“Last night, you were unhinged. You were like some desperate howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again.” We watched “The Addams Family” with our friends Michael and Callum from the amazing podcast  “Once Upon a VHS” and we have the sudden urge for Girl Scout cookies. We've already covered the diva Debbie Jellinsky from the iconic sequel “Addams Family Values” in a previous episode, and now we're here to talk about where it all started.  This entire cast is a complete and total serve from Angelica Huston's iconic Morticia to itty bitty Christina Ricci's perfect Wednesday and the legendary Raul Julia as the original “wife guy” Gomez. Because of the timeless nature of this movie this doesn't feel dated at all… that is until “Addams Groove” by none other than 90's  legend MC Hammer graces the credits.  Angelica can read you down with a simple look, Christopher LLoyd's Fester is insanely genius and MTMUG lucky charm Dan Hedaya graces the pod with his 9th appearance (that we know of!).  Listen we give everyone in this cast their flowers and they all deserve them - this group of stone cold weirdos really came together and made spooky movie history.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagn

Feature Creep: Built-in Microwave

Ned and Meg rehash and review the totally queer-coded movie “Ice Pirates” from 1984. This movie is a mashup of every 1980s cinematic trope in one place and we LOVE it! This anachronistic film has a 17% critics score and a 50% positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so you know mischief is afoot. Why the discrepancy? Listen and we'll tell you. It's got women bodybuilders bikini wrestling at the behest of a gay disembodied head and literal helping hands popping out of the kitchen walls, plus spandex bodysuits and tickle torture. Not convinced? What if I name drop Angelica Huston? How about Angelica Huston and Ron Perelman, together, as pirates, in space? That's right, Hell Boy is just a wee baby man in this movie. Gawd it's so good why are you even still reading this, go watch it on YouTube now! Thanks for listening. Wash your hands, don't be a dick!

While studying at the Los Angeles Trade and Technical College, he met and became an assistant designer to his mentor the late Bill Whitten. With the help and support of Bill Whitten, Stella Ruata, Bessie Nelson, Warren R. Caton- he reached his goal rather quickly. Keith was working with entertainers such as Don Cornelius, Dolly Parton, Jermaine Stewart, Chico Debarge, Blair Underwood, Bobby Brown, Whitney Huston, Michael Jackson, Heavy D, Boyz II Men, GUY, New Edition, Johnny Gill, LSG, Patti Labelle, The Body Sisters, Sam Kinison, Little Richard, The Temptations, Surface, Barry White, Chante Moore and Latin super star Juan Gabriel. Recently at Keith Holman Presents “7 Decades in Hollywood,” costumes and archives were presented from Michael Jackson, Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the 1939 Judy Garland version of “The Wizard of Oz” and other legendary performers. The next natural step for Keith was to branch out and produce a clothing line, Holman Harper Designs, which was picked up by major retailers and specialty boutiques including Macy's, H. Lorenzo, Exclusive, Fred Siegel and others. Shortly after, Keith took his creativity to music, television and movies. He designed clothing and wardrobe for more than two hundred music videos designed for special episodes of hit TV shows, such as LA Law and Doogie Howser, M.D., for various award shows including the Grammy's, Soul Train Music Awards, Academy Awards, and American Music Awards. Keith's designs also were showcased on major artists' tours including Michael Jackson's, Victory, Bad, Dangerous and History tours; Dolly Parton's Treasures tour; New Edition's Tours; Bobby Brown; Johnny Gill; L.S.G; Heavy D and Boys to Men; Guy; Cassandra Pierson “Elvira Mistress of the Dark;” the late Sam Kinison and others. Wanting to strengthen and expand his talent and creativity into the interior/exterior design industry, Keith studied at Thomas Schoos Designs. The list of celebrities that have put their home decorating into Keith's capable hands includes Bernadette Peters, Eddie and Nicole Murphy, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Jamie and StevenTisch, Tracey Bregman-Recht, Kim Novak, Mrs. John Huston, Will and Jada Smith, and Countess Maria Cortez. During this time, he also began facilitating the sale of antiques and designing meditation gardens for his top clients. Working alongside Icrave Design, Keith decorated and designed for casual elegance One Sunset on the Sunset Strip, STK Restaurant in West Hollywood, Coco De Ville in West Hollywood and Boudoir West Hollywood. During this time, Keithcontinued to create costume masterpieces for his celebrity clientele for events, premiers and their personal wardrobes. Keith has been featured in television and radio on shows like Entertainment Tonight, the Arsenio Hall Show and more. The result is a look is both sophisticated and sexy, with the drape and cut of gorgeous fabrics that always look fresh.    