In this podcast, I discuss how trust is something that is built or broken over time. Trust can grow stronger or be lost depending on actions and experiences. It's essential to establish trust within a support system, and this can be achieved through small challenges that help strengthen it. A robust support system is vital in life, providing a foundation of reliability and confidence that you can rely on in both good times and bad. Expanding on this, building trust often requires consistent, honest communication and a willingness to be vulnerable. It involves demonstrating reliability, keeping promises, and being transparent in your actions and intentions. In the context of a support system, trust ensures that members can lean on each other, share openly, and collaborate effectively. It creates an environment where people feel valued and understood, which is crucial for emotional well-being. By nurturing trust, we not only strengthen our relationships but also create a network of support that can help us navigate the complexities of life with greater ease and confidence.

As managers we will normally have a peer network within our company. But occasionally we might experience problems that our in-house peer network can't help us with. For example, when the issue is with those same colleagues or our organisation itself. At times like this an external professional network can be invaluable. In this conversation Pilar and Tim primarily talk about networks which can provide different forms of support such as showing a different perspective, learning from someone with more or different experience, getting greater clarity in your own thoughts through talking them out, or even just solidarity from someone who's suffered in a similar way. No surprise that our hosts, who have never met in person, have both had success in building relationships and networks online. Over coffee they share some of the techniques that have worked for them to expand and sustain their professional networks. 00:30 mins Pilar calls back to our conversation about men's mental health at work to highlight that building a network outside your organisation can be a valuable strategy when you're struggling to be yourself at work. 1:25 Tim shares how external support network helped him when he was struggling and feeling isolated. These mutually beneficial relationships are much more positive and rewarding than his first conceptions of business networks - like "old boys networks" as a back channel for getting a job. 3:00 Pilar used to do a lot of networking to get work, but she approached it as reaching out to people she enjoyed talking to. She has found this led to relationships that were long-lasting and much more fun. 4:30 Things changed for Tim when he realised that he enjoyed being helpful. This brought him into contact with a lot more people, some of whom became a network. 5:30 Networking will mean different things to us at different points in our career and our lives. The key for Pilar and one of her strengths is how to sustain those relationships. 7:00 She shares some of the ways she has built networks and communities like the Virtual Team Talk Slack Group and a new writing community she is building. 9:00 Tim has been lucky in joining existing communities where his "being helpful" approach helped him integrate. He prefers this to transactional networking, where you are aiming for a particular outcome. 11:10 It is so helpful for managers to be able to talk freely with other people who have had similar experiences. Getting different perspectives and insights or even just solidarity is an enormous advantage when you are stuck, or caught up in your own thoughts and emotions. Tim references the Rands Leadership Slack community created by Michael Lopp as a place he's been able to get help outside of his workplace. 13:00 You don't want to wait until you're going through a really tricky situation before you start trying to find support. Building a good network takes time! 14:00 Companies could assign some of their learning and development budgets to encourage people to build their networks and learn outside their organisation. 14:45 As a shy person, Pilar has had success asking people to introduce her to others. Even her mum has made some great introductions for her! 15:45 Tim has found reaching out to people digitally has been really helpful. Especially so he had some familiar faces at a conference or event. 17:45 Donut calls can be an easy way to build connections within Slack communities. Tim meets several new people each month this way. 19:30 KLM, the Dutch airline, once piloted a program called Meet & Seat which let passengers choose people they wanted to connect with on a flight. 20:15 At various times in Tim and Pilar's friendship she's brought groups together. For example during Covid there were small "Coffee around the corner" groups Pilar created for Zoom calls which she and Tim both enjoyed. 21:00 Tim encourages listeners to have an open mind about what value they might get from meeting new people in a professional context and building relationships with them. What about you dear listener? Do you go out to meet new people, and nurture those you've already met? Get in touch through our Contact Form https://managementcafepodcast.com/contact/

As retirement age gets pushed back later and later, and life expectancy continues to expand, women 40 and older are looking to make the most of the next season of their lives by resuming or beginning new vocations and fulfilling deferred dreams.Nada Jones, the Founder of Liberty Road, saw the need to support and create community for women in this demographic. In this episode, Lindsay and Nada discuss the importance of staying relevant and acquiring new skills in a rapidly changing landscape, and how Liberty Road aims to provide technical training and resources to help women in midlife remain competitive. This conversation provides valuable insights into the journey of entrepreneurship and the specific needs of women in midlife. It highlights the importance of finding purpose and meaning in this stage of life, and offers practical advice and inspiration for women looking to start or grow their own businesses.Key Takeaways:Building a platform or business doesn't always require a detailed business plan. Sometimes, it can evolve organically based on the needs and