However, right after Mom explained how to find middle C, her brother Tanner excitedly barged into the house. "Mom, guess what! We picked out jobs at chess club today. Everyone wanted to be the president. We didn't want to argue, so we're all going to be the president! We're going to call it the Presidents' Club. Isn't that great?" As he talked, Elodie continued to practice and sing out, "Middle C, middle C, middle C." Tanner laughed. "She sure likes finding middle C." Mom nodded and led him to the kitchen. As she handed him a bowl of carrots and dip, she said, "Tell me more about this Presidents' Club. Who's going to collect money at the club events? Or take notes at meetings?" "I'm not really sure," said Tanner. "I guess we didn't think about that." Suddenly, Elodie's voice loudly interrupted them. "Middle C, middle C, middle C." This time, Tanner rolled his eyes. "Can't she play another note? This is getting annoying." "You're right, Tanner," said Mom. "Many notes are needed to make a song. People are that way too. Just like how the notes in a song blend together to make music, God created each of us with different interests and abilities for a reason."Mom glanced toward the other room when middle C rang out once again. "Think about your club, Tanner. God gave everyone in your group different abilities, and your club should put them all to good use so it can function the way it's supposed to. The church is like that too. As Christians work together and use our different gifts to help more people know Jesus, we're like a song that brings Him praise and tells the world of His love."Tanner thought about it as he bit into a carrot. "You know, I do enjoy math. Maybe I could help out as club treasurer! I'd rather do that than talk in front of the whole group anyway.""Middle C, middle C, middle C," Elodie continued to sing. Tanner covered his ears, and Mom laughed. "That sounds like a great idea. Paolo Laraño grew up in The Bay Area before moving East to attend New York University, where he studied English and Music. He served as an RA at Hayden Hall from 2008-2010. He was also heavily involved in leading retreats and groups through NYU’s Catholic Center and was involved in Middle C, a music-focused community service group. After graduating in 2010, he eventually found his way to the mental health field, all while fulfilling a childhood dream of making ice cream professionally. He sadly had to say goodbye to this dream job when he moved back to California to pursue a graduate degree at The Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, eventually earning a doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2018. He has cherished the opportunity to provide clinical services to students at every level, political refugees, adults of all ages, families, individuals in the criminal justice system, and more. His dissertation, entitled “Exploring The Onset and Progression of Body Dissatisfaction in Male Athletes From Adolescence to Young Adulthood” highlights some of his clinical interests, which also include multicultural issues, acculturation difficulties, decolonization work, family issues, social anxiety, and motivation. He currently works as a Staff Psychologist and Outreach Coordinator at The University of Washington Tacoma. When he’s not working, you can catch him running, eating/cooking, dancing while washing dishes, and spending time with his wife, Courtney (a fellow Hayden RA!), their son, Cai, and their dog, Winnie.

It's been a while... specifically, 25 years... since Uptown Charlotte had one of these. Do you know what it is? You'll be surprised when I tell you.... it's a jazz club. Yes, it's been THAT long since there was one dedicated place you could listen to live jazz in uptown. A long time, right? Well we're happy to report that there is now live jazz in uptown at the corner of MLK and Brevard streets, across from the Convention Center. You can find concerts 3 nights a week, and great, comfortable surroundings. And who would be brave enough to bring jazz back to Charlotte? A family with deep roots in local entertainment - including jazz. Adam Farber with Middle C Jazz is here to fill us in.  

Vocal range is the range of pitches that a human voice can phonate. Its most common application is within the context of singing, where it is used as a defining characteristic for classifying singing voices into voice types.[1] It is also a topic of study within linguistics, phonetics, and speech-language pathology, particularly in relation to the study of tonal languages and certain types of vocal disorders, although it has little practical application in terms of speech. Within the operatic systems of classification, there are six basic voice types. The ranges given below are approximations and are not meant to be too rigidly applied.[5] Soprano: the highest female voice, being able to sing C4 (middle C) to C6 (high C), and possibly higher. Mezzo-soprano: a female voice between A3 (A below middle C) and A5 (2nd A above middle C). Contralto: the lowest female voice, F3 (F below middle C) to E5 (2nd E above Middle C). Rare contraltos possess a range similar to the tenor. Tenor: the highest male voice, B2 (2nd B below middle C) to A4 (A above Middle C), and possibly higher. Baritone: a male voice, G2 (two Gs below middle C) to F4 (F above middle C). Considering the closure of local music venue staples such as Tremont Music Hall, the Double Door Inn, The Chop Shop among others, the mere act of opening a music venue in the heart of Uptown can almost be seen as an act of defiance. A bold gesture in the face of trends, indeed, one that only proves to be even more courageous when the venue in question is dedicated to jazz. In today's episode of The Biscuit CLT Podcast, producer Andy Goh talks to Middle C co-owner Adam Farber. Adam founded Middle C with his father, Larry, after seeing the need for high-level live jazz. Adam talks about the space, and how it was inspired by great jazz clubs around the country, opening a live music venue at a time when so many are closing, what kind of music you can expect to hear at Middle C and much more.

