26 years of career experience. Battalion Chief for City Of Mesa Fire & Medical Department. Chris actually wanted to be a police officer. While volunteering for a local sheriffs department he was able to meet Firefighters who explained to Chris the skills he had in mountain rescue most definitely translates to Fire Departments. With the being said the wheels started spinning for Chris and he applied to Phoenix & Mesa. Mesa was faster out the gate and Chris never looked back. I want the listeners to hear Chris's experience regarding the passion he has now didn't develop until later on his career and most importantly how the delivery you choose when exposed to new ideas you want to bring back to your own organization can have a negative effect if not done properly. Two quotes stuck out for me in our conversation. The first is “ Risk is managed by competence.” & the second “Values dictate culture.”IG: ffcrsleigher

Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers Our first stop is January, 1944. We're at Central Park. By 1944 Central Park, nearly one-hundred years old, was in the midst of renewal. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses had spent the past decade developing playgrounds, ballfields, handball courts, and other working class elements. In 1943 the restoration of the Harlem Meer was completed. "Please Keep off the Grass" signs, which had once dotted the meadows, were a thing of the past. Why are we in Central Park? Because over on the west coast, on Saturday January 22nd, Bob Hope, Dennis Day, and Joan Leslie appeared in a skit for Command Performance entitled “She Slapped His Face Under The Elevated Because He Only Had A One-Track Mind.” It was set in Central Park. In January of 1944 Bob Hope was radio's top comedian. His own show rating that month was 34.6. More than twenty-six million people were tuning in to hear him each week. Hope spent most of his time entertaining troops. For more info on Bob Hope in 1944, please tune into Breaking Walls episode 148. Five days after D-Day on June 11th, 1944, the park opened Weapons of War: An Exhibit of the Army Service Forces on the Great Lawn. Over the next two weeks, six-hundred thousand people came to see displays contrasting America's War Equipment with that of the Axis. The exhibit was organized by units: The Quartermaster Corps, the Chemical Warfare Service, the Medical Department, the Signal Corps, Ordnance, the Corps of Engineers, and the Transportation Corps. Each hour a flamethrower demonstration was staged for a grandstand which seated twenty-five-hundred people. The expo was in conjunction with the fifth War Bond Drive. #podcast #oldradioshows #oldtimeradio #historypodcast #oldtimeradioshows #editorial #1944 #centralpark #bobhope #joanleslie #dennisday

In the early 19th century, secret societies were having a moment. A professor at Transylvania University's Medical Department decided it would be a good idea to start one for his students. The Kentucky Chapter of the Kappa Lambda Society of Hippocrates didn't last long, but the seeds it planted spread all over the country, eventually influencing the formation of the American Medical Association. Will NIDA get rid of the word "Abuse" and go from National Institute on Drug Abuse to National Institute on Drugs and Addiction? Should people get a prescription to buy a vape pen? What is the science on label for marijuana products? Dr. Nora Volkow, director of NIDA shares her hopes for 2023 and discusses the science behind drug addiction. Nora D. Volkow, M.D., is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health. NIDA is the world's largest funder of research on the health aspects of drug use and addiction. Dr. Volkow's work has been instrumental in demonstrating that drug addiction is a brain disorder. As a research psychiatrist, Dr. Volkow pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate how substance use affects brain functions. In particular, her studies have documented that changes in the dopamine system affect the functions of frontal brain regions involved with reward and self-control in addiction. She has also made important contributions to the neurobiology of obesity, ADHD, and aging. Dr. Volkow was born in Mexico and earned her medical degree from the National University of Mexico in Mexico City, where she received the Robins Award for best medical student of her generation. Her psychiatric residency was at New York University, where she earned a Laughlin Fellowship from The American College of Psychiatrists as one of 10 outstanding psychiatric residents in the United States. Much of her professional career was spent at the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, where she held several leadership positions including Director of Nuclear Medicine, Chairman of the Medical Department, and Associate Director for Life Sciences. Dr. Volkow was also a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean of the Medical School at The State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Volkow has published more than 800 peer-reviewed articles, written more than 100 book chapters, manuscripts and articles, co-edited "Neuroscience in the 21st Century" and edited four books on brain imaging for mental and addictive disorders. She received a Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service, was a Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal (Sammies) finalist and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Volkow received the International Prize from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research for her pioneering work in brain imaging and addiction science; was awarded the Carnegie Prize in Mind and Brain Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University; and was inducted into the Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) Hall of Fame. She was named one of Time magazine's "Top 100 People Who Shape Our World"; one of "20 People to Watch" by Newsweek magazine; Washingtonian magazine's "100 Most Powerful Women"; "Innovator of the Year" by U.S. News & World Report; and one of "34 Leaders Who Are Changing Health Care" by Fortune magazine.