interests of the community.Patience is key when building a platform or business. It takes time to see results and to pivot when necessary. It's important to listen to the community and adapt accordingly. By understanding their needs and desires, you can create a platform that truly serves them.Creating a sense of community is crucial, both online and offline. Providing opportunities for connection, support, and collaboration can greatly enhance the experience for members.Quotes:“I think women over 40, we're kind of the most boring diversity issue right now. No one really wants to tackle age, and no one wants to tackle women in menopause. It's not sexy.” (16:47 | Nada) “I might need to work until I'm 70. Retirement age is changing; we're living longer. That means we have to have more money to last us longer in retirement. So we have to start to tackle these things for working women and non-working women in this midlife stage.” (20:24 | Nada) “If we can teach women in this demographic in this stage of life, if we can give them the tools they need to go out and do the things they're each respectively called to do, half the world's problems will be taken care of. This isn't a time to be stepping back, it's a time to be stepping up.” (24:08 | Nada) “It may have looked like I was living the dream, but just be really clear about what that dream looks like.” (43:12 | Nada)“Just start. By the time you iterate for all the changes that you will need to make, because it's usually not exactly what you, when you started, it usually doesn't end up being exactly what it was in the beginning, right? You need to make room for all those iterations. You will have moved the needle so much just by starting. You will surprise yourself.” (47:57 | Nada)Connect with Nada Jones:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisislibertyroad/If you like what you're hearing, please leave a rating or review at https://ratethispodcast.com/dearfoundher You can now work with Lindsay 1:1 to build and monetize your community through the same method she used to grow and scale her business. Our paper florist friend from New Zealand, Wendy Anderson, chats with us about building her business with a support network both in person and online. How do you build a paper flower business all by yourself? The answer is, you don't. Even if you're the only paper florist in your entire country, you need a support network to help you grow as an artist and a business owner. That's the entire purpose behind our work with Paper Talk: to share, connect, and grow our paper flower industry no matter where you may be. Wendy Anderson of Just Imagine knows all about forging a paper flower business without a robust local industry to support her, as she lives in New Zealand without any other known paper florists in sight. But she still doesn't go it alone! In our latest episode of Paper Talk we chatted about how she has built up her virtual, familial, and friend network to support her paper flower journey. Finding an Online Community We first met Wendy through our Facebook group, which brings together paper florists from all over the world. As mentioned, Wendy is currently unaware of any other paper florists in her area, so being able to ask questions and share techniques with other like-minded artists is incredibly important for her. She was nervous the first time she joined our monthly Makers Meeting, but waking up incredibly early to connect with other paper florists has become a huge priority for her. “I've only missed three meetings in four years,” she told us. “Our paper flower community and those Makers Meetings [are] my most favorite online place to be, and it's got to be something big for me to miss it.” You can also join our meetings or post your questions in our group. We've built countless businesses and friendships there. In the episode, Wendy dove into more ways our online community has helped her. Now more than ever with so many of us stuck at home, take advantage of the amazing technology we have and find your virtual support group. Building a Varied Support Network Wendy is very open about how much her success depends on her incredible family and friends. Even though they aren't paper florists themselves, they've helped problem solve, set up events, and even answered questions about her work. One particularly touching story she shared on the episode was about her father, who is in his 80s, helping design the mechanics for an archway that spanned over a set of double doors. Then he did it again when she asked for help scaling it down for an art exhibition. Wendy shared even more stories about loved ones like her amazing husband stepping in to help, and we fully agree with her assessment of how crucial that kind of assistance is. Getting outside perspectives to help us solve problems is so crucial. Sometimes you need to step back and get another opinion. Those people don't have to be in our industry in order to help! “When we do our craft…the second [flower] is always better. The third, the fourth—as you get on, you get better and better at it. It's practice and practice.” - Wendy Promoting Our Industry Wendy loves talking about our industry and her work. “I have such a passion for paper flower making, it's hard to shut me up.” We know the feeling! If you're not used to talking about your work, though, it may feel awkward. But it's so important for us to educate the general population about paper flowers. One way Wendy has done this is through speaking engagements. Since quality crepe paper is difficult to find in New Zealand, she brings along the imported paper to let the audience touch and stretch. She spoke about how she runs these events and other ways she promotes paper flowers in our episode. Here's what you'll hear when you listen to our conversation: Where Wendy finds recommendations for imported supplies. How she sets up her exhibition table and speaking engagements. Why surrounding yourself with supportive people is so crucial for success. How to build paper flower awareness in your community. Why being part of our online community can help you build your business, just like it's helped Wendy. Start building your support network right now by joining our Facebook group, and listen now to the podcast to hear all about Wendy's paper flower journey and how she's built up her paper florist business.

