Kinnt Ju noch Teekessel speeln ut de School, dor wo twee Lüüd datsülbige Woord hebbt, dat overs twee ünnerscheedliche Bedüüdung‘ hett? Ball un Ball to'n Bispeel: „Op mien Teekessel kann man danzen.“ – „Mit mien Teekessel kann man speeln.“ Wurr ick dat hüüt nochmol speeln, op Platt, denn wurr ick 'n Woord nehm‘, dat veel mehr as blots twee Bedüüdung‘ hett. Un dat Woord is: „Schier!“ Dor kann man sick glieks mit vief Kollegen opstelln, all hebbt Schier in‘ Sinn un all meent se wat anners dormit. Geiht man to'n Bispeel no'n Slachter un will 'n Stück Fleesch hebben, in dat keen Knooken sünd, denn will man Fleesch hebben, dat „schier“ is. Overs ook Fleesch, an dat meist keen Fett sitt, is schier. Mokt man den Goorn schmuck, mit Unkruut hacken un Beete harken un Wege trech moken, denn is de Goorn an't Enn „schier“. Schier is also fettfrie un ohne Knoken un schmuck un sauber. Överdrievt man dat mit dat Kleihn in Goorn, is man in‘ Dutt vun de Arbeid, denn is man „schier“ mit Jack un Büx. Schier is also, fettfrie, ohne Knoken, schmuck, sauber un kaputt. Kümmt 'n Kind mit 'n Een in de Klassenarbeit vun de School no Huus, denn finnd de Öllern dat ganz seeker „schier“. Schier is also, fettfrie, ohne Knoken, schmuck, sauber, kaputt un würkli good. Overs vertellt man een, dat man jüst doröver nodinkt, wat dat Woord Schier allns heeten kann, denn kriegt man bilütten to heuern: „Du büst je ni ganz ‚schier‘!“. Schier is also, fettfrie, ohne Knoken, schmuck, sauber, kaputt, würkli good un ni ganz dicht. Un dorüm finn ick Schier richti schier… In düssen Sinn
Interview by Kris PetersCanadian metal outfit Kittie returned with a vengeance recently after a 13-year hiatus.Crashing onto the scene in 1999 with their debut album Spit, Kittie evolved far beyond their nu-metal origins, developing a crushing, full-fledged metal sound across six albums. They were a mainstay on the scene until taking a layoff which was to last over a decade. After their prolonged absence, Kittie came storming back this year with new album, Fire, a record that fuses every element of their past work into something even more volatile, proving they've lost none of their venom.Having not toured Australia since 2012, Kittie's return is nothing short of a metal revival. Expect a crash course in their discography that goes far beyond their nu-metal beginnings. From the venomous angst of Spit and the moshpit slam of Brackish to the progressive groove of What I Always Wanted and the hypnotic swagger of In Winter through to powerfully catchy new tracks like Vultures and One Foot in the Grave, Kittie's set will be an intense journey through their evolution, one that old fans will savour, and new fans won't forget. For over a quarter of a century, Kittie have defied stereotypes and broken barriers for women in metal, inspiring legions of fans and artists across the globe. Their comeback to Australian shores will be a hero's welcome for long time fans and an initiation for those just discovering their ferocity.HEAVY sat down for a chat with vocalist/guitarist Morgan Lander, starting with what we can expect from their live show."Oh gosh," she smiled. "Well… we've always prided ourselves in being just kind of like a straight-up metal band. I know a lot of bands use a lot of different things these days - technologies and things like that - but we've always been a band that just gets up there, four girls having a great time, just rocking out. A lot of fan interaction. A lot of screaming, and it's gonna be real loud (laughs). We just love what we do and have a great time. It's a fun show. It's a little bit angry, but that's metal, right?"In the full interview, Morgan tells us what has changed with the band since they were last out here, touring with Jinjer, three songs to get to know Kittie better, their return album Fire and how it was received, the pressures associated with their first album in 13 years, the early days of Kittie and where they fit in and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Although we do not see the big picture of God's plan, we can trust that He does. #theloriclineshow Interested in learning more about becoming a devoted follower of Christ? Go to follow.lifeword.org! ~~~ Are you ready to turn the page? Yep, me too. What is it about January that at times feels like it lasts forever? It's 31 days. There are other months that have 31 days, but why does January feel like it has 47? Needless to say, with all the winter weather we've had, I'm ready to turn the page into February and move one day closer to Spring! Let this season pass on by, because I can't see any growth. I need to SEE something grow! Things burst out of the ground in the Spring and I can get OUT and GO! In Winter, everything is cold and still, including me. We're not very good at being still are we? Does it take a layer of ice and snow or an arctic blast to force us to be still? Sometimes it does. The beautiful rhythms of time and rotation of seasons is no accident. Each one fulfills a purpose. The growth we see in Spring would not come without the rest and renewal of winter. It's easy to forget there is purpose in a bitter cold season of stillness with no visible growth. It's a reminder we are NOT in control and it's in that stillness and surrender we KNOW God IS. God IS always at work. Even when I don't see it. What God is doing in a season of winter is unique and beautiful, just like each snowflake that falls to the ground. A unique design being formed AS it falls. Beauty through surrender. It's the same in our life. Surrender, even in a cold season of NOT seeing, IS bringing