Send us a textWhat happens when the dream your mother sacrificed everything for becomes your personal nightmare? Johannesburg-based filmmaker Karabo Lediga joins us to explore this haunting question through her debut feature film "Sabbatical" – a raw, honest portrayal of mother-daughter relationships in post-apartheid South Africa. A 30-something year old woman called Lesego, is the compelling main character of this story. She is forced to return to her childhood home in the township in Pretoria after a professional downfall. While living in her mother's house, she has to reckon with having become alien to her own mother, how her Model C school experience has facilitated the fragility of that relationship, and the psychological cost of having being thrown in all-white spaces in order to achieve the success or dreams that parents desperately want for their children. Our conversation ventures beyond the film into Karabo's amazing film and television career. Her credits include Netflix's "Queen Sono" and the touching short film "What Did You Dream?" that was inspired by her own grandmother's story. Karabo shares invaluable insights about sustaining a creative career in South Africa's evolving film landscape. Bonus: she shares the different funding mechanisms available to South African filmmakers—a system that is relatively unique to the country—and her commitment to authentic storytelling despite industry pressures.Sabbatical is a much needed voice from South Africa's so-called born free generation. It's entertaining, it offers deep cultural insights and serves as an amazing showcase of Karabo's unique voice. Whether you're a film enthusiast, a creative professional, or someone navigating complex family dynamics, Karabo's perspectives will resonate long after the credits roll.LINKS AND MENTIONS Model C - Formerly whites-only public schools that were desegregated after Apartheid. Shoot us a Text. We're under 2 months away from the auto industry accelerator, ASOTU CON! You can get your tickets now at asotucon.com.Today we're talking about how tech giant Foxconn is getting ready to reveal new EV partnerships and speculate on who those could be. Plus, we cover affordability easing and In N Out's servant leadership mentality.Around 80 tornados were reported as a result of this past weekend's powerful storm system, leaving a trail of destruction across the Central and Eastern US. As the communities affected begin to rebuild, we know dealers will do what they do best—step up, lend a hand, and take care of their neighbors. At ASOTU, we're here to amplify their efforts, share their stories, and support in any way we can.Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn, better known as Apple's iPhone manufacturer, is reportedly closing in on EV partnerships with two Japanese companies. This news follows speculation about a possible alliance with Nissan or Honda, especially after their failed merger talks.Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Foxconn's official name) is expected to finalize the deals within two months, according to Chairman Young Liu.Liu did not confirm the companies but emphasized contract design and manufacturing services as part of the agreements. The March 11 appointment of Ivan Espinosa as Nissan's CEO could pave the way for new negotiations.Foxconn is making global EV plays, having already signed deals with ZF Group (axle systems), Stellantis (semiconductors), and Infineon (silicon carbide chips), and aiming to start North American production of its Model C crossover in late 2025 to counter rising U.S. tariffs.Liu: “We are not looking to acquire Nissan but are interested in working with them.”New-vehicle affordability improved in February, reaching its best level in over three years, according to the Cox Automotive/Moody's Analytics Vehicle Affordability Index. The average price of new vehicles fell by 1.3% for the month, improving affordability despite higher interest rates.Auto loan rates rose slightly to 10.16%, the highest in four months, but income growth (+3.5% YoY) helped offset this.Typical monthly car payments declined to $748, down 1.1% month-over-month and 1.3% YoY.It now takes 37.2 weeks of median income to buy a new vehicle, an improvement from 39.0 weeks a year ago.On the heels of being named the 8th Best Company to Work For, In-N-Out Burger CEO Lynsi Snyder credits her “servant leadership” approach as the driving force behind the company's success. The heiress views her employees as family and follows a leadership philosophy that prioritizes the employees over executive demands, or as we would say around here: “Love People More Than You Love Hamburgers”Servant leadership focuses on employee growth and well-being, a value Snyder says she inherited from her family. Her grandfather built the foundation with hard work and passion, while her father emphasized humility and quality.HeHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about getting out of our comfort zones. When was the last time you felt ready to do something scary? If you're human, then probably never. My guest this week is Eddy Smits, a motivational speaker and communication and leadership expert. We also talk about resisting the urge to conform, embracing our authentic selves and treating life with more playfulness.About My GuestEddy Smits is a seasoned professional artist who spent 25 years captivating diverse audiences and, as a hospital clown, touched the lives of over 10,000 sick and palliative children. Was heißt Selbstliebe für Céline? Und warum heißt mehrgewichtig zu sein, nicht gleich ungesund zu leben? Für Céline war es