“New Girl Syndrome” The New Zealand-born Lisa Crawley has fearlessly created art and then just as fearlessly followed that art all over the world. From a small town in Japan to a cruise ship to Los Angeles, Crawley is not afraid of the hard miles and she's bravely traversed the globe performing wherever she can. Armed with a luminescent voice and melodic muscle, Crawley's work suggests a dreamy mix of Amy Winehouse and Bic Runga. Over the years she appeared in the Tony-Award winning musical Once, opened for Paul Weller, Simply Red and Suzanne Vega, she's performed with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and she's had her work appear in everything from The Last Days Of Capitalism to Nancy Drew to Good Trouble. Her new EP New Girl Syndrome is an infectious and stirring song cycle that's contemplative, probing and unreasonably catchy. Lisa's a really funny person and her humor is deadpan and sly and it's a fascinating counterpoint to her emotive and affecting songbook. www.lisacrawley.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Bic Runga is one of New Zealand's iconic performers – dazzling audiences since the release of her first single in 1996. She went on to reach international fame, as well as winning the most New Zealand Music Awards by an individual ever. Runga is currently on the road as part of the Greenstone Summer Concert Tour, performing alongside Cold Chisel, Icehouse, and Everclear. The first show of the tour was this past weekend in Queenstown, and Runga told Ryan Bridge that she's having ‘such a good time' on the road. “It was really cool to meet these guys on the road,” she said of the other performers. “They're all legends and, y'know, they're all lovely.” Runga has brought her family along on this tour, and she says that it's definitely a military operation trying to keep everyone organised. “I'm trying to get on stage and someone's asking me where their sock is.” “It's cool to have them, but there's... it's just an extra layer of stuff to, y'know, find and wash,” Runga told Bridge with a laugh. Most people stream music nowadays, but despite having close to half a million monthly streams on Spotify, Runga says that it's not the main way artists make their money. “Streaming is a bit stacked up against you,” she said. “It has been harder and harder for musicians to make money out of things like that, but, y'know, I guess that's why we tour." “You have to really love doing it, y'know, I still do it because it's super fun and I can't do anything else.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Where is TIm Finn today? What's the relationship between Tim Finn and Neil Finn? Who did Tim FInn replace in Fleetwood Mac? Answers to all of these questions and more: Tim Finn is renowned for his work with Split Enz, Crowded House, and as a solo artist. His musical journey began in New Zealand, where he developed a passion for music at a young age, inspired by the Beatles and other rock legends. Finn's early years were marked by a relentless pursuit of creativity and a drive to innovate within the music scene. In 1972, Tim Finn co-founded Split Enz with Phil Judd. The band's early days were characterised by their eclectic and theatrical style, which combined elements of art rock, progressive rock, and new wave. Split Enz quickly gained a reputation for their eccentric performances and unique sound, setting them apart in the music industry. Their breakthrough came with the release of "True Colours" in 1980, featuring the hit single "I Got You." This song catapulted them to international fame, topping charts in Australia and New Zealand and gaining significant airplay worldwide. Split Enz continued to enjoy success with several albums that included hits like "One Step Ahead" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat." Tim Finn's vocals and innovative songwriting were central to the band's success, helping to establish Split Enz as pioneers in the New Zealand music scene. In the mid-80s, Tim joined his brother Neil Finn in Crowded House. He initially contributed to the band's second album which featured tracks like "Into Temptation" and "I Feel Possessed." Tim's involvement added depth to the band's sound, blending his creative prowess with Neil's to produce a series of compelling and emotionally resonant songs. Although his tenure with Crowded House was brief, it was marked by a creative synergy that significantly influenced the band's music. Tim's solo career began in earnest with the release of "Escapade" in 1983. The album was a commercial success, featuring hits like "Fraction Too Much Friction." His solo work allowed him to explore different musical styles and lyrical themes and subsequent albums continued to highlight his innovative approach to music and songwriting. In addition to his solo albums, Tim Finn released "The View Is Worth The Climb" in 2011. His solo work has been characterised by a blend of pop, rock, and folk influences, reflecting his diverse musical background and enduring creative spirit. Tim Finn's collaborative efforts have also been a significant part of his career. He has worked with a range of artists, including Phil Manzanera, https://manzanera.com/new/Eddie Rayner, and Bic Runga. These collaborations have allowed him to explore different musical landscapes and experiment with new sounds, enriching his already diverse body of work. The Finn Brothers project, a collaboration with his brother Neil, resulted in the release of two acclaimed albums. These showcased the brothers' close musical relationship and their ability to create deeply personal and resonant songs. Tracks like "Only Talking Sense" and "Won't Give In" highlighted their unique chemistry and songwriting prowess. Throughout his career, Tim Finn has been recognised for his melodic craftsmanship and lyrical depth. His contributions to music, both as a solo artist and as part of iconic bands like Split Enz and Crowded House, have left an indelible mark on the industry. Finn's ability to blend introspective lyrics with diverse musical styles has inspired generations of musicians and continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This week I chat to producer, artist, songwriter, Abigail Knudson. We discuss her journey through music from her initial biases against pop music, an eye opening moment hearing “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West and how she likes to produce. Also known by her artist name MISSY, Abigail has worked with artists such as Bic Runga, Mazbou Q, Vikae and more. She's recently released a new album entitled “Major Arcana” and we get an inside look at how she created one of the lead singles, “Quarter Life Crisis” talking about how sometimes stock plug-ins are the key to creativity.

