The Toyota GR86 has had a surprisingly convoluted history despite its relatively short tenure in the Toyota portfolio. Once the flagship sport coupe that flew under the youth-oriented Scion brand as the FR-S, the coupe earned the 86 badge to ride out the remainder of its original generation under new management. For the launch of the second-generation car, Toyota stuffed the two plus two under its GR banner and renamed it the GR86 – adding a third name for the North American shopper to know. This second-gen coupe still shares a platform with Subaru's BRZ and still has flat-four power. However, the second-generation car now packs 2.4 liters of naturally aspirated flat-four power under the hood and throws 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '24 Toyota GR86 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the evolving, second-generation GR86 and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of Toyota's entry-level sport coupe. Luckily for Jason (and all of us,) Derek – who also recently drove a Diablo Roadster – brought along this spectacular orange Diablo GT (one of just 83 ever built), which both he and Jason took for a spin. Their impressions followed after a brief history lesson courtesy of Derek.  The history lesson will include the origin of Lamborghini itself at the hands of multiple different owners: Ferruccio Lamborghini, Jean-Claude and Patrick Mimran, and Chrysler, which took over just as the Diablo concept was nearly production ready. Luckily for everyone, legendary designer at Bertone, Marcello Gandini, didn't throw his hands up and walk off the job, and we got the Diablo (and the non-Chrysler-tainted early designs went on to become the Cizeta-Moroder V16T). But it was the 90s, and we demanded more! So the motorsport-focused Diablo GT was born. Featuring widened front fenders, a carbon-fiber rear diffuser, carbon-fiber bucket seats, oil cooler w/ heat extractor hood vent, and a roof scoop to direct cold air into the massive carbon-fiber intake plenum feeding independent throttle bodies – and much, much more! Like all Diablos, the interior is a little kit-car spec. A flat bezel with holes carved into it for individual gauges comprises the main “cluster.” The suspension is ultra-stiff, but handles exceptionally well on smooth tarmac. And the car can effortlessly break traction at both near-idle RPMs and at near-triple-digit speeds. Rear visibility is non-existent (there is effectively no rear window), but boy are you visible to everyone else on the road.  Before we wrap things up, we talk crankshafts and who made the first modern flat-plane crank for a production V-8. Perhaps it's the Urraco and not the Ferrari 308? Ford's contemporary flat-plane crank Voodoo V-8 from the Shelby GT350 is known to shake itself to pieces. Is that par for the course? Chevy's C8 Z06 Corvette seems to be doing just fine. As are the AMG GT Blacks Series and Aston Martin Valhalla, but does anyone care?  Cars like the new Revuelto and Temerario are more common than ever these days. And the number of people who stand a chance of someday affording them seems to be dwindling. Do you care about these million-dollar super cars? Then the boys dive into Gran Turismo – no, not the classic Playstation racing simulators – but rather attaining and maintaining high speeds over extended durations. More specifically, the “Old Man GT” episode of Cammisa's Ultimate Drag Race Replay, which features some of the quickest, most expensive, and impractical 4-wheeled jewelry money can buy: the McLaren GTS, Mercedes-AMG GT63, and Bentley Continental GT Speed.  While discussing the new AMG GT63 (which no longer rides on underpinnings from the Dodge Viper lineage like its predecessors, the gullwing-door SLS AMG and the previous AMG GT, but now shares its platform and drivetrain with the SL line), Derek shares a nugget from his vintage Mercedes literature which shows SL buyers in the 1990s had significantly more money to spend than S-Class-buying plebes. And Jason theorizes that SEC owners likely had even more still.  Speaking of the Mercedes, Jason laments that the new SL63's posterior profile looks suspiciously Porsche 911-y, but the duplicative flattery appears to date all the way back to the Porsche 356 and the contemporary Mercedes-Benz W198 300 SL Gullwing.   In other news, Motor Trend Video is dead, and Jason is deeply empathetic.  After the mourning, we delve into the next drag race episode: cars under $35,000! This episode pits the latest crop of cheap speed against one another in bracketed races with nearly every drivetrain orientation: naturally aspirated, turbocharged, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, manual, automatic, DCT, and so on. Unabashed boosted 4-cylinder noises assault the senses and appease the Abarth gods. Our first race pits the front-wheel drive cars against one another: the Hyundai Elantra N races the Mk8 Volkswagen GTI and the new F66 Mini Cooper S – which is completely overlooked by enthusiasts in 2024 (and is too cutesy for its own good), yet somehow manages to be effortlessly quick and best the OG hot hatch GTI.  Then, the second race includes the rear- and all-wheel drive cars: the rwd Ford Mustang EcoBoost races the rwd Toyota GR86, the awd Subaru WRX and the surprisingly quick Mazda 3 Turbo AWD.  And all Jason wants for Christmas is a GR86/FR-S/BRZ hatchback with a K24.  Learn more about your ad choices. Today I am sitting down with Brian and Joel, two of the founders of Scalar Performance.After meeting at the track and teaming on some endurance racing, Brian and Joel created Scalar Performance to build a dedicated EV track car for the amateur racer. The performance of an electric powertrain is impressive, and Tesla cars have been breaking lots of records as more and more show up to the track. But at the end of the day, some must-haves for the street are not needed or even get in the way for a dedicated track car. Enter the Scalar SCR1 which takes the well-loved Toyota GR86 chassis with its robust aftermarket and then swaps in a bespoke EV drivetrain. The result is a car which is almost the same weight as its ICE counterpart but with power and balance similar to a Porsche GT4, a top speed of 146 mph, and is already caged and approved for everything from HPDE to wheel to wheel Super Touring (ST) with the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Honda has just pulled the wraps off its first dedicated battery-electric crossover SUV, and we'll have all the details about it. Our special guest this week is Jonathan Rivers, who is manager of product information at American Honda. