The Momentum Series replays our top episodes so that you have the chance to catch episodes you missed, and refresh on others. The idea is to support you more regularly as you take charge of 2023 (through whatever challenges may arise). Here's to health, wealth and wisdom on this heartfelt path of yours. On this episode I interview Dr. John Arden, a brilliant author and leader in the field of integrative psychotherapy. This episode is particularly special for me, as I have been following Dr. Arden's work for many years, since I first read Rewire Your Brain Think Your Way to a Better Life. As you will see in the episode, Dr. Arden is able to take complex concepts from psychotherapy, neuropsychology, epigenetics, psychoneuroimmunology, and nutritional neuroscience and present them in an easily accessible manner. This means that you will have the knowledge to implement these evidence-based practices to cultivate more calmness and connection in your life. What is covered in this episode: >> The SEEDS approach to good health: Social, Exercise, Education, Diet, and Sleep >> Social: Early experiences, such as your attachment, can impact brain development and your epigenome, and how later life experiences, including therapy can also have an epigenetic effect. >> Exercise: This is the “most powerful” of all the components. Dr. Arden describes how he has implemented a cardiovascular boost “minimal dose” by structuring his environment, and how exercise supports you to get energy (even if you're tired!) and is the best antidepressant and anxiolytic! (That means, it decreases symptoms of depression and anxiety.) >> Education: Why learning new things is important for brain health and how it supports your adaptivity (i.e., mental flexibility). >> Diet: How what you eat affects your neurochemistry, and what the best diets are to support your mental health and gut bacteria. Dr. Arden also shares that there is more DNA in your gut that is not you, than is in your cells! He also shares concerns around the most consumed vegetable in the USA. >> Sleep: What makes for quality sleep, and how this impacts different components of your health. >> The FEED approach to learning: Focus, Effort, Effortlessness (stay on behaviour long enough to make it effortless), and Determination Links Discussed Dr. John Arden's webpage and books Head to www.drkaitin.com/ww2 for show notes, free resources and courses that support you a heartfelt life alongside peak performance.  "So much gratitude for Wisdom for Wellbeing." This week's episode is with artist, actor, peace activist, playwright and pirate radio queen, Margaretta D'Arcy. Margaretta has campaigned for decades on issues related to global peace and civil liberties. In 2014, Margaretta, then aged 80, served two prison sentences resulting from her opposition to the use of Shannon Airport by the US military.  Over the years, her activism has taken many forms. She was a member of Bertrand Russell's Committee of 100 group. She participated in anti-nuclear demonstrations at Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, and took part in the H-Block women's protests in Armagh. Broadcasting from her kitchen in Galway, she operated a long-running women's pirate radio station, which served to give a platform to lesser-heard and marginalised voices in the community. She wrote and devised a large body of 'Loose' theatre, often working in collaboration with her late-partner, the radical playwright John Arden. Together, they created the much-celebrated The Non-Stop Connolly Show, the story of James Connolly told in six parts over 24 hours. In this episode of the podcast, Margaretta talks to us about how she was arrested during a peaceful demonstration in Belfast on International Women's Day 1979, which lead to her taking part in the no-wash protests in Armagh Gaol. She describes the brutality and humiliation of invasive strip searches by male prison guards on women prisoners, and asks questions of whether women are given their proper dues when it comes to acknowledging the place of profound feminist resistance within our complex history of revolutionary struggle.  We look at artistic censorship, political complacency, our complicity in war, and our inability to empathise with strangers in other lands. Is imagination enough to fight back against neoliberal Ireland? And just how is Margaretta D'Arcy still finding ways to resist during these lockdown times?