Vladimir Putin's eldest known daughter, Maria Vorontsova, is reportedly active in a Telegram chat group used by alumni of Moscow State University's Medical Department, where she sometimes writes about current events. Dmitry Kolezev, the editor-in-chief of the website Republic, shared this information on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, posting several screenshots received from a member of that chat group showing Vorontsova's comments. We have them, we get annoyed at them, and sometimes we aspire to become them. I'm talking about leaders. A lot of us are better at taking directions from others but a small few of us want to become them. How do we get there? What do we need to do to prepare our path to becoming a leader? In this week's episode, we look at Dr. Fabrizio's life from his humble beginnings on Long Island to running an entire Medical Department at Marketing and Advertising Agency. He shows us what it takes to become a leader. But not just a regular run-of-the-mill type of leader, someone who others can follow, seek proper mentorship, and most importantly, someone who takes you to the next level!Support the show
In this podcast I had the honor of interviewing Major General (retired) David Rubenstein. Among the many duties of his career, General Rubenstein was the commander of the Army Medical Department Center and School, which was the unit where I was an instructor before I retired from the Army, and he was also the chief of the Medical Service Corps, the Army branch that I served in for 23 years. Although I did not work directly with him on active duty, I can say that General Rubenstein was one of the most respected Medical Department generals I knew of during my career. While I only saw him at a distance while we were on active duty, over the last several years I have had the opportunity to get to know him post-retirement through our mutual interest in health administration education, and we had corresponded regularly about my RWL newsletter, so it was a real pleasure to get to interview him about his remarkable career. Local governments around the nation are grappling with police reform. One proposal that's been floated is to change the role and thereby the approach of law enforcement officers by giving them responsibilities beyond policing. Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Safety includes fire, medical and police services and all first responders are trained across all three disciplines. Department Chief Phan Ngo said the different roles mean officers see themselves as caretakers, building their reputation as public servants with residents.

This episode features Minna Hökkä (Research Unit of Nursing Science and Health Management, Medical Department, Oulu University, Oulu, Finland). Palliative care is provided across a wide range of healthcare settings, from tertiary hospitals to primary care. It has been recognized that palliative care services should be delivered in at least two or three levels (i.e., palliative care approach, generalist palliative care, specialist palliative care). All healthcare professionals should have the appropriate education and competencies to provide high-quality palliative care. Nurses have an important role in the provision of palliative care in all levels. This systematic integrative review is the first to focus on empirical studies defining the core competencies of palliative care nursing aligned with the different levels of palliative care provision. The results show that both the distinct levels of palliative care provision and corresponding palliative care nursing competencies are rarely defined. Rather than describing which core nursing competencies are the most related to each level of palliative care, previous research has concentrated on identifying the diverse competencies necessary for different specific settings and how they can be categorized in different aspects of nursing (e.g., competencies related to patient–nurse relationship). Nurses with a specialized or advanced nurse practitioner role in palliative care have extended clinical competencies, which include the ability to provide informal education and guidance to colleagues. Nursing competencies in palliative care, especially the ones that are more relevant to each level of palliative care provision, should be better outlined to enhance palliative care development, education and practice. Further research that addresses how nursing competencies differ across the levels of palliative care provision is needed. **I apologize for the throat-clearing in advance. I'm fighting a cold and I hit "mute", but my editing software still picked it up*** The different types of materials and hazards out there have changed the way we fight fire. With all the new and different types of materials we are finding in homes and even commercial buildings and how quickly they burn, it's important to select the appropriate weapon to fight it. Materials burn a lot quicker and a lot hotter, which means our window for effective attack along with our margin for error is getting smaller. My guest today, Adam Wilson*, talks about his experience in doing research on how nozzle selection, hose management, and hose line technique are crucial elements to consider when fighting fires and we talk about the resources that he's used to learn more about this specific topic. I would encourage you to look into when and where the next class on fire hose management is and get yourself and your crew enrolled. We do not rise to the level of the obstacle, we fall to the level of our training. Be the one people can count on. Here's a Medical Department update on my achilles tendon injury. I went to the doctor today. He noticed some swelling, but he said that based on my ability to move my foot, the tendon was not completely torn. I could have bursitis because there is a bursal sac right behind the tendon. The treatment consists of a course of steroids for a week, plus the wearing of the "walking boot". The boot immobilizes my foot to prevent continued injury while I heal. I will be wearing this for at least a week, then we'll reevaluate. If my left achilles looks the same as my right one, then I'll probably be in decent shape and won't need surgery. The injury is not as bad as it could have been. I need to be more careful about stretching and easing into any new form of exercise. Weight 7-day Avg. He also instructs regularly at various regional conferences with Fire By Trade. We sat down during our time at the Backstep Firemanship Symposium in September 2018 and discussed his investment in the fire service and how he leads new firefighters. We talk about brotherhood and what it really means, and how important it is for leaders, including chiefs, to be seen working and not just talking.
