As South Africans enjoy the last few days of the holiday season, power utility, Eskom kicked off the new year with the announcement of the return of stages two and three electricity rolling blackouts. The power utility has cited a number of reasons for the decision including intensified maintenance, the loss of six generating units, as well as three- generating units not returning online as had been anticipated. This comes just days after Eskom announced the synchronisation of a new unit at the Kusile power station. Energy Expert, Chris Yelland says the return of load shedding following an extended period of uninterrupted power supply, is a huge blow for the public. He spoke to Elvis Presslin.

In a tank in an underground laboratory in Cambridge a little green alga is executing a powerful breaststroke. It belongs to a group of algae called volvocales and it doesn't have a brain. So how can it coordinate its tiny little "arms" to perform motions worthy of an Olympic swimmer?   Algae going through their paces.  (Movies: Kirsty Wan and Raymond E. Goldstein, for more information see this paper)   In 2019 we visited Ray Goldstein, Schlumberger Professor of Complex Physical Systems at Cambridge, and he explained how algae manage to synchronise their so-called flagella, what this means for human physiology, and how it sheds light on the evolution of multi-cellular organisms from single-celled ones. You can also read our article on Goldstein's work with volvocales, or watch an interview with Goldstein in this video.     Sound effects in this podcast are from Robinhood76 and 16HPanskaKanclirova_Victoria on freesound.org.   This podcast was partially funded by the European Mathematical Society.

In this episode, I am joined by Ethan Calleja. Ethan is an ex-swimmer who transitioned into synchronized swimming. I think Ethan's story is so captivating from his success in swimming to building upon that in his synchro career. His willingness to try something new as an adult and to have worked so hard for the success of being the first male to represent Australia in synchro and compete at the 2019 world championships is something I find truly remarkable. Ethan also describes how he experienced a period of grief after stepping away from swimming and articulates it so well. He also shared so many embarrassing and funny stories as well as the incredible people he has met along the way. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.30.510304v1?rss=1 Authors: Sasse, L., Larabi, D. I., Omidvarnia, A., Jung, K., Hoffstaedter, F., Jocham, G., Eickhoff, S. B., Patil, K. R. Abstract: Functional connectivity (FC) refers to the statistical dependencies between activity of distinct brain areas. To study temporal fluctuations in FC within the duration of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning session, researchers have proposed the computation of an edge time series (ETS) and their derivatives. Evidence suggests that FC is driven by a few time points of high-amplitude co-fluctuation (HACF) in the ETS, which may also contribute disproportionately to interindividual differences. However, it remains unclear to what degree different time points actually contribute to brain-behaviour associations. Here, we systematically evaluate this question by assessing the predictive utility of FC estimates at different levels of co-fluctuation using machine learning (ML) approaches. We demonstrate that time points of lower and intermediate co-fluctuation levels provide overall highest subject specificity as well as highest predictive capacity of individual-level phenotypes. This week Beate-Helene Andersen, coach and founder of the Bergen Umbrellas talks to us about synchronised figure skating (synchro). The amazing story of the Bergen Umbrellas unfolds in this episode, as we find out how one persons idea to give passion to skaters, created a synchro skating team that has given back to her, as much as she gave to it.Beate-Helene very bravely ventured into the world of synchro knowing very little about synchronised figure skating, though an accomplished skater and coach herself, her move to form a synchronised skating team was a bold one. The most heart-warming part of this process was the reason behind it, to encourage a passion in figure skating. We hear what it is like to create and nurture a synchro team from scratch and struggles that involves. From starting the team, to now when they are competing, the journey is an interesting one. One that perhaps has given back to Beate-Helene, as she watches something quite lovely grow. The future for Team Bergen Umbrella is bright, you heard it here first. Listen to the story so far of Beate-Helene and the Bergen Umbrellas. If you are interested in either joining the Bergen Umbrellas or are able to help Beate-Helene with your synchro experience as a coach or choreographer, please feel free to contact her on Instagram on:@Team_BergenumbrellasOr we can pass your details on by contacting us at:info@icetwizzle.com

Anette Frisch lives in Dusseldorf, Germany. She swims in pools and the ocean, but mostly she is a pool swimmer, one that swims crawl because breaststroke is too slow for her. Which is not to say she is in a hurry. She is not; she is one of the most mindful swimmers I know, and this podcast very much became about exactly that – mindful swimming. It wasn't planned that way, it just happened. Which is part of the magic of mindful swimming – it just happens. She is passionate about swimming, and her website blog ‘bahnenziehen.de' captures this well. Her writing is eloquent, beautiful, and she captures some of the many stories that people have of the water, of swimming, of places to swim, of swimming moods, captures them before they evaporate. In this podcast, I try to capture Anette's story before it evaporates. And because music is so important to her, it is inevitable that it sneaks into the podcast. Will Synchronised Drone Light Shows Replace Fireworks? #1129

