Dr. Laura invites Jennifer Buchanan, author of “Wellness, Wellplayed”, back to the show to discuss wellness through music. Jennifer discusses how music plays a key role in impacting our mood, memory, and productivity, and she shares stories about witnessing the power of music therapy in action.Music has an incredible impact on our moods: Jennifer talks about how it can motivate us out of a slump and increase our serotonin levels. She details the positive effects of music on every stage of our lives. One of the physical areas in which music therapy has a demonstrable impact is in neuro rehab. Jennifer explains how challenges in fine or gross motor movement after a brain injury can be positively influenced by elements of music. “So music has this incredible capacity to act like a drug on our system and … the hormones and neurotransmitters that affect us. You hear about the words dopamine, for example, and that feel-good oxytocin, which is that social bonding hormone that can be released in our system, and serotonin, which is the one you don't want to get too low because you start feeling low and there's this nice window of where serotonin needs to reside. And what we have found through the research and evidence is that music has this incredible capacity to be able to change those hormone levels in our system, especially when we use [music] regularly.” - Jennifer BuchananAbout Jennifer Buchanan:Jennifer Buchanan is an award-winning author and Music Therapist, instrumental in the implementation of hundreds of music therapy programs throughout Canada since 1991. Her company JB Music Therapy has thrice been nominated for the Community Impact Award by her local Chamber of Commerce. She is the author of several books including Wellness, Wellplayed: The Power of A Playlist and is a regularly invited guest to speak at industry conferences that aim to strengthen and inspire people working in healthcare, education, and the public sector including law enforcement. As a subject matter expert, Jennifer is a trusted source for many television media outlets across North America and has been featured in publications such as The Guardian and The Huffington Post.As a board member and service provider with the National Music Centre, Jennifer champions music for health and wellness throughout Canada and beyond.Resources:Jennifer Buchanan websiteJB Music Therapy website JB Music Therapy on FacebookJB Music Therapy on Twitter JB Music Therapy on InstagramJennifer Buchanan on LinkedInJennifer Buchanan on FacebookJennifer Buchanan on Instagram“Wellness, Wellplayed: The Power of a Playlist” by Jennifer Buchanan “Wellness, Wellplayed Workbook” by Jennifer Buchanan “Tune In: A Music Therapy Approach to Life” by Jennifer Buchanan “Wellness Incorporated” by Jennifer BuchananOngoing History of New Music podcast by Alan Cross“This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession” by Daniel J. The truth is we divulge more information to Google that we do to our friends, our family or even our doctors. Our social media persona can paint a very different picture to what we secretly search for on Google. So what do search trends in Google tell us about ourselves and our society? Does it matter that we are different on Google than in person? Author of bestseller Everybody Lies (https://amzn.to/32ULlgD), Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, tells us how data can unlock the keys to happier relationships and even how to better parent our children. Topics We Discuss with Seth: (3:15) Welcome and speed round questions. (12:53) Are people more honest with Google or with their friends? (16:01) The juxtaposition between our social media presence and our Google searches. (21:03) Does everybody really lie? (26:06) Why people lie about sex. (30:00) Why your children's outcome is affected by your location. (36:37) Using more data and less intuition to make decisions. (44:28) The data to use and not to use for successful dating. (47:57) What age do we get hooked on music? (54:10) Do people lie about music? Join us for our follow-on discussion in Episode 245 where Kurt and Tim have a Grooving Session on what they have talked about with Seth: the effect of context with honesty, tips for successful dating and the influences surrounding our children. If you’re looking for a way to explore the concept of meaning, how it relates to culture, religion, politics, history, sexuality, dissatisfaction, and so much more, this podcast is for you. We’re currently experiencing a crisis of meaning. People and groups are divided, each convinced their way of thinking and their beliefs are the “right” ones. We have a hard time letting multiple things be true at the same time, when in reality they are but all of our realities are different. We get weighed down by the complexities of information overload and experience grief in the process. Since most of us run from bad feelings or simply don’t know how to address them, we go into denial and look for an escape. We end up with more anxiety, more depression, and poorer relationships. But this isn’t an unstoppable progression. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Jamie Wheal about why it’s so hard to make sense of the world right now and what we can do to help ourselves expand our understanding. They discuss the five key drivers that give us the tools to wake up, grow up, and show up for ourselves. They also talk about how we move from broken to whole, and how we cure isolation with connection. Jamie is the author of the global bestseller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work. Episode 1: Golden SlumbersIn our first chapter in this podcast series, we explore the creation story that surrounds the song Golden Slumbers, which is found on the second side of the Abbey Road album. In our discovery process, we find ourselves traveling back in time – of all things!Indeed, we need to go back, some 400 – 650 years, to discover the genesis of the lyrics to this song on the Abbey Road album. You might exclaim; 400 – 650 years!? Really?Well, here's a heck of a question for you. What is the connection of ALL of the following, to Paul McCartney's song, Golden Slumbers? A poem written by Thomas Dekker in the year 1599 AD Canterbury Tales , finished by Chaucer in 1400 AD The Decameron, written by Giovanni Boccaccio, who died in 1375 AD the Black Death, in Tuscany, in the 1300's the Covid-19 crisis today (as of the publishing of this podcast episode)? Find out by listening to Chapter 1 of this podcast series celebrating the life and music of Paul McCartney. The answer will surprise you. And what is more, in this discovery journey, we explore how it was that Paul knew how to construct the underlying chord progressions for this song and why they move us so. Believe it or not, the answer to this question can be found in the songs, Twist and Shout and She Came in Through the Bathroom Window. To boot, we finish the first podcast in this series with an introduction to another creation story – this time for the song, Eleanor Rigby.
