This week's guest is with one of the UK's leading scientists, immunologist Dr. Jenna Macciochi, who is also a mum of twins. This is an incredibly powerful episode about the tension between motherhood and work. So if you have ever felt pulled in multiple directions, then this episode is for you. It is in two halves. The first half is very personal from Dr. Jenna. She shares so courageously and honestly about her experience with burnout and how it was the start of a total realignment of her priorities. I found it incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking. I think you are going to love what Dr. Jenna shares. The second half is from her professional expertise, about winter bugs and what we can all be doing to stay as well as possible this winter. We chat about: What can happen if we don't look after our health The tension between motherhood and work How to use boundaries to reconcile this tension What to do to avoid getting ill this winter What to do if you do get ill And the answer to the question we all are asking: Is it true that we are all going to be more susceptible to winter bugs because we have been in lockdown and isolation? As always, we continue the conversation over on Instagram, so come and join us there. Almost half of British adults are not aware of government guidelines and 1-6 adults in the UK have low levels of vitamin D. Low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with low mood, a poor immune system, increased risk of respiratory infections, COVID-19 and also an increase in all cause mortality. We've also heard on the other hand that too much vitamin D can cause toxicity - but how strong is the research here? There is a lot of noise surrounding this vitamin -but what are the true health facts? How much should we be taking and what are our risks with taking too little? In today'd episode I speak to immunologist Dr Jenna Macciochi, who explains the latest research spanning this vitamin! I speak with Dr. Macciochi about the foundations of a healthy immune system: personalised nutrition, appropriate physical activity and stress management techniques, and adequate sleep. Note the use of language here - a key theme running through todays conversation is context. Something that is always lacking in conversations around nutrition and lifestyle. Another key theme from today is consistency. We simply have to be consistent in creating health.

In episode #7 of The Alex Manos Podcast I speak with Dr. Macciochi on immunity, leaky gut and silent/low-grade inflammation. A key take away from this conversation is around meal frequency and its role in reducing the inflammatory load, something that is becoming increasingly important in the modern world. Dr. Macciochi discusses the role of micronutrients (especially vitamins A & D), and, the role of dietary fibre in supporting a healthy gut-immune system. Dietary fibre increases the production of short chain fatty acids, which help maintain the integrity of the gut barrier, as well as helping regulate T-regulatory cells which help maintain a well regulated immune system as they have been shown to suppress the responses of other immune cells, including those that promote inflammation.
