Britain is facing a winter of discontent after 100,000 civil servants voted to strike today as comrades on the rail network agreed new dates and nurses decided on taking industrial action for the first time in more than a century. Salto de Castro, found in north-western Spain, has 44 homes, a hotel, a church and a swimming pool has been put up for sale by the current owner. The village is built over 65,000 square feet along the hilltops in the province of Zamora, near Spain's border with Portugal. But despite its picturesque location, Salto de Castro is home to no inhabitants, and has been abandoned for more than three decades. Morocco announced on Friday, November 4, that it had appointed a new person to oversee the public company that is in charge of the project to construct a 40km tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar to link the north African county to Spain. During the Moroccan government council meeting held on Thursday 3, it was decided to appoint AbdelKabir Zahoud. Spain briefly closed parts of its airspace over risks posed by a Chinese rocket re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Barcelona and Ibiza airports were among those impacted by the grounding, which lasted around 40 minutes on Friday. The decision came after China sent its powerful Long March 5B rocket to deliver the final module of its Tiangong space station. Greta Thunberg believes it is time for her to 'give up the megaphone' on climate change issues - but called for more 'civil disobedience' as eco-protests sweep Europe. The teenage activist, 19, wants to step out of the limelight to make room for people who are actually suffering the effects of climate change, four years after starting her world-famous 'school strike for climate' movement Four people were killed, including a teenager, and eight others were injured early on Sunday after a car rammed into members of a wedding party near Madrid following a brawl, police said. The fight erupted at dawn outside a restaurant that was hosting the wedding in Torrejón de Ardoz, some 25 kilometres northeast of Madrid. The new regulations, which introduced fines for both, produced the desired effect and while prostitution continues, it is hidden from view. Fewer homeless are now seen sleeping in the city centre and many have moved on to neighbouring Elche. It incorporates the wisdom, dedication and hard work of numerous scientists, engineers and technicians, according to the China Academy of Space Technology, which was responsible for designing and making the craft. The vehicle consists of three major parts-a crew working compartment, an airlock cabin and an unpressurized service module. Weighing 23 metric tons, the space lab is 17.9 meters tall, roughlyequivalentto a six-story residential building, and has a diameter of 4.2 meters. It is the largest and heaviest spacecraft China has ever built and also the world's heaviest self-propelled spaceship in service, said Zhang Qiao, head designer of Wentian's overall structure. The flexible solar panels of the lab are the largest of their kind in China. When fully unfolded, they are more than 55 meters long and have a combined area of nearly 280 square meters. After Wentian is connected to the Tianhe module, its airlock cabin will replace the one on Tianhe to become the main place for astronauts to put on their spacewalk suits and move out of the space station."Its inner space is bigger than that of the airlock cabin on the core module while its hatch is wider, making it easier for astronauts to make preparations and carry out spacewalks," Zhang said. Inside the gigantic lab, there are eight scientific cabinets. They will mainly be used for biological and life science studies and can support research on the growth, aging and genetic traits of plants, animals and microbes in the environment of space, he said. Outside the airlock cabin, there are 22 extravehicular payload adapters capable of carrying scientific equipment needed for experiments that require exposure to the space environment, cosmic rays, vacuumand solar winds, Zhang added. In addition to its scientific functions, Wentian also serves as a backup control station to the Tianhe core module in case of emergencies or malfunctions. It has all the same flight-control devices as those inside the core module to operate the entire Tiangong station," Zhang said.“除了科学实验,问天实验舱还可以作为天和核心舱的备用控制站,以应对紧急情况或故障。 The designer added that the craft also has three separate sleeping quarters and an independent section for personal hygiene. They can be used in emergencies orhandoversby two crews. Wentian also has a five-meter robotic arm that can be used to move small and medium-sized equipment. It can be linked with the 10-meter robotic arm on the Tianhe module to create a joint arm capable of reaching all major parts of the Tiangong station, according to the designer. Pang Zhihao, an observer of manned spaceflights, said the Wentian program is one of the most challenging and sophisticated space programs China has embarked on. You can imagine just how difficult it must have been to design, manufacture and deploy such a massive, advanced space lab," he said.“设计、制造和部署如此庞大、先进的太空实验室非常困难。”"Now that it has been successfully launched, new challenges are emerging in terms of its flight control, trajectory maneuvers and docking. Both Wentian and Tianhe are big and heavy while there are astronauts inside the Tianhe. We have no prior experience of connecting two spacecraft of this size."