Busiswa, DJ Lag, Karen Nyame KG and Scratchclart talk about the impact of the pandemic on amapiano and gqom, what it was like getting back to the clubs when things opened up again, and the global rise in popularity of these genres. Busiswa is a singer and poet from South Africa. Her music career began when she featured on Sir Bubzin's track Syaphambana in 2011, and she's since gone on to feature on DJ Zinhle's global hit My Name Is, as well as Beyonce's My Power as part of The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack. She's released three studio albums, and her most recent single Lagos came out late last year. DJ Lag is a prolific DJ and record producer who is widely recognized as the king of gqom music, a genre of electronic dance music from Durban in South Africa. His bass-heavy, minimalist sound has pushed him into the upper ranks of the global electronic music scene, and last year he released his debut full-length album, Meeting with the King. Karen Nyame KG is a producer, DJ and broadcaster who has been one of dance music's true innovators of the last decade. She's been dubbed the Goddess of Rhythm, and is known for her energetic, polyrhythmic sound that is lighting up the clubs of London and beyond. Scratchclart is an electronic musician, DJ and record producer who is part of the fabric of grime music and UK funky. He's the head of the highly respected DVA Music label, and in recent years he's been building bridges between music scenes in the UK and South Africa, in particular with his DRMTRK series and his new EP Beyond Gqom & Grime.
Our latest Wild City mix comes from Durban's quintessential Gqom icon DJ Lag who uses it to commemorate his first tour across India in February as part of Ultra SoulFlyp. Born in Clermont, Lwazi Asanda Gwala aka DJ Lag is regarded as one of the earliest artists to popularise the thumping visceral sound of Gqom, a genre born out of South African variations of house music, across the peninsula and then to the world. With early works uniquely released over WhatsApp to get youth across the nation to dance to them, Lag counts collaborations with the likes of Beyonce among his career highlights besides being a genre pioneer and a flagbearer of the sounds coming out of South Africa. His Wild City carries the same qualities that define him as a producer: hard-hitting with an impeccable sense of building tension before a gratifying release all through an intricate control of the low-end. With tracks ranging from his own collaborations and his contemporaries, the mix highlights an emergent version of gqom which subtly shares influences with genres like amapiano. The latest music craze to hit South African dance floors is a dark, pulsating and energetic sound called gqom. For the past seven years, a young and technologically skilled generation in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, has created and finessed a sound that has the world hooked and wanting more. It is an entire cultural movement complete with distinctive dance moves and styles. We talk to some of the deejays and young producers of this genre, like DJ Lag, Citizen Boy and Distruction Boyz, as well as Gqom Oh! record label owner Francesco Nan Kolè to understand where gqom originated, how it's made and where it's going. DJ Lag is frequently described as a gqom pioneer – helping shape and usher the drum-heavy sound to the forefront of South Africa's dance music scene. Always looking to break new ground, his latest album employs a broader palette fusing amapiano, Afro-house, and Afro-tech – and slowing down a few tracks that he's seeing as a bit of shift in the genre, calling it gqom 2.0. From hearing his music in a taxi for the first time, to that first trip up to Johannesburg, to touring the world, DJ Lag seems to have taken it all in his stride, one giant leap at a time. If gqom has a CEO, it's probably DJ Lag. The South African artist has found enormous success since teaching himself to produce and DJ as a teenager in Durban, to the point that he famously worked with Beyoncé on the Lion King soundtrack. His style of gqom, a heaving, powerful type of club music, has become sleek and often catchy, growing from classic tracks like "Ice Drop" into thrilling hybrids like "Lucifer," his collaboration with amapiano artist Lady Du. Like so much dance music around the world at this point, DJ Lag's newest productions are informed by the red-hot, ultra-suave sound of amapiano, another South African-born genre. His long-awaited debut album, Meeting With The King, features plenty of flirtations with amapiano and house styles, working with some of South Africa's most talented artists and coming up with a sound he's christened Gqom 2.0. Gqom ' is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 2010s from Durban, South Africa, pioneered largely by producer DJ Lag, Rudeboyz, Griffit Vigo, Dominowe and Citizen Boy. It was developed from kwaito, a subgenre of house music from South Africa.

We're rewinding back to the beginning of summer again for our fifth installment from the booth. This time it's the one and only Total Freedom on the ones, twos, threes and fours. He took over from DJ Lag at 3am that night and was shelling out smoldering deep house and rave-ready, diva-dancehall anthems before flipping the script with a barrage of berserk and euphoric jungle explosives as the sun came up. Maximum thanks to Ashland for letting us push this out and big love to Daniel "Physical Therapy" Fisher for his help in putting this night together back in June. Gqom är baksmällan i ett Sydafrika som inte lyckades leva upp till drömmarna. Gqom är eskapismen som spridits med hjälp av taxichaufförer, meddelandeappar och viga danslag. Träffa en av genreskaparna, DJ Lag, som 15 år gammal la grunderna till ett pulserande mörker. Antihjälten Danny Brown klev ur den krisande manligheten med en rå syn på ämnen som sex och fattigdom, samt med en lekfull inställning till kön och identitet. Danny gjorde upp med sitt eget och Detroits förflutna, och såg bortom de breda boulevarderna som liknade sönderslitna motorvägar. Nu har han levererat karriärmilstolpen "uknowhatimsayin¿". Recording number three comes from back in early June, when resident DJ Physical Therapy got things going before DJ Lag and Total Freedom turned the place upside down and inside out. The importance of the opening slot in the arc of a good party is often overlooked but like the pro that he is, the Allergy Season boss veered toward the outer edges of his record collection for tempos, textures and grooves that would set the stage for what was coming afterward. The result is a warm, thoughtfully strung together mix of soupy digi-dub, street-wise downtempo dnb and sprightly, colorful dancehall. First breaking out at the G-Star Raw x Boiler Room Sessions in Johannesburg and the 2016 Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, South Africa's unstoppable DJ Lag makes his Egg LDN debut bringing his Gqom sound to head up the Night Slugs ‘Hardbody' party on Friday August 16th. Enjoying huge props currently for his ‘My Power' track on Beyonce's ‘Lion King:The Gift' album, this Gqom sound pioneer has taken the global stage by storm over the last 3 years. Still only in his early 20's, DJ Lag has racked up sets at Poland's Unsound Festival, Seoul's Cake Shop, Afropunk NYC and has circled the world twice over with his #GqomIsThePresent Tour. The latest music craze to hit South African dance floors is a dark, pulsating and energetic sound called gqom. For the past seven years, a young and technologically skilled generation in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, has created and finessed a sound that has the world hooked and wanting more. It is an entire cultural movement complete with distinctive dance moves and styles. We talk to some of the deejays and young producers of this genre, like DJ Lag, Citizen Boy and Distruction Boyz, as well as Gqom Oh! record label owner Francesco Nan Kolè to understand where gqom originated, how it’s made and where it’s going. Ett överskott på bas, och en länk till Sydafrikas första innovativa moderna dansmusik Kwaito. Kwaito växte ur frihetskampen under apartheid, och frihetskänslan efter decennier av djävulskt förtryck. Utmynnade i ett musikaliskt glädjerus. Gqom är baksmällan i ett Sydafrika som inte lyckades leva upp till drömmarna. Gqom är eskapismen som spridits med hjälp av taxichaufförer, meddelandeappar och viga danslag. Möt en av genreskaparna DJ Lag som 15-år gammal la grunderna till ett pulserande mörker.