In this episode, she tells our Holly that her creations stem from art, her travels, and popular culture combine in unique prints and imaginative uses of color throughout her designs.    Innovation, too, finds its way into her work; she has often been the first to popularize a new technique or fabric, including sustainable fabrics such as denim made from recycled bottle caps and plant-based materials.    Nicole attended the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Apparel Design. For a year, she studied at L'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.    There she learned the art of fabric drapery and classical method of dressmaking. She has previously described the training sessions as “intense,” but the course gave much help in fabric manipulation, which soon became her signature style in her designs. Her outfits have been worn by Beyoncé Knowles, Angelica Huston, LeAnn Rimes, Jennifer Stone, Eva Longoria, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Hutton, Cindi Lauper and Sheryl Crow, among others.   “Nicole's vision is to create sustainable, accessible luxury and premium fashion and lifestyle products for eco-conscious, empowered women and their families who want to look their best, feel good about their consumer choices, and participate in making the world a better place.”   THE BRAND: The Nicole Miller brand is a global fashion and lifestyle brand headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1982, the iconic brand has grown to be one of the premier names in American fashion.    “With an emphasis on signature graphic prints, luxe fabrics and innovative silhouettes, the womenswear collection cultivates a look of elegance with a hint of rebellion while bringing accessible luxury to the modern woman. Known for her skillful draping and unique detailing, Nicole Miller designs every piece for the woman who wants to look and feel her best.”   In addition to its contemporary womenswear lines, the company has partnered with leading licensees in numerous lifestyle categories including handbags, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, denim, activewear, sleepwear, kids, fragrance and beauty, and home, among others, and can now be found online and in over 1500 specialty and department stores worldwide.   The Interview: Fresh off Hamptons Fashion Week 2022, where she was celebrated and honored as one of America's most highly regarded fashion icons for 40 years, Nicole Miller graces our podcast with her wit and wisdom regarding all things fashion!   From her deep American roots, to earning her degree at the Rhode Island Institute of Design and studying design in Paris, Holly uncovers all sorts of fascinating facts and insights about Nicole that most people would never know – all of which have blended to be Nicole's secret to fashion design success.   She is a force to be reckoned with; her signature style has traditionally been bold colors or black – with interesting cuts on clothes.    Her key concern has always been necklines, curves and proportion, with designs that are considered classic and sexy at the same time.    She creates cocktail dresses, lounge wear, wedding clothes and form-flattering gowns. She draws inspiration from a number of sources including contemporary art, cinema, 20th century cultures and architecture.   Nicole is first and foremost an artist and designer; she is also a skiier both on snow and the water. This outdoorsy and slightly competitive element is perhaps just one of the millions of layers that feed her enormous creativity. She also loves to cook and, of course, travel.   Listen to this episode to learn more:   From her start in the fashion industry to today, how has she been able to successfully manage and evolve her brand for 40 years?  What is Nicole Miller working on now? What does she see trending now? What fashion trend does she enjoy? What annoys her?  From owning brick-and-mortar stores all over the country to conducting online sales, how has she navigated running her company and kept up with sales trends? How was she able to expand to her brand into eyewear, jewelry, shoes, makeup, perfume, home goods - and now - a Rose'?  What is her favorite thing to wear? What does she do for fun? For inspiration?  What is next for Nicole Miller the brand?    For those of us who grew up with Nicole Miller, to anyone just discovering this marketing maven here, this intimate conversation is a fun and fascinating insider's look at the world of fashion and a legendary designer.    And you can only get it here.   FASHION CRIMES PODCAST “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed”   Hosted by your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz. www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

It just made it under the radar in 1984, making its budget back. A year later, it's likely to have been a PG-13 film and because of that, a huge flop. Ice Pirates' budget was cut in half during production and rewritten as a comedy.

