You Don't Need Animal Foods To Get B12 Milton Mills, MD • https://www.preventionofdisease.org/milton-mills #MiltonMills #DiseasePrevention #Vegan Milton Mills, MD practices urgent care medicine in the Washington DC area, and has served previously as Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and as a member of the National Advisory Board, for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). He has been a major contributor to position papers presented by PCRM to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM's class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. Dr. Mills earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy. He frequently donates his time via practicing at free medical clinics, and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. He was featured in the recent attention-getting film “What the Health,” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan.” A major focus of Dr. Mills' patient advisement as well as his lecturing, is the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He notes that the scientific research literature shows plant-based diets as supporting better overall immune system function, and during work with HIV-positive and AIDS patients at clinics, he's observed that those who go vegetarian seem to improve, with increased energy and higher T-cell counts. He therefore hopes throughout the future to examine further the relationships between diet and immune functionality, particularly the effects of plant-based eating choices upon outcomes forHIV-positive patients. Lillie Kane is a certified health, nutrition, and life coach, as well as certified Keto Nutrition Health Coach. Lillie herself eats a hypercarnivore lifestyle to maintain her weight, improve her cognitive function, build strength, and stay energized! While diet is important, she also does other lifestyle habits that contribute to her health and happiness like strength training, intermittent fasting, giving gratitude and of course, taking walks outside in nature! Lillie believes that we are all unique- what works for one person, does not mean it will work for someone else, so her approach with her clients is to be open to new things, always prepared for change, and most importantly, keep the right mindset. Lillie approaches helping others with low carbohydrate and carnivore lifestyles because she believes in following what our ancestors ate, which is the most healing and appropriate for most people. However, since there is no "one shoe fits all", she guides her clients to figure out what works best for them, to make the most sustainable lifestyle that they will enjoy and help them thrive! Not One Legitimate Study In 70 Years Showing Any Health Benefit To Eating Animal Foods GlenMerzer • https://www.glenmerzer.com • Book – Food Is Climate #GlenMerzer#ClimateEmergency #ClimateChange Glen Merzer is a playwright, screenwriter, and author of the book Food is Climate. Food Is Climate: A Response to Al Gore, Bill Gates, Paul Hawken, and the Conventional Narrative on Climate Change. The Climate Emergency threatens civilization. All life forms on the planet depend now on humanity to undo the harm it has done. Unfortunately, those who have been leading the charge to address climate change, such as Al Gore, have not been telling us the whole truth. They have continued to ignore its leading cause. Food Is Climate gives us hope that the crisis can be addressed--in a way that will improve human health--but only if there's a grassroots movement to do the right thing, because clearly politicians and even environmental organizations have refused to lead. Glen began his career as a stand-up comic in San Francisco before devoting himself to playwriting. He wrote for network television for many years before going into a career writing books that advocate the plant-exclusive diet. Glen's first novel, Off the Reservation, chronicles the journey of a vegan congressman from Bloomington, Indiana, who runs for president. Off the Reservation contains twenty bonus, delicious, low-fat vegan recipes by Joanna Samorow-Merzer. Three of Glen's plays have been published by Samuel French. His prize-winning works have entertained audiences Off-Broadway, at Regional Theatres, and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The arena of sustainability is a complex one – and oversimplifying it by encouraging our clients to eat less animal foods and more plant foods is not the answer. Instead of nitpicking single foods or food groups, the most powerful ways our clients can eat more sustainably are by avoiding overconsumption and minimising food waste. In this podcast, Dr Joanna McMillan dives into new sustainability research that combines the environmental and nutritional qualities of different foods in the Australian diet into one score. Jo highlights that it is more than possible to have a sustainable, nutritious diet that incorporates foods from all food groups, so we can make real, meaningful inroads to better the health of our clients and the planet. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ranking animal foods based on suffering and GHG emissions, published by VilleSokk on the Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction I created a simple web-based tool which ranks animal species according to the harm caused by consuming them. The user can specify the relative priority of two subscales of harm: animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions. Numerous analyses have been published on how much suffering is caused by eating various animals. For example by Peter Hurford, Brian Tomasik, Charity Entrepreneurship and Dominik Peters. Results of these analyses hint at the small animal replacement problem which is the concern that advocating for reduced meat consumption for environmental reasons leads people to replace beef with smaller animals such as chicken and fish. This increases total suffering because more farmed animals are consumed for the same amount of calories. I was inspired by Dominik Peters' tool and was wondering if a similar ranking could be developed which accounts for animal suffering, greenhouse gas emissions and human health. My main motivation was to better understand the climate change/animal welfare trade-off when deciding which animals to leave off our plates. Due to difficulties with modeling health effects I eventually narrowed down the harms to just animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions and developed a tool based on Dominik's model. Methods A simple model is used to calculate the animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions subscale scores of each species in the data set. The subscale