This is the audio from a video we have just published on our YouTube channel – an interview with Gérard Biard. To make sure you never miss great content like this, subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/@spiked  On 7 January 2015, two Islamist terrorists, armed with Kalashnikovs, burst into the offices of Charlie Hebdo. 12 people were murdered, eight of them writers and cartoonists at the left-wing, satirical newspaper. Charlie's supposed crime? It had published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The massacre sparked outpourings of solidarity, but also a cowardly, censorious backlash. Many decried the killings, but decried Charlie's supposed ‘provocations', too. 10 years on from the massacre, spiked went to Paris to meet with Gérard Biard, Charlie's editor-in-chief. We discussed the attack, the fight for free speech and the crucial importance of courage.

On 7 October last year, Ada Sagi's life changed forever. The 75-year-old grandmother of six - who has spent most of her life working towards peace between Israelis and Palestinians - was having a morning coffee at home on the Nir Oz Kibbutz, on the border with Gaza, when suddenly several men working for Hamas burst into her home and forced her barefoot by gunpoint onto a motorbike and took her hostage, alongside scores of others. The Arabic and Hebrew teacher who still supports students through her work, was imprisoned for 53 days at an apartment in Khan Younis until she was freed as part of a deal between the Israeli Government and Hamas. In her first UK interview, Today's Emma Barnett speaks to Ada, six months on from her release. She shares the details of her ordeal; her thoughts about those who captured her, the global reaction and the actions of the Israeli government since last October. As a lifelong peace activist, right at the end of the conversation, she shares a stark view of the future as she sees it.But Ada Sagi began by speaking about hearing security alarms going off in the kibbutz on the morning of 7 October, alerting her and the other hundreds of other residents they were under attack and then about the moment, men armed with Kalashnikovs, entered her home.

When Eleanor Mills left the Sunday Times she'd worked for for 23 years, she felt like she'd been pushed off a roof. Who was she without the big job that had given her a cloak of power? It was only when someone said “Change is difficult, but you'll be alright” that she started to relax.  She says, “It's like the tide going out, sometimes there will be a big wave which knocks you over but the general direction will be better.” This gave her permission to find it tough. To endure. It was such a relief. After a lot of thinking and talking she decided to be the change she wanted to see in the world. Noon was born out of her desire to help women find a new path through midlife and beyond, to change the narrative.  Midlife is when those dreams we had when we were young – but put aside to earn a living or raise a family – can finally be revisited. It's never too late to be what you wanted to be. Eleanor Mills is an award-winning editor, writer and broadcaster. She worked for The Sunday Times for 23 years as Editorial Director, Editor of The Sunday Times Magazine, and as a columnist and interviewer (interrogating everyone from Mikhail Gorbachev to Sheryl Sandberg and Theresa May). As Chair of Women in Journalism (2014 – 2021) she argued that the media must be a true mirror, not a distorting lens, which is what happens if decision makers are not diverse. She is a trustee of the Society of Editors, a board member of Reporters Sans Frontiers and her publications include Cupcakes and Kalashnikovs: 100 Years of the Best Journalism by Women, published by Hachette. She is working on her first novel and lives in London with her husband and two teenage daughters. www.noon.org.uk

It's not easy fighting for nature in many of the former Soviet states. Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent reports from Tajikistan, on the trail of the snow leopard and the extraordinary people who protect them. This high corner of Central Asia is home to the world's biggest species of wild sheep and goats, prey of arguably the most beautiful of the big cats- the extravagantly furred snow leopard. After the fall of the Soviet Union a vicious civil war killed 100,000 people and saw many more displaced and starving. Kalashnikovs and hungry people are never good news for wildlife and, sure enough, the wildlife of the mountains was decimated. In the last few years local conservationists have taken it on themselves to declare reserves and persuade their neighbours to reduce their hunting. With minimal funding from the government and international agencies these conservationists have had to find their own ways to pay for the protection of the reserves. Most of the money to employ rangers has come from selling licences to hunt small numbers of Marco Polo sheep, Ibex and Markhor wild goats. It's a controversial approach but, in sheer numbers of endangered species, it seems to be working. Can the improvements continue as climate change brings ever harsher winters and drier summers and regional instability keeps the wildlife tourists away? Antonia meets the conservationists trying their best to protect their wildlife in the face of enormous odds. Producer: Alasdair Cross

The Pentagon explained Wednesday why the U.S does not support the Polish plan to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine, as Vice President Kamala Harris landed in Warsaw for the first leg of her trip to meet with regional allies. Zhan Beleniuk, the sole Black MP in the Ukrainian Parliament and a 2020 Olympic gold medalist, and his fellow MP Oleksandra Ustinova join us to discuss. Then, we highlight how Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Ukraine's first Jewish president, has used video and social media to personally and forcefully rebut Putin's absurdist history regarding Nazis. Next, amid historic sanctions against Russia, concern is growing for Americans detained in Russia, including WNBA superstar Brittney Griner. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee discusses calling on the Russian government to release Griner and other detained Americans. Finally, Joy brings you a story produced by NBC News on professional ballet dancers in Ukraine joining the frontlines against Putin's invasion, swapping their ballet shoes for Kalashnikovs. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