forth something beautiful in a season to come. That's the way God works. We don't have to see it to believe it. We TRUST and KNOW He is working through all things and there IS purpose in every divine moment. I love what Jesus said to Peter when Peter didn't want Jesus to wash his feet. John 13:7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” Peter couldn't see the big picture. Jesus did. It wasn't for Peter to see, he needed only to surrender, serve and follow. Today, remember you can't see the big picture. You weren't meant to. This season may not look the way you had hoped, it's ok. Simply surrender, serve and follow. Trust God is in control. Trust requires letting go of wanting so desperately to SEE God move when and where and how you want Him to in your life. We can't realize or understand what He is doing, but later maybe we will. Still we surrender, serve and follow. For now, we simply REST where we are, in THIS season. Even in the cold, even in what we can't see. We can be still and know God IS at work and HE is the only one who brings restoration, renewal, revival and He will make all things new in the season to come. That's the truth. Don't question in the cold of winter, the goodness God has shown you in the Spring, Summer and Fall. His will WILL be done as we surrender, serve and follow. I'm Lori Cline.

Jonathan Norris lives in Toronto, and has a passion for tech that started early in his life. He has participated in the First Robotics competition, which got him into mechanical engineering, building robots, and leading teams to world championships. He still actively volunteers and mentors people in the program today. Outside of tech, he is a new Dad, and stays quite busy parenting his kid, when he's not riding an eBike to work.In Winter 2014, Jonathan and his founding team did Y-combinator and formed Taplytics. After doing this for nearly 10 years, what his team noticed was the most passionate users were developers using feature flagging over the core offering of the product. So - they decided to spin out a new brand, to focus on just that. This is the creation story of DevCycle.SponsorsDrataCacheFlyClearQueryLinkshttps://devcycle.com/https://taplytics.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathantnorris/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

IN WINTER the kinetic rhythms, crystalline tones and subtle timbres of the synthesizer seem to resonate with the chilled landscape. Whether flying over silent fields, frozen lakes and snow-covered hills, evoking the latent energy of the sleeping flora, or sounding the deep notes of a cold and barren world—electronic music creates a soundscape for the season. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an hour of superchilled winter electronica, on a program called ELECTRONIC NORTH. Music is by MARCONI UNION, CHRONOTOPE PROJECT, CONNECT.OHM, OOPHOI & PAUL VNUK, JR., and PATRICK O'HEARN. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
I've decided in recent years that waking up before dawn is the most practical thing I can do.When the morning is at its deepest, my mind at its most liminal, my children's soft bodies still tucked warmly beneath their blankets, I can slip into the wilderness of an unobserved inner communion for a while.I'm careful not to overlay this practice with too much prescription, especially as the days spiral inward on themselves with the approach of Winter Solstice. Each morning is its own creative act. What I want, simply, is to listen. To enter a silence from which some giving presence may emerge.I may sit for a timeless hour, journaling small bits as I go. That's a good morning. Often, my tea has just steeped when the sound of little feet scampering down the hallway arrives to announce the day. Mine is a practice of allowing life to flow in while maintaining an inner gaze — for this is my life, multi-hyphenated and brimming with kids still young enough to want my company.Brene Brown wrote about midlife in this way: “You can't cure the midlife unraveling with control any more than the acquisitions, accomplishments, and alpha-parenting of our thirties cured our deep longing for permission to slow down and be imperfect.” Straddled between my thirties and forties, I resonate with both the longing for permission and the sentiment of unraveling. As artists and contemplative practitioners, as human beings, we must claim the ground that offers itself to us at any stage of life. In some moments, like after a baby is born or when our professional or relational demands are completely overflowing, our sense of self-nurturance might seem fully buried. But even a longing remembrance of those hibernating parts is a kind of attention to our wellbeing. To everything, there is a season. This week, backlit by the arrival of December, unanswered emails blared from the inbox of my closed computer. I could find no respite from the checklist scrolling through my head. There were the food drives, the winter showcase, the holiday markets, potlucks, and travel arrangements — plus all the gifts that had to be afforded, acquired, and organized. Plus, I was nursing a sinus infection. These are signs of a bustling communal life, endowed with celebration. A life I love. ‘Tis the season, I remind myself. You can do it, I remind myself. But I've come to suspect that many of us, especially parents and introverts, my primary camps, privately hang on by a thread through the holidays. There's so much to do before year's end. So many loose ends to tie up. “You can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights,” wrote