scores are then combined into a single score which is used to rank the species. The animal suffering subscale estimates the number of hours spent on a farm to produce 2000 kcal of food energy. The climate change subscale estimates CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions produced per 2000 kcal of food. The suffering subscale can be adjusted according to the relative suffering intensity of the species and brain size/neuron count. Both subscales can be adjusted by supply and demand elasticity. The subscale scores are exponentiated using the subscale priorities that the user has provided and then multiplied to get a single score (weighted product model). The combined scores are normalised to the 0-100 range and used to display a ranking of the species based on the estimated harm. The user interface allows the user to set the subscale priorities, toggle the adjustments, change the relative suffering intensities and choose the brain weighting function. The goal is to enable the user to specify their beliefs if they don't agree with the default parameters. When playing around with the sliders it seems that the model is generally consistent with the welfare/climate trade-off. If climate is prioritised, ruminants rank higher on the combined scale. If welfare is prioritised, smaller animals rank higher on the combined scale. Limitations The model does not consider indirect effects on wild animal welfare. The suffering of wild animals could significantly exceed that of farmed animals. Indirect effects of farming contribute to wild animal suffering. It would be interesting to also analyse how changes in animal consumption affect wild animals through indirect effects on feed crop production. It is difficult to come up with meaningful subscale priorities. It would make sense to measure the disvalue of emissions and suffering based on the underlying values which cause us to be concerned about these issues in the first place. If, for example I am motivated by improving welfare, it would be helpful to estimate the welfare impacts of climate change and factory farming on a common scale which seems difficult. Heather Browning's doctoral thesis outlines several issues with common methods of measuring animal welfare. This includes the hours lived on a farm and relative suf...

Today we had a great conversation with Melissa Henig who is the author of Raw Paleo: The Extreme Advantages of Eating Paleo Foods in the Raw. Many people eat raw and living foods. These are typically uncooked or unheated fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts typically. Some time ago we had Aajonus Vonderplanitz on the show discussing his penchant for eating raw animal foods. These foods he claims helped to heal his gut and turn his cancer around. I cannot verify this was true but that's what his claim was. He advocated eating raw organ meats as well like liver, splean, lungs, brain and more all raw. It's extremely fascinating albeit totally disgusting as well. Melissa Henig in this show talks about recipes she makes that include both raw vegan options along with raw animal based options...which are sometimes called Raw Primal or just the Primal Diet. There are a great many people out there that will say we need to avoid eating the blood of animals (like it says in the Bible) and avoid all animal foods completely. Then there are people on the other side. We've interviewed our share of both. Our mission here is not to tell you which one you should adhere to but to talk with different people of opposing viewpoints and let them share their story. Melissa combines both the vegan and vegetarian with raw animal based dishes. She talked about eating a raw diet while pregnant and how her pregnancy went while eating this kind of "extreme" diet. There may be something here for you, there may not. What I do know for sure though is that you will not get this kind of information anywhere else and definitely not in school. Amanda Atkins reversed her severe Type 2 Diabetes along with brain fog, tingly fingers, and more via a low-carbohydrate diet. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/amanda[2:00] Amanda gives some context to her reversal of Type 2 Diabetes and her health history. [4:40] Amanda's doctors never gave a very good explanation or any mention of food in regards to her childless state or her other ailments. "No one mentioned food." [7:45] Amanda woke up one morning in 2014 blind in one eye. [10:20] Amanda's fingers and feet were starting to get tingly. Her ankles were swollen. And she dealt with carpal tunnel syndrome and brain fog. [11:45] Amanda tried a 1200 calorie low-fat diet. She lost some weight with it but she also got a dry cough. [12:55] Amanda's fasting blood sugar was 18.4%! She had severe diabetes. [14:45] After being diagnosed, Amanda searched online for "severe diabetes" and she found the following paper: Effects of a low-carbohydrate diet on glycemic control in outpatients with severe type 2 diabetes https://nutritionandmetabolism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1743-7075-6-21 [17:00] The paper she found recommended limiting fruit (and other foods). [20:00] The paper Amanda found showed terrific success improving glycemic control in Type 2 Diabetics even by restricting to 90-170 grams of carbohydrate per day. But Amanda found that some people in the study restricted even further and had even better success. And the health improvements in this study were achieved without that much weight loss. [22:40] One woman in the paper dropped her A1C from 14.4% to 6.1% in just six months. She was restricting carbs to 11% of her diet and was walking an hour a day a few days a week. Within hours of her new Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, Amanda had a new plan. [24:50] Amanda immediately understood three new principles: 1) It's not about weight. 2) Don't fear saturated fat. 3) Your HbA1c is tightly tied to what you eat. Using these principles, she halved her blood sugar in a few days. [30:20] In 6 weeks, Amanda's HbA1c was down to 8%. At 6 months, it was down to 5.5%. It has stayed around there ever since. [32:00] What foods does Amanda base her low carbohydrate diet around? [42:00] It used to be hard (even at age 17) for Amanda to go up 20 steps. It is easier for her now at age 60, now that she has modified her diet. [44:30] Amanda's skin is not nearly as susceptible to sunburn anymore. [56:40] "There is a whole universe out there of people who are dying to help you." [1:11:00] Does Amanda consider herself cured of her conditions? [1:16:15] Now that she has improved her health, what is one thing Amanda enjoys doing that she couldn't do before?
