(The Center Square) – Spokane opened a new medical respite facility on Monday as part of its scattered-site homeless model, sparking support and criticisms from the city council around its sudden arrival. The Lilac City started leveraging the model in October as it decommissioned the Trent Resource and Assistance Center. The Trent Shelter once housed hundreds of individuals, but its closure left many without a roof overhead as temperatures dropped and the new model lagged. After telling some stories about hanging out at Pride, attending the annual Lilac City Comic Con and almost getting "Hansel and Gretel'ed", this vertiginous duo break down the Mad Max Saga, including a 4 issue tie-in to Fury Road that Vertigo released in 2015. With a story by George Miller and writing credited to Mark Sexton (who also oversaw most of the art) and Nico Lathouris, this hard-to-find series fleshes out the world of Max, Furiousa, Immortan Joe and the like. Fun fact: It's actually up to about $300 on eBay right now! Happy hunting!

Get ready for an electrifying episode of Spokast! Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to the incredible talent of Topp, a hip-hop artist and producer from Spokane, WA. So, how did our paths cross with Topp? He was interviewed on Exzac Change's podcast Happy 2B Here in April, and we reconnected at Hip-Hop's Farewell to Lucky You in August. His track "On My Life" featuring Abhi the Nomad and The Boy Beerus has been on heavy rotation on my playlists for quite some time now – if you haven't heard it yet, you're in for a treat! What did we dive into during this episode? From his beginnings as a young hip-hop artist, producer, and DJ in the Tri-Cities to his journey that led him to the Lilac City. These competing newspapers merged in 1893 and took the name The Spokane Review. The Spokesman-Review was renamed by publisher and sole owner William Hutchinson Cowles in 1894. For more than five decades, Cowles would continue to serve as the paper's publisher and grow it into the Lilac City's preeminent daily. This special episode looks back at the first episode of The History of the Evergreen State Podcast, The Washington Fire Storm of 1889. This also marks the start of a continued revisit of that first episode, with the other two fires being covered throughout this summer.Spokane Falls was one of the largest and most prosperous communities in the territory of Washington when it became a state in 1889. Spokane Falls was a bustling young city with a prosperous elite, two newspapers, and a burgeoning downtown, attracting wealthy businessmen with stakes in the surrounding Idaho mines. The transition from an old trade post to a new contemporary metropolis was marked by the rapid replacement of old wooden structures with more permanent stone and brick structures. Wood frame buildings, however, considerably outnumbered stone and mortar constructions in many towns at the turn of the century. And, as we all know, wood burns incredibly well. For the Pacific Northwest, 1889 was a year of terrible wildfire. That year, fires ravaged Seattle, Ellensburg, Cheney, and the neighboring Coeur d'Alene forest. Spokane wasn't spared. A modest lodging house and restaurant on Railroad Avenue caught fire on the evening of August 4, 1889. Early attempts to put out the fire proved to be challenging. Firefighters from the local volunteer fire department rushed to put out the fire as quickly as they could, but their hoses lacked sufficient pressure. According to all accounts, panic set in when the extreme heat and shifting winds caused the flames to jump from the timber buildings to the adjoining stone and mortar structures.Listen now to learn more about this blaze that helped to transform the Lilac City!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!
Spokane's most well-known gambling entrepreneur was Jacob "Dutch Jake" Goetz, who flourished throughout the city's tumultuous early decades. German by birth, he arrived in the Pacific Northwest in 1875 and quickly created a network of tent hotels, cafes, and saloons between railroad construction camps and mining towns. During the 1885 gold rush in Idaho, he and his business partner Harry Baer amassed a fortune through their ownership of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mines. Using a portion of his share, Goetz was able to invite every miner in the district to his wedding, which was a legendary affair that included explosives and champagne. Goetz and Baer invested the remainder of their funds in the construction of a sophisticated restaurant-saloon-casino in Spokane. It would be destroyed in the Great Fire of Spokane in 1889 (covered waaay back in episode 1, and will soon be revisited for episode 50.) Several days later, they had set up a massive tent enterprise known as Dutch Jake's Beer Garden, which drew anywhere from 600 to 1,000 men per night. In 1894, Goetz and Baer constructed the Coeur d'Alene Hotel and Variety Theater in Spokane, which was one of the largest gambling and drinking facilities in the entire Pacific Northwest at the time of its construction. Going against the tide of anti-prohibition opinion, Goetz transformed it into the luxurious Hotel Coeur d'Alene in 1910, complete with a facsimile of a steamer on the roof.Listen now learn more about this fascinating character in the history of the Lilac City!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

Discover the brewing history of the Lilac City! The center of Eastern Washington, Spokane was founded in 1873 and named after the local tribe in the area. Breweries came soon after because of the great wealth of usable water in the form of Spokane Brewing Company, Inland Brewing Company, and Schade Brewery. After Prohibition, local beer continued to be created with regional conglomerates - Bohemian Breweries and Sick Brewery Enterprises - coming to town. Today, the city boasts one of the strongest craft beer scenes in all of the Pacific Northwest! Suggested beers when visiting: Garbage Pale Ale (Iron Goat), Sun Child IPA (Little Spokane), and Santa's Snack Imperial Oreo Stout (For the Love of God). Each episode we'll chat with a local influencer about what they're working on.
Comedians/improvisers/funny dudes Vik Pandya and Tyler Fowler of the Team Us Comedy join me for tacos at Alba's Restaurant (1825 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622). During this Boost Mobile-sponsored episode, we talk about: Criteria for a good taco: "All tacos are the same, until they're not." My ability to spot Vik and Tyler from afar: "Two shady looking-fellas; must be comics." The Team Us Comedy special: "Friends with 401(K) Benefits." Corporate jargon: We throw it up against the wall to see what sticks. It's a robust chat. Tyler's rough upbringing on the mean streets of the Lilac City of Lombard, IL. The Alba's food: Not quite what friend-of-Car-Con-Carne Mike Gebert experienced. "I'm looking at this taco... I have no idea what it is." Food review: "It's food." Tyler gave up veganism to eat Alba's food. How does Team Us membership work? Is it like the Justice League? Vik's style of comedy, and the buttons he pushes. Is being a comic more risky these days? Is the Chicago scene supportive? Encouraging work douchebags to take new opportunities. See Team Us live! Go to TeamUsComedy.com!
Lincoln Achieves Redelivery, Spokane Navy Week to Kick off in the Lilac City
First we recorded the beaver story, then we recorded the octopus story because the other was too short. So you get two, two, two amazing tales of Pacific Northwest critters! I put a little music in the middle, don't turn it off too early. Winning hearts and minds; why it's the Lilac City; Geronimo the polygamist beaver; how to get extra credit in Liz's class; an octopus story from Devon; fictional schools; Icelandic horse information; alien abductions as aquarium stocking technique.
