There is a unique conundrum that many highly ambitious and driven people experience in their pursuit of bigger goals: there is always a “next level” of success to pursue. But if you find yourself constantly moving the goalposts in life, never truly reaching a sense of satisfaction despite your achievements, then you might be trapped in a “should life.” When our actions are dictated by societal norms, cultural expectations, and inherited rules, leaving us overwhelmed, anxious, burned out, and unfulfilled, it's worth pausing to reflect if this is the life you want, or you feel you must accept to avoid blowing up what's important to you.  In episode 426 of Amplify Your Success, I'm joined by Marni Battista to explore practical ways to break free from the suffocating "should life" and start embracing a more meaningful and authentic existence. Marni tackles this pressing issue by urging us to dismantle these invisible barriers and instead live a life that truly energizes us by blowing our hair back. She explains how identifying small, actionable changes, like recognizing one's self-worth and challenging ingrained beliefs, can lead to profound life transformations without completely overhauling your current situation. What would it be like if your life felt a little bit more like a vacation? Now, before you freak out and go, that is for other people. That is not possible. That is for irresponsible people who don't have responsibilities and who don't have bills. That's not real life. I hear you. And I want you to know I've been one of those skeptics for years.  But today, with this guest, Marni Battista, I think you're going to hear something you maybe haven't heard before. Marni helps you understand what unspoken rules and what invisible laws are running your life. “I was just really inspired by the reinventing. That is possible if you follow your soul,” says Marni.  Her first step is breaking down the “shoulds” in life. Question every assumption because the unspoken rules that we have about our lives and what things “should” look like are so baked in.  For example, that you're not supposed to work on weekends, that you're supposed to close your laptop at 5:00 p.m., and that you're supposed to eat vegetables. All of these things are shoulds.  “Think about it this way. If you've read a great fantasy book or you watch shows like Bridgerton or movies like Marvel … you either get in with the rules of the world or you go, “no, I can't get with this,” and you abandon it,” says Marni. “But once you're in, you don't question it. Fairies fly and Iron Man has a suit, whatever it is.” Examine the world of your life. If you were going to share it with someone who didn't know anything about you, what would the rules be? Those are the pieces that you can start to deconstruct what your shoulds are so that you then can begin to question, is this designed by me? For me? Is this essential, explains Marni. “We are so focused on making other people happy and what's convenient for other people at the expense of our own flow and engagement,” says Marni. Once you've identified your shoulds, you can ask: where did you learn this? Who told you this? How far back does it go? “You can choose to keep them, by the way, of course, because not all shoulds are bad. And that's the point, consciously choosing them so that you are designing a life and a world that is aligned with who you really are at the core,” says Marni. One small step at a time, you can start to make adjustments to your life to align it with your soul map.  “Shoulds from the outside may or may not apply because you are living your life designed for you, not by everyone else,” says Marni. “That's why I say design a life you don't need to retire from. Find work that you love so much. You don't need to be free from it because it's just you doing your thing, and it doesn't even have to be paid work. It's just you living your gift. That's freedom.” Marni says most people have the fear fantasy of being broke or homeless if they dare to pursue their dream life. She says they always come up with a safety net because it is real life, and people have to pay their bills.  “Most people just imagine or dream a 10% variation of their current life,” says Marni, who adds that experimenting is what helps you unfold and uncover the things that are beyond the 10% you can imagine. “Actually allowing your emotional self to have psychological safety so that you can start to intuit and bring information in,” says Marni. “There's no Thelma and Louise moment in this. We want to like, live life on your terms without blowing up the life that you have.” Connect with Marni Battista: https://www.instituteforlivingcourageously.com/  Decode Your Destiny Quiz: https://www.decodeyourdestinyquiz.com/  Your Radical Living Challenge: 7 Questions for A Meaningful Life:  Other GoG episodes you might want to check out: Ready to Reinvent Yourself? Guest Introduction: In this heartfelt episode, we're diving deep into the world of holiday relationships and personal growth with Marni Battista, a well-known relationship