eine gute Idee, bei der Model-Castingshow mitzumachen. Als Siegerin ist sie seitdem ein international gefragtes Model. Sie ist froh, dass sie schon 23 und ihre Persönlichkeit reifer war, als sie zu modeln begann. Und sie ist wahnsinnig dankbar, dass ihr die Unterstützung der Familie bei allem immer sicher war. "Being yourself may sound easy, but it's actually the hardest thing you can do. And that's okay. It takes time, but it will come.” Have you ever wondered if there's more to life than just going through the motions? What if the key to a fulfilling life lies in an unexpected source: the art of clowning? In situations that often feels heavy and overly complicated, it's easy to lose sight of who we truly are and the joy in everyday moments. Many of us are searching for a way to reconnect with ourselves and with others, and today, we're exploring a unique approach that does just that. The qualities of a clown—authenticity, vulnerability, and radical honesty—can profoundly transform not only how we interact with others but also how we see ourselves. Embracing these traits can help us live a life with purpose, view failure as a tool for growth, and apply these principles to build better relationships, navigate life's challenges, and improve in business or leadership roles. Eddy Smits has spent over a decade as a hospital clown, visiting thousands of sick children and bringing joy to their lives in the most challenging circumstances. His work inspired him to explore the deeper impact of authentic communication and human connection, which led him to write his book, Model C. Eddy shares how clowning has shaped his journey, the lessons he's learned about resilience, and how he applies these principles in his work as a personal development coach. In the Vhembe district of Limpopo, one of South Africa's poorest provinces, a non-profit organisation named Sumbandila Scholarship Trust was established with a mission to identify children who are exceptionally bright, particularly in maths and English, from poor rural homes. Many of them were slipping through the cracks of South Africa's struggling educational system. The trust provides three programs, including Saturday and holiday school programs, full bursaries for independent or Model C schools, and comprehensive support for university education and beyond. Sumbandila, which means "Show the Way," serves as a model of what can be achieved when bright students receive the right support and encouragement. In an interview, Leigh Bristow, the Founder and Executive Director of Sumbandila, shared the success stories of some of her intelligent and determined pupils. One of her former pupils is now a teacher at St Stithians College in Johannesburg, and an orphan now works in Risk Management at Investec. Bristow says what makes the program so successful is that it operates like a family, there is wrap-around support at university level and beyond. Sumbandila is currently developing a prototype of a hub that would enable children to self-learn. “Children have a remarkable ability to teach themselves given the right set of tools,” she said. Bristow says she also has a vision for an alumni program to guide former students in financial literacy, home ownership, wellness and voting.
In this episode, we celebrate the 200th episode of the podcast/show. Initially, the host had planned on offering live coaching sessions but unfortunately, no one signed up. This leads the host to reflect on what this lack of sign-ups means and how he can self-coach himself through this situation. He recognizes that berating himself or blaming others won't solve the problem and instead focuses on shifting his thoughts and approaching the situation with intentionality. Throughout the episode, the host shares his disappointment but also emphasizes the importance of learning from setbacks. The host ponders why no one signed up for the coaching and expresses a desire to improve and overcome such challenges in the future. The host starts by reflecting on why he hasn't been able to capture people's attention and mentions that he is currently listening to Robert Cialdini's book "Influence" to learn about ethical influence. He admits feeling disappointed and acknowledges that he let himself down by not learning the necessary lessons to attract people. Despite this setback, he remains determined to offer live coaching sessions in the future, approximately every 10 episodes. To process his feelings of being let down, the host decides to do a thought download. He explores the circumstance of nobody signing up for coaching and acknowledges that this thought might mean he needs to improve his communication skills or that he may not be a good coach. He also realizes the need to improve his advertising on Facebook and start promoting earlier to generate more trust from potential clients. The host understands the importance of learning from mistakes and generating more thoughts to gain a better understanding of his emotions. The host then moves on to using a model to process his thoughts and emotions. He explains the model and how it can be applied to any circumstance. The circumstance he chooses is that nobody showed up for coaching. The next step is to choose one thought to focus on, such as "I am not a good marketer," and examine the feeling that thought generates. The host introduces an app called "How We Feel" that helps break down emotions into four quadrants. The host realizes that the emotion that resonates with him the most is frustration. He discusses how frustration can lead to negative actions, such as wanting to quit or engaging in