Send us a textHow are you this week? Have you been seeing more places, spaces, where two opposing forces or states of being intersect? Have you witnessed the magic in those juicy spaces? If you're nodding yes, has the supernatural winked at you? Given you more overt breadcrumbs? This morning as I ran, I watched the clouds move across the sky, one in particular was shaped like a pyramid. It then morphed into a shark. Is cloud scrying a thing? Certain shapes, designs, patterns, images evoke a deep knowing in me, remind me of my connection to everything else. A spiral, for example. It calls to mind a whirlpool, a vortex of energy, a portal. Hear about travel to Queensland's Gold Coast as the Amateur Traveler talks to Leanne and Lyle from BeachTravelWine.com about one of their favorite beach destinations. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-queenslands-gold-coast/ Why should you go to the Gold Coast? Leanne and Lyle say, "We go for lots of different reasons, but I guess the main one would be, the stunning beaches, and I know lots of places have stunning beaches, but this would have to, I think, be Australia's best strip of beaches, and it's the best surfing beach area, in Australia. It has a really interesting nightlife too. It's the nature, it's right there at the mountains as well and it's adventure. It's got a nickname of the Glitter Strip or, our Glamour Strip. It's it's not Las Vegas by any stretch of the imagination, but it's got that feel about it." Leanne and Lyle lay out a week-long itinerary: Day 1: Start your visit in the middle of the Gold Coast, in Surfers Paradise. Explore Cavill Avenue, a pedestrian-only strip with attractions like wax museums and Ripley's Believe It or Not. Stroll along the beachfront walkways and enjoy the beautiful beaches and surfers. Check out the iconic Surfers Paradise beach area and consider visiting the Q1 building for breathtaking views of the Gold Coast. If you're adventurous you can climb the outside of the building. Keep an eye out for the meter maids made famous by the Beatles. Day 2: Head about 40 kilometers inland from the Gold Coast to Mount Tamborine, a mountainous area known for its lush rainforests. Explore the little town of Tamborine and the Gallery Walk, featuring craft shops, pottery, and more. Enjoy the Rainforest Skywalk and explore Lamington National Park, known for its hiking trails, waterfalls, and lookouts. Consider hot air ballooning or visit local wineries and coffee plantations. Day 3: Experience whale-watching cruises starting from South Port Marina. You'll have a chance to see humpback whales from June to November. After the cruise, explore the South Port Marina area and enjoy the beautiful views. Consider dining at local surf clubs and taking a stroll along the Tweed River with its picturesque views. Day 4: Visit Pacific Fair, a large shopping center with various shops, food courts, and outdoor areas. Explore Broadbeach, known for its range of restaurants and cafes. You can visit Kurrawa Surf Club for lunch, take coastal walks, and enjoy the park. Day 5: Explore Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay, where you can visit the iconic Snapper Rocks and enjoy the beach and local restaurants. You can also visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where you'll encounter Australian wildlife, see wild lorikeet feedings, and enjoy various animal encounters and activities. Day 6: Take a day trip to Moreton Island, known for the Tangalooma Wrecks, sunken ships that create a unique snorkeling experience. Enjoy the underwater scenery with coral and various fish species. You can also participate in dolphin feeding, where wild dolphins swim close to shore to take fish from your hand. Day 7: Spend a relaxing day, perhaps visiting a spa or wellness center at your accommodation. Enjoy the beach, swim, and unwind, taking in the serene surroundings of the Gold Coast. Some optional activities would include exploring some of Australia's best theme parks including Movie World, Dream World, and Wet'n'Wild. Consider purchasing a multi-day park pass to experience all the rides and attractions these parks offer. You might also check if there are any local sporting events happening during your stay, such as NRL or Aussie Rules games. Fans of racing should think about attending events like the Gold Coast 500 V8 Supercars race or the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia. In both events, cars race through the streets of the Gold Coast. For a side-trip consider a day trip to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, which is only about a 45-minute train ride away. Explore Brisbane's attractions, such as the Botanic Gardens, South Bank, and the River City's waterfront. You can attend unique cabaret shows like "Dracula's" or "Outback Spectacular" to add some excitement to your evenings. Be aware of the two weeks in November when kids Queensland and New South Wales visit the Gold Coast for "schoolies" celebrations. This is Australia's version of spring break for recently graduated high school seniors. It might not be the ideal time for a visit if you're looking for a quieter experience. If you are looking for a mix of glamour, beach, and nature, then consider Queensland's Gold Coast.

