Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer Buck Johnson is the keyboardist and backing vocalist for the legendary rock band Aerosmith, the Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry), and The Joe Perry Project. Buck hails from the backroads of Shady Grove, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, where he grew up singing gospel throughout the South with his musical family. Since beginning his career, the soulful rock artist has amplified his musical talent by performing in churches, bars, festivals, and concert halls globally alongside icons like Aerosmith, Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper. As a songwriter, Buck co-wrote the international hit single for Carlos Santana, "Just Feel Better," for his 2005 album All That I Am, featuring Steven Tyler. After moving to Nashville in 2006, Buck joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls, releasing their self-titled album in 2007 and earning two Country Top 40 hit singles, "Last Train Running" and "Falling Into You." Buck credits his Alabama roots and his many years of living in California for his soulful rock Cala-Bama sound. Buck has also had numerous songs featured on television and in films as a songwriter, composer, producer, and performer, including the song "You Came Along" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus on vocals for the Lifetime movie Flying By, “Working Man” by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Extreme Makeover-Home Edition, and "Fast Talking Lover" by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Nashville. Continuing to expand his songwriting and musicianship, Buck produced and co-wrote Kaitlyn Kohler's single "I'm Not Crying," which recently went No. 1 at Texas Country radio. Buck has also recorded and/or toured with such notable acts as The Doobie Brothers (“Rockin' Down The Highway” live album), Tal Bachman (hit single “She's So High”), Jon McLaughlan (hit single “Beautiful Disaster”), John Waite, Chris Stills, Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), and more. He has also worked as a songwriting collaborator, session vocalist, and musician with songwriters and producers Jamie Houston (High School Musical, Carlos Santana), Charlie Midnight (The Doobie Brothers), and Bob Rock (Tal Bachman). Buck's latest works feature various iconic artists, including his self-produced rock ‘n' roll album, mixed by Chad Carlson (Taylor Swift, Blues Traveler, Chris Isaak, Trisha Yearwood); engineered by Tim Brennan (Steven Tyler, Chris Daughtry, Jason Mraz); Nick Buda on drums (Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney); on guitar, Rob McNelley (Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood); Luis Maldonado (Train, Foreigner); and Geoff Pearlman (Linda Perry, Rikki Lee Jones, Jakob Dylan); and Ted Pecchio on bass (Doyle Bramhall II, Derek Trucks Band). The album features notable lead guitarists Damon Johnson (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), and the songwriting team of Buck and Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Joe Cocker, and Joni Mitchell). Super excited to announce new guest, Ben Brandt, to The Story! One could say Ben Brandt was born with a guitar in his hands and this would not be far from the truth. The son of a professional musician, Ben cannot remember a time when the guitar was not a part of his life. As a baby he was fascinated by the instrument and by the time he was three he was picking out riffs on his father's guitars. In 1999, at the age of 10, Ben started his own band, the Ben “Jamin” Brandt Project and his talents were discovered by a local radio station in NJ, WDHA. They promoted his music and booked him at festivals where he shared the stage with the likes of Savoy Brown and Billy Hector. In 2010 Ben moved to Harrisburg, PA and started the Ben Brandt Trio in which he was both vocalist and lead guitarist. They played throughout the PA/MD/DC/VA region where they quickly gained a wide fan base in the Blues/Rock scene. Over the years Ben and his band have had the opportunity to open for a number of well known acts such as Jimmy Thackery, Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Hoey, Coco Montoya, The Record Company, etc. He has also been called to the stage to sit in with notable guitarists such as Davy Knowles, Artur Menezes and Albert Castiglia. Ben also is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Blues Society (BSPA) and frequently performs at their weekly jam sessions. In 2019 Ben teamed up with singer/songwriter Kevin Koa and formed the Soul Miners Union, a roots and blues based project that featured original songs with great grooves and catchy lyrics. Their debut album was recorded and produced by legendary guitarist/producer Josh Smith at his Flat V studio in Los Angeles. The album was released in September 2020. Blues Rock Review wrote, “Brandt brings a gritty, seasoned approach to the songs he captains.” At times Ben provides “crisp licks and understated solos” whereas other songs allow Ben “the space to stretch out and cut into some aggressive