“现在问天实验舱已经成功发射,在飞行控制、弹道机动和对接方面会出现新的挑战。 Wang Yanan, editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, called the space lab a "marvel of modern engineering and technology". He said that once scientific equipment inside Wentian begins to operate, the equipment will become valuable assets for scientists around the world by making many new science ideas possible and fostering international cooperation.《航天知识》杂志主编王亚男称该空间实验室是“现代工程技术的奇迹”。 Mission planners said the Tiangong station's second lab, Mengtian, will be lifted by a Long March 5B from Wenchang in October. After it is connected with the Tiangong, the station will form a T-shaped structure and astronauts will have as much as 110 cubic meters of usable space. After the labs, the Tianzhou 5 cargo craft and the Shenzhou XV crew are scheduled to arrive at the massive orbiting outpost around the end of the year. Upon its completion, the Tiangong will be manned regularly by groups of three astronauts in periods usually lasting six months. During handovers to a new three-astronaut group, the station will accommodate up to six astronauts. In the long run, the orbiting outpost will be capable of docking with multiple crewed and cargo ships at the same time and will also be able to link with foreign spacecraft if they have a Chinese-standard docking hatch. Currently, Tiangong is manned by the Shenzhou XIV mission crew, who entered the station late on June 5, several hours after their spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China. The third group of Tiangong occupants, Chen and his teammates are scheduled to stay in the station for six months to monitor the assembly of the colossal station in space. The flight of the three astronauts has inaugurated a 10-year period in which, barring unforeseen circumstances, Chinese astronauts will be in space every day. blast off英[blɑ:st ɔf]美[blæst ɔf]V.

From astronauts to submariners, here are some practical ways to boost your well-being and stave off cabin fever during those weeks stuck at home. ‘Have a schedule' Scott Kelly, a retired NASA astronaut, spent nearly a year aboard the International Space Station. He told AFP that mindset was crucial. “People need to have the right expectation, we don't know when this is gonna be over,” he said. “We could be in this for the long haul so your mindset needs to be: I'm living a similar thing to living in space for a year, I need to have a schedule, I need to get up at a regular time, to go to sleep at a regular time.” He also said exercise was key for both physical and mental well-being while confined. “You need to schedule time for exercise. If you cannot get out if you don't have a garden, raise the window shade, open the window and stick your head outside, make that part of daily routine.” Find your mission For Vincent Larnaudie-Eiffel, a former commander of a nuclear submarine, working well in confinement means finding and investing in your own personal “mission.” Just like on board the sub, “stuck in our apartments, we all share a mission and that is to protect others, medical workers, and successfully navigate this ordeal.” He said it was important to establish a daily routine and stick to it. “You can't give in... you need to do something with this suspended time.” For Larnaudie-Eiffel and his crewmates, this involved building models or growing plants under artificial light during their spare time. “It's also important that everyone has their own space,” he told AFP. “In a submarine it might be a cramped bed-space. It's the same in a cramped apartment.” ‘Try new things' Sailor Isabelle Autissier was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe alone. This involved a lot of time to herself. But she said she never felt lonely because “I chose to be alone.” For people stuck at home she recommends using the time “to try new things, reading, listening to different music, write your journal, take photos, start drawing.” Above all it's important that people don't look too far ahead. When she was at sea, facing an indeterminate amount of time alone “the first thing is not to count the days,” said Autissier. “You can't constantly be thinking I'll get there in three months, in a month, in 10 minutes.” ‘Morale dips are normal' Cyprien Verseux, an astrobiologist at Germany's University of Bremen, once spent over a year in a small pod with five other volunteers simulating conditions in a future mission to Mars. “It's normal for your morale and productivity to dip,” he said. “That's not a sign of weakness. Don't add guilt to your problems.” When in confinement for the experiment, Verseux wasn't allowed outside and was forbidden from communicating in real time with the outside world. “Even if we don't all react the same to confinement we can adopt good practise that makes these periods more manageable,” he said. He recommends choosing one or two activities and practising hard. “Also do your sport, light weights, do yoga, zumba... even if there's a lack of space there are solutions to stay in shape,” he said. Stay in touch In 2009, astronaut Frank de Winne became the first European to command the International Space Station. He said it was vital to maintain human contact, even if only electronically. “Means of communication are there, you have to make the effort and use them,” he said. The Belgian, now in quarantine on Earth, makes sure to video call his elderly mother at the same time each day. “That allows her to see me. It also creates a bit of structure for her because she knows that I'm going to call her,” he said. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/03/31/2003733674   Next Article   Topic: NASA and Tide team up to do laundry in space Tide is going to outer space. Under international treaty, private space actors, who are expected to put 45,000 satellites in low Earth orbit over the next several years, are under the legal responsibility of their host nations. Add to that an estimated 9,300 tonnes of space junk that is already orbiting the planet and the probability of space collisions and debris pollution is an issue of concern. Previously, a piece of paint the size of a fingernail struck the windscreen of a space shuttle, piercing two of three layers of glass. The fate of Long March 5B could refocus governments and international bodies on the issue of space sustainability, and that could provide more opportunity to firms like UK-based Astroscale that are preparing to tackle the debris problem with commercial junk-collecting services. Astroscale is currently demonstrating a vehicle called “ELSA-d” in lower Earth orbit to show that space debris clean-up is indeed possible. It is a fiendishly difficult task, especially if the target satellite is spinning and tumbling. The test is using a satellite to capture a test drone with a magnet. Ep.K126: Chinese rocket's chaotic fall to Earth highlights problem of space junk   Remnants of China's biggest rocket landed in the Indian Ocean on May 9, ending days of speculation over where the debris would hit and drawing US criticism over a lack of transparency. But the fiery fate of a booster rocket, wherever it comes down, speaks to the larger issue of space debris and space sustainability, especially as space becomes a target not just for national space programs but also increasingly the private sector. In time, larger objects will require a robotic arm. 15minstoday@gmail.com

The era of US crew transitions onboard the International Space Station has resumed with the launch of the Crew 2 mission to the orbiting facility and the return of the Crew -1 astronauts via the Commercial Crew Space X Crew Dragon Capsule. The flight is also is a moment of history in both the United States, Europe, and Japan in their space program as well, and the team brings all into perspective. Also, Sawyer Rosenstein was on hand for the Crew-2 Launch and collected some great sounds of the SpaceX Falcon 9 as it reaches for the Space Station with its multinational crew on board.   China places the first segment of its space station to orbit, but it's not without consequences to those back on Earth. The core stage of the Long March 5B booster was not equipped to be disposed of properly while on orbit. We explore some of the implications of this with our own Dr. Kat Robison.   A new NASA Administrator has been installed, and it's someone who is no stranger to US space policy and politics. Former Senator Bill Nelson has been sworn in as NASA's 14th Administrator, and the team has no shortage of observations and opinions to share on how the new Administrator's tenure may unfold.   The Human Landing System decision was handed down in recent weeks, but the single provider decision is not without controversy. We debate the wisdom of the decision and why the two other providers under consideration have filed protests.   To close the show for this week, we make the passing of a true gentleman who has forever made a mark in human space history. NASA Astronaut Michael Collins passed away at the age of 90 after a battle with cancer. The team celebrates his life and his accomplishments.   All that and more on this installment of Talking Space.   Show recorded: 5-4-2021   Host: Sawyer Rosenstein Panelists: Dr. Kat Robison, Gene Mikulka

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup!  Without further ado, the news update from the week of 3 - 9 May.1) China’s Long March 5B first stage re-enters Earth’s atmosphere and (seemingly) lands in the Indian Ocean10 days or so ago, China launched a Long March 5B rocket to put into orbit the core module of the Chinese Space Station. As mentioned last week, this rocket is a beast: it weighs over 800t at lift-off, can put up to 25t of payload into LEO, and is comparable to some of the largest operational rockets at the moment. Now as there was no upper stage, the core stage delivered the Tianhe module directly to orbit, and then enters successive decaying orbits before re-entering the atmosphere. In the case of this launch, the Long March 5B splashed down in the Indian Ocean, without creating any damage.2) JZYJ Completes Hot Test of Whole EngineLaunch startup JZYJ announced on Thursday 6 May that they had conducted a hot fire test of the fully-assembled Longyun engine. The Longyun engine is a 80t thrust gas generator cycle engine which burns liquid methane and liquid oxygen, and one of the two engines designed by China launch startup Jiuzhou Yunjian, the other one being the Lingyun engine which is a 10t thrust methalox engine (and which was the first engine they developed). This is one of the first test firings of the Longyun engine, with likely many more to come to test different levels of thrust and restarting the rocket engine multiple times, two key features for any VTVL reusable rocket.3) CASSPACE announces B+ Funding RoundOn 6 May CASSPACE announced a ~200M B+ round of funding. The announcement also noted that they have raised around RMB 600M in the past year from CAS, Yuexiu Capital, Zhongxin, Hunan Aviation and Aerospace Fund (湖南航空航天基金), etc. The article mentions that CASSPACE will have their first launch in H2 2021 of a solid-fueled rocket, and that their rocket is part of the CAS’s 13th Five-Year Plan Space Science and Technology Projects.  