This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to unlock performance and retain great talent. My guest is Antony Thompson, Co-Founder and former CEO of Loopin.  Antony has spent a lifetime in service of others, first as a Royal Marine Commando and then as a business consultant focused on creating incredible value for the teams he worked with. After leaving the Marines, he spent time as a management consultant; fulfilling the role of a reporting manager on a £5bn infrastructure portfolio. In May 2018, he founded Vanguard Global Solutions focused on delivering people strategies, encompassing coaching, workshops, and programs.  But then COVID kicked in - completely disrupting their business model. And that event sparked the idea behind Loopin, which he and his co-founder Ben, founded in June 2020.  Their 2030 mission: provide 1 million managers the ability to reduce burnout and attrition in their teams. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Antony to my podcast. We explore the growing challenge so burnout and attrition in the market and why traditional solutions can only help us come so far. Antony then shares what needs to change and why given their experiences from the Marines and the characteristics they've uncovered about what creates high-performing overachievers.  He talks about the lessons learned from the pivot they needed to pull through. And lastly, he shares what it takes to build a successful startup and why ego doesn't have a place in that.  Here's one of his quotes One of the things which we conceptualize was this bubble idea where this bubble would rise to the top of the platform. We said, look, that's the most important thing that you as the business leader need to do today because that's the thing that's going to turn the needle. And it was with that mindset: It's all about getting the quality in engagement, surveys don't work. They're lagging indicators. Maybe there's an opportunity to create something which is a leading indicator that gives you some foresight. We're very good at doing financial forecasting. But what if we could do people or human forecasting… During this interview, you will learn four things: Why are we leaning too much toward lagging indicators when we should be focused on leading indicators What the three ingredients are for high performance, and which one, in particular, to double down on How to separate the false signs of success from the real ones How to go about having the courage to have the really difficult conversations For more information about the guest from this week: Antony Thompson Website: Loopin Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. 16 Things High Performing Organizations Do Differently: Don Yaeger on Great Teams

Blanchard Leaderchat Podcast

In this episode, Don Yaeger, author of Great Teams: 16 Things High Performing Organizations Do Differently, discusses his research on why some teams win when others fail. “My research of the business and sports world uncovered sixteen things that successful teams do, and I grouped them into four main pillars,” explains Yaeger. (As you listen, you’ll realize the names of the four pillars create the acronym TEAM.) Pillar One: Targeting Purpose “Every team has to have a shared sense of purpose,” says Yaeger, “but this is more a belief than a statement. A high performing team feels a shared purpose in their bones. It becomes part of who they are as a team.” You may have heard about Simon Sinek’s Why concept (if you know the answer to why your work matters, you will enjoy your work more.) The concept behind this pillar is very similar to Sinek’s concept, but it applies to entire teams, not individuals. The sense of purpose for a team identifies who they are serving and why that matters. Whether in business, sports, military operations, or day-to-day life, teams show up more positively when they share a sense of purpose. Pillar Two: Effective Management Yaeger explains that team leaders need to be committed to developing others. To build a team to its full potential, a leader should recruit people for a cultural fit and then train them for skills. Profit and loss statements are the roadmap to the future for many companies—but Yeager suggests having the right people in the right positions is a better way to ensure that people and teams are constantly developing and improving. The most successful teams have markers on their roadmap of performance defined as developmental goals, not monetary goals. Pillar Three: Activating Efficiency This pillar focuses on a willingness to not just accept change but embrace it, so the team can be successful even in transition. “It is important to build a culture of mentorship. Leaders do that by making their expectations clear and praising good performance that supports the culture. Every member of the team must act as a mentor when necessary. It isn’t the job of only the team leader to be a mentor—everyone needs to own that role.” An especially good example of this pillar is for leaders to be fully engaged in all meetings or practices to let the team know their performance is the most important thing at that moment. In fact, Yaeger recommends that leaders be either fully engaged and present or fully absent. If a leader isn’t prepared to be there 100 percent, they might as well not show up at all. Pillar Four: Mutual Direction Great teams have a true sense of what they ultimately want and what it will take to get there. A football team focuses on the fourth quarter and a business team focuses on the completion of a project. Both teams focus on the finish. By preparing all along the way, great teams build a culture where they can win even in critical situations. Most important, Yaeger urges team leaders to design the culture they want. “By design or by default, your team will have a culture. So design it the way you want it to be and focus on creating and maintaining it. The best teams aren’t necessarily the ones with the best talent—they are the ones with the strongest culture.” About The Ken Blanchard Companies The Ken Blanchard Companies is the global leader in management training. New Year’s Evolution It's New Years. Want to avoid setting the same ole' “just add water, have shame in 3 weeks" resolutions? This is the episode for you! It’s that time of year where many of us make some resolutions. But we have a love-hate relationship with New Year’s Resolutions, and think it might be a time to rethink how we make them.   Why is that important for business? What you measure will determine so much about your business. New Year’s is a great time to notice what and how you measure. Resolutions are often large by their very nature, yet breaking them down into chunks is often much more effective. It’s like what Coach Krzyzewski at Duke University said about winning a game with a 20 point deficit: instead of focusing on the seemingly insurmountable spread, think about winning just the next 5 minutes. Once you string together some 5 minute wins, the bigger deficit will take care of itself. With resolutions, often the goals themselves are laced with shame to begin with. Like with diet, sometimes it is more effective to focus on adding in the good, not so much about what you need to take out. When you focus only on what is not working, it fuzzes out the system. Focus on what you need to be adding more of in your life instead.   The new year offers the opportunity of a fresh start. Instead of feeling like a failure in 3 weeks, setting looser goals based on a theme or a guidepost – a litmus test for your decisions that year – can be more effective. And always remember to ask: How do I want to feel? What do I want to feel more of? Not in the moment, necessarily, or you may end up having eight more shortbread cookies. But in your life – what do you want more of? If you are so focused on the goal and not on the feeling that you want, you might miss a better opportunity to achieve that feeling you are seeking. This isn’t about doing away with resolutions, but right sizing them, bring some kindness and grace to them, focusing on the right parts (not numerical achievement, but how you want to feel) and finding a rhythm of measurement that feeds you, as well as the right kind of support. Support more like that described in Winning with Accountability: The Secret Language of High-Performing Organizations – accountability not as punishment, but as an opportunity to set self up to not go off the rails in first place; tether back to what you want, because you will get off track.   What story do you want to tell? So we told you our story – now it’s time to tell us yours! Go to SoHeresMyStory.com and share your story.   Want to Connect?