A couple of questions for my organ only has 25 pedals, so what does one do when running in organ music that is above the range of that pedalboard which runs down to 2 octaves below middle C up to Middle C on the piano. Also, I have been working out of my hymnal breaking up my practicing on the hymns down from soprano, alto and tenor and the bass part separately. With the Marcel Dupré book, I am working on one piece at a time, and working consistently on one section at a time in piece until I get my coordination and phrasing right before I go to the next phrase to work on. Tara interviews speech and language pathologist Dr. Anita Kozan. She specializes in helping people with their singing and speaking voices when they run into vocal issues. She discusses how our voice works, some of the differences between male and female voices, what can happen to aging voices and how vocal therapy can help people even without surgery in many circumstances. Join me for this insightful discussion with someone who really cares about helping people with their voices and can bring hope!   (2:20) Dr. Kozan first had a friend talked to her about speech therapy—thinking that she would be good at it.   (4:20) She explains video stroboscopy—what it actually is. It has been in use since about 1985.   (7:55) Dr. Kozan would assess the voice through listening and watching a patient and using stroboscopy that could help her see the details of the vocal folds.   (10:15) She describes for us how small our vocal folds are and where they sit in our body. She also talks about the difference between male and female voices.   (11:20) Our vocal folds open and close 256 times per second at Middle C! Dr. Kozan describes our singing as an incredible athletic event.   (14:50) When a patient comes to Dr. Kozan with vocal issues, she goes through a vocal hygiene checklist with them.   (19:30) Dr. Kozan shares a story of someone who came for vocal therapy and already knew that he had to change certain ways of doing things.   (24:17) Spasmodic Dysphonia: there are 3 types When the folds stay together for too long, that is Adductor Dysphonia When the folds say open too long, that is Abductor Dysphonia Some people have both things happen at different times—the cords closing for too long or opening for too long   (26:04) Actress Katherine Hepburn had a vocal tremor. This can happen to people as they age.   (27:30) Dr. Kozan addresses aging in men and women and how it affects their voices.   (33:50) Jeannette LoVetri from Baldwin Wallace University helps teachers of singing with exercises that can really be beneficial for their students.   (36:35) When a patient has surgery on their voice, they are most often required to go on complete vocal rest for a time.   (38:05) In some therapy that Dr. Kozan does, she works with patients on adding breath on the onset  and releasing it in a way that helps their vocal production. Especially with the vocal fry, which tends to pinch our cords and needs a better release of breath.   (44:25) How do we know it's time to get our voices checked out?   (47:59) The Interval Training Model means we only do short amounts of practicing, then a time of resting the voice. (53:20) We need to cool down our voice after strenuous usage. This question was sent by Jonathan and he writes: “Reaching a third with left foot when above middle C. Here's an example. In the "10 Day Pedal Playing Challenge" in exercise No 3, the left foot needs to stretch for thirds a number of times in the area above middle C. I can barely reach middle C to the E above; this is with toe on middle C and heel on E above. Any higher combinations (and the exercise wants me to use my left foot as high as F above middle C reaching to A) is impossible for me. I've made sure I've been pivoting to the right. I've tried lowering and raising the bench. I've moved the bench closer and farther away. I've been working on ankle flexibility for the two years I've been studying organ. Perhaps some of us just aren't built that way. (My left leg is shorter than the right. And my upper legs are long and lower legs are short, compared to the average person's build.) Is it okay to reverse the parts of the left foot used - to begin with the heel and end with the toe, when ascending, if I can't do what the pedal notation asks for? Or should I try something else?”