This is a simple, no-prep method for helping students give authentic, skills-focused feedback on peer projects. Having students set up art projects, STEM designs, etc. around the room in a gallery format, then having students leave sticky note compliments around peer projects using content-specific vocabulary we were focusing on. Check out examples here and here of how we've done this with an art project! Don't forget to share this episode with a friend who would find it helpful, and catch you next week for another of may favorite peer feedback strategies!

Artist Jay Handy, originally from Bay City, Michigan, is presenting a one-person exhibit at Studio 23 in Bay City starting March 25, 2022. The exhibit titled: This Must Be The Place, will include one-of-a-kind pulled prints depicting imagery found in vintage photographs of Bay City. Jay Handy imagined a community project that actually crowd-sourced the residents of this riverfront city in Michigan, to submit their family photos to be used as inspiration and collage elements in his artwork. Val and Armin are so happy that they had a chance to get to know Jay and look forward to attending his reception and workshop. Jay Handy is a printmaker specializing in etching and chine collé to create the signature dreamlike quality that permeates his work. From the Harvard Business School to Lesley University College of Art and Design, the winding road he traveled to arrive at his current position as a passionate and prolific artist imbues his art with the characteristic sense of tension and nostalgia his work is known for. Jay resides in Madison, Wisconsin, where he continues to weave memories into preserved moments in time. Nostalgia is a primary presence in Jay's work, which contrasts beautifully with underlying elements of artistic tension. Like most artists, Jay finds himself reaching back into his history for inspiration. His work seamlessly conjures up memorable moments in life that trigger a feeling and capture that special moment for the viewer. Artist Statement from Jay Handy: My art is an exploration of memory, both in its function and its feeling. When we think back on a memory, it's never quite the same as the initial experience that it was born of—a unique and complicated aura now surrounds it. Depending on the moment in time, it may be tinged with a hint of tenderness or a sense of forlornness. I find myself caught on a memory, turning it over and over in my mind to uncover every unique thread of nostalgia, of joy, of tension. The memory becomes a distinct moment in time, with so clear a life and story all its own that I'm compelled to transform it from a vision to a tangible image. My use of etching and chine collé recreate the memory and transmute the unique qualities that frame it into a language that can speak to viewers and stir within them that shared experience of nostalgia and memory. Regardless of who we are, where we're from, or what time period we've lived through, we each have our own experience of memory and the often bittersweet qualities that those memories are preserved in. My art is the translation of memory from floating fragments to captured moments. Thank you to Jay Handy for this wonderful conversation for Art Ladders. Exhibition at Studio 23 in Bay City starts March 25, 2022. Studio 23 is at 901 N. Water Street, Bay City, MI with telephone number: 989-894-2323. There will be a gallery walk and talk that day starting at 4:15pm and a reception starting at 5pm. Link to Jay Handy's "This Must Be The Place" exhibit reception at Studio 23 in Bay City. Carousel Teaching - what on earth is it? In its simplest form, it is a cooperative learning strategy that involves movement, discussion and reflection. It is a bit like Gallery Walk (as named by Shelley Gray) where students work on their own to complete a series of tasks around the room or school environment. In a Carousel, they work in small groups and move from station to station. This podcast looks at strategies to use in a single classroom following this model. For support materials, go to www.klerrisacustommusic.com.au
This discussion technique allows students to be actively engaged as they walk throughout the classroom. They work together in small groups to share ideas and respond to meaningful questions, documents, images, problem-solving situations or texts.