Maya Angelou. For those who celebrate the religious holidays this month American-style, the mandate is to spend, deck, wrap, tinsel, carol, swap, bake, hustle, and repeat. Time can feel like a horse breaking for the barn as momentum builds toward the end of the year — with us, heels clenched in stirrups, its anxious riders.Thoreau wrote, “In Winter, warmth stands for all virtue.” For all the wisdom in retreating to the hearth as the darkness deepens, our curious cultural instinct is to push and grasp, to cram all the nooks and crannies of the month with consumerism and acquaintanceship. Our commonplace addictions can become more pronounced, luring us into the false solace of empty carbs and agitating the spirit. Loosely considered resolutions tend not to extend beyond the halo of the disco ball, if we attempt them at all. The New Year arrives with its promise of renewal, and we show up for it with meager provisions… in the words of Hunter S. Thompson, “thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”Our approach to December might offer insight if we consider what we are unconsciously and collectively avoiding. Solstice is Nature's annual sermon on death and rebirth, on darkness and light. The season challenges our senses to recognize the beauty of barren trees and frozen ground — and the tenderness that can be found deep within sorrow.“There is a slumbering subterranean fire in nature which never goes out, and which no cold can chill. …This subterranean fire has its altar in each man's breast; for in the coldest day, and on the bleakest hill, the traveler cherishes a warmer fire within the folds of his cloak than is kindled on any hearth. A healthy man, indeed, is the complement of the seasons, and in winter, summer is in his heart.”-Henry David Thoreau, “A Winter Walk”There is a hearth that can only be accessed if we give ourselves permission to feel the sadness that is intrinsic to this human season. It's the warmth Thoreau points to at the altar of the heart, the joy of Joni Mitchell wishing for a river she could skate away on. It's not the most! wonderful! time! of the year! but the comfort of deep and abiding presence. If you haven't yet read ‘s Wintering, take yourself to the local bookshop and then prepare to curl up on your sofa for the long haul. She illuminates the lessons of the cold and dark, gifting us a roadmap for the season.“I recognized winter. I saw it coming (a mile off, since you ask), and I looked it in the eye. I greeted it and let it in. I had some tricks up my sleeve, you see. I've learned them the hard way. When I started feeling the drag of winter, I began to treat myself like a favored child: with kindness and love. I assumed my needs were reasonable and that my feelings were signals of something important. I kept myself well fed and made sure I was getting enough sleep. I took myself for walks in the fresh air and spent time doing things that soothed me. I asked myself: What is this winter all about? I asked myself: What change is coming?― Katherine May, Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult TimesWe can slow down and give ourselves permission to relate to this unraveling season more meaningfully. If we treat ourselves with respect and understanding, if we nurture down to the nadir, then Winter can provide us the conditions to meet our sorrows and avoidances with a bow of inquiry: What is this winter all about? What change is coming? The essence of advent, of awaiting an auspicious arrival, is to hold space for that which has not yet broken ground, that which is unseeable but faithfully becoming. We need only the willingness to wake up in the dark. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe

Nordic Combined is the only sport on the current Olympic program that is only open to men. Many athletes are working to change that, including Team USA's Annika Malacinski. We talk with Annika about how the sport works, which surprisingly involves a lot of body measurements (see: ski jumping suit scandal at Beijing), and we learn about one of the best winner's prizes ever. Annika gets pretty frank with us about how tough it is to not have her discipline in the Olympics. It tried to get into 2022, but was denied. Its attempt to get into 2026 needs your help! Next week, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board will meet, and finalizing the Milan-Cortina 2026 sports program is on the agenda. You can show your support for inclusion of women's Nordic combined by: Contacting an IOC member. Signing the Change.org petition. Tuesday, May 31, 2022 On behalf of Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region, and its National Security Task Force the Hoover Institution invites you to Taiwanese at the UN: The Use and Abuse of UN Resolution 2758 on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 11:30am-12:45pm PDT. In 1971, UN Resolution 2758 granted the seat occupied by the Republic of China in the General Assembly and the Security Council to the People's Republic of China (PRC). In recent years, the PRC has attempted to reinterpret this resolution as an endorsement of its "One China Principle," and it has promoted the fallacy that UN member states came to a determination that Taiwan was a part of the PRC. Yet, as the historical official records show, member states made no such determination about Taiwan's international status. This effort around Resolution 2758 is part of a broader campaign by the PRC to expand its influence in UN-affiliated bodies. Taiwan remains the foremost target of this campaign. Since 2016, at Beijing's behest, Taiwanese