What would you like to see more of? Let us know!In this episode of Discover Daily we explore a new revelation: scientists have discovered that NASA's historic 1986 Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus occurred during an extremely rare solar wind event, leading to decades of potentially misleading assumptions about the ice giant's magnetic environment. The spacecraft encountered Uranus during a powerful solar wind compression that occurs less than 4% of the time, capturing the planet in an unusual state that may have skewed our entire understanding of its magnetosphere.T he compressed state observed during the flyby likely pushed plasma out of the system while intensifying radiation belts, suggesting that Uranus's magnetic environment might be more similar to other gas giants than previously thought. This discovery challenges long-held beliefs about Uranus's "vacuum" magnetosphere and unexpectedly intense radiation belts, indicating these might be temporary features rather than permanent characteristics. This revelation has major implications for future space exploration, particularly in the search for subsurface oceans on Uranian moons. Scientists now believe that Uranus's largest moons, Titania and Oberon, spend most of their time within the planet's magnetic bubble, making future ocean detection missions more feasible than previously thought. The findings will significantly influence how we plan future missions to Uranus, emphasizing the need for extended observation periods rather than brief encounters. From Perplexity's Discover Feed:https://www.perplexity.ai/page/we-might-be-wrong-about-uranus-12krxS2oQOq.kkW8sici9QPerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. Implications from the velocity profile of the M87 jet: a possibility of a slowly rotating black hole magnetosphere

Implications from the velocity profile of the M87 jet: a possibility of a slowly rotating black hole magnetosphere by Motoki Kino et al. on Thursday 15 September Motivated by the measured velocity profile of the M87 jet using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) by Park et al. indicating that the starting position of the jet acceleration is farther from the central engine of the jet than predicted in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we explore how to mitigate the apparent discrepancy between the simulations and the KaVA observation. We use a semi-analytic jet model proposed by Tomimatsu and Takahashi. consistently solving the trans-magnetic field structure but neglecting any dissipation effects. By comparing the jet model with the observed M87 jet velocity profile, we find that the model can reproduce the logarithmic feature of the velocity profile, and can fit the observed data when choosing $c/(100r_{g}) lesssim Omega_{F} lesssim c/(70r_{g})$ where $r_{g}$ is the gravitational radius. While a total specific energy (${cal E}$) of the jet changes the terminal bulk Lorentz factor of the jet, a slower angular velocity of the black hole magnetosphere (funnel region) ($Omega_{F}$) makes a light-cylinder radius ($r_{rm lc}$) larger and it consequently pushes out a location of a starting point of the jet acceleration. Using the estimated $Omega_{F}$ we further estimate the magnetic field strength on the event horizon scale in M87 by assuming Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process is in action. The corresponding magnetic flux threading the event horizon of M87 is in good agreement with a magnetically arrested disc (MAD) regime. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07264v1

Radiative reconnection-powered TeV flares from the black hole magnetosphere in M87

Radiative reconnection-powered TeV flares from the black hole magnetosphere in M87 by Hayk Hakobyan et al. on Tuesday 06 September Active Galactic Nuclei in general, and the supermassive black hole in M87 in particular, show bright and rapid gamma-ray flares up to energies of 100 GeV and above. For M87, the flares show multiwavelength components, and the variability timescale is comparable to the dynamical time of the event horizon, suggesting that the emission may come from a compact region nearby the nucleus. However, the emission mechanism for these flares is not well understood. Recent high-resolution general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations show the occurrence of episodic magnetic reconnection events that can power flares nearby the black hole event horizon. In this work we analyze the radiative properties of the reconnecting current layer under the extreme plasma conditions applicable to the black hole in M87 from first principles. We show that abundant pair production is expected in the vicinity of the reconnection layer, to the extent that the produced secondary pair-plasma dominates the reconnection dynamics. Using analytic estimates backed by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations we demonstrate that even in the presence of strong synchrotron cooling, reconnection can still produce a hard power-law distribution of pair plasma imprinted in the outgoing synchrotron (up to few tens of MeV) and the inverse-Compton signal (up to TeV). We produce synthetic radiation spectra from our simulations, which can be directly compared with the results of future multiwavelength observations of M87* flares. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02105v1

