Send us a textKatie and Bridget turn into mice as they re-watch a nostalgic favorite of theirs: The Witches! A movie that reminds us that witches are real, some are evil, yet most are just really enthusiastic about being in a witch sorority/getting to party at a hotel with their friends once a year. Come along as we meet Luke, a little boy for some of the movie - mouse for others, who is taught all there is to know about witches by his Grandma, a woman who will write a harsh Yelp review to defend her grandson. When they vacation at a seaside hotel they quickly realize they are in the presence of not only witches but also the Grand High Witch, the most dramatic woman you've ever met in your life who SHOULD have her own reality show! Her plan to turn all the children into mice is overheard by Luke, which leads him to get turned into a mouse and therefore has to pull an Ocean's 11 heist to defeat the witches. Will Luke have to stay as a mouse forever/also live in cool ass Lego houses that Grandma built him? Is Mr. Bean out for blood in the climax of this movie!? Released in 1990, it was based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name and features Anjelica Huston, Rowan Atkinson, Mai Zetterling, and Jasen Fisher.

This week the Puppet Masters of None continue their discussion of spooky-scary kids movies with the 1990 Jim Henson fantasy film, The Witches. From the mind of master storyteller, Roald Dahl , this truly terrifying tale of a boy battling the Grand High Witch has been the fuel of nightmares for generations of children. Often considered to be Henson's last film, find out more about the production of the movie, its puppetry, and of course, where we place it on both the space to carol spectrum and the spooky scale. We're back for another Banned Book discussion about Roald Dahl's The Witches (1963) which we've partnered with Nicolas Roeg's 1990 adaptation, as well as tangential conversation about Robert Zemeckis' 2020 film. Thanks to listener Miriam for contributing!Yes, this book was banned...for promoting witchcraft, not Dahl's anti-semitism, which we have to discuss . It's such a shame because the book - with its willingness to put children in danger and its "grim dark" ending - is still great (bonus points for Quentin Blake's illustrations). Then the film is all about Anjelica Houston's Grand High Witch, cute Jim Henson mice, Roeg's POV camerawork and great practical FX.Wanna connect with the show? Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies Podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of Anjelica Huston. Best known for her roles as Morticia Addams, the Grand High Witch, and Lilly in The Grifters, Huston comes from a family of Hollywood royalty (John, Daniel, and Walter). Among other topics, we discuss her public spats with other actors, her significant awards footprint, our opinions on Woody Allen, a potential Hardcore/Horrid Henry crossover, and the entertainment of PETA trolling on Twitter. Where does Huston's career rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
The 1990 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches remains a cult classic for those of us that grew up with it and a big part of that is definitely Angelica Huston's terrifying performance as The Grand High Witch. The film doesn't just traumatize its young viewers, though - it also empowers them. It's a world where even the most evil of forces can be conquered by the smallest of creatures. Not everyone was a fan, however, and Dahl himself wound up being one of its biggest detractors. He was so disappointed by the changes they made to his source text that it reportedly brought him to tears. That being the case, we can't help but wonder how he would have felt about the more recent adaptation that hit HBO Max late last year. Topics include: the banning of the original book, other actresses considered for The Grand High Witch, makeup vs cgi in the design of the title characters, the effect Angelica Huston had on 90s audiences, the setting of the 2020 version and the impact that had on the film's themes, the "limb controversy" sparked by the 2020 version, the post-production problems that delayed the release of the 1990 version, and much more! From the director of Welcome to Marwen (2018) comes a new dark fantasy comedy called The Witches (2020). That's right ladies and gents, Robert Zemeckis is back adapting Roald Dahl's book The Witches (1983) and remaking Nicolas Roeg adaptation of The Witches (1990). Why would Zemeckis remake a classic adaptation of a classic book? Because we now have the power of computer animation! Zemeckis miscasts Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch in an attempt to fill the shoes of Anjelica Huston from the 1990 version. And that's just one of Zemeckis's sins that we'll talk about in our comprehensive review. The movie also stars Octavia Spencer, Jahzir Kadeem, Stanley Tucci, and the voice of Chris Rock. Watch this movie on HBO Max or don't.
Roald Dahl's The Witches, reimagined by Robert Zemeckis for a modern audience, is a dark fantasy comedy about a young boy-turned-mouse and his grandmother who battle some big bad witches to save children across the world. Was this film able to live up to the original or did it fail to bring in a new audience? --- Reimagining Roald Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans. Zemeckis is joined by a world-class team of filmmakers, including Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris. The cast includes powerhouse performances from Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth and Chris Rock, with newcomer Jahzir Kadeen Bruno as the brave young hero. Trouble is, the duo are then faced with the worst witch of them all - The Grand High Witch, played by Anne Hathaway. In this episode, we review HBO's latest feature-length offering, The Witches, and discuss if this whimsical live-action retelling of a children's book was truly the film Robert Zemeckis should have made.