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to sit with him for a behind-the-scenes briefing at a secret location in Southern California. Honda is basing its first all-electric SUV on a General Motors platform the Prologue shares with the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV. But the Prologue presents itself as a Honda through and through. A long look at a pre-production version of the crossover makes it clear that Honda designers and engineers worked hard to make it their own. The 2024 Prologue will offer the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive. The single-motor EX and Touring trims will be front-drive, while the dual-motor EX, Touring, and Elite models are all-wheel-drive. The two-motor all-wheel-drive models will deliver 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Honda hasn't revealed the horsepower and torque ratings of the front-drive models. All Prologues will be fitted with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer up to 300 miles on a charge. Using GM's Ultium batteries, the Prologue can use DC fast charging at rates up to 155 kW. Honda hasn't announced charge times but it says the Prologue's battery pack can add 65 miles of range in about 10 minutes using a DC fast charger. The interior is pure Honda, including the brand's newest Google-based infotainment system. Two hot but affordable sports models take center stage in our road test segment. Co-Host Chris Teague puts the 2024 Acura Integra Type S through its paces in the challenging conditions of rural Maine. Host Jack Nerad did the same with the Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Premium Edition in the urban jungle of Southern California. In this week's news, the fuel economy rules proposed by the Biden Administration could add $3,000 to the price of the average car by 2032, according to information just released by a growing list of carmakers fighting against the new rules. You might call it the Rodney Dangerfield of sports coupes. The Toyota GR86, in the words of that fabled comedian, “don't get no respect,” but the fact is, it deserves some. Our Co-Host Chris Teague put a GR86 through its paces as summer transitioned to fall in Maine, and the car passed with flying (fall) colors. Toyota (Subaru?) added a bit more horsepower to the GR86 (BRZ) recently, and the results are palpable. And, more to the point, enjoyable. And if you want to talk about enjoyment, you should take a road trip like Host Jack Nerad just completed. He enlisted the all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia Capstone to be his family's ride of choice as they attended the Ft. Worth Stockyards Rodeo, the TCU-SMU football game, and a Rangers-Mariners baseball tilt at Globe Life Field. With all the comings and goings, the Sequoia proved to be an all-around champ. Comfortable, quiet, convenient, and fuel-efficient are just some of the positive adjectives that can be attached to the newest version of Toyota's full-size traditional SUV. If you'd like to know what cars, trucks, and SUVs really get their owners' heart rates pumping, we have the perfect guest for you this week. Frank Hanley is senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power. We'll talk with him about the results of the company's APEAL Study that measures car owners' emotional attachment to their cars. Diesmal geht es um die Freude an schnellen Formen und sportlichem Fahrspaß: Der spektakulär schnelle Supra und Japans bisher meistverkauftes Sportcoupé, die Celica, stehen im Mittelpunkt des nächsten Public Openings der Toyota Collection von 10 bis 14 Uhr auf dem Gelände von Toyota Deutschland in Köln.  Natürlich laden auch die neuen sportlichen Toyota GR Supra und GR86 zum Kennenlernen ein. Tatsächlich startete die erste von bis heute bereits fünf Generationen des Supra im Jahr 1978 ihre Karriere noch als Celica Supra (A40). Eric Penn joins Tim Keirnan and Ken Mayer to discuss the first customer experience phases of his new 2023 Subaru BRZ after a month of ownership. The "Toyobaru Twins" (Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ) are the same car with some slight differences. This vehicle is one of the best examples of "user-centered design" we have ever encountered in a product, and Tim owned the first generation for four blissful years. Eric has purchased the long-awaited and much celebrated second generation, and we go into intense detail on our first four defined phases of the customer experience: Encounter (02:44) Decision    (07:21) Purchase   (21:00) Initial Use  (43:00) We will record an episode about Eric's longitudinal use in February of 2024 so that Eric has a full 12 months of ownership under his belt for that. On this podcast we are nothing if not thorough. In summary, the 2023 BRZ (the second model year of the 2nd generation of the car) meets or exceeds almost every criterion for delighting Eric as customer/user. The car's designers and engineers improved on the few weaknesses from the first generation without compromising what made the first generation so terrific. From the seating position, to the razor sharp handling, to the improved human-machine interfaces in the cockpit, to the new, more powerful engine, everything about this car screams or subtly implies "made for driving enthusiasts of light weight, nimble sports cars." Neither Subaru nor Toyota invented us to be so positive about this vehicle. It is incredibly well-focused on delighting a well-defined customer target.

