Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. On the fateful morning of November 21, 1980, one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history erupted at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The blaze claimed 85 lives, injured nearly 700 people, and forever altered fire safety protocols nationwide. This harrowing event, which unfolded in the glittering heart of Las Vegas, remains a chilling reminder of the devastating consequences of safety oversights. A Las Vegas Police Officer on scene tells the story. Check out and follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The fire began around 7:07 a.m. in a restaurant on the casino’s first floor. A refrigerated pastry display case in The Deli malfunctioned, sparking a blaze that quickly spread through the casino. Within minutes, thick black smoke engulfed the building, rising through elevator shafts and stairwells into the 26-story hotel tower. Of the approximately 5,000 guests and staff inside the MGM Grand that morning, many were trapped in their rooms, succumbing to smoke inhalation. You can listen to the interview as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. Mark Rusin, a former Las Vegas Metro Police officer and retired ATF agent, vividly recalls the chaos. “It was like hell on earth,” Rusin shared during the interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast. As one of the officers on the scene, Rusin and his squad were tasked with the grim duty of recovering bodies from the smoke-filled hotel. Look for supporting stories about this in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. Police and fire crews responded swiftly, with the Clark County Fire Department receiving the first call at 7:17 a.m. Despite their rapid deployment, the fire’s intensity and the building’s design flaws made rescue efforts perilous. Metro Police helicopters airlifted officers to the rooftop, where they descended into the hotel to locate victims. Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. It is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “The hallways were pitch black,” Rusin recounted. “We carried gurneys, flashlights, and axes, navigating through the eerie silence broken only by the sounds of distant alarms and our own footsteps.” His team found victims in stairwells and corridors, many having succumbed while desperately trying to escape. Among the 85 fatalities, most deaths were caused by smoke inhalation rather than direct burns. Survivors and responders described harrowing scenes: guests breaking windows to escape, others clinging to balconies awaiting rescue. One victim, described by Rusin, died shielding his wife from the smoke in a final act of love. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The trauma of that day left an indelible mark on first responders. For Rusin, it led to years of reflection and healing, culminating in his book, Metro: Sin City Chronicles, which details his experiences as a Las Vegas officer. Platforms like the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Apple Podcasts and Spotify make these stories more accessible. The MGM Grand fire stands as Nevada’s deadliest disaster and the third-deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, following the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta (1946) and the Dupont Plaza Hotel fire in Puerto Rico (1986). Its impact, however, extended far beyond the immediate tragedy. The incident exposed critical safety flaws, including the absence of sprinklers in the casino and the use of flammable materials in the building’s construction. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media outlets. In the aftermath, Nevada implemented sweeping reforms to fire safety codes. These included mandatory sprinkler systems in high-rise buildings, fire-resistant construction materials, and comprehensive evacuation plans. Nationwide, the tragedy became a case study for fire safety and disaster preparedness. Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. Decades later, the MGM Grand fire’s story continues to resonate, amplified by social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Survivors, first responders, and historians share their accounts, ensuring the lessons learned are not forgotten. Today, the site of the MGM Grand is home to Horseshoe Las Vegas, a vibrant symbol of the city’s resilience. Yet, the memory of that devastating morning in 1980 endures, a somber reminder of the lives lost and the importance of vigilance in safety standards. For those who lived through it, like Mark Rusin, the fire remains a defining moment—a testament to the courage of first responders and the enduring need for preparedness in the face of catastrophe. On November 21, 1980, the Las Vegas Strip was the site of what would become the third-worst hotel fire in modern U.S. history and what to this day remains the biggest disaster in the history of the state of Nevada. Early that morning, a small fire broke out in a restaurant on the ground floor of what was - at the time - the MGM Grand Hotel. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the casino level and sending thick black smoke & toxic fumes to the upper floors of the hotel. In the end, 85 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. But what exactly caused the fire and led to such widespread fatalities & injuries? And what changes were made to ensure that something like this could ever happen again? As we mark 42 years since this horrific event, these are the questions we aim to answer with this specially re-mastered edition of Sin City Stories: Inferno At The MGM Grand. If you want to learn more about the history of the original MGM Grand Hotel, the fire that claimed the lives of 85 innocent victims, or any of the other incidents covered in this episode, check out the shownotes for Volume 2 of Sin City Stories featuring photos, videos, articles and more! __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! David Copperfield is a magician and entertainer, best known for his combination of storytelling and illusion, and described by Forbes as the most commercially successful magician in history. His illusions have included the disappearance of a Learjet, the vanishing and reappearance of the Statue of Liberty, levitating over the Grand Canyon, walking through the Great Wall of China, escaping from Alcatraz prison, and flying on stage. He has received 21 Emmy Awards, 11 Guinness World Records, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a knighthood by the French government, and the Living Legend award by the US Library of Congress. You can watch him live performing 7 days a week at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Some interesting insights from this episode: While he's passionate about magic and one of the greatest magicians ever, at heart he is a storyteller. He is a multidimensional entertainer. His role models growing up weren't other magicians but actors and dancers like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. And storytellers like Walt Disney. He likes to make audiences feel something in the heart, not just a challenge in the brain. To this day he is inspired by a quote he read as a kid: “You're only as good as you dare to be bad.” You can't do something unique and special without taking some risks along the way. The formula for his success is summarized with his mantra: “Passion, preparation, and persistence.” He still has imposture syndrome at times which pushes him to continue to keep trying to perfect his craft. “Excellence is about nothing ever being finished. It's a process that never ends.”