expert who has been guiding people toward self-improvement, emotional health, and better dating experiences for over a decade. Marni shares her insights on goal setting for relationships, how self-talk shapes our reality, and the power of self-assessment in creating authentic connections. Episode Introduction: Navigating the holiday season can be tough when it comes to relationships, personal growth, and emotional well-being. Whether you're single and reflecting on dating patterns or looking to improve communication with loved ones, this episode offers practical tips on self-assessment, goal setting, and breaking free from negative self-talk. Top 3 Takeaways: Assess, Don't Judge – Focus on Growth, Not Drama (21:15) Data Over Drama – Let Facts Guide Your Dating Strategy (29:43) Self-Talk Shapes Your Self-Acceptance and Attraction (35:12)     Main Topics 1. The Power of Self-Assessment in Relationships (21:15) “Look at the facts, don't turn them into a giant story where you're the victim of circumstance. Assess what worked and what didn't, and then make adjustments.” Explanation: Approaching relationships and personal growth with a mindset of self-assessment rather than judgment helps to foster a proactive, solution-oriented attitude. This process of reflection allows individuals to identify patterns and make deliberate changes without being weighed down by negative emotions or self-blame. 2. Using Data to Drive Dating Goals (29:43) “Are your photos reflective of who you really are? Is your profile written from a place of what you want to create or from what you don't want?” Explanation: Successful dating requires intentionality and clarity. By treating dating like any other goal-setting process—based on real data and not emotional stories—it becomes easier to align actions with the desired outcomes. This approach minimizes wasted effort and increases the chances of finding authentic connections. 3. Rewriting Negative Self-Talk to Boost Emotional Health (35:12) “I don't talk to myself the way I talk to others. The tone of my inner voice matters—it's either empowering or debilitating.” Explanation: Self-talk is a powerful force that shapes confidence, emotional health, and attraction. By becoming aware of negative self-talk patterns and shifting to a more supportive internal dialogue, individuals can enhance their self-acceptance, which directly influences how they show up in relationships and life. She has dedicated her life to empowering women to redefine success and live fully.Childhood Experiences:Marni grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in a close-knit Jewish community of 40 families. Her father's international business career brought global visitors to their town. At 10, she joined a French-American exchange program, which included skiing near the Swiss Alps. This experience boosted her confidence and adventurous spirit, shaping her future. In high school, when homecoming conflicted with the Jewish high holidays, Marni resisted her mother's suggestion to address the issue with the school board, fearing it would highlight her minority status. This experience deepened her sense of belonging, a value she carries into adulthood.Influential Communities:When Marni decided to design her life, she initially planned to pursue an MFA in writing. After consulting mentors and writers, she opted to "create her own MFA." She built her skills through writing communities, courses, and a structured book club. This self-designed path solidified her identity as an author and her commitment to the literary world.Temperament and Personality:Marni inherited her love of storytelling from her father, who captivated audiences with his humor and wisdom. He also taught her the value of listening and genuine curiosity. This skill became Marni's superpower in marketing, relationships, and coaching. Though not a traditional teacher, Marni uses her expertise to create impactful curricula and share her passion for storytelling through workshops, videos, and interviews.Cultural Epiphanies:As a young mom in her children's private school PTA, Marni encountered a community that felt misaligned with her values. After recommending a quirky, intelligent friend for a leadership role, Marni faced backlash from others who deemed her friend unsuitable. Rather than compromise her principles, Marni stood by her friend and distanced herself from the group. Though isolating, this decision clarified her values and inspired her to seek new communities aligned with her integrity. What Brings Out the Best in Marni?Marni thrives in spaces filled with connection, integrity, responsibility, and active engagement. She loves being outdoors, playing for the joy of it, and exploring new experiences—like her first fantasy football league.Soapbox Moment:Marni challenges us to live life on our terms. She empowers individuals to define success without being confined by societal expectations. Support the show

