In the second hour, Bruce Levine and David Haugh were joined by Cubs first baseman Matt Mervis, who was the organization's Minor League Player of the Year in 2022. He discussed his breakout 2022 campaign and what he's expecting in the 2023 season. Later, Levine and Haugh listened to analyst Doug Glanville share a heartwarming message about Astros manager Dusty Baker, who recently won his first World Series.
We start off the last week of the regular season by setting up Wildcard Weekend, and looking to next year with Ohtani's record deal and yet another return of Miggy. There was so much news about hair that we created a whole segment – Gunnar Henderson is Minor League Player of the Year, Harold Ramirez's blue hair for autism awareness may inspire more postseason blue for the Rays, and cross-training with hockey introduces us to Buoy the Sea Troll, the new mascot of the Seattle Kraken, who sports long blue hair as a “nod to hockey flow.”The Cubs celebrate A League of Their Own in fine style, leading to a question about when is a baseball bat not a baseball bat – when it is a cane belonging to 95 year old Maybelle Blair and please let her take it on the plane. We love the weeks when Police Blotter can focus on multiple balks in one at bat. World Baseball Classic news focuses on Pakistan, Panama, and the seriously stirring and intimidating Haka done by the New Zealand team as a pregame ritual. Yadi will manage Puerto Rico, which involves more drama than one would guess, and the Puerto Rican women's league is taking a hurricane break in the season but the players are rolling up sleeves to help with disaster relief. The Hammers visit the White House in a surprisingly politics-free event, for better or worse. We say “Scorpions in your head,” “I'm done with my consonants,” and “I'll process everybody's sins if you get them to me before Thursday.”Get boosted, fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Ben and Carlos talk about Bobby Witt Jr. being named the BA Minor League Player of the Year and how there seem to be no obvious flaws in his game. After that, the two discuss the 2022 draft order being set (at least for the time being) and talk a little bit about how Baltimore's draft strategy in the past could line up with a 2022 draft class that looks strong on college bats, but lacks a clear 1-1 player at the moment. After that, the two talk about whether or not they like the current draft system and what changes might be better, and wonder if the new CBA will bring changes to the draft next year and in the future. Then the two talk about the upcoming Perfect Game WWBA World Championship—better known as Jupiter—which is one of the biggest amateur events of the year. Rich discusses the Minor League Player of the year and 14 other players in the final Hot Prospect of the Week podcast for the 2021 season
We revisit LA's spirited pre-majors Pacific Coast League rivalry (begun in Episode 208: The Hollywood Stars - With Dan Taylor) with a look at the team ultimately responsible for the demise of both - the Los Angeles Angels. Baseball author Gaylon White (“The Bilko Athletic Club: The Story of the 1956 Los Angeles Angels”) helps us set the table for the club's background story as the city's preeminent minor league baseball franchise - seen through the lens of its triumphant pennant-winning season of 1956, its penultimate before the National League's Dodgers took over town. Comprised of major league castoffs and unproven rookies, the Angels that season were centered around a bulky, beer-loving basher of home runs named Steve Bilko - a former St. Louis Cardinal whose headline-grabbing exploits at the plate led the PCL in eight different categories and the club to a dominating 107-61 record - 16 games ahead of their nearest challenger. In addition to earning national Minor League Player of the Year honors that season, Bilko also became an instant celebrity in Los Angeles - earning as much (if not more) than some of his better-known major league colleagues, as well as unwitting fame the eponymous lead character for of the Emmy Award-winning Phil Silvers Show. When the Angels and the Stars left town in 1958, so did Bilko - this time for a few more cups of coffee in the bigs, including, ironically, the first two seasons of the major (AL) league expansion version of the Angels in 1961-62 - the inaugural season of which was played in the same Wrigley Field that housed him and its predecessor.
