Black farmers are losing land at an alarming rate in the United States. Hearing the struggles of Black farmers in North Carolina during the pandemic prompted the founders of Tall Grass Food Box to ask themselves, “ What is our role in their sustainability?” Derrick Beasley, Gabrielle Carter, and Gerald Harris came together to aggregate food and produce from Black farmers across North Carolina in a community-supported agriculture (or CSA) food box, with one-off or seasonal subscription purchasing options. With an immediate, positive response from the community following the launch of the project, the demand for more infrastructure to make this collaborative effort long-term grew significantly. Through fiscal sponsorship and the help of The Bulls of Durham, they have been able to secure a refrigerated truck to transport produce for local pick-up and expand their service area throughout the Triangle. Tall Grass Food Box has created an entry point for people of all ages to grow their relationship with their local food system, an entrepreneurial pursuit in food sovereignty. VP of Advisory Services, Value Capture Episode page with video, transcript, and more My guest for Episode #459 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is my colleague, Gerald Harris, a Vice President of Advisory Services at the firm Value Capture. Disclosure – I often work as a senior advisor with Value Capture clients and I have a marketing role with the firm. Gerald has over 25 years of leadership experience in the delivery of successful large-scale lean transformations across a broad range of industries and companies. His industry experience includes various automotive manufacturing settings and products and, for the past 14 years, healthcare. While at Tenneco Automotive, a $1.5 billion manufacturer of exhaust and ride control systems, Gerald implemented lean manufacturing and lean enterprise improvement principles throughout the organization. For the 14 years before joining Value Capture, Gerald served as Executive Director for Simpler North America, where he was instrumental in client launches and Executive Coaching for most of Simpler's largest clients. Today, we discuss topics and questions including: How — when and where — did you first get introduced to Lean? Motivations for Lean in those early settings? Early activities — what went well? Lessons learned from challenges? PULL – “flow if you can, pull if you must, but never push” Did people there even think that improvement was possible? Any improvement was possible? Short-term vs. longer-term countermeasures, adding inventory to be able to improve — or adding labor? “Step change” – response to medication errors? Adding inspection step? Interesting that Toyota still has final inspection?? Systems vs. processes? Work, management, improvement systems From nursing tasks to the healthcare value stream Seeing vs. purposeful observation? Value Capture's “guided self-assessment” Leaders being too far removed from the work in healthcare How did you find the right balance as a plant manager? You've gotten more than comfortable with both… Bigger adjustment — becoming a consultant or shifting into healthcare? The pitch for Value Capture? Envisioning the IDEAL – how do we get to zero? The podcast is sponsored by Stiles Associates, now in their 30th year of business. They are the go-to Lean recruiting firm serving the manufacturing, private equity, and healthcare industries. Gerald Harris, Father, Hoffman Board Chair emeritus, and Energy Economist is our guest today. Gerald shares his journey from growing up in rural south Georgia to his current life with his sons in Northern California. He shares his Hoffman Journey of transformation. Listen all the way to the end for Gerald's powerful reflections on forgiveness and transformation. Born and raised in Hapeville, Georgia until he was six years old, Gerald talks about what it was like to grow up in a village of extended family. His family was poor but he didn't know it. At the age of six, he and his mother moved to Chicago for work. Suddenly, it was just Gerald and his mother. Gerald shares how he suffered abuse from his single mother. The Process helped him take his mother down off of the pedestal he'd learned to put her on as a child so he could squarely look at what had really happened in his childhood. He was able to see the patterns he adopted from her and release them through the Process. By completing the Hoffman Process, Gerald was able to heal the pain of his childhood so that this past pain would not affect his sons. Generational healing releases generational patterns