In this compelling episode, Dr. Vera Tarman interviews Dr. Thomas Seyfried, a pioneer in the field of cancer metabolism. Dr. Seyfried challenges the mainstream view of cancer as a genetic disease and presents strong evidence that cancer is fundamentally a mitochondrial metabolic disorder. Dr. Thomas N. Seyfried is a distinguished American biologist and professor at Boston College, renowned for his pioneering work in cancer metabolism. With a Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and postdoctoral training in neurochemistry at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Seyfried has dedicated his career to exploring the metabolic underpinnings of cancer and other neurological diseases. Dr. Seyfried is best known for his groundbreaking book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer (2012), where he presents compelling evidence that cancer is primarily a mitochondrial metabolic disorder rather than a genetic one. This perspective builds upon the early 20th-century findings of Otto Warburg, who observed that cancer cells rely heavily on fermentation for energy production, even in the presence of oxygen—a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. Dr. Seyfried's research suggests that targeting cancer's metabolic dependencies, such as glucose and glutamine, through dietary interventions like the ketogenic diet, could offer non-toxic therapeutic strategies. We explore: How cancer cells fuel themselves differently from healthy cells The connection between sugar, ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and cancer growth The Warburg Effect and the roles of glucose and glutamine in tumor development Whether refined sugar is carcinogenic like tobacco Why Dr. Seyfried believes ketogenic diets and caloric restriction can be powerful cancer therapies How his views align with metabolic psychiatry (Dr. Chris Palmer's Brain Energy) The controversial yet promising approach of "press-pulse" therapy The potential for preventing cancer through dietary change Follow: https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/biology/people/faculty-directory/thomas-seyfried.html https://tomseyfried.com The content of our show is educational only. What if everything we thought we knew about cancer was wrong? For decades, scientists have debated what really causes cancer. Is it genetic mutations, as the Somatic Mutation Theory suggests? Is it a metabolic dysfunction, as the Metabolic Theory argues? Or is there a deeper, overlooked truth—one that could redefine cancer treatment as we know it? In this episode, Dr. Ralph Moss and Ben Moss break down the battle between competing cancer theories, why conventional wisdom is being challenged, and what the latest research is uncovering about cancer stem cells, metabolism, and the Warburg Effect.

In this episode, our co-hosts Victoria Field, Dominic D'Agostino, PhD, and Angela Poff, PhD, discuss two recent scientific studies that focus on the potential metabolic connections to neurodegenerative diseases.Study 1: Warburg-like metabolic transformation underlies neuronal degeneration in sporadic Alzheimer's diseaseThe study delves into the molecular changes causing a neuron's transition from healthy to degenerative, as seen in sporadic Alzheimer's, which is the most prevalent form of Alzheimer's disease and isn't directly inherited but arises from a mix of genetic and environmental factors. It proposes that metabolic changes in neurons due to altered gene expression might play a role in the disease's onset. Today's discussion touches upon the similarities between the findings in this study and the well-established Warburg Effect seen in cancer. This study may provide a clue to the molecular mechanisms behind Alzheimer's disease and open the door for exploration of potential treatments.Study 2: Phase II study of ketogenic diets in relapsing multiple sclerosis: safety, tolerability, and potential clinical benefitsThis study measured the impact of a dietitian-guided ketogenic diet on MS patients on several markers including body composition, mood, mental health, and physical stamina. Our co-hosts discuss these findings as well as the secondary benefits of ketogenic therapies due to reduced MS symptoms, and the unique challenges of dietary vs pharmaceutical trials, such as ensuring accuracy, participant compliance and how to measure the intervention's effectiveness. If you'd like to read the papers referenced above, please find them here: Study 1 & Study 2In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. An Israeli study is saying that exercise, the real vitamin E, can reduce your risk of cancer by 72%. The study looked specifically at muscle building exercises. You may not know who Otto Warburg was, but he had a theory that cancer cells are different from normal cells. Normal cells thrive on protein and fat, whereas cancer cells feed on sugar. The premise of the Warburg Effect is that the more muscle you have, the more bins you have for storing glucose. Dr. Martin has often talked about having larger storage bins for glucose and that's why muscle building exercises are the most important exercises you can do, especially when it comes to preventing cancer.

He holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Columbia University. Apple is the author of Ravenous American Parent, and Schlepping Through the Alps. He has published short stories, personal essays, satires, and journalistic features on a wide range of topics. Schlepping Through the Alps was a finalist for the PEN America Award for a first work of nonfiction. In this episode, Sam talks about the inspiration behind his book Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet. We dive into Otto Warburg's work and how the Nazis protected him for his cancer science. Sam explains how sugar can promote cancer growth and what steps you can take to lower your insulin levels. Plus, Gary Taubes inspired him. Sam was really surprised to learn that that cancer was associated with diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. He wanted to dig further on the connection between cancer and metabolic disease.  [02:10] The Nazis Protected Warburg For His Cancer Research In 1923, Warburg makes this famous discovery called the Warburg Effect. Cancer cells take up a lot more glucose than other cells and burn it without oxygen; they ferment it, just like microorganisms do. Warburg also has made other discoveries about how cells breathe and use oxygen. He wins the Nobel Prize in 1931. In 1933, the Nazis come along. Despite having a Jewish father and being openly gay, the Nazis protected Warburg because they were interested in his cancer research. [06:50] Warburg's Studies Started To Disappear After The War After the war, Warburg's cancer research really starts to disappear. Australia in the 1950s famously discovered the structure of DNA. Eventually, we had a new sort of genetic understanding of cancer where we can now identify specific mutations. So, how cells take up glucose and shift their metabolism was considered irrelevant because of the study of genetics. Warburg's studies take peoeple back to diet, and there's a huge bias against taking diet seriously. [12:20] What Sugar Does To Promote Cancer Growth If cancer is about these metabolic shifts inside of a cell, what is it about the way we eat that affects the way a cell eats? In America, one out of three women are diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime. For men, it's about one in two. Cancer is closely linked to obesity. 13 of the deadliest cancers have been solidly linked to obesity. Sam wanted to know if obesity was causing cancer or if something was driving both. Elevated levels of the hormone insulin are responsible for obesity and give microscopic cancers a chance to grow and thrive. What is it about our diet that causes insulin to rise? Sugar! The increase in sugar consumption maps pretty closely to the rise of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. [19:30] How A Keto Diet That Will Help You Prevent Cancer Sam is a huge believer that keto is a logical way to prevent cancer. The single most important thing you can do to improve your odds for cancer prevention is to keep your insulin levels low. Hyperinsulinemia promotes the growth of cancer. So, it's important to follow a diet that keeps your insulin levels down. [22:20] Intermittent Fasting Is Another Great Way To Lower Insulin Intermittent fasting is one very successful strategy for keeping insulin down. If you can fast consistently, it seems to work quite effectively on lowering insulin. Fasting can lead to weight loss because it lowers insulin levels in the body. Sam wants to point out that thin people can still have insulin resistance. In some ways, being naturally thin can actually be a disadvantage because you can't store subcutaneous fat. [26:30] How To Optimize Insulin and Glucose Levels To Be Proactive Instead of Reactive You can't outrun a bad diet. However, exercise can help you feel better and make you more inspired to follow a low-carb diet. After workouts, you can be inspired to eat healthily and continue to feel good. Once you understand that sugar is linked to cancer, it should help you ditch it during mealtime. [38:30] Finding Therapies To Target Specific Cancer Mutations When cancer can eat lots of glucose, it's no longer thinking about dying; it's thinking about doing a lot more things. Based on which particular mutation you have, the oncologist will devise a treatment. Unfortunately, targeted therapies to specific mutations haven't been as successful as we would have liked. However, there are some cases where therapies will successfully target mutations. [42:25] The Best Preventative Measures To Preventing Cancer In The Future Eliminate sugar from your diet. Definitely eliminate liquid sugar from your diet. If you are insulin resistant, you need to reduce those insulin levels. Stop smoking. Cut out refined carbohydrates. We also discuss Hitler's fascination with cancer research, which allowed Warburg to survive the Nazi era even though he was Jewish and gay, and Hitler's infamous addiction to sugar. This implies that instead