Summary   In this episode of Life Check Yourself, Marni Battista engages in a profound conversation with Jamal Javangi, exploring the depths of human experience, the quest for survival, and the journey towards thriving. They discuss the cultural influences that shape our understanding of loneliness and suffering, the four core survival drivers that motivate human behavior, and the illusion of happiness tied to material possessions. The conversation emphasizes the importance of being present and finding peace within oneself to create a fulfilling life. Jamal shares insights on how to navigate internal conflicts and the significance of starting with being rather than doing to achieve true abundance and happiness.   Takeaways   Everyone wants to survive, but ultimately, we all want to thrive. The four core survival drivers are safety, freedom, significance, and love. Material possessions do not equate to happiness; it's about the feelings they represent. To achieve peace, we must confront our internal conflicts rather than avoid them. True fulfillment comes from understanding what we really want to feel. Starting with being allows for a more abundant and fulfilling life. The mind often misleads us into thinking external achievements will bring internal happiness. We need to learn how to resource our inner selves for true abundance. The journey of life is about creating a peaceful existence for ourselves and the world. Awareness of our thoughts and feelings is crucial in navigating life's challenges.   The Four Core Drivers of Human Fulfillment (Timestamp: 10:25) Jamal describes the four essential drivers—safety, freedom, significance, and love—as foundational to human happiness and thriving. When these are unmet, individuals often find themselves feeling “stuck,” seeking external validation that never fully satisfies. Embracing these core needs from within fosters a deep sense of purpose and resilience, helping one build a fulfilling life from a place of inner security. We all need to feel significant, free, safe, and loved. Without these, we're still in survival mode.   Moving from Survival Mode to True Freedom (Timestamp: 22:10) Modern society has made survival relatively easier, freeing up the space to ask deeper questions about meaning and purpose. Jamal points out that although basic needs are met, a subtle, internal “survival mode” persists, pushing many to seek fulfillment through external measures. By redefining freedom as a choice in mindset and actions, one can shift from scarcity to abundance, empowering them to engage more joyfully and purposefully in life. We're not here just to survive. When you start with ‘being,' work and creation become joyful acts, not survival mechanisms.   Finding Inner Peace by Confronting Inner Conflicts (Timestamp: 35:18) True peace, Jamal explains, is not the absence of conflict but the ability to sit with it, understanding and accepting one's fears and insecurities without letting them dictate actions. This conscious embrace of uncomfortable emotions dissolves the inner resistance that often blocks personal growth. By facing these parts of oneself with compassion, one creates a sustainable foundation for happiness and fulfillment. In order to find peace, we have to get present with our inner conflicts, not avoid them. That's where true harmony begins. Over our first three episodes, I've noticed that there's an inescapable common theme: courage.  It takes courage to walk away from old patterns, old ways of being, old aspects of identity by which others know you, and by which you've known yourself your entire life. It takes courage to step into the unknown, the in between, to find steady footing on the shaky ground of transition.  (In fact, if a transition feels too easy, it might be because we moved too quickly, trying to fill up the emptiness inherent to the unknown, to new beginnings.)  This show is going to place The Courage It Takes front and center. We'll talk about the various stages we encounter as we instigate and cycle through change within our lives. I believe there's value in paying close attention to the “in between” — that wonderful stage I have come to know so well, of  being “no longer” in one place and “not yet” in the next. To navigate this walk, I've invited a new guest to our show, and invited back a familiar face from Episode 1.  In This Episode (03:40) Finding the courage to move in new directions and rediscover ourselves (10:45) How Marni's year of radical faith strengthened her “courage muscle” (13:06) Michael on the rewards of allowing our higher selves to make courageous decisions (22:48) Marni's fight for her life as her source of courage (25:24) Michael's concept of courage as an energy inherent in each of us  (31:49) Self-acceptance, authenticity and intuition as key elements of courage (40:10) How are you being asked to be courageous right now, at this moment in life? (44:02) How to embrace uncertainty while having faith in the idea of “divine timing” (49:56) “Trust the ceremony”: returning to our places of inner courage (56:40) Why courage requires bold and radical action Notable Quotes “I remember this moment where I was like, if I can't dig deep for myself – because at that time I