Many cities around the world cancelled their New Years Eve fireworks displays due to concerns about COVID-19. A few went ahead with a synchronised drone light show instead. Could these drone displays one day replace the fireworks completely? Maybe. Think about it.  Fireworks are noisey, smokey and certainly not cheap.  Drones are relatively noise free and no other real pollution concerns. And as the technology gets cheaper, I think drones may well be a great alternative to fireworks. Perhaps this year will prove to a tipping point for the end of fireworks displays? #fireworks #drones #tippingpoint

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! May 2021 see the return of music festivals, rock concerts and global tours! As most of the UK is spending New Year in Tier 4 lockdowns, I have no idea how this will happen but as Limp Bizkit and some bloke called George once said... We gotta have faith! This weeks episode of The Road To Rock is with a man who has toured the world and played more concerts and festivals than Steven Tyler can shake his microphone stand at.Jim Kirkpatrick is the lead guitarist with British melodic rock band FM and has been part of the band since 2008.FM was born in the summer of 1984 when Steve Overland and his brother Chris formed the band.  Over the years they toured with the likes of Foreigner, Saxon, Thin Lizzy and Bon Jovi, have headlined their own tours in the UK and globally and in May of 2020, released their 12th studio album called Synchronised.Aside from playing in FM, Jim performs with former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden and also tours with Rhino's Revenge, a band fronted by Status Quo bass player John 'Rhino' Edwards.Somehow in the midst of this manic work schedule, Jim found the time to release his own solo album, Ballad Of A Prodigal Son, back in September.I caught up with Jim a few weeks ago to chat about how the release went, how he joined FM, how they almost got stuck in Australia for the pandemic and what happened when he played the main stage of Download Festival for the first time....https://www.jimkirkpatrick.com/

Planning is a fundamental part of supply chains, and while I have had some customers on the podcast who refer to their use of planning, I haven't had an episode dedicated to the topic of planning, and how it is needing to go more realtime in these disrupted times.Consequently, I invited David Vallejo (@SAPVallejo on Twitter) to come on the podcast to have a deep dive into planning - where it is today, and how the requirements to be more nimble means supply chain planning is rapidly needing to go to cloud, and integrate with other functions, and organisations. This new vision of planning is called Synchronised Planning - and you heard about it here first folks ;)David and I had a great chat, and as ever, I learned loads. I hope you did tooIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - feel free to leave me a voice message over on my SpeakPipe page or just send it to me as a direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. So This Is My Why

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2020 68:35

Danielle Merlyn Kettlewell is an Australian synchronised swimmer who competed in the team synchronised swimming event in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. She was vice-captain of the Australian team which placed eighth overall with 75.4333 in the free routine and 74.0667 in the technical. She was also selected as Australia's first Mixed Duet in the sport of artistic swimming for the 2019 FINA World Aquatic Championships. She is now a coach and motivational speaker. *Who is Danielle Merlyn Kettlewell?* Danielle was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada to Australian parents, the youngest of 5 siblings (2 brothers and 2 sisters). Since young, she was exposed to the world of swimming and gymnastics and at the age of 8, entered the world of synchronised swimming (now known as “artistic swimming”). Now, you might think that she is a “typical” elite athlete who has always topped her year, had a natural affinity for her sport and ended up, inevitably, on the Olympic world stage. You couldn't be further from the truth. *The Unlikely Olympian* Danielle is the first to point out that she is an “unlikely Olympian”. She didn't have the right body type. Was never flexible enough. Was the “chubby one” on the team. The reserved at Nationals and didn't even rank in the top 100 in Canada! To top all that in October 2013, she was involved in a horrifying incident at training that resulted in her having a major concussion and needing to drop out of university to recover. A situation that resulted in her feeling extremely depressed. *2013/14* But in the worst of times, something quite unexpected happened. She had the chance to compete for a spot on the Australian national team seeking to qualify for the Rio Olympics! *Rio Olympics 2016* And in this STIMY interview, we dived deep into: * The process of being qualifying to be a part of the Olympic synchronised swimming team; * What she did to go from No.16 out of 16 to No.4 in the team rankings; * How synchronised swimming teams were selected to participate in the Rio Olympics 2016 (p/s: it's not really about being the best in the world!); * What it was like to participate in the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics; * What it was like training and participating in the Rio Olympics; and * Transitioning back to the “real world” after the Olympics. *Olympic Myth Busters* We do a lot of myth busters in this episode when it comes to the world of Olympics, and also the fact that men are discriminated against in the artistic swimming sport! Some things we discussed include: * Do all Olympians end up becoming rich and famous? (spoiler: she finished the Rio Olympics with $300 in her bank account!!); * What it is like to train to be a synchronised swimmer (now known as artistic swimming); * Why she decided to retire a second time & not try for her second Olympics; * The inherent sexism against men in the sport; and * Why the mixed duet was rejected from the 2020 Olympics (and why there is hope that this might change for the 2024 Olympics). *The Future* Danielle has now retired for the second time for the sport and is passionate about coaching people to pursue their dreams. Some advice she shares include: * What are the 3 questions you should ask yourself every day to transform yourself just like the Olympians do? * Her CLARITY Code For more details, visit the show notes at https://www.sothisismywhy.com/12 ( https://www.sothisismywhy.com/12 )