of aggressive chemo and radiation treatments designed to attack cancer at the genetic level, dietary modification could be the most effective strategy. This aligns with the Warburg Effect principle, which suggests cancer cells feed preferentially on glucose over regular cells. The idea is that starving cancer cells of glucose with fasting and ketogenic eating patterns makes it possible to shrink tumors and heal. To put it simply, metabolic diseases are most effectively treated through metabolic treatments. Enjoy this hard-hitting show! TIMESTAMPS: There is another avenue to explore when you get a cancer diagnosis. [01:46] Cancer is a metabolic disease rather than a genetic disease. [03:46] The Warburg Effect observes that cancer cells feed preferentially on glucose. [08:46] What is Dr. Cate's new job that brought her to Florida? She left the hospital job because her main interest is keeping people healthy.  [10:47] The current system is not keeping people healthy. It boils down to the primary care doctor. [18:32] There is a new method of primary care which can be a more personal relationship with the patient and save money.  [23:33] False positives can be deadly. There are many different ways to look at what cancer is. [24:45] There was much good research in the 1930's and 1940's learning about cancer and much of that has been forgotten. [32:46] If Brad got a cancer diagnosis today, the first thing she would suggest he do, would be Go over the diet to see if he were doing something wrong and watch a video by Dr. Seyfried. [36:32] Are all cancers the same? They are all downstream from metabolism. [43:12] Doctors who are studying cancers have varied opinions on the frequency of testing. [48:39] People are so confused. Who do you listen to? [50:09] The four pillars of human nutrition are fresh foods, fermented foods, meat on the bone, and organ meats. [52:05] Other than diet, we still must look at daily movement and good sleep habits. The vegetable oils promote cancer. [56:47] Canola oil is molecularly unstable and when you have too much of it in your diet, it destabilizes the DNA in your body. [01:00:02] Would it be undisputed that a dietary modification leading to increased HDL and reduced triglycerides is a positive? What do we learn from our blood chemistry?  [01:09:00] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com Brad's Shopping page Paleo Clinic in Hungary Warburg Effect Deep Nutrition Dr. Cate Shanahan ABC Fine Wines and Spirits Primal Prescription Cancer is a Metabolic Disease The Fatburn Fix Biology of Belief Ageless Body, Timeless Mind Ancestral Supplements QUOTES: "You could have a hard drive that has a glitch, but if you have a really good operating system, you'd never know it." All platforms / Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.substack.com/p/sapple Sam Apple is the author of Ravenous: Otto Warburg, The Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection. Otto Warburg was a Nobel-Prize winning German scientist during the era of Hitler and the Nazi's and he was the first person to put the metabolic story of cancer on the map. The famous “Warburg Effect” that shows how cancer cells have an increase in glucose uptake even in the presence of oxygen, is named after him. It was a fascinating conversation talking about how the story of cancer research has evolved - how cancer cells eat to the discovery of oncogenes to coming full circle and making the connection between the two, and what the debate still holds in the story. We also talk about how cancer cells take up a lot of glucose, feed on sugar, and the connection between obesity and cancer. I hope you enjoy the conversation! Episode Highlights [04:00] Maggie's Journey with Cancer In 2018, Maggie was diagnosed with lung cancer and was told that she had less than a year to live.  At first, Maggie accepted her fate, but she started to learn more about how she can help her body heal.  She took up fasting, a ketogenic diet, organic foods, and metabolic treatments. A year after her diagnosis, she was cancer-free.  While Maggie is not dealing with cancer anymore, she has been dealing with the effects of cancer medicine that was used on her.  Cancer treatment often feels too rushed. It would be better to spread out treatments and lower their dosage.  [08:27] How Maggie's Cancer Affected Brad Brad tried to hide how much Maggie's cancer impacted him emotionally.  At the same time, he felt that Maggie was strong enough to face and survive cancer.  He learned all about metabolic treatments through Maggie and served as her reminder.  Brad even started eating Maggie's diet and fasted with her. [12:13] How Fasting Can Help Before Treatments Maggie used to think eating healthy was good. After a tumour surgery, she was vomiting and sweating. However, she tried fasting before the surgery and found that she felt great after the procedure. Fasting is known to be able to “close” normal cells while the cancer cells are still active and looking for energy. When exposed to radiation, the cancer cells get more affected. Clinical research takes around 17 years before becoming part of clinical practice. [15:39] Genetics and Epigenetics Combining hyperbaric therapy, a strict diet, and exogenous ketones can make a big difference. Yet, this practice is not common in cancer treatment.  