Step 50: The Hero Trendency

Let's THINK about it

The Hero Story Perhaps there has always been an effort towards optimization, and it generally looks like technology. When speaking of self optimization, or overcoming , we are speaking of the hero's journey popularized by Joseph Campbell. Campbell spoke a lot of the parallels of the external journey and the internal journey… the external circumstances gave the individual the opportunity to react and grow.In the 50's-70's there was a wave of belief in unlocking human potential through psycho-science-type things like intensive practice hypnosis and subliminal training… or just LSD. Some of these practices were previously used in religious awakening, but we wrapped them up under the guise of science, and then they were abused by programs like MK Ultra.During this time, people thought of the human as a blank slate that could be written, molded or shaped. (optimized?) An example of this is Laszlo Polgar, born in Hungary, and with an idea about raising children, ended up getting married and having his first child in 1969. He and his wife Clara, raised children around the idea that they could create a genius through specific narrow focus. They had three children, the Polgar sisters, who all excelled at chess, reaching amazing heights, and were declared National Treasures. In fiction, chess is too boring, so the blank slates are in the genre of assassin Killers: examples are Kill Bill, Atomic Blonde, or Leon the Professional where they are trained, usually for revenge or duty. On the darker side you have children raised by handlers or governments as weapons, like in John Wick, Black Widow, Hannah, or Kate. So what if instead of being a badass with Kalashnikovs and stilettos you're a phenom with golf clubs? This is the Tiger Woods story, a history of brutal authoritarian parenting generating mental resiliency and overcoming. A lot of success, but a lot of trauma.Physically, many of us are not capable of such heroic heights: we cannot optimize enough to overcome our genetics, despite how much protein we consume. Enter science to the rescue as the mythical augmented man: Perhaps the Six Million Dollar Man or the darker side of Robocop, more of an automaton cyborg. Talk about efficiency: just turn the man into a machine. We are culturally conditioned to accept this is the way of the future as far back as cartoons like Inspector Gadget: the bumbling doofus with all sorts of extensions and rockets and wheels that both saved the day and naturally lead to slapstick pratfalls.Backtrack: This takes us back to an earlier podcast, step 28, in which I mentioned Henri Bergson, and his summary of what makes something funny, which is “the mechanical encrusted upon the living.”Of course, the real warning: when we lean too heavily into external power, technology, optimization (or even habits and productivity), we cease to be human in a certain way. We trade in the hard path of “overcoming” for the easy path of instant power, and in that substitution, we lose something. Yet, an alternate form optimization technology exists: Arcane Magics. I'm going to suggest, this path of learning the secrets of Arcane magics of habit stacking and personal productivity is the most alluring current path to be super, to achieve your potential. From Fiction to Fact While I have been talking about science through fictional stories, in many ways it has stepped into reality. You want to see something insane: look up clips from the 1920's Olympics compared to todays Olympics: Over 100 years the science of optimization and dedicated practice works… physically at least… until they turn into that unhinged balance beam killer super model from “The Spy who dumped me.” In America, we seem to live in a society that links success and progress and achievement with wealth and appearance. This is the manifest destiny of self-actualization woven into the Protestant work ethic, capitalist, American Mythos… and technology is often the vehicle and the key.But dedication to science and technology is problematically deterministic and class eugenics can spring up from it, as played out in the movie Gattaca. The secret to tricking an unjust technocracy? Keep secrets, and work harder than everyone else. But in this age of the internet we need to know exactly how: what was his diet? What drugs was he on? Boxers or briefs? And this is the trap we are in today: there are so many paths laid out before us by the millionaires and self-hacking crowds that we have a myriad of paths to successful optimization. Yet when someone, like in Gattaca, has an overpowering, all-consuming goal to be more… or in Kill Bill to kill more… we find their dedication and focus grants results. This can be called “dedicated practice” and myths of a 10,000 hour rule to mastery circulate around it. The beauty of it is that maybe we don't need neural implants and bionic arms. Maybe the new magics are habit stacks, routines, the mystical arcana of time-blocking and flow state. The only thing left is to find an all-consuming, overpowering desire that we can shape our life around… and that is not so much hero stuff, as a very old question of all of mankind: what is my purpose? What is my mission?  