Jazz vocalist Olivia Van Goor says one of the best pieces of advice she's ever received is, “In the beginning, no one will be asking you to do things, so you just have to do them yourself.” Previously, she was under the impression that she needed to be asked to do things like record, or maybe she would just get a lucky break. This piece of advice gave Olivia the motivation to save up money for studio time, form her own jazz group, experiment with arrangements, line up a recording engineer and a mixing and mastering engineer — and this was just the start. Working as an independent artist isn't easy, but Olivia knows she's earned every ounce of praise the album has received. You hear Olivia's original imprint most on her arrangement of “Hershey Bar.” She was inspired by Anita O'Day's recording on the album Cool Heat — and her own sweet tooth. Musicians have a rap for vices like drugs and alcohol. But the only substance Olivia can't get enough of is chocolate. She says the obsession has toned down a bit over the years, but she still carries some with her at all times. It's become a running joke at jam sessions. Someone will ask, “Hey, you got some chocolate?” and she immediately starts passing it around. Olivia is the first musician to put lyrics to the tune of “Hershey Bar,” and she says they came pretty easily. The lyrics compare the sweetness of chocolate to the sweetness of love. Another standout tune on the album is Oliva's recording of “Lilac Wine.” The song is originally from a failed Broadway musical, but a recorded version by Nina Simone captured Olivia's attention. While the Broadway interpretation was a quite literal translation of the lyrics, Nina's version hinted at a deeper, darker meaning. A few weeks before the recording date, Olivia realized that she needed to find her own deeper meaning to the song. She practiced an exercise from Jazzmeia Horn's book Strive From Within: The Jazzmeia Horn Approach. She read the lyrics like a monologue, recording herself until the meaning of the song seeped into the words and she uncovered her own personal story hidden in the lyrics. Olivia says she can hear herself getting emotional when she listens back to that recording. She carries that story into the music whenever she performs. DM7-DOMINATRIX @ DJ Andrey Golubev P.S. Power's ‘Metal Heart', Young's ‘A Man Needs a Maid', Harvey's ‘The Desperate Kingdom of Love', Gene Clark's ‘Where My Love Lies Asleep', Dylan's ‘Not Dark Yet' и Mark Lanegan‘s ‘Dark Religion'.. ‘Imposter' tracklist: 01. ‘The Dark End Of The Street' 02. ‘Strange Religion' 03. ‘Lilac Wine' 04. ‘I Held My Baby Last Night' 05. ‘A Man Needs A Maid' 06. ‘Metal Heart' 07. ‘Shut Me Down' 08. ‘Where My Love Lies Asleep' 09. ‘Smile' 10. ‘The Desperate Kingdom Of Love' 11. ‘Not Dark Yet' 12. ‘Always On My Mind' Первая песня с альбома, "Metal Heart", выходит в эту пятницу (8 октября). До этого "The Light The Dead See" был выпущен в 2012 году под лейблом Soulsavers (с участием Дейва Гаана). #davegahan #soulservers #newalbum #newsingle #imposter

In this episode of Weird Studies, an improvised analysis of two pop songs -- Nina Simone's version of James Shelton's "Lilac Wine" and Ghostface Killah's visionary "Underwater" -- becomes the occasion for a deep dive to the weird wellspring of artistic creation. In trying to understand these songs and why they love them so much, your hosts touch on themes such as necromancy, decadence, liebestod, visionary experience, the Muslim image of paradise, the necessity of rifts, Norman Mailer's concept of "dream life," and the magical operation that is sampling. It was a proud moment for the Major Scale to have the chance to speak with Karl Berger. Active since the 1960s, Berger has forged a career as a composer and vibist with an ear for talent, arranging, and bringing a sense of melody and groove to the avant-garde. Taking a cue from his first encounter with Don Cherry, jazz's legendary gypsy traveller and inventor of World Beat. Berger has recorded under his own leadership with luminaries like Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman, and Lee Konitz – as well being tapped to enrich the music of Jeff Buckley, Natalie Merchant, and even Britney Spears! The Da Capo Trio are an unsigned group with an amazing and fresh take on one of the basics: the jazz trio. Drums, bass, and the Fender Rhodes piano sound get a 21st century treatment with dazzling virtuosity and accessibility. With their set of originals, standards (Oleo), and surprising arrangements (Pat Matheny), classic jazz jargon says it best here with the Da Capo Trio "so far out, that they're in." SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magentic Records). FIRST HALF: Symphony for Improvisers (Excerpt) by Don Cherry (from the album "Symphony for Improvisers" on Blue Note Records) Excerpt from UCF workshop by Karl Berger Movement 5 by Karl Berger (from the album "Gently Unfamiliar" on Tzadik records). ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar.
