The Irishman is, arguably, the last great mob movie. Directed by Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Killers of the Flower Moon) and features a huge ensemble cast including Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, A Bronx Tale), Joe Pesci (Casino, Goodfellas, Home Alone), Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The Piano), Anna Paquin (X-Men, True Blood, The Piano), Stephen Graham (This Is England, Snatch, Boiling Point) and many more. It also stars Al Pacino in his first ever team-up with Scorsese. Something film fans have been waiting years for. Based on the memoir of Frank Sheeran, a mob enforcer who became friends with legendary teamster Jimmy Hoffa.Film Critic Brian Tallerico, managing editor of rogerebert.com, joins the podcast to discuss this crime film. Brian explains the history of Hoffa and how it fits into his life, what this film means when it comes to Scorsese's output and why Pacino's performance is quite understated in the film. Brian also asks an interesting question about role reversals. All About Al: The Pacino Podcast is written, produced and presented by Mark Searby. Hosted on Acast. When Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa headed to a "meeting" in July of 1975 with two leaders of the local underworld he had no idea the betrayal he probably encountered. While this is the 49th year of his disappearance the most likely scenario is that his best friend ended his life in some misguided decision of loyalty. Frank Sheeran's death bed confession in his biography "I Hear You Paint Houses," was startling and is the mostly likely scenario. The biography was the source material for Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman." Hear the story in this weeks episode.

Happy 300th Flixwatcher! In this special birthday episode Sam Pay and Martin Zaltz Austwick from Song by Song join Flixwatcher to review Helen's choice The Irishman. The Irishman is a 2019 Martin Scorsese film, based on the non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, it tells the story of Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran a truck driver who becomes a hitman for the mob. Robert De Niro stars as Frank Sheeran, Joe Pesci stars as Russell Bufalino, the crime boss of the Bufalino mafia and counsel to Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino. Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham and Harvey Keitel also star in supporting roles. The Irishman is notable for its 209 minute runtime - three hours and 29 minutes of mob violence and International Brotherhood of Teamsters - labour unions in the US. Recommendability for The Irishman was mixed, despite general consensus that is it a very interesting film, the three hour plus runtime goes against it. Unsurprisingly the repeat viewing scores very quite low and overall The Irishman scores 3.36. Enjoyed Sam and Martin as hosts? Check out past episodes The Drunken Master and The Nice Guys. “Associate – An associate is not a member of the Mafia, but works for a crime family nonetheless. Associates can include a wide range of people who work for the family. An associate can have a wide range of duties, from virtually carrying out the same duties as a soldier to being a simple errand boy. This is where prospective mobsters ("connected guys") start out to prove their worth. Once a crime family is accepting new members, the best associates of Italian descent are evaluated and picked to become soldiers. An associate can also be a criminal who serves as a go-between in criminal transactions or sometimes deals in drugs to keep police attention off the actual members, or they can simply be people the family does business with (restaurant owners, etc.) In other cases, an associate might be a corrupt labor union delegate or businessman.[66] Non-Italians will never go any further than this, although many non-Italian associates of the Mafia, such as Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, Murray Humphreys, Mickey Cohen, Frank Rosenthal, Gus Alex, Bumpy Johnson, Frank Sheeran, Jimmy Hoffa, Jake Guzik, Gerard Ouimette, and James Burke, wielded extreme power within their respective crime families and carried the respect of actual Mafia members. Soldier (Soldato in Italian) – A soldato or “soldier” is an inducted (or “made”) member of the Mafia in general and an inducted member of a particular Mafia crime family, and traditionally they can only be of full Italian background (although today many families require men to be of only half Italian descent, on their father's side). Once a member is made he is untouchable, meaning permission from a soldier's boss must be given before he is murdered. When the books are open, meaning that a family is accepting new members, a made man may recommend an up-and-coming associate to be a new soldier. Soldiers are the main workers of the family, usually committing crimes like assault, murder, extortion, intimidation, etc. In return, they are given profitable rackets to run by their superiors and have full