How to Fix the Broken U.N. Human Rights Council: A Conversation with Ambassador Kelly Craft

The United Nations Charter charges the organization with “promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all.” Sadly, the U.N. has often failed to fulfill this obligation. In particular, the Human Rights Council has demonstrated bias and ineptitude, too often manipulated by the world’s worst human rights abusers. The U.S. left the Council in 2018 after other governments failed to support much-needed reforms to prevent human rights abusers from joining and eliminate discrimination against Israel. It is a tall task to fix a body that, in the words of Amb. Craft, “is a haven for despots and dictators, hostile to Israel, and ineffectual on true human rights crises.” Please join us as Amb. Craft discusses lessons learned and offers suggestions for reforms that would help the Council live up to its purpose. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

So, we are hearing all of these scare tactics about US President Donald Trump, many of which are true, but elections are supposed to be about substantive change and progress. As we hear the name Michele Flournoy bandied about as the rumored front-runner for the position of secretary of defense if Democratic candidate Joe Biden wins the November presidential election, is there any sense that there will be change and progress, or is it all style over substance?"Jobless claims increased slightly to 870,000 last week from 866,000 a week earlier, according to Thursday's Labor Department report," the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. "The totals remain well above pre-pandemic peaks but are down significantly from nearly 7 million in March," the Journal added, also noting that "employer uncertainty about the economic recovery six months into the coronavirus pandemic continued to restrain hiring gains." What does the future hold?"China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, on Thursday fought back at US accusations against China over the handling of COVID-19" the Chinese state outlet Xinhua News Agency reported Friday. "At a summit-level debate on 'global governance after COVID-19,' the US permanent representative to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, repeated President Donald Trump's demand to hold China accountable for the spread of the virus. In response, Zhang said Thursday's meeting was a moment for solidarity and cooperation, as reflected by the appeals of the vast majority of Security Council members. 'Regrettably, we once again heard noises from the US that are so at odds with the atmosphere of the meeting. China resolutely opposes and rejects the baseless accusations by the US,' said Zhang." Is the US winning these arguments on any level?Friday is panel day, and our first panel is with Dr. Linwood Tauheed and Dr. Colin Campbell. "Senate Republicans were left dumbfounded Thursday by President Trump's latest self-engineered controversy, a suggestion there might not be a peaceful transition of power after Election Day, which left his GOP allies on Capitol Hill scrambling for political cover," The Hill reported Friday. What are we to make of this? For our final panel, we talk to David Lindorff and Dr. Gerald Horne about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' proposed bill that "would newly classify certain forms of protest as felonies and impose harsh penalties on some protesters," as reported Tuesday by Common Dreams.GuestsCaleb Maupin - Journalist and political analystDr. Jack Rasmus - Professor of economics at Saint Mary's College of CaliforniaKJ Noh - Peace activist, writer and teacherDr. Linwood Tauheed - Associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas CityDave Lindorff - JournalistDr. Gerald Horne - Professor of history at the University of Houston, author, historian and researcher

“Obviously, we wish it was earlier if China had been more forthcoming and transparent. But I think the important part is that we cannot allow any pandemic or any economic situation currently to cloud our moral responsibility for issues that are already on the ground.” Whether she's voting in the Security Council or leading the personnel at the U.S. Mission to the U.N. (USUN), Ambassador Kelly Craft is keenly aware of the national values she represents. For her, it's a matter of humility – as when she played an integral role in renegotiating the NAFTA framework with our neighbors to the north and south. “It was a matter of respect for each person's economy,” she tells Mike. “And when you respect each person's economy, Mexico and Canada, and the U S, you know that everybody can work together because it is about a supply chain, and you're only as strong as your weakest link. So, it was really important that this trilateral deal was very strong unilaterally for each country.”

Donald Trump's pick to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations is unlike any other previous nominee for the US-UN role. Kelly Knight Craft currently serves as the US Ambassador to Canada, a position she was conferred for the fact that her family are billionaire Republican donors. Her family owns a major coal company with deep roots in Kentucky.  It is not at all unusual at all for Democratic or Republican administrations to reward major donors with plum ambassador roles. For better or worse that is part of US diplomatic tradition. But this is the first time that the UN ambassadorship is going to a major donor. This sets up some interesting political dynamics that were on display during Ambassador Kelly Craft's confirmation hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week.  On the line with me to discuss how Kelly Craft may fit in the role of UN Ambassador is Richard Gowan. He is the UN director for the International Crisis Group and recently wrote a piece in Politico examining some of the key debates and diplomatic dynamics that the next US Ambassador may face Coming into this job, Kelly Craft did not have much a foreign policy profile, particularly on issues relevant to the UN. This conversation provides a useful introduction to her and the issues into which she'll be thrust. Get a Premium Subscription Support the Show. This week our ‘Three Lessons Learnt’ podcast featured Brandon from the Craft CMS team. Brandon is the founder and CEO of Pixel and Tonic who created the content managing system titled Craft CMS. This system aids web agencies in building websites that their clients are then able to content manage going forwards. If you haven’t yet listened to the podcast, here’s a summary of Brandon’s three lessons that he learnt when starting up his own business: Don’t take your existing customers for granted. Brandon has learnt from his own mistakes in this, having lost half of their sales after a few months of announcing their new, competitive product. He says not to take your current situation for granted as clients are always capable of moving onto something new. His advice to avoid this is to stay professional, keep delivering what customers are looking for, and treat them with respect. Be transparent with your community. After seeing how their competitors were treating their communities, Brandon decided to learn from their mistakes. The team aim to be as transparent as possible whilst keeping future plans somewhat close to their chest as to keep some elements a surprise. Brandon suggests trying to keep things open to the public and being honest; particularly on a personal level. Being honest when people write into the company is key to being transparent. It is important to give your team members a voice. Brandon says that no matter what your team are talking about, give them room for their opinions. Often they are seeing things from a different perspective to you and you may be overlooking something. Trust that you have hired smart people and that they have smart opinions to voice. Respect your team and give them all a fair stake at the table. It was great to have Brandon on this week's podcast.
