Nvidia (NVDA) shares rose, then fell, after the company posted earnings that beat expectations, but included an $8 billion adjustment due to export uncertainty with China. Despite this Olivier Blanchard remains bullish on Nvidia's A.I.-driven growth prospects. He notes that the company's dominant share of the data center GPU market, combined with a strong comeback in its gaming segment, position it well for continued success.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Alibaba (BABA) shares are down after earnings which Melissa Armo says "looks like a short to me" adding "it's really hard to think about buying this" amid rockier U.S.-China trade relations. She's bearish on BABA and JD.com (JD). Olivier Blanchard says it's been a tough quarter considering macroeconomic conditions and the trade war, but he still "moderately hopeful" in the Chinese economy which would benefit stocks like BABA. He points out the A.I. exposure for BABA and how that factors into forward expectations.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Olivier Blanchard considers Huawei's new A.I. chip a "significant threat" that Nvidia (NVDA) has time to react to. The biggest headwind Olivier sees for the A.I. giant is license restrictions on its H20 chips, which Huawei took advantage of. He turns to the next steps Nvidia can take to ensure it holds leadership in the A.I. space.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Nvidia (NVDA) will have to pay $5.5 billion for licenses to export its H20 chips, while AMD Inc. (AMD) will pay $800 million. Olivier Blanchard says these companies can absorb these costs without issue if it weren't for the "snowball" of other developments these companies are managing. Olivier believes the tariff picture can be even more complicated if China is more "patient" with negotiations. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Olivier Blanchard says Amazon's (AMZN) reach into agentic A.I. is a "smart move" that will face competition against Alphabet (GOOGL) and Meta Platforms (META). He adds that the ecommerce giant faces a headwind in not being known as an A.I. company despite its heavy tech integration. Olivier Blanchard notes rockiness in the chip trade but expects it to smooth out with the world's growing reliance on A.I. He anticipates companies to use the technology in ways that improve employee efficiency. He maintains bullishness on giants like Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD Inc. Qualcomm (QCOM) is rallying Thursday morning after a strong earnings report. Olivier Blanchard from the Futurum Group thinks the changes the company has made over the last 10 years puts it in a strong position to continue to rally. The use of chips in all cars, not just electric vehicles, means that Qualcomm will continue to see growth. Meanwhile, Arm Holdings (ARM) investors should not be scared off by its post-earnings drop as A.I. moves into the chips for phones and computers. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Deposit runs have led to the collapse of three U.S. banks this year, but another concern is building on the horizon. According to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, commercial real estate is the area most likely to cause problems for lenders. U.S. banks have experienced historically low loan defaults over the last few years due to low interest rates and the flood of stimulus money unleashed during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Federal Reserve has hiked rates to fight inflation, which has changed the landscape. Commercial buildings in some markets, including tech-centric San Francisco, may take a hit as remote workers are reluctant to return to offices. In this episode of The Higher Standard, Chris and Saied examine this news and determine the effect it will have on the economy as a whole. They discuss an academic paper from economist Olivier Blanchard and former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, who guided the central bank and the U.S. economy through the Great Recession, in which they argue that central bankers still have work to do to bring down inflation.Chris and Saied look at news that San Francisco has the largest sublease market of any U.S. metropolitan area, with 7.2% of its overall office inventory available for sublease, having doubled that figure since late 2019.They also offer some thoughts on the rise of asset managers, private equity funds and insurers, as the regional banking crisis supercharges the expansion of these non-bank lenders into areas such as providing consumer car loans and mortgages, or financing the construction of buildings.Join Chris and Saied for this fascinating and informative conversation.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Why the debt ceiling 'crisis' is a non-event.Private equity and how it differs from real estate syndicators.Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs): a new way to take companies public. And so much more...Resources:"Here's how much emergency savings you need amid economic uncertainty, according to financial advisors" (CNBC via Instagram)"Fed Chair Powell says rates may not have to rise as much as expected to curb inflation" (CNBC)"Jamie Dimon warns souring commercial real estate loans could threaten some banks" (CNBC)"Analysis: Private equity steps up lending as U.S. banks pull back" (Reuters)"Former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke says there's more work ahead to control inflation" (CNBC)"What's the right emergency fund amount?" Right now, the economy is running hot. Inflation is high, and central banks are pushing up interest rates to fight it. But before the pandemic, economies around the world were stuck in a different rut: low inflation, low interest rates, low growth. In 2013, Larry Summers unearthed an old term from the Great Depression to explain why the economy was in this rut: secular stagnation. The theory resonated with Olivier Blanchard, another leading scholar, because he had made similar observations himself. Larry and Olivier would go on to build a case for why secular stagnation was a defining theory of the economy and why government policies needed to respond to it. They helped reshape many people's understanding of the economy, and suggested that this period of slow growth and low interest rates was here to stay for a long time. But today, Larry and Olivier are no longer the duo they used to be. As inflation has spiked worldwide, interest rates have followed suit. Earlier this year, Larry announced that he was no longer on the secular stagnation train. Olivier, meanwhile, believes we're just going through a minor blip and will return to a period of low interest rates within the near future. He doesn't see the deep forces that led to a long-run decline in interest rates as just vanishing. Who's right? The future of the global economy could depend on the answer.Help support Planet Money by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.

In the fight to combat high inflation, the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank have embarked on aggressive tightening paths. But how much damage to economic growth will they ultimately have to inflict to win this fight? In the latest episode of Exchanges at Goldman Sachs, Jan Hatzius, Goldman Sachs' chief economist and head of Goldman Sachs Research, and Olivier Blanchard, C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute, debate whether the Fed can rebalance an overheated labor market — a key requirement to tame inflation — without a sharp rise in unemployment. This episode is based off of Goldman Sachs' latest Top of Mind report.