representatives have been blocked from participating even as observers in international organizations such as the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The PRC has institutionalized and normalized its stance on Taiwan within these organizations by signing secret agreements, restricting the access of Taiwan nationals to the UN and its facilities, and embedding PRC nationals across various levels of UN staff. The UN and its specialized agencies have not made the texts of these agreements available to the public or to any entity beyond the main signatories, though leaked guidance memos provide insights into the scope of MOU contents. In this event, Jessica Drun will discuss Beijing's efforts to “internationalize” its “One China Principle" and to conflate it with UN Resolution 2758. Her remarks will draw on a recent report, co-authored with Bonnie Glaser of the German Marshall Fund, that documents Beijing's expanding influence in UN-linked organizations. She will be joined by Chih-Fu Yeh, a PhD candidate in biology at Stanford University, who in December 2020 was improperly barred from joining a UNESCO-backed winter school session because of his Taiwanese nationality. Mr. Yeh will describe his own experience and highlight how overly strict interpretations of UN regulations and guidelines continue to impose real costs on Taiwanese citizens. SPEAKER BIOS Jessica Drun is a Nonresident Fellow with the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub. She has also held positions in the defense contracting space and the National Bureau of Asian Research. Ms. Drun specializes in cross-Strait relations, Taiwan politics, and U.S.-Taiwan relations and regularly provides commentary on these issues. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Chih-Fu Yeh is a PhD candidate studying microbial community ecology and evolution in Department of Biology at Stanford University. He was born and raised in Taiwan. In Winter 2020, Chih-Fu applied to a ICTP/UNESCO winter school session on quantitative systems biology, and was denied permission to attend the event because of his Taiwanese nationality. Kharis Templeman is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and part of the Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific. Templeman is a political scientist (Ph.D. 2012, Michigan) with research interests in Taiwan politics, democratization, elections and election management, party system development, dominant party systems, and politics and security issues in Pacific Asia, among other topics.
I can tell what season it is by the tomato questions I get. In fall, it's "Can I get these green tomatoes to ripen?" In Winter, the question is, “Is It Too Soon To Plant Tomatoes?” In Spring, it's, "Should I prune those first tomato flowers off?" And in Summer, it's the frantic tomato grower who asks, “What's wrong with my tomatoes? They're turning brown and wrinkly on the bottom!" That, of course, is blossom end rot.Let's tackle that summertime question now, in the spring. Because blossom end rot can be thwarted now if you take the right steps before that tomato plant sets fruit. We chat about blossom end rot with Don Shor, of Redwood Barn Nursery in Davis, CA.Also, we talk with "Grow Your Soil" author Diane Miessler, a long time gardener who champions the garden skills of "chop and drop" and the" snip and flip"…sometimes known as composting in place. Plus, she owns a vegetable tutu and plays the banjo. We're podcasting from Barking Dog Studios here in the beautiful Abutilon Jungle in Suburban Purgatory. It's the Garden Basics with Farmer Fred podcast, brought to you today by Smart Pots and Dave Wilson Nursery. And we will do it all in just a bit over 30 minutes. Identify The Season You're In: Winter
Alex Winter got started on Broadway at a very early age, where he landed roles in productions of The King and I and Peter Pan, which led him to NYU Film School and eventually to Hollywood. These days, Winter is best known for his role in the Bill & Ted franchise, where the most recent film Bill & Ted Face the Music comes out this year. However, when Winter is not playing a role, he’s often behind the camera, working on documentaries such as The Panama Papers, Zappa and HBO’s latest film, Showbiz Kids. In Winter’s latest film, “ A documentary about the highs and lows of children in show business, featuring interviews and examinations of the lives and careers of the most famous former child actors in the world.” In this interview, Winter discusses his experience as a “showbiz kid,” why he structures documentaries in a narrative fashion, how docs show subtle misconceptions (and misperceptions), why he sets parameters on his work, how docs deal with the “true nature of humanity” and fluid storytelling, and what it was like to step back into the shoes of Bill S. Preston. If you enjoyed this interview, join millions of viewers for the new YouTube video essay series, Creative Principles, which dissects new films, series, and more: bit.ly/2FARJz5