The Superman, the Ubermensch, Nietzsche How can we do an episode on superheroes, and overcoming without at least bringing up Friedrich Nietzsche. He popularized the concept of Übermensch or Overman or Beyondman… now most commonly seen as Superman.(By the way, this concept is affiliated with the Nazi party due to Nietzsche's sister misusing his texts.)The Overman is really a man of overcoming… and to confuse it with physical power as the Superman warrior is quite superficial. In our society many people appear superhero, overcoming physicality, but staying in vanity. The hero's journey is ultimately a journey towards self-integration, towards wholeness, and as Jung said “individuation” through the unification of opposites. In Nietzsche's book thus spoke zarathustra the prophet Zarathustra, who comes down from his mountaintop to share his knowledge with masses is spurned by the people. He attempts to tell them of the Ubermensch, but they reject this hard life of overcoming. All spiteful and disappointed, Zarathustra decides to prophesy the disgusting concept of Last man: a lazy decadent person, born of a civilization incapable of standing up to challenge or hardship, only interested in comfort. The last man takes no risks, preferring security. This is the soft and secure rationalist who has forgotten how to dream and everything the Ubermensch would do appears as illness, or madness.Intentional hardship? Are you crazy? So, how do we push back against the zombie conformity of security that seems so rational? It seems – indeed – to be illogical to try. Isn't it in our best interest to protect ourselves and stay comfortably in the middle of the herd? Yes, for survival maybe, but what about thriving? What about self-actualization?One way is to find something external to ourselves that is more important, someway we can help: A hero uses the challenge, the tension and hardship, to manifest creativity, to innovate. Are scientists and technologists our superheroes, the innovators or our time? How about the optimizers, the overcomers?  The guys and gals hitting flow state, or testing intermittent fasting: testing, and testing, and suffering, and sharing all this data with us. Are they climbing the mountain and coming back down with the mountain-top insights? Perhaps. But what if their motivation is internet rewards, or just a whole bucket full of hacks? That would be a less than noble goal.Experimentation can happen culturally, too. Can we not appreciate the heroism of the alternate lifestyle? The real challenge, the wisdom handed down to us through some religion, philosophy, and myths is to blend all opposites: overcome and move beyond dualities of good and evil, conscious and unconscious, spiritual and earthly… this is how you become an individual. Most of us are what is called a “dividual”, not undivided, as an “individual.” We are the divided self. Fragmented. We have not overcome or transcended, or as Hegel would say “subsumed.” Sure, we might be fit, we may look like the image of the superhero, but is maintaining appearances more like the act of the lastman? I am not saying they cannot coincide, but the motivation is a vital distinction to understanding conformity and overcoming. What I do know, is we -in our society- are really good at superficial appearances… placing the signifier before the signified.  The point, I think, is that to become a real human, a whole and integrated self, is a harder and a more heroic a journey than scientific shortcutting or following formulas that guarantee results. Sure, science/tech is great and helpful, but it shouldn't do the overcoming for you: you have to do that. Also, the hero is often portrayed alone, the monk ascending the mountain to find enlightenment or Superman in his Fortress of Solitude after keeping secrets, but you do not have to do this alone. Sure, you will have to work and push back against mindless conformity, but take the journey with others and avoid the solipsistic individuality of the shallow villain.