negative self-talk. The host emphasizes that engaging in negative self-talk or quitting won't lead to success in his business. He acknowledges that the problem lies in his thoughts and beliefs and the need to change them to gain control over his emotions and direction in life. He encourages embracing emotions, sitting with them, and fully experiencing them instead of avoiding them. Through exploring his frustration, the host describes how it feels in his body and acknowledges that emotions only last for a short time. He stresses the importance of questioning the truth and usefulness of thoughts and choosing better ones. For example, reframing the thought "I'm not a good marketer" as "I am an inexperienced marketer" and focusing on learning and growth. The host shares his desire to become a successful marketer and mentions a podcast by Ray Edwards that he highly recommends. He expresses his resolve to take action and start coaching others, using this podcast as a way to coach listeners. While no one has signed up for coaching yet, the host believes it will happen and he will become a great marketer through practice and learning. He discusses the importance of selling ideas and effective communication, particularly in relationships, and reflects on his experiences in coaching both men and women. The host also mentions the importance of finding the balance between promoting and overwhelming the audience and acknowledges the need for improvement in his marketing strategies. The host concludes the episode by expressing gratitude to the listeners for tuning in to the special 200th episode. He encourages them to leave comments on the website and share their thoughts. He emphasizes that his purpose is to help listeners overcome challenges and improve themselves as men. The host reminds listeners to take intentional steps towards having better relationships and offers his coaching services in the future. He reassures listeners that even as a coach, he still has emotional reactions but chooses not to respond to them. He believes that true freedom and joy can be found through intentional thoughts and navigating life's highs and lows. The episode concludes with the host expressing his gratitude once again and his hope to see listeners in 10 weeks for more coaching. Despite almost thirty years of racial desegregation of our schools, many former Model C-schools and private schools are still institutionally racist or exclusionary in other ways.In this edition of In The Ring With Eusebius Mckaiser, we talk frankly about what is going on in our schools, and what needs to be done to decolonialise our schools so that they are more just and inclusive spaces for all the stakeholders.Author Sue Nyathi and deputy head of St John's College, Houghton (Johannesburg) Allan Magubane joined Eusebius to reflect on the multiple social justice themes necessitated by this topic.

I just think that in the end, there's a lot of people who are smart, but there aren't always a lot of people who move you spiritually. And like my grandmother, my great grandmother, Virginia Brewer, I don't even know how far her education, but she had lived her life in a way, and she had become the embodiment of love. That she impacted so many people, so I think if you can tune in to love. You will love yourself, which means that you will embrace all the gifts and the legacies and the graces that you've been given, and you'll put them to work. If you love people, you will bring those gifts to people in a way that they can recognize it as good and they can feel like they were empowered and benefited by the excellence and the care. So I just think love it's not maybe what you would expect an intellectual person to say. I just think in the end, you don't remember people who were just smart. You remember people who moved you. - C Milano Harden

Guest : Danielle Gilbert If you are a regular listener, you would now that normally we have social activist Lisa Sonn on in this slot. Lisa is unavailable today but has referred us to our next guest. Now as we know the entire world is undergoing an examination of racism and more importantly systemic or institutionalized racism thanks to massive Black Lives Matter movement initiated in the United States. One of the issues that this movement has shone a light on in South Africa is the racist systems that occur in Model C and private schools. There have been many calls for elite schools across the country to reform their policies that directly or indirectly discriminate against certain students. This has inspired a lot of people to speak up on their own experiences. This month an Instagram account called you silence we amplify was created and is a platform where students of elite schools (past or present) can share acts of racism they experienced as students of colour. One such person is Danielle Gilbert, a person of colour who attended an elite all-girls school.

CliffCentral.com — In the wake of the racism scandal at prestigious Johannesburg school, St John's College, Andrew and Rori tackle the issue of how black learners are treated and the sense of belonging they have in elite private and former Model C schools that were reserved exclusively for white learners under apartheid. They spend some time discussing Headmaster Paul Edey's response to the crisis, and whether it serves as a reflection of his character and his ability to continue leading the school. They are joined in studio by St John's 2016 headboy Mpilo Mseleku, Irvine Lehloo (who wrote a much publicised letter in defense of Paul Edey) and Gcina Mdluli, a former pupil of Roedean School in Johannesburg.