The rocket will have a payload to SSO of 1.5 tons, and has already completed a variety of tests.A lot of money being put into CASSPACE recently, and indeed, this is not the only second-tier/second-generation launch company to be having a big year. 2021 has seen Tianbing Aerospace and JZYJ also raise more money while reaching various technological milestones, while also seeing new entrants such as “Rocket Group” of Huzhou (火箭派).4) OneSpace “close to” raising a new round of funding for its Linglong solid and liquid fueled rockets, plans to IPO in 2022We heard over the past week in the Chinese media that OneSpace was close to raising new round of funding. This seems to confirm the comeback of the rocket company, which was rumored to be in dire straits after failing the orbital launch attempt of its OSM solid-fueled rocket. As reported in the DFH episode of Feb 1-7, OneSpace had successfully raised a round of funding in September 2020, and successfully performed a suborbital launch of an OS-X (6B) rocket in February 2021. The fact that they may be able to raise another round of funding a mere 7-8 months after the previous round shows the renewed attractiveness of the company. -------------------- This has been another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 26 April - 2 May.1) Chinese Space Station: launch of the core Module Tianhe on-board Launch March 5BOn April 29 2021, China successfully sent the first module of the Chinese Space Station into orbit. The module was a 22.5-ton core module called Tianhe (天和, or “heavenly peace”). It was launched aboard a Long March 5B.Tianhe is rightfully named the core module: it will be the centerpiece of the station which will host living quarters for the taikonauts, a bathroom, a kitchen, it will also be the main control unit (attitude, trajectory control), handles the fuel, power and air management systems. It is designed to host 3 taikonauts, and can hold up to 6 taikonauts during rotations. The Tianhe module will be joined next year by the Mengtian and Wentian experimental modules. In 2024, the Chinese space station will also be joined by a space telescope called Xuntian, which will not be physically connected to the station but will evolve in the vicinity, and docking only for maintenance purposes.2) Creation of a New Space SoE China SatNetMajor news update on Thursday 29 April which first came in the form of a press release from SASAC. The press release announced the creation of a China Satellite Networks Group Company, potentially SatNet for short, and puts that company under the direct administration of SASAC. SatNet is tasked with deploying and operating China’s LEO broadband constellation, widely speculated to be GuoWang. The creation of a SatNet company at this level of the SOE hierarchy is hugely significant. SatNet is, at least in theory, at the same level in the hierarchy as CASC, CASIC, and the big 3 telcos (all of which are also directly controlled by SASAC). If we compare this to the previous arrangement, you had China’s biggest broadband project being done by CASC (Hongyan), and another by CASIC (Hongyun), with both projects involving subsidiary companies with multiple shareholders (for example, Hongyan’s operating company, MacroNet, has shareholders including CASC, China Telecom, and CETC). This would have meant, presumably, that projects like Hongyan would have mostly used the technology of CASC, Hongyun would have used technology for CASIC, and the innovation and competition would have occurred in the long-term, after we find out how these constellations work.  On the other hand, the current situation with SatNet being at the same level as CASC, CASIC, the telcos, etc., means that it should, at least in theory, have a lot more freedom of choice in its sourcing options. 3) Long March 6 launches a Batch of 9 Smallsats into Orbit, many payloads of interestOn April 27th, China launched an impressive launch share mission on-board a Long March 6, putting 9 satellites into orbit. These satellites were:Qilu-1 and Qilu-4. Qilu-1 is a SAR satellite. Qilu-4 on the other hand is a high-resolution panchromatic EO satellite .Foshan-1 is a high res panchromatic EO satellite meant to be a technology verification platform of the Foshan-based Jihua Laboratory.Zhong’an Guotong-1 satellite (also called Hangsheng-1)Guodian Gaoke’s Tianqi-9 IoT satellite, developed by ASES Space.Origin Space’s NEO-1: a technology verification satellite, meant to trial the capture of a small celestial body and various orbital maneuvers.Golden Bauhinia-1-01 and -02 are two remote sensing satellites.Taijing-2 satellite, manufactued by Minospace, will be used primarily for remote sensing, and is the third satellite launched to be based on the MN-50 platform.  ---------------------------------------- Follow us on YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, as an audio podcast, and on our official website: https://www.dongfanghour.com/