didn't even feel worthy of it – I thought about the fact that the universe gave me three daughters and I was like, I have to be courageous for them because the one thing I wanna be is an awesome mom. And I might be a complete disaster in all these other ten things. And that was the first time where I was like, I don't wanna do this. I wanna hide. I wanna shut down. I wanna quit. And I remember just thinking, like I have to have something to fight for. And at that time it was that energy of fighting for my life. That was the beginning of that courage. And I think over time, that energy shifts, but sometimes when you're really in that broken place, like you gotta find something to fight for.” – Marni (22:48) “I really think that courage is an energy that is inherent in every single human being. … I believe it's inherent to who we are as souls, to who we are as spirits in our divinity. When we remember to connect to our divinity, it is easier to be courageous because that is an energy that is instilled in us from birth. I mean, just look at toddlers, look at infants. They're just like all over the place. They have no fear of the unknown. It's the ego that has the fear.” – Michael (25:24) Our Guests Transformational leader and coach Marni Battista is the founder of The Institute for Living Courageously and Dating with Dignity. She is also the host of the podcast Life Check Yourself and author of memoir/self-help book “How to Find a Quality Guy Without Going on 200 Dates.” Marni's work has been featured in Glamour, Cosmopolitan, The Oprah Magazine and on Dr. Phil.  Doctoral-trained therapist and healing practitioner Michael Smith is the founder of Empath Connection. You deserve to be living the quality of life that is meant for you.  During this pandemic, as we are forced to slow down in our personal life with our distractions stripped away, it becomes clear what brings us meaning, happiness, and joy and what might be missing from our lives.   Two ways women settle for the life they get: Not having a man in their life — They believe they don’t need a man to be happy. Having the wrong guy in their life — A man gives only crumbs or won’t commit.  Research shows people who are in loving intimate relationships have healthier and happier lives with less stress.  Are you settling for the life you get instead of the life you want because somewhere deep down you believe you can not have it all? Where does the belief come from?   Tame the Gremlin [18:54] You know that little voice in your head that tells you what you can and can’t have? That is the gremlin. Your gremlin may tell you that it is better to be safe than deal with the hassle of being in a relationship. It may tell you to be grateful for what you do have instead of wanting more. Your gremlin preys on self-doubt and fear. It keeps you stuck in negativity. It steals your joy. If you have a wall up around your heart and have shut down, it is time to tame the gremlin! It’s the secret to getting the life you really want and attracting the man you deserve.   Lose the 10% [25:17] Consider all the ways you have tried to find your soulmate in the past. How close have those things brought you to meet your perfect man? Are you still just crossing your fingers hoping a high-quality guy finds you?  You need to lose the 10%. What is the 10%? The small things you do or believe that cause you to sabotage every relationship you have.    Discover what your 10% is by asking yourself these questions:  Do you leak masculine energy? Is your love shield up? Do you give off pawn energy? Quality men perceive women who have 'pawn' energy as needy and insecure or they are high-maintenance.    Discover the 10% that is holding you back by:  Reveal — Uncover your unique 10% Release — An integrated approach to deprogram the 10% Rejuvenate — Adopt a strategy that makes you irresistible    Leverage Your Time During Corona [39:42] Do not sit and suffer through wasted time during this pandemic. Use this time as an opportunity to get out of fear and loneliness and find a man who is perfect for you. Leverage this time to transform your life.  Believe it or not, social distancing has made it easy to find a quality, committed guy. The men who are online dating right now are looking for the real deal. Meaning those who were in it for hookups, or something casual have opted out. And, with physical distancing, you will not be tempted to go too fast if there was strong physical chemistry with a guy.  70% of users on one of the top dating sites are ready and open for digital dating and in-house video dates.   Invest in Mentoring [46:19] You need more than advice. If you could have done it on your own, you would be with a high-quality guy already. In every part of your life, you figure things out, you do what needs to be done and you make your wants a reality.  Do not be embarrassed or ashamed that you need help in this part of your life. Do not think getting help is a sign of weakness. It is not. It’s OK to have someone hold your hand through this process and keep you accountable. Get support from a mentor. If you are finally done with being alone, one of the most self-honoring things you can do during the pandemic is to claim out loud that being in an intimate relationship is what you want.  