In each and every one of us, there's the capacity to do amazing things - Ray Zahab Ray Zahab and Stefano Gregoretti will run 2,200km (1,375mile) across Namibia with the primary goal of using satellite technology to bring their expedition into classrooms, and classrooms onto the expedition. Join them on instagram, Facebook and their official website www.transnamibia.com ! EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS The condition Ray has that I can't pronounce and that he doesn't think about A lot of the great things we do are quick decisions How risk-taking is a forgotten quality Origins of ImpossibletoPossible (i2P) The most difficult things we do in our lives are very relative to us as individuals Crossing the world's deserts and the Trans Namibia Expedition ABOUT RAY ZAHAB Canadian Adventurer & Founder of impossible2Possible (i2P) Challenge. Distance. Discovery On November 1, 2006, former "pack a day smoker" Ray Zahab and two friends, Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin, both accomplished runners, set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 kms after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea. This epic expedition had the trio running an average of 70kms a day without a single day of rest. National Geographic tracked the expedition by web, as well as the documentary film 'Running The Sahara', produced by Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award winner James Moll, was created in an effort to raise awareness for the drinking water crisis in North Africa. After witnessing and experiencing this water crisis in North Africa, Ray decided to leverage his future adventures to help raise awareness and funding for causes, like this one, that he supports and believes in. In 2007, Ray ran the three coastal trails of Canada back to back and virtually non-stop, for a total distance of 400 kms. The Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island, East Coast Trail Newfoundland and West Coast Trail in British Columbia. Motivated by the Sahara run - Ray conceptualized the Canada ONExONE Run in May 2008. Along with a team of runners, Ray ran an average 80 kms per day in each of Canada's 13 Provinces and Territories in 13 days. School visits were arranged along the way, students participated and communities became engaged in many of the issues which ONExONE endeavors to address to help improve the wellbeing of the world's children. In Saskatoon alone, several thousand students and 27 schools were involved in school rallies and a city wide relay with Ray and the team. In 2008, Ray founded impossible2Possible (i2P) (impossible2possible.com) an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, inclusion and participation in expeditions. Youth Ambassadors are selected from around the globe then participate, at no cost, in all aspects of the expedition, from logistics and running to creating educational content and team support. All of the i2P Youth Expeditions have included various challenge based initiatives through an Experiential Learning program, in which thousands of students participate as active 'team members' during the expeditions, from classrooms all over the world. This program and its technology is also provided at no cost to the students or schools participating. Since its inception, i2P Youth Expeditions have included 9 grueling expeditions; Baffin Island, Tunisia, the Amazon, Bolivia, India, Botswana, Utah, Peru and Chile. The programs and expeditions are 100% free of cost. In 2009, Ray and two other Canadians, Kevin Vallely and Richard Weber, broke the world speed record for an unsupported expedition by a team to the South Pole. In the process, Ray trekked this traditional route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, a distance of 1,100 kms, solely on foot and snowshoes, without the use of skis. Students from all over North America joined the team on a daily basis, a program provided through impossible2Possible, as the trio continued their southern trek. The students received daily communications and actively took part in every step of the trek. Essentially becoming "teammates" of the expedition, and teammates of the Guinness World Record. In winter 2010, Ray and Kevin Vallely ran the length of frozen Lake Baikal in Siberia, 650 kms, over the course of 13 days, totally unsupported. Once again communication with satellite video conferencing to schools brought the expedition into classrooms, and classrooms onto the expedition. In early 2011, Ray ran the length of the "driest desert on Earth", the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Here he ran 1,200 kms in 20 days with minimal daily re-supply and with his camping gear on his back. Thousands of students joined this journey, again under his i2P organization, via live web and video conferencing. In summer 2011, Ray and Will Laughlin ran from the north park boundary to the south park boundary of Death Valley National Park, totally off-road. The 237 km run saw temps reaching over 120 degrees F. Beginning June 23rd 2013, Ray ran over 2,000km across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. He was accompanied by both a film crew and photographer who recorded not only the expedition, but also created an robust film archive sharing the stories of the people and culture of Mongolia. This marks the beginning of the "To The Edge" series chronicling the stories and people and that Ray comes into to contact with on expeditions...situations and people that occur when at the edges of the Earth! Contractor Success Map with Randal DeHart | Contractor Bookkeeping And Accounting Services