Join all four Slasher goons as we discuss all the goey, gory fun of Grannies gorging on their ungrateful relatives (my alliteration skills are something to be envied). We talk about the somewhat deceptive title and whether demonology can count as hydrophobia (rabies). Filmed in Belgium at the Ingelmunster Castle in 1988 and written and directed by Emmanuel Kervyn, this is a dark, gritty take on a possession horror film. While this is not an Uncle Lloyd Troma film, it has its moments. Find out why you need to see this uncut and some of our favorite comedic moments, as well as why Mr. Bean, Bill Murray, Ghostbusters 2, Angelica Huston, Witches and Stephen King are completely appropriate topics for this discussion. In addition, we have a kick ass interview with Lew Temple, who you may know from The Walking Dead, Devil’s Rejects, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, 31 and a million other things. Truly, Lew is one of Jake's favorite interviews of all time. He is incredibly mindful, candid, and informative regarding his multiple careers, which lead him to the stage and silver screen. The 1990 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches remains a cult classic for those of us that grew up with it and a big part of that is definitely Angelica Huston's terrifying performance as The Grand High Witch. The film doesn't just traumatize its young viewers, though - it also empowers them. It's a world where even the most evil of forces can be conquered by the smallest of creatures. Not everyone was a fan, however, and Dahl himself wound up being one of its biggest detractors. He was so disappointed by the changes they made to his source text that it reportedly brought him to tears. That being the case, we can't help but wonder how he would have felt about the more recent adaptation that hit HBO Max late last year. Topics include: the banning of the original book, other actresses considered for The Grand High Witch, makeup vs cgi in the design of the title characters, the effect Angelica Huston had on 90s audiences, the setting of the 2020 version and the impact that had on the film's themes, the "limb controversy" sparked by the 2020 version, the post-production problems that delayed the release of the 1990 version, and much more! If I had any advice it would be literally don't listen to anybody because I think the only way to play that role is to give your version of it. "They do what they wanna do, say what they wanna say, live how they wanna live, play what they wanna play, dance how they wanna dance, kick and they slap a friend, The Addams Family!" Yes, MC Hammer provides the soundtrack to the live-action, big screen update of "The Addams Family." If anything, it's Cousin Itt's go-to jam while rolling around in that sweet ITT-Mobile. The 1991 film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, was a massive hit, capitalizing on some slick production design, inspired casting and a rather peculiar mix of slapstick and morbid humor. "Addams Family Values" in 1993 is a true rarity - a sequel that improves upon the original in almost every way, most importantly with the inclusion of a true antagonist in the form of a vamping Joan Cusack. It's also the movie where the Addams kids Wednesday and Pugsley terrorize a saccharine summer camp. The Old Millennials discuss the legacy of this 90s mini-franchise, the strange combination of gallows humor and kiddie cartoon antics, the sometimes exhausting simmer of Raul Julia and Angelica Huston as Gomez and Morticia, and the showstopping MVP performance of a young Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams. Also, is Thing a fun marvel of 90s-era special effects or a super annoying distraction? How does he (it? Itt?) get a job in an office mailroom anyway? Is the sentient severed hand a normal occurrence in this world? Also in this episode, Tyler (sorta) attends the New York Film Festival, and the 2019 animated reboot of "The Addams Family" is reviewed, though one of the hosts slept through a good 45 minutes of it. If you take away one lesson from "The Addams Family," it's this: Just because a family gets a new baby doesn't mean one of the other children has to die. At least not anymore. Also discussed in this episode: Nomadland (2020) The Boys in the Band (2020) Weathering With You (2020) Dick Johnson is Dead (2020) Wishmaster (1997)

This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt make a potentially catastrophic decision to go back to the theaters and watch Christopher Nolan's ‘Tenet'. Nolan's not quite time travel, sci-fi spy film is finally here after numerous delays due to Covid and his potentially reckless insistence that it be released in theaters. Granted our hosts did both go see it. So was it worth Matt and Chris potentially risking their lives? (Of course not.). But was it good? Then the Neo-Noir Marathon kicks off with Stephen Frears' ‘The Grifters'. Angelica Huston, John Cusack, and Annette Bening star in this story of con folks doing whatever they have to to survive. There's the always entertaining rundown of the big releases on physical media, featuring the Streaming and Straight to DVD Picks of the Week. The show