“It's important to look at the upside of failures,” says Denise Baca, VP of Wholesale (North America) at G-Star RAW, interviewed by fellow co-lab member, Bianca Kofman. Originally from Mexico, Denise and her family moved to Texas when she was 5 years old. She attended Baylor University, where she studied Finance and International Business. During a college internship in Dallas, she became acquainted and interested with the Neiman Marcus HQ through friends who worked there. Upon college graduation, she was accepted into Neiman's executive program, ultimately becoming an Assistant Buyer and getting her start in the fashion industry. After five years at Neiman's, she took the leap to NYC and has held various VP and Director roles - focused on retail, sales and wholesale - for a bevy of amazing brands, including Gucci, Miu Miu and Prada. Training across New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Tokyo, Brazil, regional Australia, and her purple bedroom, Vanessa Marian Varghese is particularly fascinated with street dance and the way it is born outside of the dance studio context. In 2016 Vanessa founded Groove Therapy, aimed at making dance accessible to all walks of life. The program has brought dance to at-risk youth, Indigenous communities, dementia sufferers, refugee girls and the every-day person, using the political and healing foundations that these street dance styles are built upon and mindfully appropriating it in new communities to help spark global conversation and cultural understanding. As a dance professional, her other credits include an Adidas sponsorship and movement direction for Victorias secret, nike, Bonds, G-Star Raw and MTV. However, at the base of it all, dance for her has always been a way of finding more mental well-being. Daniel Popper is a multidisciplinary artist known globally for his larger-than-life sculptures, and spectacular public art installations. From Cape Town, South Africa, Daniel has travelled the globe creating an array of sculptures , installations and stages. Daniel specialises in Interactive art, Public art , stage design, installation art, and interior design. Daniel is most acclaimed for his massive public art installations at top festivals like the Electric Forest festival in the USA, Boom Festival in Portugal, Rainbow Serpent festival in Australia, as well as Afrikaburn in the Tankwa Karoo in South Africa. Many of his projects include collaborations with other artists, technicians and artisans to incorporate electronic music, LED lighting and projection mapping as key components. Daniel creates both temporary and permanent work in public spaces. Many companies have commissioned Daniel to create unique installations to promote their brands. He has an interest in making a statement with his artworks, and creating never-seen-before innovations. Many of his projects blur the lines between art, sculpture and brand activation. In 2010, he created 14 giant Pop Puppets for MTN that captured thousands of fans at the official Fifa Fan Parks. In 2011, he produced a life-size baobab tree for Siemens which was erected at COP17 and lit up by bicycle generators. In a second project for Siemens, Daniel was commissioned to build a sculpture that would stand as a defining feature for the Nelson Mandela School of Science and Technology. He created the 14 meter high Tree of Wisdom out of galvanised steel with a granite base .The tree is a permanent installation that has become an integral part of the landscape architecture of the school. He has worked for a wide range of brands including Baby Soft, G-Star Raw, The opening ceremony for the Africa Cup of Nations as well as a high end night club in Cape Town. Daniel founded a production company “Pop Productions” which currently focuses on creative concept design, innovative advertising, brand activation, decor planning and fabrication, stage design and fabrication, interior design, spacial planning,lighting solutions and sculpture, both temporary and permanent. We talk about London as a creative city, the balance between his work as a graphic designer, illustrator and live artist and where he'd like to head. Chris Bowlby looks at the 22-year old Norwegian chess player Magnus Carlsen. He has the highest rating in the world ever and has been called the Mozart of chess.He is currently in London playing the tournament that will determine which top player gets to challenge the reigning world champion, Vishy Anand, for that title. Carlsen has been amazing the world of chess since he was a child. He became a Grandmaster after just four years of playing, when he was thirteen. He also achieved a draw against chess legend Gary Kasparov at that age. His talent and achievements later caught the attention of the fashion world, and he was asked to model for denim brand G-Star Raw, giving the image of chess a make-over in the process. He is said to have a photographic memory, but uses it to remember sports results and trivia more than chess openings. An instinctive and fast player, he also has extraordinary staying power and can change a game five hours in, when his opponents start to flag. Can this chess wunderkind now become world champion? And what is he actually like? Lesley Curwen talks to those who know him best, from his dad and his first coach, to famous chess players like Nigel Short.Producer: Arlene Gregorius.