There's so much we don't know, or take for granted, about the way life really works on this planet. There's the biosphere, which includes the soft electricity of the Terran Field. I coined the words “Terran Field” to describe the background organic electrical nature of the interplay between life on the planet's surface and its oceans, and the upper atmospheric structures that feed subtle electrical energies between the ionosphere and ground. Lightning for example - without it we wouldn't have life, or the components that create and sustain life. Over the past half century some members of the military-scientific community have discovered some of what Tesla understood, and weaponized it for their own purposes. As a result, much of what we witness or experience daily now is degrading our life experience, or the ability of the planet to sustain itself. Geoengineering, smartphones, smart meters, 5G, nano particulates, graphene oxide, mind control…nefarious activity that victimizes the unawares. We must become aware to change course…we need to understand to respond. Episode 102: On this episode, long-time UFO researcher and author Preston Dennett joins me again, along with lifelong ET contactee, Dolly Safran. Preston documents the lifelong ET contact experiences of Dolly in his latest book, Symmetry: A True UFO Adventure. Dolly talked about her first contact experience and about how her experiences evolved. She claims to still have contactee experiences to this day. Unlike many others, Dolly has recall of most all of her contact experiences. She is well aquainted with the Grey Aliens she has contact with and claims they are here to help humanity and that they are our progenitors. Preston talked about the unusual way that he and Dolly met and how he came to write the book about her story. Dolly claims that the ETs themselves recommended that she reach out to Preston to help tell her story. She also talked about how the ETs have warned about our destructive ways and she also talked about how a large scale Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) event is coming soon and that the ETs have left Earth due to it. She warned that this CME event will be coming soon and that we all must prepare for it. To find out more about Preston and his work, you can visit his website at, prestondennett.weebly.com. Those decays generate quite a bit of heat - about half the heat inside the Earth is credited to these decays. As we've seen, that heat has tectonic consequences! The churning of molten rock not only drives volcanic eruptions, but also is responsible for all the moving and shaking of the continents on earth. Most of this movement is slow and imperceptible to us, but when we can sense major movement. It's usually as a violent earthquake. The collective impact of all those humble alpha particles literally shapes the world around us.We say humble in part because, alpha radiation is mostly harmless. Human skin is pretty good at stopping alpha particles emitted from a decaying nucleus. You wouldn't want to ingest any uranium, that's for sure, but having a tiny bit in room with you isn't necessarily a problem. This is NOT true for all radioactive materials, some of which can be extremely hazardous. This is because alpha particles come out with a characteristic velocity that - frankly - isn't very high. Remember, alpha particles are just little fragments of a nucleus that just kind of escaped. Other forms of nuclear radiation include beta and gamma rays, which are essentially electrons and photons. These decays are driven directly by the subnuclear forces and because they have less electric charge and far less mass, can penetrate much deeper into living tissue. And that's what makes them hazardous. They can mess with your insides.Nuclear decays are NOT the only radiation we are exposed to. They is plenty raining down on us from the sky. You see, the enormous nuclear furnace known as the sun does more than light up our skies. It is constantly streaming a LOT other particles, like electrons, protons, alpha particles, a bunch of other ionized stuff. Not the kind of stuff you want to be directly exposed regularly. As we'll see, the collective effects of the humble alpha particle inside the Earth protects us from a lot this “solar wind” of electrically charged particles.GeomagnteismThe Earth, like some of the other planets in our solar system, generates it's own magnetic field. It's a weak magnetic field  - it takes the WHOLE EARTH to move your tiny compass needle just a little bit - but it's still big in size. It reaches out into space, well past our own atmosphere. As we discussed in part two of this series, magnetic fields are created by the motion of electric charges. Big magnetic fields require a bunch of electric charges working together, moving coherently. For the electromagnets used in MRI machines, many many electrons - otherwise known as the electrical current - are pushed through many, many loops of wire. To generate the Earth's magnetic field, something even bigger must be happening. Our best working type of model - one that best fits the data - is known as a magnetic dynamo. I'll sketch the idea for you here. For a plant like Earth to generate a magnetic field via the dynamo model, we need three things: 1. A conducting liquid inside the planet. 