness about racism abroad, why Sir Keir Starmer's leadership of the Labour Party has decreased his hope for the future and much more.

Today, they will discuss the Op-Ed they recently co-authored in the Wall Street Journal on a big and hidden tax bill that could be coming for businesses at the worst possible time. Earlier this year, COVID-19 crushed the US economy and caused our unemployment rate to spike from a sixty year low to the worst rate since the Great Depression. Unemployment Insurance – which was significantly expanded in the CARES Act – was a lifeline for millions of workers, but soon businesses could be hit with a big state tax increase to cover the cost. But as you just heard Doctors Duggan and Johnston explain, there are tax policy reforms states could and should embrace to prevent struggling businesses from getting a big tax hit just as they are trying to get back on their feet.Go to NoLabels.org to learn more about how we are bringing together a bipartisan group of public and private leaders working to solve America’s toughest problems.

Mark was so inspired by Wayne's work while in his class that he convinced Wayne to pursue a Ph.D. in economics and maximize his potential for doing better for the world. Although Wayne found his passion and drive outside of the academy, it was the lessons he learned, the skills he gained, and influence from Mark that drove him to be a data-driven activist, organizer, and force for positive change. ASC seminar by Olumide Popoola and Bibi Bakare-Yusuf. For the last seminar of Michaelmas Term, we were joined by author Olumide Popoola and publisher Bibi Bakare-Yusuf for an interview with Olly Owen on Popoola's new book, 'When We Speak of Nothing' and the bigger vision of Cassava Republic Press, a Nigerian publishing house which aims to generate the 'African archival future.' Book abstract: Best mates Karl and Abu are both 17 and live near Kings Cross. It’s 2011 and racial tensions are set to explode across London. Abu is infatuated with gorgeous classmate Nalini but dares not speak to her. Meanwhile, Karl is the target of the local ‘wannabe’ thugs just for being different. When Karl finds out his father lives in Nigeria, he decides that Port Harcourt is the best place to escape the sound and fury of London, and connect with a Dad he’s never known. Rejected on arrival, Karl befriends Nakale, an activist who wants to expose the ecocide in the Niger Delta to the world. Increasingly distant from happenings in London, Karl falls headlong for Nakale’s feisty cousin, Janoma.Meanwhile, the murder of Mark Duggan triggers a full-scale riot in London. Abu finds himself caught up in its midst, leading to a tragedy that forces Karl to race back home. When We Speak of Nothing launches a powerful new talent. The stream of consciousness prose, peppered with contemporary slang, captures what it means to be young, black and queer in London. If grime music were a novel, it would be this.

From the Hillsborough Inquest to Plebgate, from the revelations about undercover officers to the shooting of Mark Duggan, the last few years have been as controversial as any in the history of British policing. The government has introduced a range of new measures to try and make the police service more accountable. These have included the strengthening of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, measures to crack down on officers retiring when under investigation, and a new openness surrounding police disciplinary hearings. But have these new ideas really worked or is there, as some claim, real resistance to accountability? File on 4 investigates a series of cases of alleged wrongdoing brought against the police by both members of the public and by serving officers. We look at some of the tactics police forces still appear to be using to avoid scrutiny, and we ask : despite the new measures, how much has really changed? This program is specifically constructed to encourage participation from Victims of Racism beyond the United States and/or non-white people who are not able to join the dialog during our typical broadcast time. Like everything else, the holiday season supports the System of Racism. Dutch journalist and political candidate Sylvia Simons was Racially Terrorized for critiquing the White Supremacist tradition of Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). Simon's face was "super-imposed on the hanged bodies of victims of a lynching." Whites in England broadcast a BBC documentary on what some would describe as the 2011 lynching of Mark Duggan by Metropolitan Police. The project obscured the centrality of White Supremacy in Duggan's death and the ensuing coverage of the killing as well as the days of "rioting." Black Is The New Black, a four-part series also aired on the BBC, features Thandie Newton, Naomi Campbell, Dizzee Rascal, Alesha Dixon and some of the most recognizable, most accomplished black Britons alive. Refreshingly, many of these black celebrities spoke candidly, courageously about how they have been humiliated and brutalized by White Supremacists. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE: 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS As predictable as mosquitos and sun burned Whites in August, the police killing of a black male, Sylville Smith, provoked days of unrest and destruction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Seeing as this month is the 4th anniversary of the police killing of Mark Duggan and the subsequent "London Riots" as well as the Marikana mining massacre in South Africa, no one should be bewildered by these routine disturbances. Another recurring theme on the global plantation is White liars. US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is suspected of fabricating a grizzly tale where he and three other athletes were robbed at gun point in Brazil. Video footage of the alleged mugging has been released; however, Lochte has still garnered a high level of sympathy and support. Conversely, film maker Nate Parker, who's feature-length film on counter-terrorist Nat Turner is slated to be released later this year, has been badgered by allegations that he raped a White Woman while attending Penn State University. Parker was tried and acquitted for this sexual assault nearly 20 years ago, but this hasn't stopped a campaign to boycott his film and impale his career. #RacismIsNotAPrivilege INVEST in The COWS - paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Police forces across the UK have been the subject of a growing list of scandals over the past decades. Critics of the police point to events such as Hillsborough and the killing of Mark Duggan amongst others as an example of institutional racism and incompetence. However, supporters of the force argue that the police is improving and state it and the officers who work hard for it to protect the citizens of the UK everyday. Some argue that the problems within the police simply reflect divisions and prejudices within society and are not particular to the force itself. Mark Duggan Investigation