On tap this week is a ranging conversation with multiple visitors recorded at Gallery Walk at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Lafayette. Those who visit me at the mic include Amy Long and Cindy Gerlach of Lafayette Journal & Courier's Live765 arts page, Eric Van Cleave of the Long Center, and two local young people talking about their work on a private graphic novel project and video work respectively.
Gallery Walk! Resources: http://www.theteachertoolkit.com/index.php/tool/gallery-walk https://serc.carleton.edu/introgeo/gallerywalk/what.html https://www.cte.cornell.edu/teaching-ideas/Two-Minute-Teaching-Tips/Gallery-Walk.html What: Use of white boards or large sticky notes posted around a room. Each sticky note/white board has a topic listed. As an example, a Gallery Walk could be used for teaching Antifungal Pharmacotherapy. Each sticky note would have a topic such as“Azoles”, “Echinocandins”, “Candida”, etc. I recommend having 5 or more sticky notes/topics for each Gallery Walk. How: Learners are divided into teams that can range from one student per team to 10 or more. Each team is assigned a topic/sticky note and given a unique color of marker. When the instructor says go, the team has a set time (usually 30 seconds to 1 minute) to write down everything they know about the topic on the sticky note in front of them. After the time is up, they rotate to the next sticky note and topic. They have to write down everything they know on that topic, but cannot repeat anything that another team has already written on that sticky note. Once all teams have rotated through all topics, the instructor walks to each sticky note and reads each statement aloud. The class then decides if the statement is accurate or not. If it is not accurate, the instructor will strike through it. The winning team is the one that has the most accurate statements, (as identified by the unique color of marker), in total across all topics. A non-competitive form of the Gallery Walk is to evaluate all statements and identify the top 3 statements that should be known about each topic. Students then have a more focused understanding of each topic. Who: Small or large groups, though smaller teams may be more effective Classroom or practice site When/Why: Goal of this strategy is to quickly assess the baseline knowledge that a learner has going into a lecture. While it could be used at the end of a lecture as a review of content recently taught, I prefer to use the Gallery Walk as a way to focus my teaching. By identifying the gaps in student knowledge, (such as subtopics rarely or never mentioned by any teams), and well understood areas (such as subtopics mentioned by all teams), the instructor can focus class time on information that may need clarification. Estimated classroom time: 15-20 minutes What topics: Almost any content Any topic that has clear subcategories/topics (I have also used with disease states such as diabetic ketoacidosis) Identified gaps and misinformation from previous clinical experience/education related to DKA Other: This active learning strategy, like many, requires the instructor to be comfortable with a small amount of chaos. Learners typically enjoy this game and become competitive. It also has quite a bit of noise with all of the teams rapidly discussing the topic. They also tend to respond with commentary regarding the accuracy of their statements on a topic (and when the instructor strikes through inaccurate ones). Gallery Walk was a success with heterogeneous groups of learners and could be an opportunity for interprofessional education and communication
Student videos started to get on my nerves. It was the same thing over and over. The kids put most of their efforts into making them funny and violent. The videos seemed more slapstick than expressive. I retooled the way kids create videos and the results have been spectacular. This episode is about HOW I have my students do this and HOW they present their work to one another. Episode 44 is about student presentations via the gallery walk. In this program, I'm going to promote the idea of creating a virtual gallery walk. I was impressed a couple of years ago when I had my kids take a virtual tour of the Caves of Lascaux. I remember thinking...Wouldn't it be cool if my kids could create a virtual exhibit? My students mastered this challenge with the help of Google Slides and wonderful screen recorder called Screencastify.
Doug and Jill Taylor roll thru the Gallery Walk in West Chester, PA. It's an eclectic mix of receptions and one night exhibits. We met some old friends, took in some amazing artwork and generally had a great time.