playing” with “riff driven rhythm and ominous lyrics.” The album contained “deft playing, seamless transitions and memorable choruses” and was a “fresh take on a few different blues areas.”Ben's influences over the years have included a very eclectic mix of Blues, Prog and Rock from Chris Cain, Gary Moore and Eric Johnson to Andy Timmons, Robin Trower, Steve Vai and Alex Lifeson. These different genres and playing styles provide Ben with a broad palette to pull from to hone his craft. Dynamics and phrasing are key components in Ben's playing where every note has meaning and purpose, and his impeccable tone is sought after by guitarists both young and old.Ben's skills are well known in Harrisburg, PA and the surrounding tri-state area where he continues to perform on a regular basis. Ben is not one to be put in a box and always strives to learn new things, pushing himself and the musicians he plays with. At 32 years of age and over 20 years of playing live Ben has acquired a lot of experience yet he has truly only begun to show the world what he is capable of.You can find Ben and his projects here:Website: https://www.soulminersunion.com/newsSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ezvhPd5zaWyKCWFWAjPSYFacebook: Ben Brandt & the Soul Miners UnionSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

SOON I'M GONNA MAKE THIS A SEPARATE PODCAST FEED AS I ROLL OUT THE LAST YEAR OF RADIO I DID. Day 6 - Chris Distefano, Rich Cos and live music from Doyle Bramhall II I now cherish the last year of radio I did especially with the passing of my dear friends Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. I was able to come to the realization why I went into radio all those years ago. It was for the fun and pure joy of it. The last year was filled with ugliness, drama and a ton of laughter. Me, Carl Ruiz, Vic Henley and Sherrod Small had the time of our lives on and off the radio show. Our close friendships was on full display. The last year also saw Carl Ruiz blossom into a superstar which led me to do the Opie Radio podcast with him. A special thanks to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul and Louis for going on this ride with us. This week, we place a call into Woodstock, NY, where we speak to a respected singer, songwriter, sometimes drummer and beloved daughter of Levon Helm of The Band: Amy Helm. Growing up in the home of two working performers (her mother is singer Libby Titus, who wrote songs covered by Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt) wasn't always the easiest for the introspective Helm, but it gave her a fertile proving ground to begin her exploration in creating her own soaring songs in the folk, blues and soul traditions. She waited until she was forty-four to release her acclaimed first solo record Didn't It Rain, with her father lending his signature earthy drums on several tracks – and this year, she teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer Josh Kaufman (Taylor Swift, Bonny Light Horseman) to create What The Flood Leaves Behind, her most emotive and lushly-realized project yet. With her dogs often joining the conversation from her upstate home, Amy dives into her early years trying her hand at singing in New York City cafes, having folks walk out of her folk fest shows because her band was too loud, founding the band Ollabelle, joining her stepdad Donald Fagen's group Steely Dan onstage, backing up legends like Stax soul artist William Bell and finally reconnecting with her dad in her mid-thirties as he began his late life renaissance, hosting his epic Americana throwdowns called “The Midnight Rambles.” It was being a member of that crack “ramble band” that gave Amy the final push to pursue her own lead voice. While Levon famously struggled with heroine addiction and the foibles of post-Bob Dylan and The Band fame fallout, it was when he got clean and took Amy under his wing that both of their stars began to rise again. You can hear Amy singing on his gorgeous return in 2017's Dirt Farmer. Becoming more ambitious, Amy laid down her upbeat rock-n-soul-tinged second album with producer Joe Henry in LA with notable players like Doyle Bramhall II, Tyler Chester, and a vocal choir of Allison Russell, JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and Adam Minkoff. This Too Shall Light was released in 2018 on Yep Roc Records and Amy began to be recognized as one of the most powerful singers touring the Americana circuit. Her newest record was recorded at her spiritual home, Levon Helm Studios, where each ramble still takes place on the weekends. During the pandemic, Helm had a unique idea to keep her creative muscles strong, even when live music gatherings were not technically allowed in public. She began setting up “curbside concerts” for her friends and any curious fans who missed her songs, touring around Woodstock with her guitar, bringing a little joy to her shut-in listeners during New York's darkest hours. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear her introduce the spiritual opening track of What The Flood Leaves Behind, “Verse 23.”

