Kathleen opens the show drinking a Holy Donut Stout by Maine's Lone Pine Brewing, brought to her by her friend and fellow comedian Kelly MacFarland. She also gives a shoutout to Little Big Town for the “Day Drinking” trucker hat that was sent after Kathleen tasted their Day Drinking canned wine on a previous Pubcast. TERMITE SHOUTOUTS: Kathleen gives thanks to the Termites who leave notes at shows and send mail to her PO Box. She begins by thanking Termite Adam, who made his mother proud by sending the completed set of South Carolina rocks glasses. Also big thanks to Termite Summer for the Trader Joe's Carolina Gold bbq sauce and the “Calm Down Karen” t-shirt. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, which she doesn't like because she doesn't like ANY pumpkin flavor (she and her dad always ask her mom to make a chocolate pie for any holiday), and then moves onto Taco Bell's Avocado Ranch sauce, which she recommends putting on anything. Kathleen finishes her tasting by sampling Cheeto's Crunch Pop Mix, telling Termites to stick with the original Cheeto's. ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM REVIEW: As a follow-up to Episode 38, Kathleen visited the ISGM when she was recently in Boston for shows. She describes the rooms and the artwork exhibited (which you can also see video of on her YouTube channel), with her favorite area being the iconic courtyard. Then in continuing to do the Lord's work, Kathleen mentions her official chowder tasting at Black Rose, the Chart House, and Legal Seafood in downtown Boston. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen provides an update on the Queens, reporting that Queen Tanya has canceled the remainder of her 2021 Tour dates, stating that she needs to concentrate on rehabilitating her hip after her recent surgery. Tanya has also recorded a very cool song with RuPaul called “This Is Our Country,” which Kathleen recommends cranking UP and listening to. In super breaking bombshell news, Queen Stevie has delivered a TKO to former boyfriend and bandmate Lindsey Buckingham after his latest rant to the press challenging Stevie's involvement in his firing from Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham dissed all of his former bandmates in his tirades, which Kathleen advises is probably not the best way to approach a possible reunion. HIDDEN VALLEY HALLOWEEN: Kathleen is thrilled to read an announcement that Hidden Valley is releasing limited-edition Halloween treats for Ranch lovers, as well as a Ranch bottle costume. BALTO HOLMES AND MORE THERANOS TRIAL UNCERTAINTY: In another chapter of the saga of Elizabeth Holmes' lies, Kathleen reports to the Termites that in 2017, Vanity Fair reports that Holmes flew first-class across the U.S. to adopt a 9-week-old Siberian husky. She named him Balto after the world-famous sled dog that made a dangerous 600-mile journey in 1925, bearing medicine to save an entire village from diphtheria. Holmes went on to boast to people that Balto is a wolf, which his AKC paperwork states otherwise. Kathleen then goes into detail on the latest developments in the Theranos trial, including issues with jurors, the ways in which Holmes as altered her appearance to look more “maternal,” and the and exquisite home that she's residing in with her new baby and billionaire husband while on trial for fraud. RESURRECTING THE WOOLLY MAMMOTH: Kathleen reads an article outlining where scientists are making a pitch to resurrect the woolly mammoth from extinction. Colossal, a biosciences and genetics company, has raised $15 million to bring back the mammoth in an altered genetic form. The move could help restore the fragile Arctic tundra ecosystem, however, the ethical issues involved are creating a firestorm with the Genetics community. Kathleen asks listeners what they think of the campaign, and Paddles votes to proceed as long as the end result produces a mini mammoth (much like a baby goat). BITCOIN BECOMES LEGAL TENDER IN EL SALVADOR: As listeners of the Pubcast know, Kathleen holds mad love for cryptocurrency. She's thrilled to read an article announcing that El Salvador has adopted Bitcoin as an official currency alongside the US dollar. Supporters argue the move will make it cheaper and easier for migrants to send money home to El Salvador, which is important given such remittances account for over 24 percent of the country's gross domestic product, according to figures from the World Bank reported by CNBC. Baby steps for big gain states Mama T. RIPPER THE TALKING DUCK: Kathleen reads an article from New Zealand where a duck, who was raised in captivity in the late 1980s, was recorded uttering the phrase: “You bloody fool!” Scientists have analyzed the recordings, and have added musk ducks to a small number of animals able to imitate human