then wraps up with Chris and Matt sharing their 5 Favorite Christopher Nolan Scenes! Which one of your favorites will make the cut, if any! The Witches (1990), Nicholas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, is traumatising af. A young boy and his grandmother as stumble onto a witch's convention. The witches are wicked and sadistic, and beneath their appearance as regular women are hideous, bald, toe-less creatures who hate children more than anything else. Their leader, the Grand High Witch (portrayed with maximum camp by Anjelica Huston) is the worst witch of them all. I'm joined by the wicked smart Tara Judah, Cinema Producer at the Watershed in Bristol and frequent collaborator of The Final Girls, to dig into some of the reasons why this film, and Angelica Huston's performance, really gets under your skin. We talk about Anjelica Huston's sexy, slinky and campy take on the Grand High Witch, the grotesque physicality of the witches, how this fits into Nicholas Roeg's other work and why it remains terrifying for both children AND adults. *** The Final Girls are a UK-based film collective exploring the intersections of horror film and feminism. The 1991 film, based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams originally debuting in The New Yorker in 1938 and the 1964 TV series produced by David Levy, is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld in his directing debut. That Film Stew's Luke and Nathan will revisit the supernatural black comedy film as well as go back and look at the comic strip debut of the odd wealthy aristocratic Addams clan. The Addams family (Angelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christina Ricci, Judith Malina) reconnect with who they believe to be a long-lost relative, Gomez's brother, Fester Addams (Christopher Lloyd), who is actually the adopted son of a loan shark intending to swindle the Addams clan out of their vast wealth and fortune.

I am so happy to welcome my friend Val, Charles Valentine to the show this week. We have been friends for many years after my cousin, Johnny Kris Johnson introduced us in LA. After knowing Val for about 5 years I received a call from him, requesting help when he learned his beloved Mom Margarita Promponas, was having memory issues and cognitive loss. Val returned to his native New York City to care for her, and has remained by her side for years. Today we had a lovely chat about Val's childhood, Margarita's career, and Val's career and how it changed when he decided to put his work on hold and return to Manhattan. Val speaks with so much love about his mom and her Alzheimer's. He has used many techniques to learn her new style of communication. He has figured out her many nuances of smiles, the look in her eyes , and things she says to help him understand her needs. Even as her Alzheimer's has progressed, she still loves to sing and dance. Margarita Promponas Throughout her life, Margarita was a singer and dancer who toured the country in her younger years. She was also extremely proud of her Native American heritage. Her son soon followed in her footsteps. Charles Valentino attended classes at the New York School of Ballet and the American Ballet Theater while a student at the High School of Performing Arts and he danced with the Harkness Ballet, the work was choreographed by Geoffrey Holder. He made his acting debut in The Me Nobody Knows, - played HUD in the Australian production of HAIR, and returned to the states for the national tour of the show. He had a hit single “I was born this way,” on Gaiee Records, released by Motown. In Bill Turner’s version of the Ziegfeld Follies Valentino portrayed the legendary Bert Williams. He also appeared on Komedy Tonight, an NBC-TV special. He was the scarecrow in the national touring company of the WIZ as well as the 84 revival on Broadway with Stephanie Mills. Most recently he acted on CSI Vegas. Val in the Theater production of THE WIZ His more recent work was with his close friend Joni Mitchell. He is featured on her special Painting with Words and Music. He was also featured in her video Come in from the cold, He sang on Ladies Man, from the album Wild Things Run Fast, and Yvette in English from the album Turbulent Indigo. Shell Burton, Johnny Kris Johnson, Val, & Joni Mitchell We spoke about how Val stays healthy as a caregiver and what he does for fun. His LA family is still close to his heart. He shares information about his deep love for friends Joni Mitchell and Anjelica Huston with whom he has sang and danced with so many times over the years. Angelica Huston writes in her book, Watch Me: “He twirls me around as if I were a silk scarf. I never set down unless he was dancing with his other favorite girl Joni Mitchell.” Val & Margarita today His LA family includes my cousin Johnny Kris, who Val calls his brother by another mother and Shell Burton. They have had a deep friendship for over 40 years. Val credits his family and friends for keeping him motivated, while caring for his mom. No matter who you are or how bright the lights shine on you, Alzheimer's can find you anywhere. I thank my friend for being on the show and lovingly sharing their story.