This Podcast Is Episode Number 0207 And It Will Be About Contractor Vs. Tax Accountant View Of Financials Contractors View Of The Numbers And Tax Accountants View Are Different Tax Accountants Review Financial Statements After The Year Has Ended The Tax Accountant’s Role Is To Review The Previous Year Financial History based on the information provided create and file the Annual Federal Tax Return, Annual State Tax Return, and other Local or Payroll Returns. Washington State is a sales tax driven state. Other states have a State Income Tax, and others yet have a blend of both. The Contractors Role Is To Review What Is Happening Now and make Strategic Decisions about what to know in order to have a brighter financial future. The best way to do that is to have QuickBooks Setup to deliver your 5 Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in 5 minutes a day at 5 pm or whatever time is best for you. We call them the 5 At 5 For 5, and we can set them up in your QuickBooks for you! Click here to learn more. Every Construction Contractor Should Have A Tax Accountant Prepare And File Your Annual Tax Returns Congress passes a ton of laws which each one could have zillion pages with addendums and other attachments that will make all the individual bills even harder to understand. Tax Accountants need to keep track of all of these changes. Changes – Question is What impacts Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. A single bill may include all three possibilities. The condensed Version of the U.S. Master Tax Guide [year] (copies provided by your local Payroll Services) is very similar to size and font of the OSHA Book. In other words, the U.S. Master Tax Guide is “Fat” like how the telephone books used to be. When discussing the U.S. Master Tax Guide, it is a book and can be described as a “Thick Book With Very Tiny Print.” Just The Book that everyone wants to read on a warm, cold, hot, sunny, rainy, cloudy Saturday afternoon. (Not - for those who might be missing my humor). I have copies of several years of U.S. Master Tax Guides, and every one of them is 1000 pages. Remember this is the condensed version referencing only the Most Common tax issues. I expect my Tax Accountant to know The Answer to everything that I may encounter and how to properly deal with it on my annual tax return. Once The Tax Accountant Has Your Financial Statements It Is All “After The Fact” Accounting. The end of the year has passed. Many of us automatically file an extension so it may be closer to September so “The Past” really is the past. Way past time to say, I wish I had done this instead. You can say it – It just won’t change the outcome of previous decisions. There are limited “things” the Tax Accountant can move, change or adjust. The year is over. The real question is “How Much Do I Have To Pay?” If you have paid into the Internal Revenue Service via W-2 or Estimated Taxes, hopefully, the amount due will be close to Zero. Tax Accountants Are Busy, And Everyone Wants Their Returns Filed. Yes, you can be the first one on your block to get your taxes done but is that a good idea? In my opinion, as a business owner, you do not want your Tax Accountant to roar through your tax return, get it done quick, without really reviewing your individual circumstances. Side note, those with College Students on Financial Aid always need to have their returns completed early to meet the Federal Deadlines. Everyone usually receives from their Tax Accountant a “Tax Booklet” with check sheets to help prepare for documents the Tax Accountant needs to complete the Annual Tax Return. Usually, this Tax Booklet is geared towards what the Tax Accountant needs to complete the Personal Return. Tax Accountant is hoping everything is in the Business Financial Statements and there are just a few things left to do to be able to complete the annual Business Return. Tax Accountants Are Paid To Fill Out Tax Returns Not Save You Money Or Mentor You We Are Paid To Do Your Contractor Bookkeeping Your Profit And Growth Mentor Tax Preparers Normally Only Do The Following: · Figure Out The Vehicle and Equipment Depreciation · Look for missing expenses (usually not very hard) · Ask for Cash Receipts (only in passing) · Review Meals and Entertainment (big-ticket meals or excessive meals) · Review for items that are really Owner Draws, Loan to Members or Loans To Shareholders · Owner Equity put into the company (only if they see it) · Other Assets (Job Deposits | WIP) · Other Liabilities (Short or Long Term Notes) · Petty Cash (will ask if you have Cash On Hand) · Suspense (should be cleared out to Zero) · Ask My Accountant (need to have receipts and details to help identify who, what it is for) · Anything that looks Odd (Tax Accountant does not want an audit, so it is better you overpay taxes) Tax Accountants Work With Messy And Incomplete Records To Do Their Job They appreciate a good set of Financials from a Contractors Bookkeeping Services (Fast Easy Accounting). Sometimes Tax Accountants have to be the “Big Person” and refuse future service until the bookkeeping is in a more organized set of financials that they can use. The last thing a Tax Accountant wants is an audit. Finally, the Tax Accountant is ready to start all over and review your Personal Income and Deductions, and then they are able to produce for you two Annual Tax Returns. Depends on the individual returns, and when you are filing whether you can file the returns electronically. Hopefully, you have paid enough in personally to be able to receive a refund. Tax Accountants Rarely Have Time To Give You More Than The Basics toward Tax Planning beyond the different IRA’s and 401K’s. The Reality is that most of the time The Contractor is ready to leave because the whole process is similar to going to The Doctor. The entire experience of taxes leaves you the Contractor feeling exposed. You know that funny feeling where you have on “The Gown” and your blood pressure immediately rises when the doctor walks in and closes the door. Contractors View of the Financial Statements Contractors are just a little bit annoyed if they want real