This episode we have The London Souls singer guitarist Tash Neal on to talk about his new solo project and his new single “Something Ain't Right “ . We also talk about his favorite strain, his legendary sit ins with Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bob Weir,Keb Mo & Billy Gibbons also stories from Lenny Kravitz and Gary Clark Jr tour. We also talk about his guitar solo technique and whether to hold back on a solo or let it rip. There's a lot of breaking news about his solo album release, new London Souls & Austin City Limits with Doyle Bramhall II. “Something Ain't Right” is as forthright musically as it is lyrically, setting Neal's impassioned vocal against a backdrop of agitated guitars, fusion-funk bass and fevered percussion, all of it punctuated by squiggly synths, sweeping orchestration and even the sound of gunshots. If it sounds overwhelming, that was kind of the point. “I wanted it to be as fun and exciting as possible, because I was like, ‘I'm not going to play a fucking slow song—that's not resistance,' ” Neal says. “The key to blackness and why we're still here is because we still maintain joy through the pain. We can still kick a groove after being dehumanized. We don't need to be sad. We can fight.” Neal will prepare to release his debut solo album in 2021. For more info

We’ve had so many talented people on the show since we began in January 2017, but few have had the recording, producing and touring career Doyle Brahmill the Second has had. Since he arrived on the scene back in 1992 with the Arc Angels, Doyle’s discography looks like an exhibit at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Thats no coincidence either given his lineage but make no mistake about it, he is an extremely talented guitar player, singer, songwriter and as you’ll soon here a hell of a guy. His new album Shades comes out out October 5th, and aside from standout performances of his own, he is joined on the record by Eric Clapton, Norah Jones and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. We were absolutely thrilled to catch up with Doyle to talk about the new record, and the conversation took so many fun twists and turns. Shades like his previous solo records is an absolute gem, one I recommend you check out when its out October 5th. For more on Doyle visit db2music.com. He shared a great story about working with Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, and how this went down… knowing who he is (and who he’s not)... speeding, race cars, and oddly enough, romantic comedies… his “super powers”... studying with Robert Fripp, dying before he was even born, and more. This week we welcome one of our favorite guests, Lee Falco, back to the show as third mic. Lee was in Atlanta for a performance with guitarist, Doyle Bramhall II and was gracious enough to sit down with us before he hit the road. Make sure you say hello to Lee if you see him at a show in your city. To learn more about Lee and see where he'll be appearing please visit his web site: https://leefalco.com/ In this episode we take on the ultra subjective topic of feel. What does it mean to you? What do you listen for to determine what feels right? We start the show discussing what makes our favorite drummers playing feel so good. We also discuss that sometimes drummers that play on top of the beat to create energy and recklessness create a certain type of vibe that just as cool as their laid back counterparts. When discussing feel the subject of playing behind, center, or ahead of the beat is good place to start. The relationship of the snare to the bass drum is crucial as well as the response of the other musicians that you're playing with. The topic of ghost notes comes up and how they affect feel as a timing and dynamic device. We then talk about how you can practice manipulating the beat by recording yourself and viewing the transients on your digital audio workstation. Tuning can also affect feel. We talk about how the sound and response from loosely tuned, highly muffled drums have a tendency to feel more laid back than a snare or bass drum with a sharp, highly pitched crack. Touch is also debated. We talk about how great feel is present in all types of drummers. Heavy hitters like John Bonham and Stewart Copeland are contrasted with lighter players such as James Gadson and Bernard Purdie. Finally we finish up with practice tips and recommendations for listening and study. Join us every Monday for a brand new episode. Formed after the untimely death of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Arc Angels pick-up the Texas blues-rock torch on their 1992 self-titled release.

Logos, posters, album covers, these are just a few of the items that leave an indelible mark on us; visually imprinting the look or vibe of a favorite band, book, or movie. Phil Yarnall, accomplished designer, and Tyler School of Art graduate, is the artist behind many such memorable creations. Not afraid to get his hands dirty and dig into the work, Phil has created incredible imagery for the Jimi Hendrix estate, Doyle Bramhall II, Rich Robinson, The Magpie Salute, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Janis Joplin, Ten Ton Mojo, and many others. When he's not creating iconic images he can be found working as a roadie for his son's band, Gilbert.
The second holiday edition of The Roadhouse for 2016 keeps the spirit rolling. I've also got quite of bit of new music to round out the hour, including Big Bill Morganfield, Mike Zito, Jim Suhler, Annika Chambers, and Doyle Bramhall II. Holiday blues and new releases will help keep us moving along. As always, they also help to make sure we roll another hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 625th Roadhouse.