access to their family's connections and power. Consigliere – The consigliere is an advisor to the family and sometimes seen as the boss's "right-hand man". He is used as a mediator of disputes and often acts as a representative or aide for the family in meetings with other families, rival criminal organizations, and important business associates. In practice, the consigliere is normally the third-ranking member of the administration of a family and was traditionally a senior member carrying the utmost respect of the family and deeply familiar with the inner-workings of the organization. A boss will often appoint a trusted close friend or personal advisor as his official consigliere. Caporegime (or capo) – A caporegime (also captain or skipper) is in charge of a crew, a group of soldiers who report directly to him. Each crew usually contains 10–20 soldiers and many more associates. A capo is appointed by the boss and reports to him or the underboss. A captain gives a percentage of his (and his underlings') earnings to the boss and is also responsible for any tasks assigned, including murder. In labor racketeering, it is usually a capo who controls the infiltration of union locals. If a capo becomes powerful enough, he can sometimes wield more power than some of his superiors. In cases like Anthony Corallo they might even bypass the normal Mafia structure and lead the family when the boss dies.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

In 1975, the notoriously corrupt union leader Jimmy Hoffa vanished without a trace. Due to his various dirty dealings, the FBI assumed it was a mob hit but could never find evidence to back it up. For decades it seemed the question "Who got Hoffa?" would never be answered — until 1999, when Hoffa's old right-hand man, Frank Sheeran, begins confessing on his deathbed... This week we discuss two critically acclaimed mafia films from one of cinema's greats, Martin Scorsese. The first is The Irishman (2019), starring Robert De Niro, as mob hitman Frank Sheeran, and Al Pacino, as teamster president Jimmy Hoffa. The film, the budget of which allegedly spiralled to around the $250 million mark, was eventually acquired by Netflix and earned 10 Oscar nominations. The second is Casino (1995), starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as Vegas mob men. This film, which was based on the real-life exploits of Lefty Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro, was somewhat overshadowed by another Scorsese mafia film released only a few years earlier, Goodfellas. Men Aristoteles ser förstås problem.

For some of the real story, and for a great American tale in itself, you want to go to Jack Goldsmith’s book, In Hoffa’s Shadow.” —Peggy Noonan, The Wall Street Journal"In Hoffa’s Shadow is compulsively readable, deeply affecting, and truly groundbreaking in its re-examination of the Hoffa case . . . a monumental achievement." —James Rosen, The Wall Street JournalAs a young man, Jack Goldsmith revered his stepfather, longtime Jimmy Hoffa associate Chuckie O’Brien. But as he grew older and pursued a career in law and government, he came to doubt and distance himself from the man long suspected by the FBI of perpetrating Hoffa’s disappearance on behalf of the mob. It was only years later, when Goldsmith was serving as assistant attorney general in the George W. Bush administration and questioning its misuse of surveillance and other powers, that he began to reconsider his stepfather, and to understand Hoffa’s true legacy. In Hoffa’s Shadow tells the moving story of how Goldsmith reunited with the stepfather he’d disowned and then set out to unravel one of the twentieth century’s most persistent mysteries and Chuckie’s role in it. Along the way, Goldsmith explores Hoffa’s rise and fall and why the golden age of blue-collar America came to an end, while also casting new light on the century-old surveillance state, the architects of Hoffa’s disappearance, and the heartrending complexities of love and loyalty. Martin Scorsese dissed Marvel films last year. Dissed them hard. Luckily for him, as much as I am a ride-or-die MCU fan, I’m also professional AF, so I was able to put my personal feelings to one side when discussing his new pile of bullshit, The Irishman. • Telling the story of a professional hitman, the film covers decades in the life of Frank Sheeran, utilizing top notch de-aging technology to allow Robert De Niro to play him at all ages. The technology is also used in a lot of Marvel films, and used a lot better IMO, but that’s neither here nor there. • It’s been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. But is it any good? • To help me decide, I enlisted the help of a woman who is allergic to films over two and a half hours, Tiffany B, to chat about Hulk Hogan, riding feminist horses so long you get saddle sore, and challenging Robert de Niro to a fist fight. • There's a spoiler-free section, followed by a spoiler-filled, so if you've seen the film or not, there's something for you to listen to! • Cheers!