answers about their business and discover the Tax Accountant is really good at rolling up the numbers and having a Tidy Tax Return but most of them are clueless about construction. The Contractor wonders why if they are both looking at the same numbers on the Financial Statements that the Tax Accountant cannot or will not be more helpful with answers needed in running their business. The Short Answer Is There Is A Vast Difference Between Regular Accounting and Construction Accounting. Tax Accountants are a generalist and understand Regular Accounting. Tax Accountants have to be to be able to complete the maximum number of client’s tax return. In their world, the expenses are similar for all businesses. It starts out with Income – Expenses = Net Income or Net Loss. The bottom line number on a Schedule C is Net Income or Loss and is the same for all the businesses. S-Corps have its own return with the numbers passing through to your personal annual Tax Return. My opinion is Tax Accountants like Personal Tax Returns better because they are like sweet, decadent desserts; whereas Contractor's Business Tax Returns are the vegetables (which is great if you love vegetables) because they have to deal with the Contract's Business Tax Return before they can get to the fun stuff. Or maybe it is just a business decision because everyone has a Personal Tax Return and only some of us have a Business Tax Return. All phases of accounting and bookkeeping are a specialty including Tax Accounting, General Accounting, and Construction Accounting. Generally, Contractors Are Not Trying To Play “Stump The Wizard” when they are asking the Tax Accountant questions about their Financial Statements. Many contractors will have their Tax Accountant prepare Payroll, Payroll Tax Reports, State and Local Tax Reports (sales tax). Does the Tax Accountant understand your business, even a little bit? If the Tax Accountant does not work with sales tax issues on a regular basis, the contractor may have to explain the rules that impact them to their Tax Accountant. Each state is different is what and how they collect State and Local taxes. The most common thing is that “They Do.” The most basic question Contractors ask is “Am I Making Money Or Losing Money”? The next question is “Where Did I Make Money? It should be an easy question to answer. Unfortunately, when everyone is doing everything but tracking the paperwork and the money there are no answers to be found. Without A System, It Is Impossible To Know If Your Employees Are Wasting Time And If Material Is Being Wasted This does not mean having a drone flying overhead watching their every move to start with by asking 5 simple questions: 1. Do they have the Right Tools and Equipment? 2. Do they know your expectations? 3. Do they feel they are being paid fairly? 4. Are they a Willing Worker and doing the job? 5. Will they use an electronic Time Card? (T-Sheets) Part of the role of Management is knowing “What 10 Minutes Waste Costs You”In Washington State, the Worker’s Compensation rate is set by the individual tasks and then calculated by the hours worked. Other states have similar ways to calculate Workers Compensation or Insurance. In most states, Laborers and Apprentices have the exact same Worker’s Compensation rate as the Lead Person on the job. Skill level is different, and the Contractor is always balancing the Cost of Wages against Value of The Skill of Each Worker. Contractors are always faced with variables including costs that continue to rise after the bid has been accepted. One little hurricane can impact the cost of building material across the country. One little snow storm and delay truckers and the goods they carry. One little bit of sunshine is okay for days but months and months where is it not normal can be a huge deal. In Winter, you expect snow in the mountains to go skiing, rain in the Spring for flowers, the sun in the Summer to play, and a little frost in the Fall on the pumpkins. With changing weather patterns, we all need to adapt. We are in the greater Puget Sound (Seattle area), and for years it was 350 days of rain, winter rain, spring rain, fall rain, maybe 15 days of summer. Today it snowed! Last week it snowed and the week before it snowed. Good News, the snow did not stay long and for the most part did not impact schools. At the same time, other places around the USA had different experiences. Contractors Play A Type Of Sports Game Every Day Without The Rewards Of A Fat Guaranteed Contract. They go Up To Bat, Jump Through Hoops, Run Down The Field all in hopes of securing The Call, Creating The Bid, Closing The Sale, Preforming The Work, Getting Paid. Have a Life. Contractors want to know “Are I Making Money” or “Losing Money” now “Which Job?” Should I be doing “More of This” and “Less of That?” Sometimes is a little hard for The Contractor to be Happy and Full of Smiles when a project Goes Over Budget, you have Given Away Free Change Orders to Keep The Customer Happy and Discovered Material Is Way Over Budget. If The Contractor has 30 day accounts the final bills are still coming in after the project is complete. If it is a Time and Material billing and the final invoice was created too soon; it is almost impossible to get additional funds from the customer. It is by exception, that additional funds can be collected and always get signed Change Orders and paid promptly over waiting to the end of the project. Many times, Contractors think they have made money based on the fact that all the bills got paid and there was some money left over. With poor bookkeeping, it is