In a tank in an underground laboratory in Cambridge a little green alga is executing a powerful breaststroke. It belongs to a group of algae called volvocales and it doesn't have a brain. So how can it coordinate its tiny little "arms" to perform motions worthy of an Olympic swimmer? In this podcast Ray Goldstein, Schlumberger Professor of Complex Physical Systems at Cambridge, explains how algae manage to synchronise their so-called flagella, what this means for human physiology, and how it sheds light on the evolution of multi-cellular organisms from single-celled ones. Russian synchronised swimming champion Aleksandr Maltsev is a two-time World Champion, a four-time European champion and the first man to represent Russia in mixed-gender synchronised swimming at the highest level - as men only became allowed to compete in 2015. However, Aleksandr is unfazed, and remains a vocal advocate of gender-equality in the sport - his aim being to get men to compete at the next Olympics as a part of the mixed duet. Alina Isachenka meets Aleksandr in Moscow on one of his days off, which he decides to spend looking at paintings by one of his favourite artists, Frida Kahlo. She then travels with him to the closed sports base on the outskirts of the city, where Aleksandr lives and trains from dawn until dusk with his mixed duet partner Maya Gurbanberdieva, and their perfectionist coach. It’s here, in and around the pool they practice in, that Alina gains unique insight into the process of creating - what is hoped will be - a gold-winning routine for the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series taking place in Kazan in April.

A lot of what we love about this approach to teaching is what is not being said and not being done.  We believe in simplicity and challenge.  We teach connection.   Complexity forces the student into their heads.  A wall of words of instruction forces the student to filter out the teacher, disconnect actively.  We believe the class should be student-centric versus teacher centric. What to say comes from what the teacher sees, so it is relevant.

It’s a pleasure to welcome on board Psychonavigate records, Ireland's leading chill-out ambient and electronic music label, we are previewing two of their latest albums, definitely one to watch.   Rod-B.,Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement Jay Lumen… Music is part of his life since his childhood years. He learnt music in a conservatoire for eight years, which provides a good basis to his ambition of making music. During his schooldays it shown, that he rather turned the compositions of the classical authors to his own style, than he played the original versions of them. Although he learnt to play on a classical instrument – violin – he early recognized that his desire for creative work wasn’t satisfied with this instrument. Immediately he got his first computer, he started to make his ideas to be heard. In the meantime he started to get to know the synthetizator in the way of self-education. As he obtained the more developed technologies and softwares, developed himself with them, he got more and more closer to that sounding in which he felt himself familiar. Nowdays he is the one of fastest developer new generation DJ/Producers. As producer he has many international releases on many famous electronic music labels just like, Global Undergrond, Baroque, Whoop!, Extrema, Curvve, etc… Also you can find his tracks on more compilations to: GU Mixed2 (Global Underground), Bagrooves: The Black Collection (Seamless / Absolute), Synchronised 2 (Global Underground), Housexy: Summer In The City (Ministry Of Sound) etc… In his other side he has a vocal house project called „Supaflava” what was in the UK Club Chart Top 20 across 6 weeks. The best position of this track „Time In Motion” was 7th there. In jun2007 the major label Baroque Records asked Jay to make the next album of Baroque Elements series. After more then 6 months intensive work in february of 2008, Jay’s first double album „Baroque Elements 002” is out in the online and offline shops to. You can find the point where the DJ and producer meets when you listen BE002, couse It’s a mixed artist album. Also there is a DJ friendly (unmixed ) version on the second CD. The first feedbacks are really good whereas the promotional version of the album started at 11th place on the British Plastic Music Chart, leaves behind such big names as: „The Orb” or „Martin Solveig”. Also the”Elements Taster EP” vinyl with 2 tracks of BE002 is in the top sellers on juno permanently. As DJ he made his first party in the basic school when he was 14 years old only. In the beginning he played his favourite tracks from vinyl, but later, following the technical development, he changed the vinyl to using CDs. He builds his sets from the musical basis of house, tech-house, and progressive house. His sounding is featured by dynamic, pulsating grooves as you can hear it also in his compositions and in his sets to. In these times Jay Lumen plays around the world … just like at last times in Austria, Serbia, Poland,  Egypt, India, England, etc…Special Thanks to Jay Lumen www.myspace.com/jaylumenBooking info: Agent: Dina Foxe-mail: tilthdjs@gmail.com
