Happy Monday! Sam is BACK from vacation! He and Emma speak with Ganesh Sitaraman, law professor at Vanderbilt University, to discuss his recent book Why Flying Is Miserable: And How To Fix It. First, Sam and Emma touch on how former President Trump's 2024 campaign is going after handily defeating Nikki Haley in South Carolina on Saturday, and what he is choosing to focus on in order to win back skeptical independent women voters in the suburbs: by, as he does to Fox's Bret Baier, re-litigating the 2020 election of course! They then reflect upon how Trump won't actually need that support because, as he said at a gathering of black conservatives in South Carolina this weekend, black people will vote for him because they know what it's like to be indicted and charged with crimes. After that, Sam and Emma talk to Ganesh and discuss how the system for airlines that began in the 1930's in the U.S. came about, and how it differed and was similar to other public entities like the U.S. Post Office. Ganesh expands upon how Congress struggled with implementation of the airline industry and whether over or under-regulating the industry would lead to too much or not enough competition. Sam asks Ganesh if, as per the Constitution in how it enumerates capabilities for the Post Office, whether lawmakers could have invoked that authority in the Constitution to reflect on air travel, a "Post Office of the skies" if you will. Later, Ganesh gets into how airports and ticket pricing factored into the development of U.S. air travel, and how quality of travel precipitously declined after deregulation took effect on the industry in the late 1970's. This then led to, in the 1980's, many mergers and bankruptcies in the sector, and a return to how the industry was constructed in the 1930's, only without any robust regulations to guardrail anything. Ganesh makes the case for a "public option" for airlines to reinstate some competition as well as to discourage any future bailouts of the industry, as well as why he believes in that option more than re-regulating the industry entirely. And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma discuss congressional Republicans and presidential campaigners running away from Alabama's IVF decision, with Florida Rep. Byron Donalds ensuring that he supports IVF for the purpose of "breeding great families," as well as Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt refusing to answer whether Trump actually cares about IVF or not (she doesn't know). James Comer tells NewsMax's Rob Schmitt about the "micro piece" (pause) that is now-disgraced FBI informant Alexander Smirnov's testimony about the Biden's dealings in Ukraine, Joe Rogan and Dr. Phil freak out about the NYPD city dancers, and the MR Crew turns to where Joe Rogan, really, goes for his research: Bret Weinstein & Tucker Carlson, solemnly talking about the dissolution of "the West." The king watched the hand as it wrote.

Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Abdul Alkalimat, professor of African American Studies & library and information science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to discuss his book The History of Black Studies. First, Emma runs through updates on the rising Gaza death count, the crippling of Nasser Hospital, the expansion of Israel's ground offensive, Biden issuing another ceasefire veto, another ICJ case, Russia's recent offensive in Ukraine, Trump's abortion ban, EV sales, forever chemicals, Wisconsin's gerrymandering, and Pakistan's election, before diving into Fox's coverage of Trump's recent massive fine from the state of New York. Professor Abdul Alkalimat then joins, diving right into the founding of Black studies in the US over the 1960s and 70s, serving as a professionalization and a manifestation of a long history of Black intellectual tradition and social movements that US higher education and academia all but ignored. Expanding on this, Professor Alkalimat dives into the convergence of disciplines in the creation of Black studies, picking up on the tradition of black intellectual history, and taking advantage of a wide range of subjects in their attempt to best understand and interpret the Black experience. Next, Emma and Abdul tackle the rediscovery of Black intellectual history in the academic context through the creation of Black studies, bringing to light the incredible educational power of social movements – from Black Power and Civil Rights to New Communism and the Women's Movement – to raise new questions about society and redefine how we thought about race, both domestically and internationally. After walking through his concepts of deficit, difference, and dependency that undergird racism in the US, Professor Alkalimat touches once again on how Black studies works to redefine, recontextualize, and challenge mainstream notions of US and global society, as well as the Black experience itself, before wrapping up the interview with the primary challenges facing the current era in the struggle for Black self-determination. Emma also watches recent statements from Lula da Silva on Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza with the West's support. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Mitch from Houston about the liberal fatigue seen in response to both the COVID-19 Pandemic and Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, Hannah from San Diego discusses her experiences with discrimination as a Jewish college student, and NPR and NBC join hands to present Trump's new, incredibly rational 16-week abortion ban. Sam and Emma speak with Lainey Newman, research assistant at Harvard Law School, to discuss her recent book Rust Belt Union Blues: Why Working-Class Voters Are Turning Away from the Democratic Party, co-authored with Theda Skocpol. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's bombing of the Palestinians taking refuge in Rafah, Biden and Trump's varying support for war, the election to fill George Santos' seat, the House GOP goes after Mayorkas… again, Pakistani election results wrap up, and Matt Gaetz's ethics hearings continue, also touching on Bibi Netanyahu's recent appearance on Fox News to touch on Israel's ongoing war against “barbarism” and to save “civilization.” Lainey Newman then joins, diving right into her research methods compiling and analyzing archival, interview, and ethnographic data exploring the political evolution of the Rust Belt's “union-man” archetype – also touching connection to the region. Next, Newman dives into her exploration of the influence of unions as third places and integral parts of community infrastructure in the Rust Belt, tackling the role they played throughout much of the 20th Century, playing host to community events, local organizing, religious affairs, as well as disseminating important news and political developments, alongside its role as a collective bargaining unit. Moving forward, Lainey walks Sam and Emma through the disappearance of this third-place over the second half of the century, with the collapse of steel regulation and rise of neoliberalism obliterating the union jobs and general population of the Rust Belt, and thus killing the major progressive counterweight to conservative community institutions and third places. After tackling the role of unions in bolstering race relations, and the role the Democratic Party played in the downfall of unionism, Newman wraps up with a quick assessment of union politics heading into the 2024 election. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the mass ongoing repression of Palestinian sympathies in Israel, Andrew from Chicago explores the future of housing reform in Chicago and beyond, and RFK gets inter-Kennedy pushback over the use of his family's pictures in a Super Bowl ad. Ehab from Tucson parses through the difficult questions of voting amid Biden's support for Israel's genocide – alongside the likelihood of any institutional awareness – Sarah from Chicago explores the influence of Israel's occupation of Palestine on Islamophobia in the US, and Donald Trump flexes on those parasitic NATO allies we have.