We give Javy and Francisco thumbs up for their right to not like being booed, and reiterate our official stance that although fans have the right to boo, it is really bad form and should be avoided except in a few very specific instances. In our boyfriend report, Andrew Stevenson's mullet gets some press and ups his qHAR, Yoshi Tsutsugo finds comfort in Chipotles, and Iglesias is released to make room for Junk. Four teams and the League itself institute COVID vaccination requirements for non-player employees, and some long term staff would rather leave than get the shot. Recent outbreaks beg the question is a player's “personal choice” to not be vaccinated harmful to their team's chance in the playoffs? Oracle Park food concession workers vote to strike over lack of COVID protections, among other issues. In the Police Blotter, we are angrier and more deeply disappointed all the time at Jonah Keri, who just pled guilty to more than a dozen domestic assault charges. The Nats model good behavior by releasing Starlin Castro at the end of his suspension, and taking responsibility for bringing him on in the first place. The Mets acting GM, who replaced the GM they fired for sending inappropriate communications to female journalists, was just arrested for DUI. Pitcher Josiah Gray gives back by donating autographed cleats for a fundraising auction at Adopt a Minor League Player. Imagine being so good at your sport that you had to go shop around to find some competition. After 3 stellar years playing local competition, Brad Nelson had become such a threat that many opponents wouldn't even pitch to him. After a phenomenal sophomore campaign, Nelson was arguably the best baseball player in Iowa and was treated that way as a junior. It was clear that his baseball career was going to be taking him places. This week, Tim sits down with Garrigan Golden Bear and former Milwaukee Brewer, Brad Nelson. Baseball was Nelson's true love but he stood out just as much on the basketball court as he did in the batter's box. In four years on the hardwood, he averaged over 21 points and set all kinds of records for the Golden Bears. Both his successes on the diamond and his jump shot made him a terror in the North Central Conference. As a senior, Nelson made the difficult decision to forego his senior baseball season to play on a traveling AAU team and to compete in showcases to test the waters for his future. After a successful amateur career, Nelson was selected in the fourth round of the 2001 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. His success continued as he progressed through the Brewer's system over the next seven years. Nelson's minor league career included being a two-time all-star, two homerun derby titles, the 2002 Brewer's Minor League Player of the Year and the 2005 Pacific Coast League championship with the Nashville Sounds. Nelson got his shot at the majors at the end of 2008 as the Brewers were making a push for the post-season. His first hit in the majors came was a 2 out double in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Mets. After a strong 2009 spring training, Nelson made the Brewers 25-man opening day roster. However, some early struggles at the plate turned out to be the end of his time with the Brewers. After spending a few years with the Mariners, Cubs, Rangers, and two winters in Central American winter leagues, Nelson retired in 2014.

wikipedia:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Howard_(baseball)An All-American in basketball at Ohio State, Howard was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA. He instead signed with the Dodgers organization, and after a handful of appearances in 1958 and 1959 he succeeded Carl Furillo as Los Angeles' right fielder in 1960; he was named the Minor League Player of the Year in 1959 by The Sporting News after hitting 43 homers in the Pacific Coast League. He was named the NL's Rookie of the Year after batting .268 with 23 home runs and 77 RBI, and was nicknamed "Hondo" by teammates after a John Wayne film.[citation needed] He belted 98 homers in the following four seasons, most prominently in a 1962 campaign in which he batted .296 with 31 home runs and finished among the NL's top five players in RBI (119) and slugging (.560). He won the NL Player of the Month award in July with .381 average, 12 HR, and an incredible 41 RBI. As an outfielder starting 127 games (completing just 91), Howard was credited with 19 outfield assists (the league leader, Johnny Callison, starting 147 games had just five more). The season ended with the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants tied for first place, necessitating a three-game pennant playoff; Howard had only a single in 11 at-bats and struck out three times against Billy Pierce in the first game, including the final out; but he had a run and an RBI in the second contest, an 8–7 win. The Giants took the pennant in three games, but Howard would later finish ninth in the MVP voting.