Speech Language Pathologist Lauren Schwabish reached out to me on Instagram with a few questions. I answer them in this episode. If you  have questions you’d like me to address, you can email Bill@Strokecast.com or message me on Instagram where I am Bills_Strokecast. Do you have tips on what education was most effective for you, or your survivor community? One of the first places I went was to podcasts. I found the Enable Me show from Australia and the aphasia-centric Slow Road to Better first, but not much else. It’s why I eventually started the Strokecast. I wanted it to be the podcast I wished I had found when I was in the hospital. Now, of course There are a lot more. If you want to hear more stroke related podcasts, visit http://Strokecast.com/StrokeRelatedPodcasts I also learned a lot from books. The first two survivor books I read were My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and Healing into Possibility by Alison Shapiro. I’ve also learned a lot reading memoirs from Strokecast Guests Christine Lee, Ted Baxter, Marcia Moran, Julia Fox Garrison, Janet Douglas, and Debra Myerson. You can hear my interviews with them and the stroke adjacent authors I’ve interviewed here. I also learned a lot diving into books about neuroplasticity and anatomy reading The Brain’s Way of Healing by Norman Doidge, Rewire Your Brain by John Arden, and Anatomy and Physiology Made Easy by Phillip Vaughan. If you use a Kindle or other eReader, be sure to check with you local library’s website because you may be able to check out eBooks without ever leaving the house. And, of course, doctors and therapists are a great resource. Ask them lots of questions to learn more. Most of them love talking about this stuff. What educational opportunities helped you the most as you left the hospital? What didn’t? Creating my own content was quite helpful. I began posting detailed descriptions of stroke stuff to Facebook. One of the best ways to learn something is to teach it. It reinforces the details, and it also helped me realize when I didn’t understand something and needed to ask more questions. Plus it engages other parts of the brain. It’s one thing to take in information, but then to teach it you have to route that information to the motor functions of the brain so you can type and the language center so you can choose the words. Support groups in the pre-quarantine days were also a fantastic place for more information. Plus you’re among people who get it. At a support group, folks understand what you’re going through. While staying inside, you can also join several of the dozens of stroke related Facebook groups. Be sure to search for them. These groups may have a few members or thousands of members. The leadership and members will have a huge impact on the character of the group, so try a few to find the ones that best mesh with your personality. Finally, check out #Stroke and #StrokeSurvivor on Twitter and Instagram. I’ve found that Twitter is likely home to more professionals whereas Instagram is more about the journeys of individual survivors. I’m preparing a lecture on how to best advocate for yourself when communicating with health care providers. Any hot takes? First of all, you have to advocate for yourself. Ultimately you are responsible for your own recovery and getting the support and care that you need. When you go into the doctor’s office, remember they are getting paid to provide the care. This is a business meeting. Like any business meeting, that means you need to prepare in advance, take notes during, and follow up on your activities afterwards. Prepare ahead by assembling key information like: Blood pressure readings Symptoms List of medications Questions you want answers to. You can even provide this information ahead of time to help them prepare. During your appointment, feel free to take notes. You can also bring a partner with you to help retain information. You can even ask if you can record the appointment. They might say no,  but you can still ask. You also need to recognize that the medical field is highly silo’d. By that I mean they are experts in their narrow field, but they may not be as familiar with other fields. That means you may be relaying information from one provider to another. You may be teaching your primary care physician about stroke or carrying information from a neuropathologist to a ph6ysiatrist. Finally, if you’re not comfortable with a specific provider, get a different one. Hack of the Week Patricia Geist-Martin (from Falling in Love with the Process Part 2) shared another technique that Bill Torres (from Falling in Love in the Process Part 1) used to deal with spasticity in his hand. He piled books on top of his hand while watching TV. Straightening out his finger and then putting weight on top was one reason his hand is no longer locked in a fist. Glossophobia is the cool and scientific name for the fear of public speaking. It is believed to affect up to 75% of the population, making it one of the most common phobias in the world. But what if we told you that this disorder may not, well, exist? What if we told you that you could speak in front of thousands of people with absolute confidence and not a drop of sweat? On this special episode of Figures of Speech, Tim and Tammy investigate their theory that for most of us, the fear of public speaking is not a true phobia—it is a learned behavior imposed by society, our upbringings, and false perceptions around speaking in public. This episode features interviews with two special guests: Dr. Theo Tsaousides Dr. Theo Tsaousides is a neuropsychologist who has served as a clinician, researcher, educator, supervisor, and trainer. He provides services to individuals, groups, and organizations locally and internationally. As a “brain-training expert,” he has extensive clinical and research experience in cognitive rehabilitation, a set of interventions that aim to improve a person’s ability to perform cognitive tasks, so that they can increase their productivity and quality of life. More specifically, the strategies he teaches target the executive functions of the brain, a set of mental skills involved in goal achievement. Through intensive training and practice, he helps his clients use their brains more efficiently for the pursuit of their own