The industry focuses more on DNA, even though there have been more discoveries about biochemistry since then.  Genetics and epigenetics are different. The former is about the genes themselves, while the latter looks at what turns the genes on and off.  Our environment and behaviour affect the way our genes work. Differentiation of cells is the true cause of aging. [18:49] The Warburg Effect Cancers can and will change their way of using energy. Even when oxygen is available, cancer cells use fermentation, which is not as efficient. The Warburg effect is already a fact. What's not being studied is why this is happening.  There is the genetic theory where genes mutate and cause cell changes, while the other theory is the other way around.  Cutting off the cancer cells' food source is the start. This includes glucose, glutamine, and so much more.  You can block cancer cell growth with diet, off label drugs, and specific protocols for specific cancers. Learn more about these in the full episode!  [24:48] Why Starving Cancer Can Help  The biggest criticism of starving cancer is that cancer cells can adapt to different metabolic pathways. While starving cancer may not lead to curing it, it can help you buy time. The drug protocols have lower side effects than traditional therapy and radiation surgery. [25:48] How to Use Press Pulse  Due to cancer's adaptability, you can expect to change protocols every so often.  Maggie shares that press pulse can be helpful.  This is using a certain protocol first, then switching to something else once cancer adapts and eventually reintroducing the first protocol.  [27:57] Always Be Vigilant  Brad cautions people not to think they're cured of cancer and go back to unhealthy foods and habits.  We all have some cancer cells. Your immune system needs to be strong enough to fight against it. Even if your cancer markers are gone, retaining a ketogenic diet can still be helpful. Exogenous ketones are not fermentable as a food source for cancer.  [33:05] Maggie and Brad's Documentary, CanceRevolution Maggie and Brad's documentary about cancer includes guests who are at the forefront of cancer research and people who have experienced cancer. The documentary is still a work in progress. Donations are highly appreciated. This is all about sharing the metabolic approach to cancer and understanding how cancer works. In the medical profession, doctors can lose their license if they go all-in on the metabolic approach, even if it has been proven effective. The profession has shown that money drives what is promoted or not. Thus, we need to be proactive and take ownership of our health. [42:36] Take Ownership of Your Health While somatic mutation, genetic theory, and metabolic theory are not yet proven, technologies can be built around it to prove it. For example, the PET scan is a cancer diagnostics tool based on the Warburg Effect.  As a patient, you have to be your own advocate and not just blindly listen to doctors. Read books and clinical research.  Remember that you're in control of your body.  7 Powerful Quotes  [9:18] “When, we were together, I just always had this feeling that she was going to make it through. I don't know why, but I was just like — I knew my wife. I knew how strong she was. And if anyone is going to fight this disease, it's her.” — Bradley    [25:05] “I was given the six to eight months to live. My starving cancer bought me another three years of life. This is time to address the next pathway when it comes up and to wait for the next conventional therapy that might help me and all the new research that's coming out. Though it's not going to cure your cancer, it's going to buy you time and buy you incredible quality of life.” — Maggie    [28:30] “It's really hard to be completely cured. Your cancer is always somewhere. We all have some. My immune system is holding its own, whilst Maggie's wasn't. That's basically what happened is her immune system couldn't fight it off anymore.” — Bradley   [32:21] “So having these exogenous ketones can really help just for athletes, as well as cancer patients, but it's really — it's teaching your body to be metabolically flexible.” — Lisa   [34:12] “...she's [Dr Nasha Winters] lived such a powerful life helping others. She was diagnosed too late in her progression to ever receive chemotherapy. And I think that's really what we can all strive for is even if scans aren't perfect, you can still live such a long, full life and don't give up hope.” — Maggie    [49:32] “One of the things that Maggie and I tell try and tell everyone is you have to be — as a patient, you