Today I walk the entire perimeter of Lake Fayetteville, though my watch did not record the full distance. In the Medical Department, I receive the lab report from the podiatrist which was good news. I will keep an eye on the situation though, in case the problem returns. I have been working out in the gym, twice this week, but I also sustained a “micro-injury” while attempting a squat for the first time, probably, since I was in high school. It was the same knee that had me out for six weeks last winter. The neurosurgeon recommended yoga, and I plan to take his advice, but I will start out slow in a beginner’s class. My weight is fluctuating within a range of about ten or eleven pounds. I’ve been reading about bulking and cutting, the idea that it is better to build muscle and fat, then cut muscle and fat. The muscle builds slower, but also burns slower. It’s an important day in Running: A Fever history. I thank you for supporting me and joining me in this journey. Weight (change since Jan 2018): 212 (-62) Workout time: 114 Minutes Total Distance (total since Nov 2017): 4.28 Miles (119.51) Steps: 16,177 Goals: (1) Run 10.5 miles in one day by 11/18/18 (2) Lose 100lbs by 12/25/18
It is the first day of spring and a beautiful one, though it was freezing when I left for work this morning. I give a full definition of anabolism and catabolism in the first ever Chemical Biology section of the Medical Department report. Two things happen when you have enough water and are not dehydrated. Anabolic hormones are released causing growth of muscle tissue vs. destruction (catabolic hormones) due to dehydration. And fat cells more easily release fat into the bloodstream. So it’s important to hydrate before and after strength training. Confession time again. I’m overdoing my exercise and still on the starvation plan to win the contest, but it is the last week and I will soon be able to go back to a healthier level of intake and work on my health and trying to return to a normal metabolism. Professor Lars Engebretsen, MD, PhD, Head of Medicine & Science at the IOC’s Scientific and Medical Department discusses the massive problem that is ACL injuries in children under 12 years of age. Kids’ ACL ruptures are becoming more prevalent, the condition seems to affect boys and girls equally, and the management is controversial. There is universal agreement that preserving the meniscus (which can include meniscal suture) is critical. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
"Nearly half of all black doctors practicing in the U.S. today are graduates of Meharry." Join The Gist of Freedom as we discuss the history of Meharry College with historian, genealogist Chris Mitchell a daughter of a Meharry graduate! Meharry Medical College, founded in 1876 in Nashville, Tennessee, is the 2nd oldest medical school for African Americans in the nation. The college was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Freedman's Aid Society in 1876 when Samuel Meharry, a Scots-Irish immigrant salt trader who had been helped by a former enslaved family, gave a $15,000 donation in their honor. The Church and the Society used the donation to establish a program to provide medical training for former slaves. Meharry had its first graduate in 1877 and the following year there were three graduates. In 1886 the Dental Department was founded followed in 1889 by the Pharmacy Department. In 1915 the Medical Department received a state charger and Meharry became an independent institution. Hubbard Hospital, named after George W. Hubbard, one of the first faculty members, was built in 1917. In 1952 Dr. Harold D. West became the school's first African American president. Under his leadership the campus expanded and another wing was added to Hubbard Hospital. Today Meharry Medical College consists of the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Graduate Studies and Research, the School of Allied Health Professions, the George Russell Towers of Hubbard Hospital, two health care centers, and the Harold D. West Basic Sciences Center.