FOLLOW UP: FRANCE ISSUES ARREST WARRANT FOR GHOSNAuthorities in France have issued an international arrest warrant for Carlos Ghosn, in connection with £12.6 million payments made to Suhail Bahwan Automobiles, in Oman. The claim is money was funnelled illegally to the company which Ghosn took advantage of to use personally. There are another four other individuals also implicated. UK GOVERNEMENT MAKES AMENDMENTS TO HIGHWAY CODEThe Government has announced changes to the Highway Code, readying it for when we have self driving technology on the public roads. GOVERNMENT TO INTRODUCE CHARGING RELIABILITY LAWThe UK Government is set to introduce a new law, that will require rapid chargers to work as intended 99% of the time. This is all part of their strategy for creating a ‘world leading' charging infrastructure. GRIDSERVE OPENS NORWICH CHARGING FORECOURTGridserve has opened a new forecourt in Norwich, which is run on 100% renewable energy. There are 36 charging points, with 22 able to run up to 350kW. NEW CHARGING POINT RISE 33% IN LAST YEAROver the last year there has been a 33% rise in the number of charging points being installed, across the UK. 7,500 were added, taking the total up to 30,290. NEW NEW CAR NEWSBMW 7-Series -The latest version of the flagship car of the range has been revealed by BMW. Thanks to feedback from the US and China, the biggest markets for this car, the looks are more modern and dramatic. Inside you will be able to add a hose of toys and features, including a ‘cinema screen' for the rear passengers. There will be a host of powertrains, from mild hybrid petrol and diesels, PHEVs and full EV. The i7 will start at £108,305, no figure has been given for the PHEV but the existing models start between £73,305 and £80,405 depending on the variety you go for. The basis will be the Toyota platform, TNGA, which the Toyota bZ4x also utilises. The RZ was one of the 15 models Akio Toyoda had with him as he revealed the new strategy, recently. The e-TNGA platform has two motors, one for the front and one the back, with a split of 150kW and 80kW respectively. This gives a total power output of 309bhp and 320lb ft, resulting in a 0-62 of 5.6 seconds and a speed limited 99 mph. Official range is just over 250 miles and will be chargeable up to 150kW. No prices have yet been announced. One of the hottest trends in the industry is the of new smaller trucks. Hyundai not too long ago introduced its new unibody Santa Cruz. I recently reviewed it for a week and was enamored by the South Korean manufacturer's maiden voyage in the truck lightweight truck segment. Bruce and I also discuss the Santa Cruz and the pending arrival of other new trucks from Ford to Rivian, Chevrolet to Ram. And we also discuss top-10 finalists for World Car of the Year honors. In the garage this week Nicole has one car on the way out of production, the 2021 Mazda6 Signature and another on the way, the 2022 Toyota GR86. Sam had the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N with its new 8-spd dual clutch transmission that behaves just like a good manual would. Roberto got sit in but not drive the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq and only briefly drive the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt.The Bolt had to leave Robbie's driveway after barely 24 hrs because GM issued a recall of all the Bolts made so far to replace the batteries. The New York Auto Show got cancelled again because of Covid, but Genesis decided to release photos of its first EV that scheduled to appear there, the new GV60 and Robbie did some real-time photoshop work to change the color to something better suited to the brand. Another car that did make a NY debut even without an auto show is the 2023 Nissan 400Z which is basically unchanged from the Proto we saw last year.
