How do you begin to talk about SUBURBICON, the 2017 film George Clooney made by hacking together an unmade Coen brothers crime script with one of his own about a true story of racial violence in the suburbs? By hacking together two incredible podcasts tangentially related to the subject, that's how! We got together with our good friends Jordan Fish and Ray Tintori from the To The White Sea podcast for some in-depth script analysis, live scene work, and a thorough postmortem of the Clooney film to figure out what even happened here. It's gotta be the most anyone has talked about this movie in 9 years, and it was a lot of fun - we hope you enjoy! (This episode will be on the To The White Sea feed in a couple weeks, but it's a Paid Costly For Me exclusive for now!) Most movies weren't directed by Steven Soderbergh, but few were as notably not directed by Steven Soderbergh as this one: MONEYBALL, the true story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics' revolutionary sabermetrics-based hiring strategy, was 5 days from shooting when Sony pulled the plug on Soderbergh's version. After a rewrite by Aaron Sorkin and a few cast change-ups, a slicker, Fincher-lite version directed by Bennett Miller made it to theaters, and we're talking about the whole deal. This ep has it all, quite frankly: in-depth script revision analysis, baseball talk, sports politics, and a long conversation about how statistics and "disruption" inform the world. It turns out everything is Moneyball, maybe? Give this one a listen, folks. As always, thanks to Jetski for our theme music and to Jeremy Allison for our artwork.

In part two (of two) Tom Servais discusses the role that good luck played in his greatest images, the worthy risk of shooting from the left at Jaws, which person he'll never ride a Jetski with again, why he's chasing wind now more than waves, which surfer inspires his photography and lifestyle most, and why relationships are central to creating his most meaningful photos. Enjoy!
Three weeks into “Married At First Sight,” the couples really start to settle into their marriages. Some of them take the plunge into sexual intimacy, while others are still tinkering with basic communication. Nikki and Shawn practice using “I” statements and relinquishing power. Caitlin finally dims Devin's light to an acceptable soft glow, while he lovingly compares her to a frozen lake. Courteney's hatred for Nick deepens by the hours, as is his determination to pretend it's fine. Marissa has effortlessly melted her life into Adam's jetskiing, peacocking, thrift-shopping vibe, and they have no plans other than to just keep vibing it out, full send. After some couples counseling and a group dinner, spied on by Paul and Dr. Lisa, the experts arrive to the first group therapy session ready to call everyone out – especially Adam and Mecca. But given some of these bizarre pairings, they may need to be called out just as much as any of the newlyweds.

For the first time ever, we're covering “Married at First Sight”! The franchise's 20th season, set in Seattle, kicked off last week with three episodes. The first batch of episodes introduced us to seven couples – including one semi-professional reality star (hey there, Nick from “The Circle”), a man who only travels via jet ski, and a woman who claims not to remember January 6th – as well as a handful of problematic dads. It's an overabundance of couples, and most of them seem doomed from jump. Leigh and Claire discuss the threads of conservatism in this cast, how many of the men are bursting with ego or can't stop pushing their new wives' sexual boundaries, and how hopeful we are that each couple will find a love story together. (Spoiler: Not very!)