In 1986 audiences were dazzled by Captain EO, Michael Jackson’s 3-D movie spectacular at Disney’s Epcot Center in Florida. In the short 17 minute film, Michael Jackson and his ragtag group of rebels face off against an evil monster played by Angelica Huston who gets transformed into an egalitarian happy queen through the power of love, music and rainbows.Maybe it’s a bit simplistic, but Michael Jackson’s Rainbow loving Captain might be just what we need today to melt the hearts of tyrants everywhere and change the world. Our guest today is writer Robyn Pennacchia who has her pulse on all the hot topics as writer for Wonkette and other major online news sites.Robyn thinks we’re going about it all the wrong way when it comes to sexual equality- while everyone is debating on wether Aziz Ansari is guilty of being a jerk, nobody’s asking why he never picked up on social cues in the first place.Today we’re tackling all the gloomy, scary, nasty news that’s dividing the world and throwing some old fashioned Captain EO rainbow magic to turn the borg queen into Angelica Huston. The Borg from Star Trek were totally ripped off of Captain Eo. Let that sink in.Plus–➤ Is the Internet making you sick?➤ President Trump is trying to pass new rules that would allow healthcare works to deny care to HIV positive patients on religious grounds.➤ Twitter announces it will soon give its users tools to identify if they have been exposed to Russian propaganda bots.____________________FEAST OF FUN IS MADE POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF FABULOUS PEOPLE LIKE YOU.LISTEN TO THOUSANDS LEGENDARY SHOWS

166: James Joyce: "The Dead"

This week on StoryWeb: James Joyce’s short story “The Dead.” James Joyce’s “The Dead” is widely considered to be his best short story, called by the New York Times “just about the finest short story in the English language" and by T.S. Eliot as one of the greatest short stories ever written. The storyline is simple enough: a long-married Irish couple -- Gretta and Gabriel Conroy – attend a lavish dinner party thrown by his aunts in celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6). At the party, they each have a variety of conversations with assorted party guests, and Gabriel gives the evening’s post-dinner speech and leads the toast. As Gabriel and Gretta leave the party, the snow which had been lightly falling when they arrived at the beginning of the evening has become quite heavy. The closing scene finds Gretta asleep at their hotel while Gabriel stands at the window looking at the snow blanketing the city. Gabriel feels, in fact, that the snow is falling over the entirety of Ireland. Before falling asleep, Gretta had shared a memory about Michael Furey, the Irish activist lover of her youth. The reader is left to wonder whether Gabriel feels sorrow or acceptance over his wife’s confession that she still harbors feelings for her former lover. The ending, it would seem, is deliberately ambiguous. Indeed, the ending forces the reader to go back into the story looking for clues as to whether we’re supposed to read the ending as “happy” or “sad.” While “The Dead” is quite a famous story, less well known to the general public is its place as the culminating story in Joyce’s first book, a collection of short stories titled Dubliners. The collection was rejected 17 times over a 10-year period, with some of those rejections being based on what publishers and printers considered to be objectionable material. Finally published in 1914, this collection of 15 stories was Joyce’s first attempt to bring his native city to life. Of course, he would go on to write again and again about the Irish capital, most famously in his 1922 novel, Ulysses, which recounts one day in the life of Leopold Bloom as he makes his way through the streets of Dublin. But Dubliners was Joyce’s initial portrait of a city he both loved and hated. Each story in the collection features a different resident of Dublin, and each tells a different tale of the suffocating, dreary lives lived in this city. The characters presented here suffer from spiritual paralysis, squelched freedom, and ##. Joyce himself admitted that the stories capture some of the unhappiest moments of life. If you’re looking for uplifting literature, Dubliners is not the book for you. When read against the backdrop of these stories, “The Dead” – which is the finale of sorts to Dubliners – takes on an extra richness, an extra dimension. When read in this context, the story’s ambiguous ending becomes both easier and harder to read. Has Gabriel had an epiphany about the ways in which the dead live on in the memories of the living? Or