When Mark Duggan was shot by armed police in Tottenham, north London on 4th August 2011, the Independent Police Complaints Commission immediately began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. It is normal procedure for the IPCC to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of any fatal shooting by the police. At the time, IPCC Commissioner, Rachel Cerfontyne, said: "I will make certain that this investigation is thorough and answers the many questions that everyone has when such an incident occurs." Yet there is now the real possibility that a full inquest conducted openly and before a jury, will never be held into the shooting which triggered rioting in Tottenham, and which later spread across London and other English cities. Simon Cox speaks to people close to Mark Duggan about what impact this news is having in the community. He investigates whether the IPCC have the statutory powers they need in order to do their job properly. And, after the IPCC stated that their hands may well be 'tied' by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, Simon will ask whether it is time for a change in the law which currently prevents phone intercept evidence being heard in court. Producers: Hannah Barnes and Mike Wendling.

England has witnessed its worst rioting for a generation this month. The majority have been shocked by scenes of people, some as young as 11, looting high street shops with seemingly no fear of being caught by the police or of any punishment that could be handed out by the courts. The violence started in Tottenham, North London, where what started out as a peaceful protest over the shooting of 29 year old Mark Duggan, spiralled out of control. Two days after Mr Duggan had been killed by armed officers, his friends and family gathered outside Tottenham police station asking for more information on the circumstances surrounding his death. Five hours later, trouble ensued. Police cars were set on fire; shops were destroyed along the length and breadth of Tottenham High Road; and families were forced to flee their homes as the flames spread. Later that night, just a mile or so away in Tottenham Hale, the looting began. The Report investigates what happened on that fateful Saturday - August 6th 2011 - in Tottenham and asks why the situation grew so violent. Wesley Stephenson speaks with people who were on Tottenham High Road when the violence broke out. He reveals deep-seated anger at the police within some sections of the community and hears claims that the police response was not robust enough. Producer: Hannah Barnes.

London is burning. So far, 525 people have been arrested, 44 police officers have been injured and one man is dead. Untold buildings have burned to cinders while streets have been trashed and overrun by demonstrators. The mainstream media is covering every last detail of the crisis that erupted after the police shooting death of Mark Duggan, a local resident of Tottenham. News agencies are investigating every nuance of the story; except, of course, why it is actually happening. Politicians have begun posturing and making public statements; pointing fingers and drawing lines between the supposed lawful and the lawless; the decent and the depraved.  And of course they are targeting anyone but themselves and anything but their policies that have left young men disenfranchised and disaffected. The havoc continues, and tonight on AVfM Radio hosts Paul Elam and JtO will make easy work of a simple issue: Why young men get angry when police gun them down in the street.
