For this episode of So, You Like Horror?, Jake is joined by Sarah to discuss the 2023 horror-comedy The Blackening. Directed by Tim Story and written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, the film follows a group of college friends whose Juneteenth weekend reunion turns deadly when they discover a disturbing board game and become targets of a masked killer. Jake and Sarah break down the movie's central question: if the Black character is usually the first to die in a horror movie, what happens when the entire cast is Black? They discuss the film's mix of slasher horror, ensemble comedy, cultural references, friendship drama, and social commentary, along with the way it challenges stereotypes about Black identity and representation. The conversation also explores the cast chemistry, the “Blackest” debate, the Juneteenth setting, the effectiveness of the killer and board-game concept, and whether The Blackening works better as a horror film, comedy, or social satire. They also compare it to films such as Scream, Scary Movie, Get Out, Candyman, and The Cabin in the Woods. Does The Blackening successfully flip one of horror's oldest stereotypes? Is it scary enough to work as a slasher? And does it belong in the larger conversation around modern Black horror? Listen now and let us know where The Blackening ranks among your favorite horror-comedies.
Send us Fan MailThis week on Building Halloween Gory Nights, Jimmy and the crew revisit one of the most influential monster movies ever made: Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.Released in 1943, the film brought together two of Universal's greatest horror icons and helped establish the concept of monster crossovers decades before shared cinematic universes became commonplace. The crew discusses the film's atmosphere, legacy, creature designs, and memorable moments while exploring how the movie could be adapted into a haunted house, scare zone, or immersive horror attraction. From gothic horror environments to legendary monster encounters, the episode celebrates a film that remains a cornerstone of horror history and Universal Monsters mythology.Ghost ExecutionersMerchandise!https://www.teepublic.com/user/thehorrificnetwork?utm_source=designer&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=horrificnetworkFollow All Things Horrific Network Herehttps://linktr.ee/thehorrificnetworkGet Your Sinister Creature Con Tickets Herehttps://www.sinistercreaturecon.com/thecon

In this episode, we'll take a detailed looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger's break-out sci-fi horror film, The Terminator! From Arnold Schwarzenegger's unstoppable killing machine to Linda Hamilton's iconic performance as Sarah Connor, we break down the film that changed action and horror forever. We talk brutal practical effects, neon-soaked 80s atmosphere, legendary one-liners, and why this low-budget classic still hits harder than most modern blockbusters.Come with us if you want to live.Listen now and join the resistance.
Returning guest Don Campbell joins us as we meet Charles Lee Ray in episode 156, tackling Tom Holland's 1988 classic Child's Play as the second entry in the "It's Voodoo Baby" triple feature. We break down all eight of Chucky's major reveals, from the voodoo soul transfer that opens the film to the battery scene confrontation between Karen Barclay and the Good Guy doll, to the fiery finale in the apartment. Along the way we explore Don Mancini's original "Blood Buddy" script, the Cabbage Patch doll craze that inspired the film, the raised soundstage set and practical puppet work that brought Chucky to life, and why Catherine Hicks' performance makes Child's Play as much a story about a struggling single mother as it is a slasher. The episode closes with our favorite reveals ranking, real monsters, and a round of "would you survive Chucky?" Next up: Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow closes out the triple feature. Dan has some older tales for us this week. Then we go explore seances with Daniel Dunglas Home- was he a fraudster or were his seances real, you tell us! Lynze has four different ghosty tales this week. From catching something creepy on a sleep app to a spirit caught in a couch to the spirit of a man who insists he must come in and ending with a little boy and his toy. Enjoy! Dan considers a creepy question in his first story this week. We'll explore the strange phenomenon of some people seeming to have known in advance exactly when they were going to die. Is that something you want to know if you had the chance? Then, we'll head to Nigeria to look at the disturbing claims that came from a forested area just outside the big city of Ibadan. Are people still being sacrifice to something ? Lynze has two awesome stories! The first explores a local Kentucky legend, Hatchet Harry's. When a group of young kids test their limits of fear, what do they encounter? Lastly, should you let someone who once owned your current home, die in "their" home? Dana certainly thought so.