2. A large amount of coherent motion 3. And heat. Lots of heat.As to the conducting liquid:The outer core of the Earth is believed to be made of iron. Liquid iron. Heavy things - like iron - sink, remember? So there's a lot of it deep within the earth. The earth is so big and so hot inside that that there's a whole inner layer of that metal in liquid form, churning. As to the large collective motion:The earth itself is spinning - which we see as day and night. The rotational motion of the Earth itself stirs up that liquid iron coherently - like the loops of wire in an electromagnet. For the experts out there, it's the Coriolis Force - as sort of three-dimensional version of the centripetal acceleration you feel in the car when taking a turn too sharply. It's the same effective force that drives hurricanes to spin counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. And finally, As to the heat:Well. We discussed that in part four. About half of the Earth's radiant heat comes from the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. In other words, from the production of helium. All that collective motion of a hot, conducting fluid is what builds the coherent magnetic field - the dipole field - that surrounds the Earth. And it's a good thing that we have one. We're probably alive today because of it.The Solar WindBack to that issue of the solar wind. The atmosphere of the sun is hot. REALLY hot. Millions of degrees hot. Way hotter than the inside of the Earth. When matter is that hot, atoms can't exist in their familiar state. The nuclei and electrons separate into a PLASMA. The tongues of light emitted by a bonfire - or a bolt of lightning from the sky - are both examples of a plasma. They're hot, and because the electrons and nuclei are separated into a sort of electrically active gas, they cause a lot of electromagnetic disturbance. For us that mostly means they generate a lot of light.Given that, it might not surprise you to learn that the atmosphere of the sun is a plasma. But there is more to a plasma than just light. Each tiny particle - each electron or charge nucleus - carries with it an electromagnetic field. When they are bound together, the positive charges in the nucleus neutralize the negative charges of the electrons. That tight binding keeps the surrounding electromagnetic field pretty tame. When things get hot enough to separate the atoms in something as BIG as a planet or the solar atmosphere, all those tiny electromagnetic fields merge to form large, collective magnetic fields.Kind of like a SUPERCHARGED version of the magnetic dynamo we just discussed. Some of the charged particles in the upper atmosphere of the sun - the corona - escape into space. It's a constant stream. The further they get from the sun, the less of its gravitational pull they experience, and so the faster they travel. But it's not just the intense heat of the sun that drives them away. The collective magnetic field of all those churning, charged particles in the solar   further accelerates those particles away from the the sun and… unfortunately… towards us.The Magnetosphere and the IonosphereThe magnetic field that surrounds the Earth is our shield from this solar wind. That shield extends way out into space, its a bit over five times as big as the Earth. At that distance, much of that incoming solar plasma get deflected back out into space. What isn't is caught up by the magnetic field and driven to the poles, where they eventually get focused into a donut shaped belt around the Earth. Occasionally, when that so-called space weather is REALLY bad, it literally lights up our skies as the Aurora.By keeping those charged particles away from the surface, the Earth's magnetic field protects us from direct exposure to that radiation. But the protection afforded by the dynamo magnetic field goes far beyond that.Neither Venus nor Mars generates its own magnetic field.  Exposed to the  solar wind, their atmospheres are literally being blown away by the impact of those charged particles. Venus still has a lot of its atmosphere left to give, but poor little mars has all but lost its protective atmosphere. That protective magnetic field - driven in part by the same radioactive, alpha decays that create helium - protects both us and our atmosphere.

Amy situation: Amy was admitted to the hospital at 29 weeks, on September 3rd, when she began leaking amniotic fluid due to a preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). During her hospital stay, Amy received antibiotics and steroids to help prevent infection and develop baby Liam's lungs. On September 21st, Liam Bruce Evans was born at 31 weeks and 6 days after a placental abruption. He weighed 4 lbs 15oz and was 17 in long. Liam has been lucky to have no serious complications from his premature birth. Due to his lungs being underdeveloped when he was born, he has been on and off cpap to give his lungs time to mature. He still experiences occasional apnea (periods of decreased heart rate and extended pauses in breathing) when breathing on his own. Right now he is working on gaining weight, breathing on his own full time, and drinking from a bottle instead of using a feeding tube so that he can go home. Something odd is happening to Earth's magnetic field. Brian, Blake and Richard are back with an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! Gibson has announced that it intends to launch a record label and the guys chew this over before pondering the idea of the Mega Music Corporation. Will this be a positive move? Will they take over the world? Is Joe B flying to space in a Gibson Rocket? Brian is a fan of the idea, and wonders if he can start something similar and Blake talks about the "New Artist Model" that is prevalent. Do you care about the views of artists you love ? Richard doesn't always, and  believes that social media has made everyone a critic / journalist and not always with great results...Richard tells us why he hates websites that autoplay music, especially loud music, and doubly especially when an advert plays in a window he cant find, and the one time he was asked to make a website in Comic Sans. It nearly ended his career and it then turns his ranty boomer mode up to 11. EHX's Mike Matthews has posted up