If you are serious about getting the life you desire and transforming your love life is a priority for you, book a one-hour session with my team at DWDAPPLY.com. Dating Again Marni shares a great tip for figuring out what entering the dating world would be like. After gathering the stories we have about it in our minds, she suggests that we challenge the stories that could turn into fears or excuses. Her method is light-hearted and creative but really eye-opening! Entering the dating arena after a while can require a bit of preparation. Marni recommends practising dating by targeting the areas you are less comfortable with like dressing or confidence. For those surviving divorces or reaching their golden years, Marni encourages you not to run away from dating but lean in and take a step in a direction that could lead you to happiness. Marni shares advice on communicating openly as a vital element when dating to ensure both parties are clear on where each stand and if there are any concerns or issues upfront. Dating While Parenting She shares advice for parents in the dating world – advocating that time is separately allocated for dates and that your expectations regarding your partner's role in your kids' life are clearly voiced early on. Where to Find a Date If you are wondering where you can meet your perfect partner, Marni recommends Match.com. From her findings, dedicating at least 30 min a day to one chosen app should return decent results. Beware of free apps like Plenty of Fish. Marni warns that these sites can be cumbersome. She mentions a few niche sites that you can find in the links below. “Be the person you want to attract” Marni has experienced people unexpectedly finding partners within their current circles eg: work, clubs they belong to etc. She suggests dressing well and being aware of the habits and interests of people around you when you are looking for that someone special. A connection can happen in the most unexpected place. You will also hear her view on matchmakers. She reveals the right age for trying matchmaking services and what people generally look for. How Does Dating Work Today? With men having to adjust to the times, Marni explains that their biggest fears include rejection and being perceived as predators. For this reason, women need to be much more direct about what they want. Paying can be a grey area for many. Marni's advice is fair and allows men to express their chivalry and for women to reciprocate in return when the time is right. Safety An absolute must is safety during dating. Marni shares some great tips in terms of defining available time upfront and not using your personal environment as a venue for your first meeting. Red flags include your potential date refusing a video meeting! Dealing with Quarantine Funny, thoughtful ideas given by Marni reveal how easy and special dating can still be if you are in quarantine. For those that just need to abide by social distancing, Marni suggests hiking or picnics within the rules. In this episode, Marni Battista teaches us how to identify and begin to release the shame message that we picked up in childhood and is ruining all our relationships. Dating coach, Marni Battista, is the queen of making her clients irresistible to men in today's dating environment. In a world complicated by the ‘buffet' --try it and leave it'-- approach to dating and relationship, further complicated by technology and increasingly confusing gender roles, Dating With Dignity teaches successful women a cutting edge process based on neuroscience and authenticity to attract not just any man, but the one who will be your partner, equal, and person with whom you can create a pathway to a life of meaning, intimacy and personal fulfillment. Marni is a certified professional Dating and Relationship Coach and Expert, writer, and nationally recognized print and online magazine expert. She has been featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, Yahoo! Marni was named one of the 10 Best Women's Dating Experts by DatingAdvice.com In this episode, we discuss: ·      How Marni's personal story of “having a bad picker” led her to helping others identify their own patterns rather than blame others for their trouble in relationships. ·      How we should look at life and our experiences as data, not drama, to identify our patterns so we can work on them. ·      What those patterns – like dating unavailable people or people we think we can fix – are telling us about how we actually feel about ourselves. And spoiler alert – it's more complicated than just self-worth. ·      The most common shame messages we have and how they play out in our lives and relationships. ·      How ultimately it comes down to changing neural pathways which takes time and a holistic approach. ·      And how our attitude and beliefs affect our energy and the vibe we are putting out into the world.