Sally Fallon was one of the people that founded the Weston A Price Foundation in 1999, a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing information about the healing power of animal foods. A dentist from Cleveland, Ohio, named Weston Price, was the inspiration for the WAPF to form. He authored a book called "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" where he documented various indigenous cultures worldwide that had perfect dentition and skeletal structure. He credited their overall robustness to their natural diets. Raw dairy, bone broths, organ meats, fruits, vegetables, and whole foods were what supported their vital health. In this interview Sally speaks on the importance of animal foods in the diet. I also ask her questions from a Q&A. Hey guys! This was such a fun podcast! I got to chat with my friend, Kurt Yazici. He has a brand called “Karnivore Kurt”. His story, his book, his brand and his methods to improve overall health are incredibly fascinating. If you’re looking for answers with your dietary health, easing your anxiety or clearing your skin, he has an alternative that not many are talking about. In fact, when I first heard about the Carnivore Diet, I thought it had something to do with hunting. But after he explained and educated me on the diet and the benefits, I thought it would be fun to bring him on to the podcast to explore this topic. I know that sometimes, this can be a divisive topic. At first, I thought, “That’s kind of weird… you’re only going to eat meat?” Then, as I started to learn more about some of the benefits that he’s experienced, it felt worthy of sharing. Even if you aren’t looking to change your diet, there are unheard perspectives in here that I think would be interesting to listen to with an open mind.
Could eating vegetables actually be BAD for you? In this episode I sit down with Carnivore Diet specialist Kurt Yazici, and we talk about the Carnivore diet. You may have heard about the Carnivore Diet on Joe Rogan's podcast, or even seen him post about it on Instagram. Basically, the diet consists of eating 100% meat, no fruits and vegetables, and drinking nothing but water. In this episode, Kurt breaks down what the diet is, and why it is suppose to be so good for you, and I ask a lot of common questions around the diet. Please Note: Josh Forti / Think Different Theory does NOT endorse the carnivore diet, and neither Josh or any of the staff at TDT have tried it. This is for educational purposes only. We strongly encourage you to do your own research. Paul Saladino is the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He is board-certified in psychiatry and completed his residency at the University of Washington. He attended medical school at the University of Arizona where he worked with Dr. Andrew Weil focusing on integrative medicine and nutritional biochemistry. His new incredible book called the "Carnivore Code” just came out last month and has been climbing towards a best seller— it may already be by the time this comes out. Paul is a lot of fun, he’s super charismatic, full of energy and passionate about living what he calls, “a radical life” through movement, spending time in nature & cultivating mindfulness. This conversation is science-heavy people— so be ready. We get down on so much insightful information such as: Pauls backstory + how he arrived at the Carnivore diet His experience doing a Vegan diet His hypothesis behind proposed issues in digesting meat Why being intentional with your diet is so important Why it’s so important to regard the history of meat-eating and it’s valuable play to optimizing our health and longevity Why having an ACIDIC stomach is essential for healthy digestion and health overall The ESSENTIAL mineral we need to support optimal acidity The difference between the BIO-AVAILABILITY in plant foods vs animal foods Some of the anti-nutrients that plants possess What does the Carnivore entail + The different degrees of eating a Carnivore diet His hypothesis on why he believes plants are “fall back foods” How the indigenous around the world detoxify plants before eating them How eating meat helped our brains to develop How to CORRECTLY eat a Carnivore diet for optimal health Who is the Carnivore diet for? The flaw with Epidemiology studies “ How to SPEND your calories in your health’s best interest Your microbiome on a Carnivore diet and the lack of fiber in it Polyphenols what are they? What is their play on our health? And so much more. One thing I love about having a podcast that is geared to optimize your Self-Development, Life Performance + Health, is having the opportunity to bring on real experts like Paul, who can speak with evidence-based information on subjects in health/wellness that could be really valuable to our optimization. In my opinion, to continue our growth + to accelerate our greatest performance in life, its important to keep an open mind so that we can invite new