Armed with a newfound sense of vigour and purpose, we storm into 2020 with the first Required Reading for over a year. Let’s not dwell on the reasons for our absence and instead celebrate the fact that one our greatest living directors has reunited with some our greatest living actors to add tremendous weight to the argument for streaming services being a legitimate platform for fantastic films. The Irishman, ironically, marks the start of a new era for RR with what’s very much an end-of-an-era epic. Based on the non-fiction work I Heard You Paint Houses, it follows the life of mob hitman Frank Sheeran, widely thought to be the man responsible for Jimmy Hoffa’s demise (although you can’t prove nuthin’, ya hear me?). Did the latest, possibly final Scorsese/De Niro pairing earn the highest RR accolade, the incredibly prestigious McCartney? Only one way to find out. Also: Dan’s first ever quiz and more VoD recommendations than is really necessary.

It's 2020 Folks. The Future Is Now! So what better way to start the new year than take a look back a few decades at a time where the Mafia was more relevant and in power than any other time. The Irishman and Uncut Gems take a look at two different men who found their selves and what we would see as a less than desirable circumstances. In the Irishman we follow Frank Sheeran, played by De Niro, a truck driver who found him self quickly mixed up with mobster Russell Bufalino, played by Joe Pesci, who came out of retirement mind you to only do this film. all leading up to the disappearance of teamster leader and mob affiliate Jimmy Hoffa played by the, "WHO AH" man himself, the great Al Pacino. Uncut Gems on the other hand takes place in current day and follows Howard Ratner played by Adam Sandler. Now you may be thinking wait the guy who does the funny voices and did ridiculous comedies by in the the 90's and earily 2000's? Yes, one in the same. Only this is perhaps the best thing Sandler has ever done. Howard Ratner is a Jewelry dealer In the diamond district of New York City and a gambling problem that what would put even Charles Barkley to shame. Howard buys this rare gem online one day. only to ignite a chain of one horrible choice after another. If you haven't seen this one yet we would strongly encourage it. Now we come to Underwater. We admit its such a weird combo of movies to put together. Underwater is worth talking about but we just couldn't see us giving it a full episode all its own. That being said. Underwater is worth seeing for sure! Kristen Stewart did a phenomenal job as well did the rest of the cast. if your a fan of the Abyss and Sphere then this is right up your ally. To end the episode we talk politics and the risk of WW3 while joking a lot of the time, this might be the longest ever segment on politics we've ever had on the show. "It was a bad hit." In Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, Frank Sheeran tells us that Sally Buggs was killed by the mob for speaking to the FBI without informing the mafia, only to find he did in fact tell someone that he was having a meeting with the feds but that person forgot to pass the message on. But is this really true? Could it be that Buggs was indeed talking to the feds, and was it in fact because of him that the likes of Russell Bufalino, Frank Sheeran and Anthony Provenzano were all sent to prison? Earlier this week, the Fox News Rundown covered the Catholic Church's sexual abuse crisis and how new state laws could force the institution to payout billions of dollars to victims. We spoke to Jonathan Morris, who is a theologian and a former Catholic Priest, about the future of the Church and how it has responded to thousands of allegations of abuse. If you heard Monday's segment, the Fox News contributor offered both an honest and compassionate perspective on this complex topic. What you did not hear was the other part of the conversation. It turns out Jonathan Morris has a role in one of the year's most discussed and critically acclaimed films, “The Irishman”. The drama directed by Martin Scorsese starring Robert De Niro tells the story of mobster Frank Sheeran who claimed to have murdered Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa. Morris appears in multiples scenes with De Niro playing … a priest. On The Fox News Rundown Extra, you'll hear host Jessica Rosenthal's full conversation with Jonathan Morris that includes him sharing his experience working on the set of “The Irishman”. Morris told Rosenthal how he got the role and what it was like working with two cinema legends Scorsese and De Niro. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The 1975 disappearance of Teamsters labor leader Jimmy Hoffa is one of our country's most famous unsolved mysteries. FOX News Channel Correspondent Eric Shawn has been investigating Hoffa's death for two decades. Fox Nation will be releasing a second season of “Riddle: The Search for James R. Hoffa”, a docuseries based on Shawn's quest to find the truth.