LAS VEGAS, NV: THE GREAT AMERICA OF 1946-1980 The usual consensus is that the “golden age” of Las Vegas occurred between 1946 and 1980, as the desert city became known as the “entertainment capital of the world” and assumed a unique place in the popular imagination. Though the bright lights gave the city a surreal aspect that seemed removed from the prosaic day-to-day concerns of mainstream America, Las Vegas would confront issues similar to those that faced the country as a whole. Las Vegas' reputation as a haven for vice go back to its earliest days as an incorporated municipality, the term “sin city” dating back to 1906. Nearby federal projects in the form of the construction camp at Boulder Dam (1931-1936) and the Las Vegas Army Airfield (1925, later Nellis Air Force Base), each with an almost entirely male workforce, were a ready market for gambling (legalized in 1931), liquor (illegal during prohibition) and prostitution, all of which were readily available in the city. Efforts by officials to crack down on or otherwise control vice merely provided an opportunity for organized crime, which arrived in the form of gangs from the East Coast. There was a nugget of truth to the popular notion that the mob ran Las Vegas. Local government was weak and decentralized, something which left space for organized crime to exert influence. This led to a free-wheeling, almost libertine vibe. For most Americans, the city quickly came to represent a special sort of freedom, a place that seemed built just for a certain notion of leisure that allowed for an escape from the responsibilities and expectations of working life in the United States. By the same token, investors similarly saw opportunity in a place where they could build a business without some of the constraints seen elsewhere, and created a gaudy and ostentatious cityscape. Beyond gambling (soon rebranded as more respectable “gaming”), entertainment options were generally affordable and accessible, with middle-class people able to see performers like Liberace and Frank Sinatra in the relative intimacy of a lounge. Significantly, these performers were often people past their heyday, and Las Vegas provided an opportunity for them to find new relevance in an era when rock-and-roll was ascendant in the rest of the country. The lounges helped preserve a swaggering, cigarette-smoking notion of cool made obsolete by the social upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Segregation was an issue as well, though the city's unique political dynamics made the struggle play out differently than it did in other places. The mob, largely Jewish and Italian, were at best ambivalent about segregation, and saw it as bad for business. They defied the hidebound elected city leadership, who continued to champion southern-style segregation through the 1950s and 60s. Additionally, entertainers like Frank Sinatra refused to perform at segregated clubs, further pressuring the city to integrate. Segregation was brought down by a series of dramatic protest actions starting through the 1960s and 70s by a coalition that included the NAACP and an increasingly powerful (and integrated) Culinary Workers Union. In 1980, a fire at the MGM Grand Hotel killed 87 people and injured nearly 700 more. A subsequent inquiry found that the death toll was due in large part to a lack of sprinklers, something that was allowed by city officials. The resulting outrage led to reforms as it became clear that the city's permissiveness could not continue. By this time, most of the old organized crime figures who once held sway in Las Vegas were no longer in the picture, and federal law enforcement had broken the power of the mobs nationally. Increasingly, the resort industry in Las Vegas would become a well-marketed corporate venture. -Tom Prezelski, Resident Historian

On today's episode, Cynthia Inguanzo, the assistant executive pastry chef at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino joins me.We got to know each other in 2019 and I selected her to create the pastry course for the Vegas Vegan Dinner I curated that fall at the world-renowned James Beard House. Before we worked together, she hadn't made vegan pastries.Things have certainly changed since then! Now, she is dipping her toes more into vegan baking and I'm so happy to have her on this episode. Before we begin, let me tell you a little about her.She was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela and earned her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Thankfully, she chose a different path and decided to become a chef. She moved to New York City to continue her education at the International Culinary Centre in 2005 and earned a Grand Diploma in Pastry Arts. She originally planned to return home, but ended up with an offer in 2006 to relocate to Las Vegas as a pastry helper at L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, a Michelin-starred restaurant by the world- renowned “Chef of the Century.”She's held several pastry chef positions within resort restaurants and in 2011, she became the assistant pastry chef of banquets for the destination. Five years later, she was promoted to her current role as assistant executive pastry chef at MGM Grand.Check out more episodes of The Good Fork: www.vegansbaby.com/the-good-forkFollow Vegans, Baby on Facebook – www.facebook.com/vegansbabyFollow Vegans, Baby on Instagram – www.instagram.com/vegansbabyFollow Vegans, Baby on Pinterest – www.pinterest.com/vegansbabyFollow Vegans, Baby on Twitter – www.twitter.com/vegansbabyFollow host Diana Edelman on Instagram – www.instagram.com/diana_edelmanTo discover vegan dining around the world, head to Vegans, Baby – www.vegansbaby.comDownload or order The Las Vegas Vegan Dining Guide today and start eating at the best restaurants in town for vegan food! bit.ly/2020lvveganguideSupport the show (http://paypal.me/dianaedelman)Support the show