has he succumbed – as the other characters in the Dubliners stories do – to a kind of paralysis, a numbing inability to be fully alive? Is the snow a beautiful phenomenon that brings all of Ireland together? Or is it a symbol of coldness, of death, a killing frost? As one source says, “In every corner of the country, snow touches both the dead and the living, uniting them in frozen paralysis. However, Gabriel’s thoughts in the final lines of Dubliners suggest that the living might in fact be able to free themselves and live unfettered by deadening routines and the past. Even in January, snow is unusual in Ireland and cannot last forever.” To consider the ending yourself, you’ll want to read this powerful story, which you can do for free at Project Gutenberg (and in fact, you can read the entire Dubliners collection here as well). If you prefer a hard copy, there’s an inexpensive Dover Thrift Edition. You might also want to watch John Huston’s 1987 film adaptation of “The Dead.” It starred his daughter Angelica Huston as Gretta Conroy and Donal McCann as her husband, Gabriel. Want to dig deeper? A helpful glossary of terms is available, and a digitized copy of the first edition of Dubliners can be found at Internet Archive. Richard Ellman’s biography of Joyce remains the standard, though its revised edition was published more than 30 years ago. Cornell’s James Joyce Collection is outstanding. You might also want to visit The James Joyce Centre – either online or in person in Dublin! Visit thestoryweb.com/joyce for links to all these resources and to watch the film’s ending. But first, take a listen as I read the opening pages of “The Dead.”   Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, was literally run off her feet. Hardly had she brought one gentleman into the little pantry behind the office on the ground floor and helped him off with his overcoat than the wheezy hall-door bell clanged again and she had to scamper along the bare hallway to let in another guest. It was well for her she had not to attend to the ladies also. But Miss Kate and Miss Julia had thought of that and had converted the bathroom upstairs into a ladies’ dressing-room. Miss Kate and Miss Julia were there, gossiping and laughing and fussing, walking after each other to the head of the stairs, peering down over the banisters and calling down to Lily to ask her who had come. It was always a great affair, the Misses Morkan’s annual dance. Everybody who knew them came to it, members of the family, old friends of the family, the members of Julia’s choir, any of Kate’s pupils that were grown up enough, and even some of Mary Jane’s pupils too. Never once had it fallen flat. For years and years it had gone off in splendid style as long as anyone could remember; ever since Kate and Julia, after the death of their brother Pat, had left the house in Stoney Batter and taken Mary Jane, their only niece, to live with them in the dark gaunt house on Usher’s Island, the upper part of which they had rented from Mr Fulham, the corn-factor on the ground floor. That was a good thirty years ago if it was a day. Mary Jane, who was then a little girl in short clothes, was now the main prop of the household, for she had the organ in Haddington Road. She had been through the Academy and gave a pupils’ concert every year in the upper room of the Antient Concert Rooms. Many of her pupils belonged to the better-class families on the Kingstown and Dalkey line. Old as they were, her aunts also did their share. Julia, though she was quite grey, was still the leading soprano in Adam and Eve’s, and Kate, being too feeble to go about much, gave music lessons to beginners on the old square piano in the back room. Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, did housemaid’s work for them. Though their life was modest they believed in eating well; the best of everything: diamond-bone sirloins, three-shilling tea and the best bottled stout. But Lily seldom made a mistake in the orders so that she got on well with her three mistresses. They were fussy, that was all. But the only thing they would not stand was back answers. Of course they had good reason to be fussy on such a night. And then it was long after ten o’clock and yet there was no sign of Gabriel and his wife. Besides they were dreadfully afraid that Freddy Malins might turn up screwed. They would not wish for worlds that any of Mary Jane’s pupils should see him under the influence; and when he was like that it was sometimes very hard to manage him. Freddy Malins always came late but they wondered what could be keeping Gabriel: and that was what brought them every two minutes