Millennium Edition is an original podcast from the Sound Stone Podcast Network, covering the GameCube, Dreamcast, and other games from the late 90s and 2000s. Join writer, teacher, and podcaster Sean Douglass, along with co-producers Gooey Fame and Darren Hupke, as they explore topics in video games from this turn-of-the-millennium period. The new millennium was a unique time for video games. Graphical leaps led to new levels of resolution and fidelity, with games that showed off advanced water and lighting effects and detailed character models. Innovations like wireless WaveBird controllers and console internet connectivity changed the way people played, and with gaming in the third dimension no longer in its infancy, developers found ways to offer more polished and refined 3D experiences. Despite their age, the games of this era have aged particularly well and remain in high demand. The timelessness of these games, and this hopeful, playful technological landscape of the late 90s and early 2000s, is what this show is all about. If you're a Nintendo or SEGA fan still enjoying the GameCube or Dreamcast today, or if you're someone just discovering games of this period for the first time, we hope Millennium Edition will be a fun and nuanced look back at a time that today feels both comfortingly nostalgic and surprisingly modern all at once. - As temperatures rise, we're heading to the beach with the 2001 GameCube launch title Wave Race: Blue Storm. The third entry in the Wave Race series, there are perhaps few games that show off this console generation's famous water effects quite like Blue Storm, a Jet Ski racing game that is still a fun (and challenging!) ride today. For this episode, we have some familiar Sound Stone faces as Sean talks with Gooey and McKenna of Flashback 64, the chronological Nintendo 64 podcast. Together they discuss the history of Blue Storm, their experiences with the game, and how well it carried the torch for Wave Race into a new era of video games. Questions or comments about this show? A comedy script about the early days of pro football followed Steven Soderbergh like a shadow for over a decade until George Clooney finally directed it himself, hot off the critical success of GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. It was also an important early major film role for TV star and CIA asset John Krasinski. But was it worth the wait? And what's the deal with football and screwball comedies, like, politically or whatever? We take these questions and more straight into the dang end zone! It's commentary time once again, folks, and we thought we'd revisit the first time we talked about Louisiana and sex work on the show: the Clint Eastwood film TIGHTROPE! Originally written for Clint Eastwood by friend of the show Elmore Leonard, Richard Fleischer's 1974 Charles Bronson vehicle MR. MAJESTYK is that classic action film setup: a melon farmer accidentally ends up in the middle of a mob hitman's prison transport escape and teams up with a beautiful migrant labor organizer to save his crop. George Clooney's second feature - written with his producing partner Grant Heslov - was 2005's GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, a dramatization of newsman Edward R. Murrow's brave stance against Senator Joe McCarthy's anticommunist witch hunt. Well, just against the witch hunt part. And we're not sure it was all that brave - listen and find out. And of course we roped in our buddy Ryan Torgeson, formerly of the Altmania podcast, who has maybe more context for this film than anyone we know. We talk about whether the film has a coherent politics and what that might be, the film's depiction of Black women, the "discourse" that most pissed us off, being the child of radical parents, and of course how many beers we've had (and their relative size). We're back with another commentary track, this time for a movie by a director we almost covered: David Cronenberg. His 1988 identical twin gynecologist horror-tragedy DEAD RINGERS deals with all kinds of themes we love: the nature of the self, of experience, of the body, of morality. It's also got the guy from Soderbergh's KAFKA and the lady from TIGHTROPE and OBSESSION. Listen to this along with the film or just listen on its own - it works either way, in our opinion! Chaz and AJ spoke with Hunter Hicks this morning, who recently achieved viral fame for successfully catching a 200-pound bluefin tuna from his jet ski. Hunter was almost 10 miles off-shore, reeling in the massive fish for over 2 hours. Photo courtesy: Hunter Hicks

Making good on a tweeted threat, we had our friend, filmmaker Christopher Jason Bell join us to try to make sense of 2017's THE BOSS BABY, an animated film for children that baffled us all. We end up talking about what it means to compare films, whether there is a use to analyzing any text at all, and if one can be a boss without any productive process over which to boss. Plus, we sing the praises of the brilliant 2022 Boss Baby Symposium, which you should all check out. Also: a message from Maxwell! Attention all Thieves, Gray Mages, Unbidden Warriors, Dark Avians, Riverwynders and Sappers: it's MICHAEL CLAYTON time. Tony Gilroy's 2007 corporate thriller vehicle about fixers, cover-ups, mental breakdowns, and baguettes was produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney's production company Section Eight, and has become a bonafide New Dad Classic. Joining us to talk all things Gilroy are Rusteen Honardoost and Alex Wolinetz of the wonderful Andorks podcast - and you're never gonna believe this, but we found some connections to ANDOR here. Plus we learn about the paper Ian wrote on this movie in high school. Really great conversation, check it out!
