Pleasant Grove School was significant in education and ethnic heritage. It is one of the oldest surviving purpose-built schools for black students in Clarendon County, South Carolina, and the only surviving pre-war school in the rule Alcolu community. The significance began in 1933 when the black community in Alcolu purchased land and built the school through volunteer fundraising efforts and ended with the school's closure in 1953. Pleasant Grove was a segregated school serving black children during the Jim Crow era and operated in the Clarendon County, white-run school, District. Functioning as a community hub, Pleasant Grove school had a basketball court a baseball field behind the building. The school closed in 1953, at that time 159 students were enrolled. The Pleasant Grove School along with other small real schools were replaced by South Carolina's school equalization program. A state effort to preserve segregated public education. Pleasant Grove School is emblematic of how African Americans pursued civil rights in the early 20th century within the structures of white supremacy. Carly and Malvina are joined by Tom Cheriyan to talk about the topic of "Laid Off Enablement".As inflation, supply-chain problems, and geopolitical turmoil curb revenue growth for tech companies, they have resorted to reducing headcount—some with massive layoffs—to bolster their balance sheets. Tech companies as big as Netflix have slashed jobs this year, with some citing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and others pointing to overhiring during periods of rapid growth. Silicon Valley giants who'd spent the last decade growing accustomed to progressively prosperous quarterly results have been forced to take a butcher knife to their headcount. For some, this was the first time they've ever had to cut staff. Enablement can also be on the chopping block... and on this episode we talk specifically around "laid off enablement" with Tom.About Tom Cheriyan:Thomas K. Cheriyan (also known as Tom) is a proven leader and innovator in the technology sector. He brings to the table years of experience in intellectual property, technology, engineering, thought leadership, strategic marketing, sales and business management. Nashville-based husband-and-wife duo Mike T. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana, folk, and blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first two acoustic full-length albums, they've earned a loyal following, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life. They don't take themselves, or the world, too seriously. Now poised to release their third full-length album, Double Down on a Bad Thing, The Twangtown Paramours are shifting gears to showcase a full band, electric, groove-oriented, upbeat, soul-infused, and retro blues sound. “We want people to have fun, to cheer up, to dance, and to start sporting a positive attitude, dammit,” says Mike. Hit songwriter, session musician, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country's major music centers, including NYC, L.A., Austin, and Nashville. He began learning classical and jazz guitar at age eight, studying under Leonid Bolotine, William Matthews, and Barry Galbraith, before earning degrees at Columbia in New York City and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He wrote a #1 platinum pop hit ranked the 2nd biggest-selling female ballad of all time in Korea, and occasionally plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Born in Washington D.C., lead singer MaryBeth Zamer was raised on a mix of opera and American songbook music, singing along to Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald, before discovering Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, and the blues in high school. A fixture in the Washington, D.C. club scene for years, MaryBeth performed with popular local cover band, Ignition and sang backup vocals for Eva Cassidy's band, Method Actor. “Eva was a huge influence on my singing style,” MaryBeth says. “She taught me to go beyond having fun and hitting the right notes, to sing in a way that conveys real emotion.” MaryBeth and Mike met and started dating in 2009, while both were working on separate musical projects. “The relationship came first,” says MaryBeth, “but I kept hearing songs he'd written that I loved, and I wanted to add my own vocal spin to them. I felt like I could interpret and deliver Mike's songs the way he intended them to be.” The Twangtown Paramours released their debut self-titled album via Inside Edge Records just a year later in 2010, a well-received, pop-infused folk album that rose to #11 on the Folk charts. In 2012, they released their second full-length project, The Promise of Friday Night, a narrative-driven, acoustic folk album that hit #2 on the Folk charts, #150 on the Americana charts, and #7 on Deep Roots Magazine's top 50 albums of 2012. In the following years, the pair became three-time finalists at the Kerrville New Folk Competition in Kerrville, TX and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson, TX. They also had the honor to open for major acts such as Joe Ely, Claire Lynch, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Bryan E. Miller is a creative film composer whose goal is to help maximize the emotional impact of visual media by creating powerful, evocative film scores. Bryan studied at the Grove School of Music, and UCLA Extensions Film scoring program. Early in his career Bryan honed his craft by assisting composer Mark Waters on more than 50 episodes for Disney and orchestrated and conducted for composer Mychael Danna who has since won an Academy Award. Bryan has composed and produced music for hundreds of projects including movies, television, commercials, documentaries, and DVD featurettes. His clients include Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, CBS, ABC, A&E and The Style Network. You've probably heard his compositions in American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Boston Legal, The Big Bang Theory, Next Top Model, The Shield, General Hospital, Southland, and Access Hollywood, or listened to his signature music for the Comcast Logo. It was based on his versatility in multiple musical genres and his passion for interesting and creative challenges that Bryan was chosen to compose the score for the new feature film by New York Times best-selling author-turned-filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza - America: Imagine the World without Her. Produced by Academy Award-winner Gerald Molen (Schindler's List, Jurassic Park), America was a hit in the box office, becoming the sixth highest grossing political documentary in history. Bryan has signed with Milan Records, which released the America soundtrack album. Though primarily a composer of dramatic and narrative films, Miller loves the documentary genre, and frequently takes time to compose music for charities and humanitarian organizations like St. Jude Children's Hospital, World Vision, Best Friends Animal Rescue, and The Museum of Tolerance. Bryan's view: “It's a wonderful feeling when you can be part of a passionate team that wants to bring positive change to the world.” Bryan E. Miller is a rising star in Hollywood who is refreshingly un-Hollywood. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Bryan now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and 3 children. Bryan is equal parts pragmatist and idealist. He gets the job done in an efficient and ego-free way, all the while striving to create music that “stirs the soul” and “connects us to something bigger than ourselves.”