Over 65k people have fled their homes because of violent extremism in Burkina Faso's East region, nearly 1 million nationally. I recently spoke with a man from Namoungou (Burkina Faso), now living in Fada N'Gourma, who left his home fearing for his life and the safety of his family.  Due to limited support from the Burkinabè government and international partners, he says the people of the East are living "alone in the face of sad fates." Gems in the book of Revelation (Authored by Roger Kirby) Part 146 - Revelation 14:1-5The army of God The picture of the Lamb standing on Mount Zion takes us straight to Psalm 2:6-11 where we read: “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. What John has written here is clearly a pictorial representation of how that prophecy will be fulfilled. Here we have 144,000 marshalled as the army of the Lamb. Not of course an army, which is to go out with Kalashnikovs etc. but one, that is to fight with love and mercy for the glory of the Lord. As before this number is carefully judged so that when it was first written it might not be so big a number that everyone who heard it might presume that they would be included and not so small that they might worry that there was no room for them. Now it has to be several billion to have the same meaning for all the Christians alive today. They are a mighty army heralded with great natural sounds of water and thunder and great human sounds of harps and singing. In the early days when a Jewish army had to go to war they were instructed to abstain from sexual relations so that they might be symbolically as pure as possible. That is what is referred to here in the statement that the Lord’s army were to be virgins. It should not be taken literally. They are to be followers - the word so often used in the Gospels to refer to those who believed in Jesus as the Messiah. Once again this chapter will be read between by those Christians in countries where faith is a nice comfortable way to live your life and in a very different way by those who live where to believe in Jesus puts them into an unwanted category and possibly constant danger. Even in the comfortable countries there are points to note here. 14:4b-5 talk about following the Lamb wherever he goes - not just on Sunday mornings! And goes on to remind the followers that they have been purchased - at a terrible price; that they are but part of a mighty army - now found throughout the world in all except its most hidden corners; and that purity expressed as absolute honesty in every word is the mark of the true believer. For the uncomfortable countries there is the promise of a future judgement when all the greatest citadels of evil will be destroyed and there will be eventually a terrible display of the wrath of God against all the wickedness and failure to worship the true and only God. Perhaps the most important thing of all to note in this chapter is that after the great description of the Lord’s army we are not told that it was ever used. All the action is carried out by spirit beings. We are not to go to war on behalf of the Lamb. However those days will call for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who are to keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. How to Be More Creative and Innovative Ex Disney Executive Duncan Wardle Reveals Easy to Follow Creative Strategies Listening to Duncan Wardle and his Disney stories will reveal some easy to follow techniques that can make you more creative. The sort of creative that Blockbuster could and should have been when faced with their category killer, Netflix. Duncan reveals the approach Netflix took to unpicking Blockbuster's dominance. Can you be more creative? Of course you can be creative. We all can. It helps though if you have the guidance of a creativity expert. Duncan Wardle spoke to us from Indianapolis, Indiana. He was in a hotel lobby, but you'd hardly know. Duncan's Background At Edinburgh University, he noticed a picture of Mickey Mouse on the notice board. A chance to be one of 5 students at the UK Pavilion at the Epcot Centre. In 1986, he had an interview with Becky, a 6' 7" female Texan. He got the gig. He joined lots of other young people and soon discovered that the Mexicans seemed to be having better parties! He married a Mexican. On June 25th, they will have been married 30 years! No doubt they'll toast the event with Tequila! After a year, he returned to London and phone the Disney London office. At the time they had just 16 people. Now there is nearer 2,000 people there. He phoned the office EVERY DAY for 27 DAYS. Until they got fed up of him calling. He got a half hour interview and was given a job as Cappuccino Boy. He'd get coffee for his boss and collate 50 press kits per day. He had his Disney start! Creative Things Duncan Did in His Early Career The job of that Disney office was to get Europe acclimatised to EuroDisney. With a small budget and a lot of guts, they made a name for themselves. Like flying into the Soviet Union. In a giant Mickey Mouse hot air balloon. There was a deal to tether the balloon in Red Square. It broke loose in the wind and it takes it over the walls of the Kremlin. They landed in the Kremlin. Surrounded by guards with Kalashnikovs. All they wanted though was a picture next to Mickey Mouse! He persuaded Lord King to add big ears to one of his Concorde aircraft. That's creative! Like a Kid in a Candy Store (Sweet Shop) Duncan got a promotion to Director of PR to Disney in the States because he'd got in front of then President Bill Clinton. He'd also got an audience with John Major too. Disney was impressed, they'd not been able to do that themselves. The President pardons a turkey at Thanksgiving. The turkey becomes the happiest turkey in the country. Duncan cut a deal with the White House to take the happiest turkey to the happiest place in America - Disneyland! He built an Olympic sized swimming pool for Michael Phelps to swim down Main Street! Duncan got Buzz Lightyear into space! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Duncan-Vid.mp4 The Toy Story went, that Duncan persuaded NASA to bring Buzz (his son James's Buzz) back to Earth. Here's Duncan telling the story of Buzz Lightyear. You have to see that this is creative. If not. Stop reading! He threatened NASA he'd tell the world's press if they followed through on kicking him into space rather than brining him home. He was asked to figure out WHAT MADE PEOPLE INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE Duncan surveyed 5,000 people in the Disney Organisation. He found 5 reasons why people weren't as creative as they could be. Time - the lack of time. I don't have time to think. There was no single definition of innovation and creativity. To prevent arguments about being creative. Turning a "we build it and you will come" culture to customer centric. Walt Disneyworld is the largest single site employer in the United States. 100,000 employees! Consultants who came to Disney, did a project and left again, didn't leave their how to be creative insight. They took their money and left. The organisation wasn't learning. So Duncan realised he needed Disney's own design...

¿suena a misterio?

Jeff Nyquist interviews Victor and Marina Kalashnikov, two Moscow journalists blacklisted by the state. The Kalashnikovs have interviewed leading political, military and intelligence officials in Russia (especially former Soviet officials). A few years ago, when Gorbachev found what they were doing, he warned his former colleagues to stop talking to the Kalashnikov’s. According to Victor and Marina, the old Soviet structures remain in place, beneath the surface, reconstructing a new type of dictatorship in Russia. With new positions in Latin America and Africa, Russia is building a new anti-American bloc. Using oil and gas as economic weapons, Russia has combined with China to undermine the U.S. dollar.