a cryptic page on his website that talks about how he is planning to tap into a massive free energy source that could solve energy problems for all of us on planet earth. Will it work or not? Who knows, but if anyone can save us, it is Mike Matthews. Or perhaps this is a sinister plan to take over the worlds via a mesh network of Big Muffs?? Have you ever found something inside a pedal that wasn't supposed to be there? One of our listeners sent in a picture of a Wah pedal that had clearly been used for someone's stash... Even though it's been more than a hundred years, we're going to talk about EMP attacks and a real warning about it. Hi everybody. Craig Peterson here. Thanks for listening. Hey, if you have your Google smart speaker, Google Home, just say, Hey, Google play. WGAN and you can listen to us any time. I probably just turned on your Google speakers. Sorry about that. But it is really handy. That's what I use when I'm up in the shower, et cetera, these smart devices. Now let's get into this. Very interesting article that just came out this week from Zero Hedge. Tyler Durden is the one that brought this up. We have in fact been given some really great information about this as part of the FBI's InfraGard program. Now, if you are responsible for IT and more particularly responsible for security, you really should join the FBI's Infragard program. I N F R A G A R D.org is where you'll find them online. This is a channel that the FBI uses to let civilians, as well as military contractors and frankly, even various government employees of the federal and state level. It lets them disseminate all of this type of information. It's absolutely fascinating. Some of them, the stuff I can share with you, some of the stuff is on a need to know basis. Obviously I can't share all of it with you, but I do try and bring some of these things up like this one. The US Department of Homeland security has released a new report that's warning about a potential electromagnetic pulse. Now, specifically, this is talking about an electromagnetic pulse as part of an attack against the United States. I mentioned at the very beginning, something called the Carrington event. It's fascinating and this is something that we've talked about on the training for the FBI's InfraGard program that I conducted and you probably know I did that for a couple of years. It's a volunteer position and I did a whole bunch of different pieces of training. This particular event occurred in September 1859. Now think back to 1859, there was not much going on from the electrical side, 1859. They didn't have too many computers, right? Obviously they didn't have any of them, but back then they did have a couple of things they did have Telegraph for one. What they found happened was that these Telegraph machines were getting burned out by this event. They weren't quite sure what it was, what was going on. They even had Telegraph operators that were injured from it. There is something called a solar coronal mass ejection. This is a sunspot back in 1859, for those of us, like I ham, you know that right? I have an advanced class ham license. Yeah, totally. Am I funny? But I have a license from the federal communications commission. This is called solar cycle number 10, which one from 1855 to 1867 and us hams keep close tabs on the solar cycles because they affected the weather. They affect the temperature on earth and solar cycles also affect the propagation of radio waves. Why do they affect it? It's because these ejections from the sun come, they hit the Earth's atmosphere and they charge it. If you've ever seen the Northern lights, that's an example of solar radiation hitting our Earth's atmosphere for lack of a better term. It's really hitting our Magnetosphere, but I don't want to get too detailed here. This is very fascinating because back then they called it a white light flare. That is a British astronomer Richard Carrington, as well as co-astronomer here, Richard Hodson. It was named after Carrington though. It basically burned out telegraph systems. Now you think about a mass ejection from the sun. Think about it being very kind of limited in scope, right? How big is it? You probably have seen pictures, videos of these injections coming up from the sun's surface. Well, what ends up happening is our entire earth's upper atmosphere and the Magnetosphere ends up getting charged by these. So it doesn't just affect one area. Like it's aimed like a, like a laser beam down in Missouri and hits the center of the country and that's the only problem. Now what happens here is that will affect us worldwide. It will affect some areas more than others, certainly. But it'll affect us worldwide. It will knock out our satellites that are up there right now. It will cause blackouts. We saw that already some extended outages of the electrical grid here in the Northeast. This particular storm I'm thinking of was when was that?  