Almost 40 years ago, the Las Vegas Strip was the site of what would become the third-worst hotel fire in modern US history and what remains as the worst disaster in the history of the state of Nevada. On an early morning in November of 1980, a small fire broke out in what was - at the time - the MGM Grand Hotel (now, Bally's). The fire quickly spread, engulfing the casino level and sending thick black smoke & toxic fumes to the upper floors of the hotel. In the end, 85 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. But what exactly caused the fire and led to such widespread fatalities & injuries? And what changes were made to ensure that something like this could never happen again? That's what this episode of Sin City Stories is all about, as I take a deep dive into one of the darker moments in Las Vegas's history. And if you want to learn more about everything I've covered in this special episode of the podcast, head over to the official Sin City Stories website - featuring in-depth stories, links, videos, photos and more!

At the time, MGM Grand (now Bally's) was the largest hotel casino in the world. However in that incarnation, MGM is better known as the location of the deadliest fire in strip history. In 1999, it opened, once again at the time, the largest hotel casino in the world with the least appealing entrance to Asian gamblers ever created. It was a giant lion that you walked under. These are just a couple examples that make the MGM Grand a complex property to eloquently summarize. When it opened, the emerald green building and the experience within was meant to pay tribute to the studios all time great movie the wizard of oz. Complete with a yellow brick road that lead to an amusement park studio attraction meant to celebrate all of the studios history. Less than 10 years into the properties existence, both are a different kind of history. MGM Grand challenges the notion that bigger is always better. The largest hotel in the city frequently has guests complaining they need a cab just to get to their room. The casino floor has been described by many as too big and by others as epic. It has a reputation for being home to some of the best and worst dining experiences. Despite all that, perhaps the fact that they refuse to stop trying is the most telling aspect of MGM Grand. Ideas that haven't worked have been replaced with better ones. Sections of the casino have been configured to feel smaller and more intimate and that failed amusement park was turned into condos that were so successful it can be credited with being one of the pioneers of that movement in Las Vegas. Ultimately MGM Grand needs to be experienced...with caution.
Kevin Meaney is one of my favorites because I will never forget watching him on television with my Dad and he made us both laugh out loud together. From then on my Dad would quote one of Kevin's jokes to me when he thought I might be on drugs "What are you hopped up on goofballs?" To see Kevin Meaney perform today is to see him funnier than he has ever been. If Depression, jail time and being stung by hornets can make you funnier in the retelling of those hard luck occurrences than Kevin is at the height of his powers and this episode is going to leave your sides hurting with laughter. This year has been a tough year on Kevin Meaney especially with the shittiest moment being sent to jail for a misunderstanding at JFK airport when he was on his way to Israel to do shows. As much as I love him and feel terrible for what happened to him I can't help but howl with laughter and that is the gift of a great comedian. "You can't cry in jail, you have to be tough. You can't show fear in county jail." He thought using the toilet in the open shared jail cell was his lowest moment until a school class trip came through to scare the kids by showing them how they shouldn't end up in life. This episode was recorded at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. I flew in a day early before I was to do a week performing at Brad Garrett's in Las Vegas. Kevin Meaney was closing out his week and I went to see his show that night. Geechy Guy and Shayma Tash watched the show with me and after Kevin's show we all went back to my room to record this conversation. He is a man that I love very much as a human being. I wish that he would make a musical out of his jail experience. We talk about how depression is a serious medical condition and how the death of Robin Williams made him be more determined to be who he is. At all times through the toughest retelling of his pain he is lovable and hilarious and it is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Kevin Meaney! Intro song: Cutting Room (Hot Pants) – Oceanliners Stand-up clip from YouTube 1: Kevin Meaney: Gay stuff; Mall shitters Stand-up clip from YouTube 2: Kevin Meaney - "Why do you do this to your father and I?" End song: Everybody – Tommy Roe Recorded in Las Vegas, September 2014