Black-Eyed News: The first story up this week is that the Clapton Crossroads show from a few months ago will be coming to a theater near you.On August 13th in theatres across the country there will be a special one night only event broadcasting highlights and backstage footage from this pasts Aprils CrossRoads Guitar Festival. Musicians featured in the cinema event include Allman Brothers Band, Blake Mills, Booker T., Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Clapton, Gary Clark Jr., Gregg Allman, Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Keith Richards, Keith Urban, Los Lobos, Robert Cray, Sonny Landreth, Vince Gill and Warren Haynes. It will be shown in nearly 500 select theatres around the country, and to see where and to buy tickets head to www.fathomevents.com. We went to the theater event last year and it was awesome you almost feel like you’re there. Blues Blast magazine has had 2 great interviews in the last 2 weeks. The first one was with frontman for the Fabulous Thunderbirds Kim Wilson. It talks about the T-Birds new record and how he has gone from being influenced by the greats to becoming influential on the careers of a new crop of performers and the first time that he met Muddy Waters. It is a great interview. I will leave the link in this week’s write up. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast7_18_13.htm The second interview is with the legendary James Cotton. Though a bout with throat cancer and the ensuing loss of a vocal cord back in the mid-90s has left Cotton unable to do much singing, the Grammy Award winner and Blues Hall of Famer has steadfastly refused to allow that malady stop him from blowing the harp with as much power and gusto as he ever has. “I was a harmonica player before I was a singer. I didn’t really become a singer until I started fronting a band,” he said. “So, that (his health) has kind of made me be able to concentrate on playing the harmonica again. It kind of put me back on track.” Cotton’s health issues have also not put the brakes on his recording career, either. He just requires a little more help in the studio these days. And when you’ve got friends like Gregg Allman, Keb Mo, Warren Haynes, Delbert McClinton, Darrell Nulisch, Joe Bonamassa and Ruthie Foster to call on, well, you’ve got it made. You should read the entire interview and pick up a copy of Cotton Mouth Man on Alligator records. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast8_1_13.htm Lastly; The self-proclaimed ‘Boss of the Blues,’ James Lewis Carter ‘T-Model’ Ford, passed away from respiratory failure July 16 in his Greenville, Mississippi home. Depending on which account you believe, T-Model was somewhere between 89-93 years old (editor’s note: He told Blues Blast in an interview from Feb. 14 of this year that he was 92 years old). T-Model was the very embodiment of the blues and spent a couple of years on a chain gang for murder as a young man. He also claimed to have been married six times and fathered over 20 children. With his unique style of guitar playing – chopping off chords that were very reminiscent of a bell chiming – T-Model paired with R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough to help bring the Fat Possum Records label to national attention with four classic albums for the Oxford, Mississippi-based label. T-Model is survived by his wife Estella and grandson (and drummer) Stud. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast8_1_13.htm BLUES IN THE AREA:8/7 WEDNESDAY CHRISTINE OHLMAN & REBEL MONTEZ - WESTERLY TOWN BEACH (6-8PM) - WESTERLY, RI DAN STEVENS - THE OLD LYME INN (6 PM, WEATHER PERMITTING) - OLD LYME, CT THE CHRIS D'AMATO BAND - THE HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY (NOON-1PM, 500 MAIN ST.) - HARTFORD THE TRAVIS MOODY BAND - BLUES, BERRIES & JAM FARMERS MARKET ON THE GREEN (NOON-1:30PM) - NEW HAVEN, CT BLUES JAM W/BRANDT TAYLOR - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (8 PM) - HARTFORD 8/8 THURSDAY TOMMY CASTRO - CHAN'S - WOONSOCKET, RI ANA POPOVIC - STEARNS SQUARE (WORTHINGTON ST.) - SPRINGFIELD, MA SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (8 PM) - HARTFORD ERIN HARPE & THE DELTA SWINGERS - THEODORES' - SPRINGFIELD, MA DAN STEVENS - THE CONNECTICUT RIVER MUSEUM (5:30 PM) - ESSEX, CT BRANDT TAYLOR - THE SPRING HOUSE - BLOCK ISLAND, RI 8/9 FRIDAY TOMMY CASTRO - THE KNICKERBOCKER CAFE (8PM) - WESTERLY, RI JOHNNY RAWLS - CHAN'S (8PM) - WOONSOCKET, RI RICK ESTRIN & THE NIGHTCATS - THE OUTER SPACE (8PM) - HAMDEN, CT DAN STEVENS - THE CAPTAIN DANIEL PACKER INN - MYSTIC, CT THE WALTER LEWIS BLUES TRIO - THE LAKEHOUSE (7PM) - SEYMOUR, CT ERAN TROY DANNER (ACOUSTIC) - THEODORES' (9PM) - SPRINGFIELD, MA BRANDT TAYLOR - THE CANOE CLUB (9PM) - MIDDLETOWN, CT 8/10 SATURDAY STAFFORD SPRINGS BLUES FESTIVAL - HYDE PARK & THE PALACE THEATER - STAFFORD SPRINGS, CT HYDE PARK LINEUP (STARTS AT NOON): JAMES MONTGOMERY EASY BABY JUNIOR KRAUSS & THE SHAKES JOHNNY CHARLES & 706 UNION BAND JOSH SCUSSEL & THE RUDE BLUES BAND 13TH STEP DAN STEVENS Palace Theater lineup (starts 7:15 pm): AJ JANSEN CHRISTINE OHLMAN & REBEL MONTEZ George Thorogood / Buddy Guy - MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods (8pm) - Mashantucket, CT JOHNNY A. & JEFF PITCHELL - BRIDGE STREET LIVE (9PM) - COLLINSVILLE, CT THE RICH BADOWSKI BLUES BAND - SAM THE CLAM'S - SOUTHINGTON, CT RIVER CITY SLIM & THE ZYDECO HOGS - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (9PM) - HARTFORD KING CAKE - THE LEBANON FAIRGROUNDS (3PM) - LEBANON, CT BRANDT TAYLOR - T.J.