hard to know because the checking account may be reflecting checks that have not cleared, deposits from the next job, personal funds deposited back into the account to cover last minutes’ expenses and forgotten. Good Construction Bookkeeping is the solution A little bit of effort towards Job Costing can be very helpful in understanding the numbers. The Key is asking the Right Professional the right question. Tax Accountants understand how to roll all the numbers up from the different aspects of your personal and business life into a summary Tax Return for the Internal Revenue Service. Construction Accountants understands the numbers in your business and where to properly put them. Your Banker looks at both sets of numbers and decides if you are credit worthy for a loan. Get a Board of Advisors NOW! The Contractor and Contractor’s Spouse look at the numbers and either Smile and say “WOW” or Frown and Say “Ouch” “Oh Crap” or something much more descriptive. Singer-songwriter Katie Melua, chef Tom Kerridge, writer Alex Wheatle and actor Nigel Havers join Libby Purves and the audience in the BBC Radio Theatre. Katie Melua, the singer and songwriter, was born in Georgia, when it was part of the Soviet Union, and moved to Belfast when she was nine. She returned to her homeland to make her new album, In Winter, working with the Gori Women's Choir. Katie recalls her early years in Georgia, and the very different life she found in Belfast, and she and the 24 members of the Choir perform two songs. Writer Alex Wheatle won this year's Guardian children's fiction prize for his young adult novel Crongton Knights, set around an inner-city estate. Born in 1963 to Jamaican parents living in Brixton, Alex spent much of his childhood in care, and says that a short stint in prison after the 1981 Brixton riots led to a passionate interest in literature, thanks to the advice of a fellow prisoner. Actor Nigel Havers rose to fame as Lord Lindsay in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, and is renowned for playing charmers, cads and conmen. He's currently playing the Lord Chamberlain in panto at the London Palladium, and his varied career includes roles in Coronation Street, Downton Abbey and a high-profile cameo earlier this year in The Archers. Tom Kerridge is chef and co-owner of The Hand and Flowers pub in Buckinghamshire - the first pub in the world to receive two Michelin stars. He is about to publish Tom Kerridge's Dopamine Diet, which draws on his own experience: he found himself very overweight, a result of the late-night lifestyle of the professional kitchen, and lost more than eleven stones after he devised a diet which remained true to the ideas which underpin his cooking. Consider the nature of story and how we become better storytellers. Explore the use of tensiveness. Every story needs two sticks to rub against one another. One stick cannot be a story. The simplest things can become incredibly significant when there is tensiveness. “The Man From The South” shows how something as simple as lighting a lighter can be breathtaking. Explore the use of tensiveness. Tensiveness is what happens when two sticks, two characters, two places, or two things rub against one another. You can't make a fire with one stick, or a good story with no conflict. The character must be trying something that is hard. Sometimes we love a character even when he fails, because he tried. Examples are Rocky, and One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest. To find tensiveness, list the characters, the places, the actions, and the time of the story. Explore the story cycle. The story cycle is a circle and can be started anywhere. The overarching story cycle comes from Robert McKee's book and seminars. All stories have a backstory and the more you know, the better you will understand the current story. The story has four basic parts. Summer consists of stories start off in a state of bliss. In Fall, there is a problem, something that moves the plot away from the bliss of summer. In Winter, life is bleak and almost unbearable. Winter is as bad as life can be and usually ends with a surprising plot twist. This twist then leads to Spring. In this section, Winter's stronghold is broken. Note that this does not work for tragedies. Consider the dark parts of stories. Give yourself permission to go to dark places. Listen to a Teach 12.com audio story. What kind of tensiveness was felt and how did the story strike you? Consider the subtle change from seemingly harmless to relatively dark. Explore the topic of the audience. Don't put these stories out too soon. You need to be able to personally handle the issues that you bring up.
Sleeping out in a forest, next to the earth, can be a simultaneously beautiful and terrifying experience. In Winter the nights are so long, cold, and the mornings quiet, free of birdsong. In summer, the rains can fool us, make us weary..heats dry our skins, bring a thirst. Despite these things, when that moment comes to rest on the earth, we are at one with nature, and with ourselves. Lying alone, in the wild, exposed, returned, can deliver questions and answers like no other experience can. Washing in and out of sleep, time upon time, minute by minute. All is seen. The title of this comes from the following poem by Mary Oliver.... Sleeping In The Forest I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the riverbed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom. By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times into something better. - Mary Oliver Image by Casper David Friedrich