She's The Grand High Witch in The Witches. Special thanks to Warner Bros for supplying the audio.
The episode dives into a childhood favorite book, The Witches by Roald Dahl and how the book inspired a movie, a movie remake, and eventually a Roblox Islands Halloween event! The Grand High Witch's speech is read from The Witches by Roald Dahl which was publish in 1983 by Puffin Books Literary Guidlines: Parents, this episode includes the literary term THEME, which means the universal message, or lesson in the book. It can also be defined as how the book explores a particular topic, or "life lesson". A "reoccurring theme", is when an author replays these same thoughts, lessons, explorations in multiple works of literature. This is something Roald Dahl definitely does, exploring under appreciated children, and cruel adults. This is why his work is so attractive to kids, it gives them space to wonder, "What if I'm not always wrong; what if the adults are?"
Happy Halloween, Witches! Get ready for some Satanic Panic, because we are flying back to 1990 to celebrate the Grand High Witch of Movie Halloween: Angelica Huston in THE WITCHES! Streaming News Twitch streamers outraged over new unban request feature From rude messages in chat to pesky spam, bans are there as a safety measure to counter it all. Once banned, there was no way for these accounts to annoy or harass streamers moving forward. That was up until today, at least. Twitch revealed a new widget on Sep. 30 that allows mods to go through ‘unban requests.' While it could prove useful for the odd occasion where an account is wrongfully banned, the announcement mainly went down like a ton of bricks. “Channel banned users can submit an appeal through the Chat column,” the Twitch Support post explained. Through this appeal, moderators can then “review and take action.” This gives pesky accounts a second chance at doing the right thing, but it also sets the stage for even more bother. Dainty- Many are saying this will lead to further harassment by trolls. What are your thoughts on this new tool? Twitch Streamer Has Been Live For Over 1,000 Hours Straight While a lot of news regarding Twitch in 2020 is usually related to a new ban, things are changing up with a Twitch streamer getting a new record for the site. Twitch streamer GPHustla currently has the record for the longest continuous stream on the site. GPHustla's stream is currently clocked at over 1000 hours with the time still ticking up, as the stream is still ongoing as of September 28, 2020. The stream initially began as a 24-hour marathon stream, but it ended up going beyond original plans. The stream originally began back in August, making it well over a month since GPHustla's life has been out for the world to see. If GPHustla were to continue the stream up until his attempt with Guinness World Records, this original stream would clock in at well over 3000 hours. WWE reportedly taking control of all wrestler Twitch accounts We talked a few weeks ago about wwe reportedly telling talent they needed to cease any outside activity using their likeness such as personal appearances or streaming. They have now shifted course by taking direct control of their accounts and only giving performers a cut of whatever profit they bring in. Stump - How much do you think this will pay off for rival promotions as contracts finish up at wwe? Twitch's Soundtrack feature debuts today, and it will let streamers play music while they're live Today, Twitch releases Soundtrack, a new product that allows streamers to play music while they're live — or, at least, that's the simplest way to explain it. If the product works the way Twitch says it does, Soundtrack will be much more than just a way to play rights-cleared music while you're broadcasting. It might change how you think about using music on Twitch entirely. Soundtrack separates the music stream into its own channel and broadcasts it simultaneously but, crucially, separately. That integration allows Twitch to automatically strip the music from the VOD of your live stream — because songs that are cleared for live use aren't necessarily also cleared for use in recordings — and at the same time allows the site to do a lot of cool platform-side things with the music itself. (In a word: it solves the desktop audio problem.) Jac - We all speculated recently about something like this coming from twitch when we talked about Twitch sings shutting down. Originally announced in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed multiple times already - most recently from April to September, and then to its current 19th November date. "These last six weeks are our final sprint on a project we've all spent much of our lives on. Something we care for deeply. The majority of the team understands that push, especially in light of the fact that we've just sent the game to cert and every day brings us visibly closer to shipping a game we want to be proud of. "This is one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but everyone is well compensated for every extra hour they put in. And, like in recent years, 10 percent of the annual profit our company generates in 2020 will be split directly among the team." Dainty - They have been working on this much anticipated game a long time. How do you feel about the broken promise here with the compulsory OT? Apex Legends crossplay beta starts with Aftermarket Collection Event Apex Legends crossplay is officially coming on October 6, as part of the new Aftermarket Collection event. The