speech.THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN THE USA: Kathleen is excited to announce that Money Magazine has evaluated big cities and small towns all over the US and has determined that the best place to live is Chanhassen, Minnesota. The magazine revealed its 35th annual "50 Best Places to Live" list last week, looking at metrics across nine different categories to create its definitive ranking for 2021-22. Situated southwest of the Twin Cities, Chanhassen made the #1 pick overall, with two additional cities in Minnesota making the top fifty as well. Skol!A $400B UTOPIAN DESERT CITY PLANNED: Kathleen reads an article where former Walmart president and billionaire Marc Lore has announced his plans for a $400 billion utopian city. Lore wants to capture the cleanliness of Tokyo, the diversity of New York, and the social services of Stockholm, and his vision will incorporate 5-million-people. He has appointed world-famous architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group to finalize the design and location, using scouting teams to review possible targets including Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Texas, and the Appalachian region. Stay tuned for UPDATES ☺THE CAROLINA MURDAUGH MURDERS: Kathleen's ID Channel love attracts her to the bizarre details surrounding the murder of the family of a South Carolina lawyer, Alex Murdaugh. News of the deaths of Paul Murdaugh, 22, and Maggie Murdaugh, 52, has led to national headlines, not only for the mystery surrounding their murders but for the ties to other death investigations in the Lowcountry area: Stephen Smith in 2015, Gloria Satterfield in 2018 and Mallory Beach in 2019. Kathleen reads through the timeline of events leading up to the recent arrest of Alex Murdaugh, after admitting to enlisting a hitman to end his own life in an effort to release an insurance policy for his remaining living son. Kathleen opens the show pouring a mimosa mixed with “Delta Airlines orange juice” (otherwise known as Minute Maid”) and Sophia Coppola’s canned Blanc de Blanc mini champagne, which Kathleen loves because it tastes delicious, comes in a pink can, and has a “bendy” straw. She describes to listeners a baby walking shoe that her friend and fellow comic Kelly MacFarland sent to her, and describes how if she were the burglar “Baby Show Madigan” she would sign baby shoes, insert cash in them, and leave them in poor neighborhoods. A QUEST FOR RANCH: “Do you have any Ranch?!” As her Termites know, Kathleen LOVES Ranch dressing, and in her hunt to find the most delicious Ranch available she takes her Termites to Dairy Queen to sample their house-made Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. She loves the tang and creaminess of the inhouse concoction, telling Termites to pair it with DQ’s chicken strips. “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food, Kathleen samples Cotton Candy Hostess Twinkies. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN’S QUEEN’S COURT: Kathleen follows up on Episode 27 by sampling Queen Dolly Parton’s new perfume “Scent From Above,” which she purchased after watching Dolly’s Super Bowl ad. She then tells Termites to vote for new queens to add to the Court. GOP KICKS MISSOURI LAWMAKER: Kathleen takes listeners back to her home state of Missouri, where a federal grand jury has indicted Tricia Derges on fraud charges last for falsely promoting a treatment she was selling at medical clinics as containing stem cells that could treat various diseases, including COVID-19. The Missouri GOP Party immediately voted and stripped Derges of all political power, removing her from all committee assignments. BITCOIN PAYS FOR MURDER-FOR-HIRE: Kathleen is awed at the stupidity surrounding an article investigating a murder-for-hire website in Wisconsin. The story led to the arrest of a woman who allegedly used bitcoin cryptocurrency in a failed plot to hire a hit man through the dark web. Kathleen raises her mimosa and announces “hold my beer, Wisconsin.” BITCOIN MINER WON’T REVEAL BITCOIN PASSWORD TO AUTHORITIES: Kathleen laughs at an article involving the arrest of a German man who was arrested for installing Bitcoin mining software on people’s computers. The cryptocurrency enthusiast obtained the passwords and stole Bitcoin, but after his arrest he refused to disclose the NEW password for the stolen Bitcoin so that it could be claimed by authorities and returned to the original owners. DOGECOIN (aka “Doggy Coin”): As listeners know, Kathleen is fascinated by all details surrounding the cryptocurrency market, and participates whole-heartedly through the purchase of Bitcoin and Ethereum. She’s thrilled at the recent rebirth of new crypto coin Dogecoin, and reads an article reviewing Elon Musk’s tweets and his support of Dogecoin, which causes the value