to the banisters to ask Lily had Gabriel or Freddy come. “O, Mr Conroy,” said Lily to Gabriel when she opened the door for him, “Miss Kate and Miss Julia thought you were never coming. Good-night, Mrs Conroy.” “I’ll engage they did,” said Gabriel, “but they forget that my wife here takes three mortal hours to dress herself.” He stood on the mat, scraping the snow from his goloshes, while Lily led his wife to the foot of the stairs and called out: “Miss Kate, here’s Mrs Conroy.” Kate and Julia came toddling down the dark stairs at once. Both of them kissed Gabriel’s wife, said she must be perished alive and asked was Gabriel with her. “Here I am as right as the mail, Aunt Kate! Go on up. I’ll follow,” called out Gabriel from the dark. He continued scraping his feet vigorously while the three women went upstairs, laughing, to the ladies’ dressing-room. A light fringe of snow lay like a cape on the shoulders of his overcoat and like toecaps on the toes of his goloshes; and, as the buttons of his overcoat slipped with a squeaking noise through the snow-stiffened frieze, a cold, fragrant air from out-of-doors escaped from crevices and folds. “Is it snowing again, Mr Conroy?” asked Lily. She had preceded him into the pantry to help him off with his overcoat. Gabriel smiled at the three syllables she had given his surname and glanced at her. She was a slim, growing girl, pale in complexion and with hay-coloured hair. The gas in the pantry made her look still paler. Gabriel had known her when she was a child and used to sit on the lowest step nursing a rag doll. “Yes, Lily,” he answered, “and I think we’re in for a night of it.” He looked up at the pantry ceiling, which was shaking with the stamping and shuffling of feet on the floor above, listened for a moment to the piano and then glanced at the girl, who was folding his overcoat carefully at the end of a shelf. “Tell me, Lily,” he said in a friendly tone, “do you still go to school?” “O no, sir,” she answered. “I’m done schooling this year and more.” “O, then,” said Gabriel gaily, “I suppose we’ll be going to your wedding one of these fine days with your young man, eh?” The girl glanced back at him over her shoulder and said with great bitterness: “The men that is now is only all palaver and what they can get out of you.” Gabriel coloured as if he felt he had made a mistake and, without looking at her, kicked off his goloshes and flicked actively with his muffler at his patent-leather shoes. He was a stout tallish young man. The high colour of his cheeks pushed upwards even to his forehead where it scattered itself in a few formless patches of pale red; and on his hairless face there scintillated restlessly the polished lenses and the bright gilt rims of the glasses which screened his delicate and restless eyes. His glossy black hair was parted in the middle and brushed in a long curve behind his ears where it curled slightly beneath the groove left by his hat. When he had flicked lustre into his shoes he stood up and pulled his waistcoat down more tightly on his plump body. Then he took a coin rapidly from his pocket. “O Lily,” he said, thrusting it into her hands, “it’s Christmas-time, isn’t it? Just ... here’s a little....” He walked rapidly towards the door. “O no, sir!” cried the girl, following him. “Really, sir, I wouldn’t take it.” “Christmas-time! Christmas-time!” said Gabriel, almost trotting to the stairs and waving his hand to her in deprecation. The girl, seeing that he had gained the stairs, called out after him: “Well, thank you, sir.” He waited outside the drawing-room door until the waltz should finish, listening to the skirts that swept against it and to the shuffling of feet. He was still discomposed by the girl’s bitter and sudden retort. It had cast a gloom over him which he tried to dispel by arranging his cuffs and the bows of his tie. He then took from his waistcoat pocket a little paper and glanced at the headings he had made for his speech. He was undecided about the lines from Robert Browning for he feared they would be above the heads of his hearers. Some quotation that they would recognise from Shakespeare or from the Melodies would be better. The indelicate clacking of the men’s heels and the shuffling of their soles reminded him that their grade of culture differed from his. He would only make himself ridiculous by quoting poetry to them which they could not understand. They would think that he was airing his superior education. He would fail with them just as he had failed with the girl in the pantry. He had taken up a wrong tone. His whole speech was a mistake from first to last, an utter failure. Just then