information that may be useful to our process. It’s like Bruce Lee says: “Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own.” There are so many people who are thriving on the Carnivore diet so my goal with this episode to give you the most scientific based information on this diet through Paul’s expertise in this area as it may be useful to you. I will say moving forward on all health/diet talks- this is episode is meant to educate not to prescribe- that’s for your doctor only. I genuinely loved this talk with Paul and think you will too, regardless of your diet preferences. oils shut down mitochondrial metabolism and can trigger apoptosis As your cells demand more and more sugar, the brain responds by keeping your fasting blood sugar up in an unhealthy range and this is what is diagnosed as diabetes Vegetable oils play a role in diabetes Short fasts can be a part of a healthy lifestyle but a lot of people aren’t even healthy enough to fast Eating between meals blocks fat burning You shouldn’t need a snack if you have body fat People underestimate how many calories they eat a day, and these hidden calories come from snacking There’s a difference between burning fat and burning body fat There are toxins in the vegetable oils that have accumulated in body fat, so when you fast and start burning body fat, you release them and get a pro-inflammatory effect If you have toxic body fat and you try and push through to fast, it could be harmful The reason some people can’t access their body fat goes beyond lowering insulin Some people aren’t even ready to go low-carb Carbs are not the enemy, if you do it right, you can have your carbs and lose weight and be healthy MCTs can be used directly by the brain for fuel Your body makes most of its antioxidants The antioxidants in food probably have a negligible contribution in your cells If you do carnivore, you should be doing it nose-to-tail Cate’s 4 pillars for a maximally healthy diet The RDAs are almost irrelevant Ancestral diets were based on farming, culinary practices, and traditions Our intuitions were so good for so long and we’ve lost our ways Diet can impact how our children physically “just don’t eat meat and you’ll be fine” can turn into a really unhealthy diet DHA requirements go down when you remove vegetable oils Epidemiology is just like “voting” on what a healthy diet is and shouldn’t be what we make dietary recommendations on When we eat damaging dietary fats for the brain we see mental illness Stress isn’t a new phenomenon, we are just not wired to deal with it with the responds by keeping your fasting blood sugar up in an unhealthy range and this is what is diagnosed as diabetes Vegetable oils play a role in diabetes Short fasts can be a part of a healthy lifestyle but a lot of people aren’t even healthy enough to fast Eating between meals blocks fat burning You shouldn’t need a snack if you have body fat People underestimate how many calories they eat a day, and these hidden calories come from snacking There’s a difference between burning fat and burning body fat There are toxins in the vegetable oils that have accumulated in body fat, so when you fast and start burning body fat, you release them and get a pro-inflammatory effect If you have toxic body fat and you try and push through to fast, it could be harmful The reason some people can’t access their body fat goes beyond lowering insulin Some people aren’t even ready to go low-carb Carbs are not the enemy, if you do it right, you can have your carbs and lose weight and be healthy MCTs can be used directly by the brain for fuel Your body makes most of its antioxidants The antioxidants in food probably have a negligible contribution in your cells If you do carnivore, you should be doing it nose-to-tail Cate’s 4 pillars for a maximally healthy diet The RDAs are almost irrelevant Ancestral diets were based on farming, culinary practices, and traditions Our intuitions were so good for so long and we’ve lost our ways Diet can impact how our children physically look and grow Feed your genetics what they are expecting to receive You have a gene in your bones for growing more bone matrix The raw materials in our food can act as switches for our genes Cate tells people to supplement with vitamins (e.g. vitamin D), minerals (e.g. calcium), and superfoods (e.g. probiotics) if your diet is not rich in what you are supplementing with Vegans who believe “just don’t eat meat and you’ll be fine” can turn into a really unhealthy diet DHA requirements go down when you remove vegetable oils Epidemiology is just like “voting” on what a healthy diet is and shouldn’t be what we make dietary recommendations on When we eat damaging dietary fats for the brain we see mental illness Stress isn’t a new phenomenon, we are just not wired to deal with it with the food we’re eating Humans are being built wrong and if we continue down this path, humans will become extinct Where to find Dr. Cate