of that specific Crypto to skyrocket 24% within a day. Referred to as “the people’s crypto” and supported by rocker Gene Simmons and rapper Snoop Dogg — sent trigger-happy Reddit traders stampeding into the canine-themed coin. As a result, Dogecoin eclipsed Bitcoin’s rise, causing the Reddit children to fully support the new currency. ANIMALS MOST LIKELY TO KILL YOU BY STATE: Kathleen continues with the segment Animals Most Likely to Kill You (By State), as reported by the Center for Disease Control. If you live in Montana beware of grizzly bears, as noted in Night of the Grizzlies, in Nebraska beware of “rogue” cattle, and in Nevada deer mice cause a high rate of fatalities. GENDER REVEAL PARTIES GONE WRONG: We’re all sick of Gender Reveal parties and the theatrics surrounding unborn baby genders, and Kathleen laughs while reading news about a 26-year-old Michigan man who was killed when a small cannon exploded in the back yard of a home near Flint. Evan Silva died after he was struck by shrapnel from the cannon, which was fired to "celebrate the baby's pending arrival.” When the cannon was fired by the father-to-be, the cannon blew up, spraying metal shrapnel across the yard that struck Silva, three vehicles and the garage. Kathleen provides her opinion on Millennials need to celebrate the sex of their pending births, and then discusses other notable Gender Reveal themes. FLYING CHINESE VOLKSWAGENS: As a follow up to Episode 23, Kathleen shares with listeners that Volkswagen will possibly manufacture flying vehicles in China, becoming the latest automaker to probe the possibilities of personal air travel. Volkswagen states that "vertical mobility" could be the next step after self-driving technology. Kathleen moves on to defend her support for flying cars, since she bought into the concept watching the Jetsons as a child and hates traffic on Missouri’s I-70. RECYCLED AIRPLANE WINE: Kathleen is a loyal Delta Airlines frequent flier, converted from American Airlines. She loves the energy of Delta’s employees. AND their onboard screwdrivers, and further maintains her decision to switch when reading an article about American Airlines forming a wine club to sell off the more expensive wine that was originally purchased to serve in their International and transcontinental US premium cabins. The subscription club, called American Airlines Flagship Cellars will give customers a chance to buy wine by the bottle or in custom "curated" cases, ranging in price from about $13 to $40. Kathleen laughs that purchases also contain American miles, which although seem like a bonus are the most difficult miles to redeem in her experience. IKEA PURCHASES GEORGIA FOREST: Kathleen reads an article that Swedish company Ikea has recently purchased 11,000 acres of forest in Georgia to protect it from mass development. NEW DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT FOUND IN WALES: Kathleen reads about the discovery of a well-preserved dinosaur footprint in Wales. The footprint is believed to be 220 million years old and had been preserved in mud.ALIENS AT HARVARD: Kathleen shares with listeners a recent article from a Harvard astronomer who argues that aliens have visited Earth, but the evidence was dismissed by scientists. Avi Loeb lays out the argument for the alien origins of an object sighted and tracked around our Sun. The vessel sped up and deviated from its expected trajectory, propelled by a mysterious force. All scientists related to the case had to come up with novel theories to dismiss extraterrestrial activity, such as that it was made of hydrogen ice and would therefore not have visible trails, or that the object disintegrated into a dust cloud.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen tells listeners to watch Trust on Hulu (supported by a crush she has on Donald Sutherland), about the Getty family and the abduction of J. Paul Getty III. She also recommends watching “Free Britney” about the adult emancipation of Britney Spears from her father. Kathleen admits that she never would have watched this documentary without extreme quarantine boredom and the endorsement of Ron White, but also recommends that everyone give it a watch (just don’t buy the matching mask ☺)MYSTERY OF THE WEEK: Kathleen reviews the mystery of notorious airline skyjacker DB Cooper, the unidentified man who hijacked a commercial flight between Portland and Seattle on November. 24, 1971. He extorted $200,000 in ransom and parachuted to an uncertain fate. Despite an extensive manhunt and protracted FBI investigation, the perpetrator has never been located or identified. It remains the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history. Kathleen goes on to reveal new details that the prime suspect in the case, Sheridan Peterson, has passed away at the age of 94.