his aunts and his wife came out of the ladies’ dressing-room. His aunts were two small plainly dressed old women. Aunt Julia was an inch or so the taller. Her hair, drawn low over the tops of her ears, was grey; and grey also, with darker shadows, was her large flaccid face. Though she was stout in build and stood erect her slow eyes and parted lips gave her the appearance of a woman who did not know where she was or where she was going. Aunt Kate was more vivacious. Her face, healthier than her sister’s, was all puckers and creases, like a shrivelled red apple, and her hair, braided in the same old-fashioned way, had not lost its ripe nut colour. They both kissed Gabriel frankly. He was their favourite nephew, the son of their dead elder sister, Ellen, who had married T. J. Conroy of the Port and Docks. “Gretta tells me you’re not going to take a cab back to Monkstown tonight, Gabriel,” said Aunt Kate. “No,” said Gabriel, turning to his wife, “we had quite enough of that last year, hadn’t we? Don’t you remember, Aunt Kate, what a cold Gretta got out of it? Cab windows rattling all the way, and the east wind blowing in after we passed Merrion. Very jolly it was. Gretta caught a dreadful cold.” Aunt Kate frowned severely and nodded her head at every word. “Quite right, Gabriel, quite right,” she said. “You can’t be too careful.” “But as for Gretta there,” said Gabriel, “she’d walk home in the snow if she were let.” Mrs Conroy laughed. “Don’t mind him, Aunt Kate,” she said. “He’s really an awful bother, what with green shades for Tom’s eyes at night and making him do the dumb-bells, and forcing Eva to eat the stirabout. The poor child! And she simply hates the sight of it!... O, but you’ll never guess what he makes me wear now!” She broke out into a peal of laughter and glanced at her husband, whose admiring and happy eyes had been wandering from her dress to her face and hair. The two aunts laughed heartily too, for Gabriel’s solicitude was a standing joke with them. “Goloshes!” said Mrs Conroy. “That’s the latest. Whenever it’s wet underfoot I must put on my goloshes. Tonight even he wanted me to put them on, but I wouldn’t. The next thing he’ll buy me will be a diving suit.” Gabriel laughed nervously and patted his tie reassuringly while Aunt Kate nearly doubled herself, so heartily did she enjoy the joke. The smile soon faded from Aunt Julia’s face and her mirthless eyes were directed towards her nephew’s face. After a pause she asked: “And what are goloshes, Gabriel?” “Goloshes, Julia!” exclaimed her sister “Goodness me, don’t you know what goloshes are? You wear them over your ... over your boots, Gretta, isn’t it?” “Yes,” said Mrs Conroy. “Guttapercha things. We both have a pair now. Gabriel says everyone wears them on the continent.” “O, on the continent,” murmured Aunt Julia, nodding her head slowly. Gabriel knitted his brows and said, as if he were slightly angered: “It’s nothing very wonderful but Gretta thinks it very funny because she says the word reminds her of Christy Minstrels.” “But tell me, Gabriel,” said Aunt Kate, with brisk tact. “Of course, you’ve seen about the room. Gretta was saying....” “O, the room is all right,” replied Gabriel. “I’ve taken one in the Gresham.” “To be sure,” said Aunt Kate, “by far the best thing to do. And the children, Gretta, you’re not anxious about them?” “O, for one night,” said Mrs Conroy. “Besides, Bessie will look after them.”

Hey, Do You Remember...?

The phrase "nightmare fuel" gets tossed around pretty liberally these days, but back in the 90s there were few kids movies more befitting of that title than The Witches. Based on an already frightening book by Roald Dahl, this adaptation ratchets up the scares even further thanks to Angelica Huston's scenery-chewing performance and the incredible effects work of Jim Henson. Not everyone was a fan though. Dahl famously hated some of the alterations made to his source material (particularly the new ending) and thought that the filmmakers had missed the point entirely. It had been a long, long time since any of us had seen this and we were interested to find out if a more objective viewing would reveal that some of Dahl's complaints were valid or that this was still the pull no punches thrill ride we remembered. Topics include: key differences between the movie and the novel, how unprepared one of us was for Bruno's transformation sequence, whether or not the Grand High Witch knew the mice would be able to talk, how director Nicolas Roeg was able to capture the feeling of reading one of Dahl's books, our thoughts on the different endings, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