I think it might've been 84, the storm up in Quebec that knocked out the power to the province of Quebec from a solar storm. So we could be in a whole lot of trouble. It could also damage all of our, or some of our major transformers. We do not keep those in inventory. These kinds of super transformers, if you will, there's a number of them located across the country. And knock out grids across the country. It could take from many months to years to get back all of our electrical infrastructures depending on what happens. Here's what Homeland security is also worried about. It. Isn't just a solar flare and they are worried about that and I can tell you, I have had people on the webinars. I ran for the FBI that are telling us that indeed they have been working with the power companies, et cetera, to put in some controls, it would stop the problems from one of these coronal mass ejections these solar flares. So we're pretty much already set for those or we will be within the next couple of years. What we're worried about is what the Chinese I've been up to. Apparently the Chinese government has been working for the last 25 years on plans to defeat the United States and kind of their lead plan appears to be an EMP. Basically what they're looking at is a cyber Pearl Harbor attack and they've been looking at that because it's easy to do. All they have to do is set off a nuclear bomb up in the atmosphere above the United State s and it could cover the US coast to coast 1500 miles. If it was set off at 300 miles above the surface of the earth and conditions were right. Could be very, very bad. We ve gotta be careful. China has been exploiting some of our weaknesses. I remember 2004, you might remember the power grid outage, we had up here in the Northeast and it started up in upstate New York and various rumors about it actually, surely having been an attack attempt. Just kind of testing things out and it went awry. There are other reports so that things happen and hard to say, but we do know. That China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, as well as international terrorists have hacked some of our key infrastructures out there. Something like this could be very, very bad there. DHS Homeland security is field testing, a more resilient, critical infrastructure, which is really good. They've got a number of demonstration and pilot projects planned and others underway. So, we'll see what happens here with the EMP vulnerabilities that we have. President Trump back in 2019, signed in an executive order that is really trying to speed things up here. They delegated power to the White House for EMP preparedness. Hey, stick around. We'll be right back. And we're going to be talking about the 2020 election interference and what is the US doing here when it comes to Russia? Zaraar, aged 8, has questions about the Earth's magnetic field. Why is the Earth's magnetic field so weak, even though the Earth is so big? What causes the Earth's magnetosphere? Do other planets have magnetic fields around them? Great questions that lead to discussions about some of the quirks of our magnetic field. Like the South Atlantic Anomaly, magnetic pole reversals and the most stunning light show on the planet; aurora borealis and aurora australis. Elsa Montagnon, BepiColombo Spacecraft Operations Manager, discusses the latest mission to Mercury, its complexity, and what scientists hope to discover. Elsa Montagnon is an interplanetary spacecraft operations expert. She earned her engineering degrees from the Ecole Centrale Paris and Technical University of Munich. Montagnon joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1999. Before her work as the BepiColombo spacecraft operations manager, Montagnon was the flight operations system engineer on ESA's groundbreaking Rosetta mission. The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe's premier, advanced agency that serves as the entrée to space. The ESA formats and oversees the development of Europe's space capability to track progress and make sure that the investment in space is properly benefitting the people of Europe as well as the world community. Montagnon discusses ESA's collaboration with a partner Japanese space agency, JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. She gives an overview of the BepiColombo's mission: to explore planet Mercury. She states that Mercury was visited twice before by man-made machines, missions that introduced many questions for researchers as would be expected. She details the importance of putting satellites into different orbits to maximize their findings. Their mission intends to launch a lower orbit survey of the chemical composition of Mercury's surface, etc., with JAXA's higher orbit survey satellite that will analyze the magnetosphere and other important issues. A magnetosphere is a region of space that surrounds an astronomical object in which various charged particles are manipulated or impacted by that object's overall magnetic field. She explains some of the difficulties with a mission to Mercury, due to its close proximity to the sun and the complex trajectory needed to make the journey there. She describes the year-by-year trajectory that must be made in order to approach Mercury, specifically discussing energy and orbit. Survival itself is a challenge in such a high-temperature environment. Near Mercury, the energy from the sun is approximately ten times that of what we experience on Earth. As such, much research and effort goes into coatings and thermal blankets that are absolutely necessary to protect any craft that is approaching Mercury due to the excessive temperature. The space-engineering expert discusses some of the extra advantages of a Mercury mission, such as the ability to study solar flares and gather new information about the sun. Montagnon explains that the latest mission has literally just begun and that the Mercury arrival will not happen until 2025. She discusses the technical aspects of some of the instruments that will be utilized during the mission, and how they track the mission and the data. Montagnon states that there is a full laboratory on board that allows for exploration and discovery, as scientists seek to take full advantage of every aspect of the mission from beginning to end, from capturing never-before seen views of Venus and other important mission activities.