have to be your own advocate. Do not just listen to what your doctor is saying — your oncologist or any doctor. They only meet with you for a half hour, right? Like Maggie sees her oncologist for like about a half hour once every three months.” — Bradley   [55:11] “I'm not unlucky. There are very clear therapeutic things that I can do, that I did to get cancer, that I can do to get out of it. And we need to promote this message of you're in control of your medical destiny. Don't just listen to somebody else who tells you it's a lost cause.” — Maggie Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! Sam Apple is the author of the book Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection, published in May 2021. In this episode, Sam describes the fascinating life story of Otto Warburg, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who, despite being both Jewish and gay, survived Nazi Germany because of his valuable research on cellular metabolism and cancer. Sam describes Warburg's observation that cancer cells consume large amounts of glucose anaerobically – a phenomenon subsequently known as the “Warburg Effect” – and relates how Warburg's seminal work on this topic was largely forgotten after the discovery of oncogenes, only to regain relevance decades later within the field of cancer biology. Sam sheds light on the current debate around Warburg's interpretation of the causes of cancer, and Peter gives his personal take on the matter. Finally, Peter and Sam tie it all together with a discussion about cancer prevention, the role of hyperinsulinemia, and the link between dietary sugar and cancer. We discuss: Sam's interest in Otto Warburg and work as a writer [2:30]; Otto Warburg's dedication to science and his complicated life in Germany [14:00]; Warburg's interest in cancer and early discoveries about cellular consumption of oxygen [23:00]; The role models who fueled Warburg's desire to make a great discovery [34:15]; How Warburg described the primary and secondary causes of cancer [42:15]; Warburg's Nobel Prize in 1931 [45:45]; Warburg's life and work during WWII in Nazi Germany [46:30]; Warburg's research in hydrogen transfers and coenzymes—his best science? [59:45]; Warburg's decision to stay in Germany after WWII [1:03:30]; Discovery of oncogenes in the 1970s and the decline in interest in Warburg's ideas [1:07:30]; The renaissance of Warburg's ideas on cancer metabolism and a new explanation for the Warburg Effect [1:13:45]; The argument against the Warburg Effect as a primary cause of cancer and the potential role hyperinsulinemia [1:21:15]; Identifying primary and secondary causes of cancer for the purpose of prevention [1:27:00]; The link between sugar, fructose, and cancer [1:35:30]; Sam's reflections on the work that went into Ravenous [1:39:45]; More View the Show Notes Page for This Episode Become a Member to Receive Exclusive Content Learn More About Peter Attia Sign Up to Receive Peter's Weekly Newsletter Connect With Peter on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & YouTube

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Sam Apple. He is on the faculty of the MA in Science Writing and MA in Writing programs at Johns Hopkins. Prior to his arrival at Johns Hopkins, Apple taught creative writing and journalism at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years. In recent years, he has primarily written about science and health. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Los Angeles Times, The Financial Times Magazine, ESPN The Magazine, The MIT Technology Review, and McSweeney's, among many other publications. Tune in as we chat about fasting, therapies for cancer, and the importance of exercise. Qi Chen revealed the mechanisms of action for IVC. The ascorbate-generated peroxide is essential in exerting anti-tumor effects. IVC is multiple-targeting and causes genotoxic and metabolic stress that make cancer cells more susceptible than normal cells. The differentiated sensitivity has a root in the Warburg Effect.Qi's research on IVC and cancer treatment has been widely recognized by the academic and scientific society. The work has been featured in prestigious journals, and reported by national and international health media.Qi Chen's lab documented that the combination of IVC with chemotherapies had synergistic effects in tumor inhibition. With collaboration with clinicians, Qi translated the positive animal studies into clinical trials. A Phase I/II study in stage III and IV ovarian cancer patients showed that adding IVC to standard platinum/taxane chemotherapy was safe and well-tolerated. In addition, it reduced toxic side effects associated with chemotherapy. Time to disease relapse/progress trended towards prolongation. We also conducted a Phase I/II study in locally advanced and metastatic pancreatic cancer. IVC did not interfere with pharmacokinetics of chemotherapeutic drugs, and potentially improved progress free survival.