If you ask a random reader to name foundational women horror writers, you might get two or three names. Mary Shelley. Shirley Jackson. Maybe Daphne du Maurier or Anne Rice. But as Lisa Kroger and Melanie R. Anderson point out in their new book, Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror & Speculative Fiction, if that's where our knowledge begins and ends, we're missing out on a lot. Eli Colter, who wrote, amongst other things, weird westerns. C.L. Moore who helped introduce swashbuckling rebels into the sci-fi canon. Angela Carter's re-imagining of folk tales. There are also works of literary fiction we might not put in the horror genre, like Toni Morrison's Beloved.    Kroger and Anderson give readers a primer on women writers whose work you may have missed, and puts it in a historical context. You can learn about the origins of the gothic story, the influence of spiritualism in writing and pop culture, how writers supported their families with their short works, a bit about pulp magazines like Weird Tales, and even how one writer put together a group of mystics (or mystic-adjacents) to help guard the coast of England during World War II. But beware – Monster, She Wrote is likely to add considerable height to your reading pile.    A note about the sound quality – we tried to do this interview with Skype, but it kept cutting out. So we had to do it the old fashioned way, the way I started recording interviews in the last century, on speaker phone with a recorder. I've sweetened it up a bit through some plug-in magic, but you'll notice the switch a few minutes in.   Monster, She Wrote is out now from Quirk Books and you can find out more about it at www.quirkbooks.com or wherever you get wonderful books. You can also keep track of Lisa Kroger's work at www.lisakroger.com and Melanie R. Anderson at www.melanieranderson.com. The Know Fear Podcast is at www.knowfearcast.com, and on Twitter under @knowfearcast.    This week's featured track from the new Best of Boston Stand-Up, Volume 1. Boston has a long and fine tradition of stand-up comedy, and this album is a good introduction to some of the funniest comedians you can see regularly around town. Veterans like Steve Sweeney, Don Gavin, Tony V., Kenny Rogerson, and Jimmy Dunn; more recent headliners like Kelly MacFarland, Will Noonan, Dan Crohn, Christine Hurley, and Corey Rodrigues, who you are about to hear.    This is a bit about Rodrigues going out for a day at the beach, and the reaction he got when he tried to put on sunscreen. I won't give away too much, but Rodrigues is black, and the audience at this taping was mostly white. That allowed Rodrigues to have a little fun with their expectations partway through the story. Look for more of Rodrigues's stuff on the Dry Bar Comedy YouTube channel, and find his album, My Turn, on Apple Music and Google Play. His Web site is www.coreyrodrigues.com.

Who doesn't love Kelly MacFarland? I've never met a person that doesn't. She emerged from the woods of Maine and made it all the way to Gotham Live and Last Comic Standing. One of the best things about watching Kelly is that she's always going to surprise you and this week she surprised me with a bomb that delighted me far more than the audiences of New England. Middle aged male cheerleaders, you're on warning.