event also adds a new event, and lots of new cosmetic content and challenges. Crossplay was confirmed for a Fall launch earlier in 2020, but this first rollout is technically just a beta, as Respawn tests all the features. Cross-progression isn't available at this time, but Respawn will talk more about this during the Steam launch later this year. The beta will be used to test functionality before a full crossplay launch. Players on all platforms can play with each other, but by default, console players will only play with other console players. “The centerpiece of this mode are Flash Points, massive zones dotted around towns in Kings Canyon. Flash Points are special because they regenerate your health and shields over time to get you healed and ready for combat in a flash ( ba dum-tss ). Learn where these are quickly because healing items do not spawn in this mode – Flashpoints are crucial to helping you stay alive.” Jac - As a seasoned apex player how are you feeling about the new mode and crossplay?Entertainment News Cobra Kai Renewed For Season 4, Season 3 Release Date Set For Early 2021 The Karate Kid sequel TV show Cobra Kai is renewed for season 4 at Netflix as the streaming service sets the season 3 release date. In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing THE WITCHES (1990), currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Based on a children's book by Roald Dahl, the film tells the story of Luke, a young boy who stumbles on a witches convention and is thrust into an adventure where he is tasked with saving all the children of the world from the peril being planned by some pretty evil witches. Will he succeed or fail? You've got to check it out - directed by Nicolas Roeg the film features performances by Angelica Houston as the Grand High Witch, Mai Zetterling as Luke's Grandmother and Jasen Fisher as Luke. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support
Having never read the book as a kid, the 1990 on screen adaptation of The Witches was always classic childhood nostalgia for me... And the older I got, the more I noticed how dark in tone that movie truly could get. It had the potential to be a horror/comedy if it wanted to be. So when the news broke that Robert Zemeckis himself was directing Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch in a remake, with Octavia Spencer as the Grandmother, I was surprisingly all in. With names like these and then some, there's no way this can fail. Right? Enjoy, people.
We continue "Spooky Month" at The Tape Store with the brilliant Jim Henson-produced film The Witches (1990). We have a blast talking about this film that's filled with so many memorable moments and rich characters. Join us as we discuss the adventures of one of our favorite film heroines, the witch hunter Helga (Mai Zetterling) and her grandson Luke (Jasen Fisher), along with other excellent players like the hilarious Herbert Jenkins (Bill Paterson), the irritable Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson), the mysterious Ms. Irvine (Jane Horrocks), and of course, the iconic performance of Anjelica Huston as The Grand High Witch. We also spend some time comparing the endings of the film with the book (written by Roald Dahl) and sharing the powerful messages we found throughout the film.
The Witches (1990), Nicholas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, is traumatising af. A young boy and his grandmother as stumble onto a witch's convention. The witches are wicked and sadistic, and beneath their appearance as regular women are hideous, bald, toe-less creatures who hate children more than anything else. Their leader, the Grand High Witch (portrayed with maximum camp by Anjelica Huston) is the worst witch of them all. I'm joined by the wicked smart Tara Judah, Cinema Producer at the Watershed in Bristol and frequent collaborator of The Final Girls, to dig into some of the reasons why this film, and Angelica Huston's performance, really gets under your skin. We talk about Anjelica Huston's sexy, slinky and campy take on the Grand High Witch, the grotesque physicality of the witches, how this fits into Nicholas Roeg's other work and why it remains terrifying for both children AND adults. *** The Final Girls are a UK-based film collective exploring the intersections of horror film and feminism. The phrase "nightmare fuel" gets tossed around pretty liberally these days, but back in the 90s there were few kids movies more befitting of that title than The Witches. Based on an already frightening book by Roald Dahl, this adaptation ratchets up the scares even further thanks to Angelica Huston's scenery-chewing performance and the incredible effects work of Jim Henson. Not everyone was a fan though. Dahl famously hated some of the alterations made to his source material (particularly the new ending) and thought that the filmmakers had missed the point entirely. It had been a long, long time since any of us had seen this and we were interested to find out if a more objective viewing would reveal that some of Dahl's complaints were valid or that this was still the pull no punches thrill ride we remembered. Topics include: key differences between the movie and the novel, how unprepared one of us was for Bruno's transformation sequence, whether or not the Grand High Witch knew the mice would be able to talk, how director Nicolas Roeg was able to capture the feeling of reading one of Dahl's books, our thoughts on the different endings, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