‘If you are someone who wants to do the best they can and understands that there are other people who know things that you don’t then this is the place to go, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people’ Desmond explains why attending the upcoming annual IRPM Seminar is important for everyone in the industry. He explains the reason he attends every year and the value of connecting face to face. KEY TAKEAWAYS The IRPM seminar is an important annual event and it’s a pivotal moment if you are in the block management sector or property management as its one of the few events where a significant number of people attend. Don’t see it as a waste of time, it’s the perfect storm there is not another occasion where you can speak with like-minded people who are experiencing the same challenges and overcoming the same problems. In talking to people, you will find people you want to stay connected with. If you share an answer with someone it is a very powerful foundation for a future relationship. It becomes powerful if you are also a resource for others, you can't just take, you have to be willing to be a resource yourself. if you come from a place of service its then easy to pick up the phone and ask someone else for help. The rawness of having the conversation provides the opportunity to help. Sometimes you fashion your own opportunities to help during a conversation. I got to put a face to a name, I got to have a conversation and there is nowhere else that could happen. I have people who are willing to help me because I am open and willing to help them. You’ve got to build a network you can lean on but it’s important you become a resource first, you can’t just start taking from people you have to give first. BEST MOMENTS ‘If you work in an industry then you are supportive of the industry’ ‘Not everyone is going to be a BFF’ ‘Every conversation is an opportunity to potentially help someone else’ ‘Imagine how we would be able to thrive if we helped each other rather than competing’ VALUABLE RESOURCES More With Moreira Podcast ABOUT THE HOST I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while. I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school. But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life. Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system! Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite? This season we are busting myths, and in this episode, we discuss the myth that mentoring is a one-way street. We talk with our guest Beronda Montgomery, Ph.D., about a cyanobacterium that changes shape in response to stress, and how mentors and trainees also need to change in response to their mutual needs during a research project. Beronda Montgomery is a Michigan State University (MSU) Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology - Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. She is also the Assistant Provost for Faculty Development at MSU. Beronda completed her Ph.D. at the University of California Davis and was a National Science Foundation-funded postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University. Dr. Montgomery also conducts scholarship and training initiatives on mentoring issues related to diversity, junior scientists, and faculty development. She has received many awards, including recently being elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Beronda's laboratory is broadly interested in how photosynthetic organisms, and specifically cyanobacteria, respond to light and nutrient availability. In this episode, we discuss one of her lab's recent publications on the regulation of carboxysome structural proteins and the mentor/mentee dynamics that helped shape the direction of this research. We also talk about Beronda's inspiring mentoring model and the similarities between plants and people (as well as the differences). As tempting as it is for us introverts to think that having an online-only business means we can hunker down and keep to ourselves, the truth is that we all need outside perspectives. In this episode of The Introvert's Edge, Beth Buelow of The Introvert Entrepreneur explains why it's crucial that we get out there and connect with other people, whether through networking, attending presentations, or meeting for lunch. It's not just about building a network; it's about creating inspiration. Yes, Introverted Entrepreneurs Need the Outside World It's natural for introverts to prefer working on their own rather than being drawn to outside people and groups. But as Beth explains, when we isolate too much, we get stuck in our heads and our ideas can dry up. External stimulation, even something as simple as attending a webinar or going to a movie, has the effect of pulling us out of our heads, allowing us to generate fresh ideas. If the idea of socializing causes you a pang of introverted anxiety, take heart – Beth suggests that these activities can be entirely on your own terms. Choose ways to connect with others that you're comfortable with, that will replenish your coffers, and that will keep your brain stimulated. You don't have to mingle with every person in the room; the important thing is to participate in activities that give you new ideas and insights on your business. Of course, this doesn't mean that the people you speak to are going to hand you the answers. It's simply the process of being open to new ideas, hearing new perspectives, and talking through your thoughts – this is what can turn on that light bulb and reveal the way forward. If you've chosen a safe space to connect, and you feel a level of control, you may be amazed at what insights you can discover. “We may be introverts, but we still need outside people and perspectives.” - @introvertcoach - Author of The Introvert EntrepreneurClick To Tweet Finding a Supportive Network for Introverted Business Owners You may cringe at the idea of attending a networking event or a mastermind, but the right group for you is out there. For example, Beth describes the mastermind group that she's a part of, which is highly structured, well-facilitated, and provides opportunities for people to speak safely and comfortably. This results in a nurturing, empowering environment that works for her as an introvert. What does this mean for you? Beth advises that you not give up in your search for a helpful, supportive group. If one group doesn't work, no problem; try something else. There is absolutely no need to try to force a fit. If you aren't comfortable, don't make it about you. It's simply about finding a network in which you feel supported and heard – and that group does exist. Keep putting yourself out there, and you'll find it. First, notice who you're currently surrounding yourself with. Are you primarily spending your time with family and friends in traditional employment, who don't understand the challenges of entrepreneurship? Are they supportive, or all doom and gloom? You don't have to cut them out of your life, but you've got to connect with other entrepreneurs. Try an organization like BNI or Toastmasters, and pay attention to how you feel in the room. Give it a fair chance, but don't force yourself to continue attending if it isn't the right fit. It's all about experimentation and persistence. It may sound contrary, but it's important to remember that once you've found the right group, you also need to be conscious of when it's time to leave. When you're taking the next step in your business, you want to surround yourself with people who are already accomplishing what you want to accomplish. Want to write a book? Time to surround yourself with authors. Be deliberate and big-picture about who and what are going to help you most, and then get out there and make it happen. “Introverted entrepreneurs: Surround yourself with people who are on the sa...