and the painful emotions they cause. When patterns are released, our own lives and our children's lives can hold more Light and Love. Gerald's world at the Process made it possible for his sons' lives to be freer of generational patterning. One of the other places the Process supported Gerald through transformation was in his sense of spirituality. As a child, he grew up Christian. Prior to doing the Process, Gerald was reading Buddhist thought and other kinds of thought as well. After the Process, Gerald came to understand that spirituality is not about any particular religion. He found it is about love, forgiveness, kindness, compassion, and justice. The Process supported Gerald in discovering a heart-centered way of communicating that he uses in all his relationships, both personal and professional. More about Gerald Harris: Gerald Harris is president of the Quantum Planning Group (QPG), which he founded in 2009. His company specializes in assisting businesses and non-profit organizations in strategic and business planning using the tools of scenario analysis. He works extensively with companies in the energy sector, particularly gas and electricity. Gerald received his BA in economics from Morehouse College, where he graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and an MBA in finance and business economics from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Gerald's first book, The Art of Quantum Planning, Seven Ideas from Quantum Physics for Breakthroughs in Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership, was published by Berrett Koehler Publishing in August 2009. Gerald joined the Board of the Hoffman Institute in 2007, after completing the Process in December 2002. From mid-year 2012 until April of 2022 Gerald served as Board Chair, working cooperatively with the entire leadership team. Gerald currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Club of California. There, he leads the Technology and Society member-led forum where he produces programs for the Club. He is the father of two adult sons. More is available at his website: www.artofquantumplanning.com. As mentioned in this episode: Download The Quadrinity Process paper Gerald mentions: A Path to Personal Freedom and Love. Projection: "The process of displacing one's feelings onto a different person, animal, or object." - Psychology Today The Great Migration: "The Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in United States history. Approximately six million Black people moved from the American South to Northern, Midwestern, and Western states roughly from the 1910s until the 1970s. The driving force behind the mass movement was to escape racial violence, pursue economic and educational opportunities, and obtain freedom from the oppression of Jim Crow.
RYAN & WILLIE Ryan & Willie formed in the smoky dives around the Five Points area of East Nashville in 2010. The duo consists of Ryan Waniata (vocals, guitar) and Willie Guy Arnot (multi-instrumentalist). What initially started as two songwriters pitching songs to the Row evolved into something entirely different. Although both have a profound love for country music, they found they weren't satisfied sticking solely to one genre. Their shared love of rock, blues, folk, RnB, funk and jazz drove them to explore where their writing could take them. Ryan & Willie have set a goal of releasing EPs that are each in a new genre. Their first EP, Amuse Boot was released in March of 2021. It showcases both their lyrical stylings and quirky arrangements. In January of 2022, Ryan & Willie released their second EP, Fall in the Void. The second EP saw them ditching the acoustic arrangements for a full-out rocker. Fall in the Void also features Moon Taxi's Wes Bailey (keys) and Tyler Ritter (drums). ******************************************************************************** GERALD HARRIS Gerald Harris' father bought him an acoustic guitar when he was 12 years old, and Gerald has been on a musical journey ever since. His mother taught him to play piano and sing, and in his youth, he was a part of both the youth and adult choirs. When he was 18 years old Carrie Records offered him an independent recording contract to record a single. After a short-lived R&B career, he went back where he belonged, to God. He's always enjoyed writing, playing, and singing gospel music, and he began doing gospel recording sessions for different choirs, artists, and producers in Nashville TN.and Atlanta Ga. After that, he continued to write and compose, and his wife persuaded him to go back to the studio and do a few demos.
Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded June 11th, 2022 A foreign war is being used by the Canadian establishment to further entrench its thought monopoly on a nation still staggered following a two-plus year cognitive pounding. Now that the hoi polloi has been sufficiently head-softened, the reasoning seems, it's time for the second of the old one/two punch combination. Ukraine is doing double-duty in this, both providing Bay Street warmongers the necessary pretense of moral rectitude for their bloody bonanza, while too granting social license for Ottawa to tear the guts out of a burgeoning popular opposition - even if it means eviscerating the country's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And, so far, the wind has blown from their back. Stavroula Pabst is a writer, comedian, and PhD student in Communications and Mass Media Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her writing appears online at The Grayzone, Reductress, the Harvard Business Review, and at Passage, the "Canadian publication of thoughtful political, economic, and cultural ideas from a left-wing perspective" where I found her recent article, 'Big Tech's Purge of Dissenters is Impeding an Anti-War Movement.' Stavroula Pabst in the first half. And; this Victoria has undergone massive changes over its nearly two centuries of settler occupation. One enduring physical feature of the area epitomizes the altered landscape and displacement of both the First Peoples and flora and fauna living here at the time of contact. The Bowker Creek Watershed, named for an early settler/farmer, has tenaciously persisted despite having had a city land on top of it; but, like the rest of the south island it little resembles its original self. The Bowker's survival though has never been certain, and now it depends on our diligent attention and continued vigilance in its protection. Gerald Harris is a Director of the Friends of Bowker Creek Society and local leader of the Streamkeepers group working to reestablish salmon returns to Bowker Creek. The Friends are concerned by a recent sale of a section along the creek that could threaten both its ecology and the ability of citizens to protect it. Gerald Harris and befriending the Bowker in the second half. But first, Stavroula Pabst and deconstructing Canadian dissent. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing since 1998. In episode 36 of Blackbelt Voices, Adena and Kara continue the conversation about Black food culture – this time from an agricultural angle. Our guest, Gerald Harris, along with his partners Derek Beasley and Gabrielle E.W. Carter (who was featured in the Netflix series High on the Hog as well as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal)started Tall Grass Food Box, a community-supported agricultural model (CSA). Gerald told us about a Tuskegee professor named Booker T. Whatley who many call the godfather of CSA. He is best known for his regenerative farming system, in combination with the direct-marketing concept of a customer harvesting operation known as pick-your-own. Dr. Whatley has been said to be 30 years ahead of his time. Lots of experts in the field still refer to his 10 commandments for small farmers. Gerald also pointed to the 1920 Census, which shows the number of Black farmers in America Peaked at 949,889. In 2019 there were just over 45,000 Black farmers according to figures from the US Department of Agriculture. Tall Grass was born out of the pandemic. So Gerald says they've learned a lot about the CSA business space, who they could trust, and how to help. They have been expanding. Some other positive outcomes include they now have a refrigerated vehicle. Those funds were raised by their community and people who wanted to see them succeed. Thanks to Gerald for being a guest on our podcast. Wow episode 9 this was a great episode we had Gerald Harris with us live that was a lot of fun very good dude. We talked about UFC Stockholm, LFA68 and CES56. Lot of great fights happened. Thx for sticking around this long with us more shenanigans to come.
We kick off this episode of Fight Stuff with a couple British students havin' a square off in a round of fisticuffs which prompts a whole episode discussing filling up the basement before heading to the attic, the etiquette of no ground game but you have to shake hands after you're done. We discuss the class war surrounding leg attacks in jiu jitsu and the civility of sportsmanship fighting. We discuss our new tagline: The Combat podcast for everyone! And then Sporps: Bellator takes us to Thackerville, OK where Gerald Harris and Anatoly Tokov and went back and forth and challenged the definition of CTE only to bring back the ten finger guillotine, a Pettis vs TMA Master Stephen Wonderboy Thompson break down from UFC Fight Night, a dojo storm featuring Nam Phan, sometimes when you get TKO’d you’re just tired and inefficient with your movements and that shouldn't be considered real kung fu, getting Diaz’ed vs getting Khabib’ed, Wonderboy as a Napoleon Dynamite Uber-mensch Farm boy or he’s gonna be the hottest guy in a redneck town, leglocks and side kicks don’t work, such a sweet boy who just got KTFO. Then on to this week's Show and Tell: Jarrett’s Experience at Pan Americans BJJ competition, being considered old at 30 in the world of IBJJF, the complex and silly scoring of sport fighting, the anxiety and fear of fighting in front of friends and family, pushing through fear, a drug cocktail of weed, kratom, and reading, how lessons learned for preparing and showing up for a sport fight might translate to almost every other aspect of your life, and how if you’re not losing you’re not learning. If you have a suggestion for viral clip of the week, or a topic related to anything fight stuff you think we should explore, email us at fightstuffpodcast@gmail.com , follow us on instagram http://www.instagram.com/fightstuffpodcast , and if you dig the who leave us a nice review! You can also find us individually http://www.instagram.com/zekethomasisrad and http://www.instagram.com/jarrettsleeperpoetryandmotion See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We'll be previewing the matchup, discussing all the side work Elias has on his plate, and a whole lot more.