New Zealand music industry icon and Te Reo champion Hinewehi Mohi has been recognised for her dedication to her music and culture. The Waipukurau-born singer and producer has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) for her services to Māori, music and television in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.Mohi said the recognition is a wonderful tribute to all those who've supported her, whanau, hapū, iwi and all the champions of Te Reo Māori who've been working hard to revitalise the language."Through music I have found a platform to really provide an access point for people to be able to access the language and the culture and experience it that way," she said. The 57-year-old has been an integral part of New Zealand's music industry since the 1990s and is well-known for her performance of the national anthem in Māori at the 1999 Rugby World Cup in Twickenham. It was the first time this had been done at an international rugby match, leading into the now customary practice to sing the anthem both in Te Reo Māori and English.Mohi is also an award-winning television and music producer, but says her real passion project is Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, which she co-founded in 2004 for people with disabilities. She first experienced music therapy in London in 1999 when she was promoting her music and singing the national anthem with her daughter Hineraukatauri who has cerebral palsy.Mohi said her daughter acts as constant inspiration.Raukatauri now has around 600 people receiving music therapy each week in its three centres in Hawke's Bay, Auckland and Whangārei.Mohi, her daughter and Auckland-born husband moved back to Hawke's Bay from Auckland four-and-a-half years ago, and said she loves being home.It was at her Havelock North home that she produced the 2019 album Waiata/Anthems, supporting well-known musicians including Six60, Drax Project Stan Walker and Bic Runga to re-record their hit songs in Te Reo Māori. She said she loved being able to help those artists connect with the language."Through that they connected to the culture and their own whakapapa, their own genealogy and heritage," Mohi said."For pakeha artists that have done the same thing, it's really empowered them as well to feel whole and complete as New Zealanders."Waiata/Anthems debuted at number one on the New Zealand top 40 chart and achieved gold record sales. She said it's been amazing to see the likes of Drax Project and Six60 perform hit songs in Māori to live crowds, around the country and on stage in Hawke's Bay.Hinewehi Mohi also became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours List.text by Louise Gould, Hawkes Bay Today
Alanna Cherote; a guitar, a woman and a story to tell…sometimes that’s all you need. If there was a swingers party and the keys in the infamous bowl belonged to Johnny Cash, Sheryl Crow, Bic Runga and Alanis Morissette the by-product of that would be the cool vocal stylings of Ms Cherote.
Some of New Zealand's most legendary musicians are headlining a variety concert this summer. The Kiwi Concert Party will take place at Auckland's Villa Maria Winery on January 23, 2021, and promises to be a two-hour entertainment with something for everyone. Tim Finn, Bic Runga, the Topp Twins and the Hātea Kapa Haka group are headlining. Runga, Finn, and the Topps will perform live on stage together and will also perform each other's songs.Finn says in a statement the concert will be a great way to "shift the mood" of the past year."I thought after everything we'd been through together in 2020, a mix of music and comedy would be a great tonic," Finn said. The variety show will also feature singer-songwriter Reb Fountain, who will open the show, plus DJ Manuel Bundy."The idea for a Kiwi Concert Party starring Bic Runga, the Topp Twins and myself felt both classic and timely. Add into that mixture the Hātea Kapa Haka group with their amazing vocal harmonies, a musical director of the calibre of Karl Stevens, acclaimed songwriter Reb Fountain and iconic DJ Manuel Bundy and you have a unique and celebratory event. We will share the stage and shift the mood, reminding everybody what a special place NZ is. Have a sing, have a laugh, have a dance and a drop of the doings. There’s no doubt that, for a tiny island nation at the bottom of the world, New Zealand does incredibly well on the world music stage. The universe is ending. Not imminently, but entropy increases, and only disorder awaits. Humanity will be gone long before that, but here we are. This file is a recording of a 40 minute segment of time in a Wellington bedroom; meaningless in the universal sense, but as it was happening it meant everything to us. So I reckon it'd be pretty bloody cruel to expect much of that chat to be about renowned shit-show Bad Moms 2, alright? Get it together. A sweet little spider also made a memorable appearance. Wanderlust. A strong desire to travel. One of the key qualities that so many of my inspired and inspiring podcast guests and I connect with and upon on a regular basis. The insatiable urge to explore, meet new people, learn about the world, the people in it and ourselves... to feel like we're moving forward and constantly evolving... as individuals... as professionals, no matter what industry we work in... Just to feel alive! And this is where Dan Kelly and I connected… A career musician who tours with the likes of Bic Runga, Paul Kelly, Augie March, Casey Chambers & more, today we delve into wonderful, ranging chats from Leonard Cohen, cliff swims and 10 day getaways on the Island of Hydra, Dan Kelly’s Polish grandparents and an English mum who settled in Australia at the price of a £10 note, Dan Kelly's childhood and the contrasts of growing up between South Australia and the harsh realities of the Gold Coast in the 80s, the techniques we use individually dealing with the current age of overstimulation and the anxiety it brings, the meaning of 'Leisure Panic’ and the stories to tell behind the music.Softly spoken and thoughtful, Dan Kelly left me pondering how I roll across the years of this lifetime, the events that have shaped my outlook, tenacious approach and the people that guide my own moral compass. This is a beauty… Enjoy!http://dankelly.com.au/https://twitter.com/dankellysongshttps://soundcloud.com/abcmusic/never-stop-the-rot/s-pWKlWhttps://itunes.apple.com/au/album/leisure-panic/id1029022838https://www.facebook.com/dankellymusic?fref=tshttps://instagram.com/dankellysongs/Hit Hot & Delicious up on social media too! @hotndelicioushttps://twitter.com/hotndelicioushttps://instagram.com/hotndelicious/www.facebook.com/HotnDeliciouswww.youtube.com/hotndeliciousrecords For 'Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet' podcast articles, travel blog series and more head to: www.hotndelicious.wordpress.com