M., Reynier, P., Lenaers, G., Chrast, R., Tricaud, N. Abstract: Whether glial cells use a particular metabolism to support axonal metabolism and function remains controversial. We show here that the deletion of PKM2, an enzyme essential for the Warburg effect, in mature myelinating Schwann cells (mSC) of mice leads to a deficit of lactate in these cells and in peripheral nerves, and to motor defects despite no alteration of the myelin sheath. When electrically stimulated, peripheral nerve axons of mutant mice failed to maintain lactate homeostasis, resulting in an impaired production of mitochondrial ATP. Action potential propagation was not changed but axonal mitochondria transport was altered, muscle axon terminals retracted and motor neurons showed cellular stress. Further reducing lactate availability through dichloroacetate treatment definitely aggravated axonal malfunction in mutant mice. Thus, cancer-like Warburg effect is essential in mSC for the long term maintenance of peripheral nerve axons physiology and function. Copy rights belong to original authors. Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Dr. Jeff Matheson, co-founder of an all-natural migraine and headache centre, which promotes a non-narcotic approach to pain and headache management. Plus, Dr. Jeff Matheson is the co-founder and medical director of Pure Life Science.   Dr. Jeff Matheson successfully practiced medicine in emergency departments across Canada and internationally, from Ontario, Newfoundland, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He later was appointed Medical Director of Med-EmergInc in 1998, a company dedicated to staffing underserved hospitals in Canada.   Dr. Matheson has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia and well as Oceania. According to Dr. Matheson, “traveling is the best education!” Dr. Matheson is an enthusiastic believer, as well as being immersed in other cultures. Similarly, if one does not listen to patients, one won’t hear what is necessary to understand the patient’s problem, i.e., the patient’s “culture.”   It is with this ability to listen and empathize with the patients that Dr. Matheson allows an accurate diagnosis and develop sustainable solutions, optimizing health, and patient outcomes. If a solution cannot be determined, resources will be dedicated, through the involvement of alternative care specialists, ascertaining the best possible treatment for the patient by trying to treat causes, not just manage symptoms.   In this episode, Dr. Matheson opens up the show discussing his introduction to the ketogenic diet and how exactly quality fats will promote health. Dr. Matheson dives deep into the relationship between the cell membrane and our DNA. Plus, he speaks about the troubles of fish oil and why we should never take the supplement. Stay tuned to hear Dr. Matheson reveal other damaging fats for our bodies and all about his Pure Form Omegas.   PureForm Plant Based Omegas: http://bit.ly/2OL0FWU . [05:45] About Dr. Matheson    Matheson realized there was no standardization for pain management in Canada. He created a standardization; now, all pain clinics need to use his system. Matheson had all sorts of pain himself. After trying a specific diet, all of the pain melted away. Then, he started prescribing the diet to his patients, who had similar results. Now, Dr. Matheson wants to introduce people to the proper fats for our bodies. Bad fats can harm you just as much as carbohydrates can.   [11:10] How Quality Fats Promote Health The structure of the cell is based on fat. The cell membrane is a fatty membrane. If you do not have a membrane, then you do not have a cell. If we are putting bad fats in our bodies, then we will have a weak cell membrane. How does the cell membrane interact with the rest of the cell? The mitochondria are also made up of fats – it is loaded with the membrane. Unhealthy cell membranes will result in lethargy.   [13:40] Relationship Between the Cell Membrane and our DNA 25% - 33% of your cell membrane is made up of omega-6. 40% of your mitochondria membrane is made up of omega-6. 100% of your cardiolipin is made up of omega-6. When you keep DNA under repair, you need proper omega-6. Our brains take 20% of our metabolic energy. If our mitochondria have bad fats in them, it can’t produce the energy that the nucleus requires to stay healthy. We are being damaged by radiation, so it requires a lot of energy to keep it repaired. If we can’t keep it repaired, we will run into mutations and possibly cancers.   [16:20] What’s the Issue with Fish Oil? Fish oil became popular when researchers found out Inuit people had low rates of heart disease. They assumed their pristine health was because of eating so much fish. However, the Inuit people didn’t eat that much fish. Their diets consisted mostly of seal, whale, and blubber. Most fish oil studies are not very well done scientifically. Fish oils are way too unstable for humans to be consuming. It is taxing our ability to keep the oil from oxidizing. A majority of the fish oil on the shelves are already oxidized – there is no way that can be healthy for you. It turns out that you only need 4.3 milligrams of DHA a day for a healthy brain. Matheson is amazed at how many punches the human body can take and still function.   [22:10] How to Get DHA Without Fish Oil Most people get enough DHA. DHA can hang around the brain for about 18 months. There isn’t a significant turnover, and we do not need tons of it. You have to have the right fats to make DHA in the first place.   [23:00] Where Does the Fish Oil End Up? The fish oil will get broken down. The body will recognize it as a toxin. Most of the fish oil is artificial, and the body cannot even recognize its chemical makeup. You can decrease the efficiency of mitochondria by introducing DHA.   [28:30] The Most Pristine Fish Oil in the World Your body can get rid of the fish oil pretty fast. If you are on fish oil for a month, do you feel any better on it? If you feel good on the fish oil, then something positive is happening. Fish oil can have a cortisol effect at first. However, it is not a long-term or healthy effect.   [36:40] Damaging Fats Plant oils that are processed and rancid olive oils. When you oxidize an oil, it starts to smell bad. So, the manufactures deodorize the oil. Now, the oil cannot take oxygen. Putting that oil in your cell membrane will result in the Warburg Effect. If you decrease the oxygen in your cells, then they will turn cancerous. 60% of us will get cancer in our lifetime. In the 1900s, it was 3%.   [43:30] About Pure Form Omegas Pure Form is all organized and cold-pressed under a blanket of nitrogen. The oil has not touched oxygen, and every capsule has a bubble in it. We used to eat things straight from the ground. Now, we don’t have a choice anymore. People will feel the difference, and they will feel it quickly.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Pure Life Science Follow Pure Life Science Facebook Twitter Pinterest Instagram YouTube Email sales@pureformomega.com Call 905-812-8333 Visit the HMC Centre Website Follow Dr. Jeff Matheson LinkedIn Facebook Listen to The Keto Kamp Podcast with Brian Peskin Buy the Pure Form Omegas Learn about Low Carb USA Watch The Truth About Fish Oil & Three Reasons to Avoid It Join the Keto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. The Warburg effect was a discovery by biophysicist Otto Warburg that cancer cells act differently and consume sugar – instead of oxygen – to survive and develop.  This astonishing should have transformed oncology, but didn’t, with sceptics claiming it was unproven.  Now the final piece in the Warburg jigsaw has been discovered – and Bryan and Lynne discuss how this could transform the way we see and treat cancer. Nobody seems to know what depression really is – but it’s certainly not a serotonin chemical imbalance, even though the theory launched the SSRI antidepressant market.  Instead, ‘talking cures’, such as CBT work just as well, as Bryan and Lynne uncover. To wrap up proceedings, they review a new opioid scandal looming, the dangerous side effect of the only prescription drug for cystitis, and how the avocado is as effective as a statin drug.

Dr. Cate Shanahan, the author of Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, pulls no punches when discussing how our conventional view of screening and treating cancer could be ill-advised. Referencing the work of Dr. Thomas Seyfried, Cate explains that cancer is actually a metabolic disease, rather than a genetic disease. This implies that instead of aggressive chemo and radiation treatment to attack cancer at the genetic level, the dietary modification could be the most effective strategy. This aligns with Warburg Effect principle, which suggests cancer cells feed preferentially on glucose, at a rate greater than regular cells. The idea is that starving cancer cells of glucose with fasting and ketogenic eating patterns makes it possible to shrink tumors and heal. Cate tackles the big C question, our biggest fear: What would you do if you were diagnosed with cancer tomorrow? Cate says she would get to business with fasting and ketogenic eating, and head off to Turkey, yes Turkey!, to participate in cutting edge insulin therapy. While it might be unsettling to rethink the template strategy of cancer-fighting, Cate's commentary can help you reflect further about how your thoughts, beliefs, and food choices affect your overall health. Enjoy this discussion with one of the great leaders of the ancestral health movement, and be sure to read Deep Nutrition to learn the hows and whys about choosing the most nutritious foods that your genes expect for optimum health.