goals. Learn more about Dr. Theo Tsaousides on his website and check out his latest book, Brainblocks: Overcoming the 7 Hidden Barriers to Success. Dr. John Arden Dr. Arden's work incorporates what is currently known about the brain and its capacities, including neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, with psychoneuroimmunology, epigenetics, psychotherapy research, mindfulness, nutritional neuroscience and social intelligence. His is the author of 15 books (translated into 20 languages), and has conducted seminars in all US States and 29 countries. Generally speaking, his work focuses on how we conceptualize mental health problems and their solutions. The book explores recent research in neuroscience and psychology that shows the mind is not one thing, but is composed of ongoing interactions between mental operating networks. For example, chronic inflammation and autoimmune disorders are strongly associated with depression and anxiety. Dysregulations of immune system, diet, and even gut bacteria profoundly affect mental health. Since mental health and physical health can no longer be compartmentalized as areas addressed by specialists, psychotherapists need to understand the mind-brain-body feedback loops.   You can find out more about the new book Mind-Brain-Gene from Dr. John Arden's website John's new book is available at Amazon... In this podcast I detail another technique for accessing the subconscious and mining the wealth of memories  and emotions that reside there.   Breathing.  Yes, breathing.  Featuring New York based voice, breath and Alexander Technique coach Jean McClelland and psychologist and author Dr. John Arden this episode details the art and science of using the breath to reduce anxiety, access the subconscious and increase creativity.  The breath and its relationship to the subconscious is the foundation of meditation, a tool of psychotherapy, and an integral part of the performing arts. The subconscious is an important part any artistic and psychological practice because the conscious brain can only hold 6 or 7 pieces of information at one time whereas your subconscious brain holds a lifetime of memories, emotions and behaviors.   Accessing the subconscious increases self-knowledge and gives one more options for solving any given challenge.

Are you a perfectionist in some area of your life?  Your parenting, your relationships, your art, where no matter how hard you try, no matter how much progress you make, it doesn't feel enough?Welcome to “The Art of Enough”, a podcast and art series that can help you understand the causes of feeling not enough and provide some guidance on how psychology, neuroscience and creative process can help you transcend this and other problematic emotions. In this episode we hear how my compulsive drive to be more, to be better (what I call being a compulsive mountain climber or overachiever) started in childhood, primarily when my father had a series of bipolar episodes and had to leave the house.  Therapist Bob Szita explains how it is almost universal that a child blames themselves when a parent leaves the home.  Meditator and playwright Jean Claude Itallie explains how these types of controlling "demons" are instilled in childhood and live in our subconscious as adults.   Psychologist and Author Dr. John Arden details the neuroscience behind being addicted to any behavior --- which includes always climbing the highest mountains --- and how my father's bipolar disease most likely affected my art aesthetic.  Finally I describe a creative process of looking for daily "Small Surprises" as a way of curbing my need to always do more and enhance my ability to live life at a slower and more satisfying pace.

Guest Introduction: Dr. John Arden is a psychologist with over 40 years of experience providing psychological services and directing mental health programs. His study of neuropsychology has inspired him to integrate neuroscience and psychotherapy, synthesizing the biological and psychological into a new vision for psychotherapy, known as Brain-Based Therapy. John is the author of 15 books, including “Rewire Your Brain,” “The Brain Bible,” and his latest publication “Mind-Brain-Gene,” which will be released on January 15th, 2019. Interview Summary: In this interview, John starts by discussing his focus on integrating various psychological perspectives and finding common denominators. He describes the main schools of psychology and gives examples of similar therapy approaches that use different language. John goes on to talk about secure and insecure attachment styles in both children and adults. He then gives some examples of how insecure attachment affects our brains and our behavior. Next, John debunks some pop psych myths and clarifies the difference between motor functions and how the cortex responds to and interprets our environment. He explains how anxiety and depression lead to avoidance, which makes those problems even worse. He then talks about temperament, and how we're all born with different emotional patterns. John also describes how we can rewire our brains and adopt new behaviors through nurturing. He provides examples of how to nurture self-care by challenging ourselves and expanding our comfort zones. Chris gives an example of working through issues with a client. John explains how exposure helps us overcome anxiety and induces neuroplasticity in the brain. He gives additional examples of how humans are exceptionally adaptive. Chris and John then share their insights on what might be driving the current political and social regression. John also explains how stress and fear make us more reactive and inhibit our ability to process complex ideas, and Chris offers some examples of this from his own life. John then discusses the five main factors of brain health: social connection, exercise, education, diet, and sleep. He describes how each of these factors affect our physical and psychological health, and offers strategies for optimizing them. Finally, John talks about how traumas are imprinted in our memory. He shares advice on how to depreciate these patterns and balance our stress response so that we can connect more deeply with ourselves and others. He also explains the concept of epigenetics and how lifestyle influences gene expression.