Once the main cancer tumor has been destroyed, the cancer stem cells step back and wait. 18:27 The more we quiet inflammation and regulate blood sugar, the less likely it is that cancer stem cells will activate. 19:19 Secondary prevention includes and goes beyond diet and lifestyle. Other issues must be addressed: immune issues, chronic infections in the lymphatic system, toxin burdens, and hormonal aberrations. 24:36 Aberrant thoughts affect the immune system. 28:03 Cancer stem cells stay with the blueprint and the rest are the soldier cancer cells that we see. The stem cells, are generally not affected by the treatment that destroys the soldiers. 29:53 Cancer stem cells have the ability to recruit and program normal cells. The harder we hit the cancer soldier stem cells with chemo radiation, the more the stem cells back away from the area and wait. 31:06 The strategy is to keep cancer stem cells happy and quiet. 33:44 A very low carb or keto diet was a common link in cancer patients that did the best with their therapies, longer remissions or no recurrence. 37:13 Research has found that integrative cancer therapies extended lifespan, compared to only standard therapy. 41:29 Work with at least two practitioners to get many options and varied care. 49:07 By the time we can see a cancer tumor with imaging, it has been growing slowly for 5 to 10 years or longer. 51:00 Prescreening tests are getting better. Next generation testing, which still has some gaps, looks for things like circulating cancer cells. 52:06 Some traditional testing of non-specific inflammatory markers show metabolic shifts to an inflammatory milieu or a milieu that shows Warburg Effect. 58:38 Thermography, when done correctly, can detect and track cancer. 01:03:28 Dr. Anderson tests all cancer survivors for chronic infection, including the family of HHV, mycoplasma, c pneumoniae and more. 01:05:21 People who eat mushrooms regularly have lower rates of certain cancers. Some cancers that do not respond to anything else, will respond to mushrooms. 01:10:45 High protein intake and low quality protein sources can bring you out of cancer fighting mode and out of ketosis. Poor quality protein, and food in general, can bring toxins into your body. 01:14:18 The ideal morning routine for preventing cancer starts with a quiet mind and centering. Exercise in the morning for the brain and body. Hydrate. 01:18:27 Dr. Anderson would choose curcumin as his desert island supplement. Curcumin levels out cytokines and triggering molecules. 01:22:33 Dr. Anderson’s elevator pitch: keep people from developing cancer to is to get them to do the things that bring their metabolism back to its intended balance.

Dr. Cate Shanahan, author of Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, pulls no punches when discussing how our conventional view of screening and treating cancer could be ill-advised. Unsurprisingly, the “conventional” ways of viewing many things in our world do not hold up anymore - and this, of course, includes the food system, the hospital system, and most importantly, how we perceive health-care and the concept of sickness in this country. Could it be that we have actually gotten some crucial things wrong when it comes to how we view the screening and treatment process for cancer? If anyone would know, it’s Dr. Cate, as she has always been ahead of the game. Early on in her career, she had an epiphany that would change the course of her life: “My goal of making people healthy was not in alignment with the hospital’s goal, which was taking money out of sick people.” We once lived in a world where patients spent 90% of their doctor’s appointment simply talking to their doctor, but now, 90% of your appointment time is spent doing expensive tests! Still, Dr. Cate admits that when she first began her journey as a doctor, she naively believed that there had to be one hospital out there with a different way of doing things. Unfortunately, as we all know now, that’s just not the case. Thankfully, we have radical thinkers and pioneers in the medical field like Dr. Cate, who dedicate their lives to truly helping people heal. Referencing the work of Dr. Thomas Seyfried, Dr. Cate explains that cancer is actually a metabolic disease, rather than a genetic disease. This implies that instead of aggressive chemo and radiation treatment to attack cancer at the genetic level, dietary modification could be the most effective strategy. This aligns with the Warburg Effect principle, which suggests cancer cells feed preferentially on glucose, at a rate greater than regular cells. The idea is that starving cancer cells of glucose with fasting and ketogenic eating patterns makes it possible to shrink tumors and heal. To put it simply, metabolic diseases are most effectively treated through metabolic treatments. While it might be unsettling to rethink the template strategy of cancer fighting, Dr. Cate's commentary can help you reflect further about how your thoughts, beliefs, and food choices affect your overall health. Unfortunately, there are so many things that most people do in daily life, from certain lifestyle habits to not being aware that their salad dressing contains vegetable oil, that actually promotes cancer. There are so many hidden dangers lurking in this world, but luckily, Dr. Cate knows exactly what you need to do to protect yourself from them, so enjoy this discussion with one of the great leaders of the ancestral health movement, and be sure to read Deep Nutrition ( https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Nutrition-Your-Genes-Traditional/dp/1250113849/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2P1GKRK74W0S1&keywords=deep+nutrition+by+catherine+shanahan&qid=1574651628&sprefix=deep+nutrit%2Caps%2C274&sr=8-1 ) to learn the hows and whys about choosing the most nutritious foods that your genes expect for optimum health. *TIMESTAMPS:* How hospitals extract money from people [5:30].
